RUSTIC DEER Quilt design by Karen Cunagin, featuring fabrics from the Rustic Refined Collection

by Hoffman California Fabrics MATERIALS & CUTTING: * 2/3 yard woodgrain fabric for side borders. Cut (2) strips 3 ½ x 22 ½” LOF. Then cut (1) additional 2” x 16”

strip WOF, for one background strip.

* Using 11 fabrics of various solids and woodgrain fabrics — cut (14) 2” x 16” strips, for background. * one fat quarter for the head and a regular ¼ yard each for antlers and leaves

* backing fabric — 24” x 24” * binding fabric — 3/8 yard, we used Rustic Refined Style# N7534 Chestnut. SUPPLIES: * Template plastic sheet (optional) * Wonder Under fusible web * cotton batting — 24” x 24” * blending threads for quilting METHOD: 1. Pin and stitch together the 15 strips of fabric, for background, two at a time, then fours… Press all the seam allowances in the same direction. Clean cut the raw ends. 2. From the woodgrain fabric, for the sides. Begin at the ends and ease into the middle, pin and stitch them in place. Press the SAs toward the sides. 3. Either cut out the head, antlers and leaves from the pattern — or make plastic templates for these figures. Position them on their selected fabrics and rough cut the shapes about an inch bigger all around. Apply the fusible web to the back of the fabric chunks. On the fusible paper — trace the deer head with a faint line down the middle; turn the head over/reverse, and finish the figure. Trace one antler and one reverse image. Trace about 12 leaves from the three shapes — and reverse them to add variety. Cut out the figures. 4. Fuse the head and antlers in place. Machine stitch close to the cut edges. Arrange and fuse the leaves. Machine Stitch close to the cut edges. 5. Sandwich the top, batting and backing. Quilt the three layers with the walking foot and/or free-motion foot to add interest to this ‘rustic story.’ Bind or face the edges. Copyright Karen Cunagin 2015
