How to reduce prescription medication costs
Ask for generics. If there are generic alternatives to brand name medications available, alw ays ask a physic ian for those medications instead of their more expensive brand name counterparts. Don’t just assume a physic ian w ill prescribe generics. Sometimes doc tors prescribe brand name medications despite the availability of cheaper and equally effective generic medications.
Travel benefits for those ages 50 and up
One of the best things about aging is being able to enjoy the fruits of your labor without as many obligations as you might have had when you were a younger adult. For example, many men and women have a lot more freedom to travel once they turn 50.
Many of today’s older adults have a wealth of discretionary time, and those who focused on retirement planning from an early age have the money to fund a recreational lifestyle. Travel companies and other businesses understand that Baby Boomers and other seniors are valuable customers and are rolling out the red carpet with a bevy of discounts and perks.
AARP Services, Inc. has long been a trusted resource in senior-based information and resources. The organization continues to broker relationships with various companies to arrange deals on travel-related services and products for older men and women. Members of AARP can link directly to deals through the organization’s website.
In addition to companies that work with AARP, many other travel companies have discounts or other perks available to men and women over 50. All consumers need to do is inquire about such benefits. When in doubt, log on to the company’s website or give their customer service department a call.
Here are some other ways to secure deals on travel and other services.
• Do some networking. Fellow seniors who log in to chat rooms or who are members of social clubs may have the inside scoop on age-based travel deals. Learn the ropes from others who have been there before you and take notes on which companies offer the best deals.
• Read the fine print. Understand the details of senior discounts and compare them to other promotions offered to anyone, regardless of age. You may be able to get a better deal or combine offers if you’re not locked into a senior plan. Also, check the dates when deals are valid to ensure you can travel when you want to.
• Always carry proof of age. Whether it is a driver’s license, AARP card, passport, or birth certificate, carry proof of your age at all times. You do not want to miss out on a discount because you cannot verify you are 50 or older. Though being mistaken as younger could be a boost to your ego, it will not benefit your bottom line.
• Explore airline perks. Men and women 55 and older may be eligible for “golden-agers” discounts at major airlines. Such deals are not typically advertised, so you may need to speak with an airline representative to secure the discount. Seniors also can request special services, such as baggage assistance, priority seating and a ride to the gate, at the airport.
• Try negotiating with vendors. If you cannot find a senior discount, consider negotiating with vendors for deals. Local hotels or businesses may prove more flexible than national chains. It never hurts to ask for a senior discount.
• Embrace flexibility in scheduling. Unlike students or business travelers, seniors tend to have freedom with regard to the days of the week when they can travel. You have the flexibility to go and come as you please without having to coordinate with vacation time or school breaks. Use this to your advantage and travel during off-peak times when crowds will be small and rates may be lower.
Don’t feel down if you’re approaching another milestone birthday. Entering into your golden years gives you access to a variety of perks and discounts that can save you time and money on travel.

Everyday angels - you may live with one, or perhaps you’ve encountered one as you go about your daily life. They’re those special individuals who go out of their way to lend a helping hand; who show they care by their thoughtfulness; who are willing to take a stand for something they believe in; who are always ready to pitch in and get it done, without fanfare or recognition; or who sacrifice for others, whether caring for a loved one, or stopping to help a stranger.
Share your angel with Penny Saver readers. He or she just might inspire others to be an angel, too! Submit at gvpennysaver.com under My Hometown.

(CNNMoney) Just when it seemed mortgage rates weren’t going to get any lower, they started testing new lows. In the tumultuous days following Standard & Poor’s debt downgrades, rates on 30-year fixed mortgages fell to 4.32%, down from 4.39% last week and closed in on a record low of 4.17% set last November, according to Freddie Mac’s Primary Mortgage Market Survey.

