Russian science: overview

• 3,500 scientific institutes, 70% of them are state-owned.

• The majority of approx. 450,000 scientists in Russia are physicians, biologists and chemists. Whereas economists and representatives of social sciences are desperately missing.

• 14th place in the world in terms of the number of citation.

Main state programs• Russian Corporation of Nanotechnology (ROSNANO) – 100% state-owned corporation

established in the mid 2007.

• Mission: to develop nanotechnology in Russia by means of financing of investments projects.

• As of September 30, 2010 , ROSNANO approved 93 investment projects for further financing with the total budget of approx. 10 billion USD

10 billion USD.

Investment projects fall into 6 types:- Solar energy and energy saving;- Nano-structured inventory;- Medicine and biotechnology;- Engineering;- Optronics and nanoelectronics;- Infrastructure projects.

• Skolkovo – the center of innovation technology, so-called “the Russian Silicon Valley”.

• The construction of the center was started in December 2010 close to Moscow city.

• 100% financed by the Russian government.

• Mission: to provide favorable economic conditions for companies (foreign and domestic) which operate in the industries vital for the modernization of the Russian economy.

5 priority directions for modernization:- Power engineering;- IT;- Space and telecommunications;- Biomedical technologies;- Nuclear technologies.

• Non-profit research institute of the Russian Academy of Sciences.

• Among JSCC facilities there is MVS-100K supercomputer with peak performance of 140 Teraflops

• Active exchange of qualified specialists between Russia and Korea (particularly Samsung Electronics corporation).

• Joint integration of IT-solutions in many industries.

• Skolkovo as the one of the platforms for cooperation in innovative directions.

• Gas pipeline from Russia to Republic of Korea – subject of intensive negotiations during THE G20 SEOUL SUMMIT: 10 billion m3 per year in 2017