Alzheimer’s is not an old person’s disease Brian Norton and his fifteen-
year old daughter Megan Norton have a very good reason to lead the Walk to End Alzheimer’s in Rochester on Saturday, September 26, 2015. The Nortons’ lives were turned upside down when Brian’s wife Amy was diagnosed with early-onset Alzheimer’s in her early 40s. Brian is now taking on the role of being a caregiver and father to two young teenagers, while his wife’s cognitive ability slips away more each day.
He wants to share with everyone that this is not an “old person’s” disease. By bringing more awareness to early-onset Alzheimer’s, Brian hopes we can take one step closer to finding a cure.
Brian said he has received a lot of support and information from the Alzheimer’s Association when the family moved from Atlanta to Rochester, mostly because they knew they would need family support during this difficult journey. We asked Brian why he is involved in the Walk to End Alzheimer’s, he said, “You can sit on the sidelines and be a victim of a disease or have a sense of purpose. We didn’t want it to happen…but it did. So, let’s make the best of it.”
Amy, with her son Justin and daughter Megan

Thank you FedEx man.
You’re our hero. Our
neighbor was walking her
small dog on a leash when
another neighbor, walking
his large dog on the same
street, were walking towards
each other. The large dog
broke free of his leash and
attacked the small dog. Our
neighbor started screaming
when she saw her dog being
shaken by this aggressive dog
and a FedEx man who was
driving by, stopped his truck
and with great risk to
himself, freed the small dog
from the mouth of the large
dog. The small dog was
seriously injured but this
man could have been really
hurt. What he did was
selfless and brave. We didn’t
even ask his name or thank
him properly but he was a
wonderful help in a very bad
situation. Thank you.
Thanks to Lee and
Kathryn Hankins of
Hankins Development
Corporation, for donating
the funds to the Rush Lions
Club and making the Rush
Hometown Heroes banners
possible! You help make
Rush a great place to bring
up a family, by supporting
community events and
organizations!
Our nation’s service
members often get thanked
for their service and sacrifice
yet all too often the farmer is
neglected for theirs. As was
pointed out in a recent
“Vent,” farmers work
tirelessly and endlessly to
not only provide food that
we enjoy, but also the
products that we use. Yes,
many commodity crops are
in products we use every
day. Everything from your
breakfast cereal and burgers
to your beer, and even your
drywall and batteries (look it
up), among many other
items, is made from
something that a farmer
provided. They are not only
the backbone of our nation
but the cornerstone of
civilization. Let’s not forget
the labor and the sacrifice
these men, women, and
families, make daily that
make our comforts possible.
To all the farmers, big and
small, specialty and
commodity, thanks!
To the heartless person
who stole my wallet from
a local pharmacy August
10. That was my son’s
money to return to
college!! How do you live
with yourself? You had a
chance to turn it in, but
chose to empty my wallet,
take my cash, even pennies
and receipts, then toss it
on a back road!! I hope
that money was worth the
karma you will face!!
Had to slam on my
brakes to avoid hitting a
cat. Glad nobody was
tailgating me. Why is
someone’s “pet” running
loose? Time to tattoo ALL
pets and hold OWNERS
responsible if their pets get
killed. Irresponsible
OWNERS should stop
blaming the drivers and be
held accountable!
Someone is always
complaining that
someone else ran over
their cat and didn’t leave a
note or knock on the door.
Stop it. I’ve never hit a cat,
but I know there are a
million strays out there.
And, your cat belongs
indoors. I live on a busy
road, and I’ve kept my cats
safe inside for more than 7
years. If I ran over a cat, I
would feel horrible, and I
would attempt to move it to
the side of the road, just in
case it had a family, but I
would also assume it’s one
of the thousands of strays in
our local counties. It’s sad,
but blame and wasting
everyone’s time is not the
solution to your problem.
Keep your other cats
indoors from now on.
To the man who feels it’s
necessary to keep track of
the number of cars who go
off the curve in front of his
house - don’t you think your
sign is a big distraction to
drivers negotiating the
curve? I love my Fire Dept.
too but I think they would
rather you show your
appreciation with a
donation instead of a big
obnoxious sign.

PREPARE NOW FOR
ELECTION DAY
Elec tions dec ide the leadership that guides legislation and enforcement of regulations. The right to vote is something many people take for granted, but elsew here in the w orld many people have no say w ith regard to their political leaders, w hich only emphasizes the importance of partic ipating in the elec tion process w henever you’re afforded the opportunity to do so.
The first step to prepare for Election Day is to confirm your eligibility. Age, legal residency and citizenship status are just a few of the factors that may affect your eligibility to vote. County c lerks, munic ipal offices as w ell as the Division of M otor Vehicles should have voter registration forms, and additional information is available online.
Voter registration may have to be filed several weeks to a month in advance of Election Day in order for you to be eligible. In the United States, when voter eligibility is in question at the time of an election, a person typically may cast a provisional vote, which w ill then be considered after other ballots are counted.
Once your eligibility has been verified, it is important to know the dates of key elections. Local newspapers often print schedules and this information can be found online as well. Various local and federal elections occur each year, and November is when national elections take place in the United States.
Before voting, voters should research the respec tive candidates for each elec tion. To better understand candidates’ platforms, visit their w ebsites as w ell as those of nonpartisan political organizations, such as The League of Women Voters. Dec iding w ho to vote for requires more than just siding w ith a particular political party. Read as muc h as you c an on the candidates’ beliefs, concerns and voter history. This w ill help you make the best dec ision possible.
In the days leading up to Election Day, confirm your polling location and voting options. USA.gov advises that if you need spec ial assistance, contac t your local elec tions office for information, advice, and educational materials about voting equipment and details on access to the polling place, inc luding designated parking.
Keep in mind that, in addition to voting for candidates, you may asked to answ er additional questions about issues impacting your local community. These are called ballot measures. A voter guide also may inc lude information about certain issues that w ill require your vote.

Before You Hit The Road: •Avoid the gas guzzler - If you’ve got two cars, take the one that gets better gas mileage even if it means a bit less leg room. If all you have is the aging SUV, consider renting a smaller car that gets better mileage. •Pack light - According to www.fueleconomy.gov, an extra 100 pounds in your trunk reduces a typical car’s fuel economy by 1 to 2 percent, while a loaded roof rack brings it down by 5 percent. •Check your tires - Keeping your tires inflated will make your car safer, reduce wear and tear and give your vehicle better gas mileage by up to 3 percent.

TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH By Keith Roach, M.D.
No Harm in Taking Nitro for Angina DEAR DR. ROACH: Could you write about the effect that angina, stopped quickly by nitro, has on one’s system? My husband takes Imdur (30 mg) twice a day to control angina, although he still experiences it several times a week, necessitating a nitroglycerin pill. Sometimes angina comes from exertion, such as climbing stairs a few times or doing home-maintenance chores. He is 89 and in relatively good health. He has had bypass surgery and several catheterizations, with eight stents. He doesn’t need a cane or use oxygen. His cardiologist suggested EECP, which my husband does not want to endure, believing the medicines are working fine.
His quality of life is good -- angina does not interfere with going out and enjoying himself. Is he taking angina too lightly because he can stop it by popping a nitro? -- M.W.
ANSWER: Angina pectoris literally means “chest pain,” but in my experience people with angina due to blockages in the arteries of the heart are more likely to complain of pressure or tightness than actual pain. Angina occurs when the heart’s demand for blood oxygen exceeds the supply. This usually means during exercise. If the blood supply is fixed due to a blockage in the heart, the heart simply can’t get enough oxygen above a certain level of exercise. If the person with angina stops exercising, the demand for oxygen goes back down below what can be supplied, and the angina goes away. Stable angina is associated with a low risk for heart attack. Medications like isosorbide (Imdur) and nitroglycerine work by dilating the blood vessels in order to increase supply. These medicines also dilate veins, which reduces the demands on the heart. Stents are designed to keep blockages open. Nonetheless, there are many people who continue to have angina despite what can be done with medicine and stents. EECP (enhanced external counterpulsation) is a new technique. Cuffs wrapped around the legs are synchronized with the EKG and squeeze strongly when the heart is at rest. This forces blood backward through the arteries and into the blood vessels of the heart. It may work by making some blood vessels larger, but the exact mechanism isn’t clear. EECP is used for people with stable angina. It takes 35 hours of EECP over four to seven weeks to get benefits, and about 70 percent of people had improvement from severe angina to mild or none. EECP is a big investment of time, and is usually reserved for people whose angina is more disabling than your husband’s. At 89, your husband certainly is entitled to say he is doing fine the way he is and not wanting further treatments. Coronary artery disease can go unnoticed until you have a heart attack. The booklet on the disease explains its causes, symptoms (such as angina) and treatment. Readers can order a copy by writing: Dr. Roach -- No. 101W, 628 Virginia Drive, Orlando, FL 32803. Enclose a check or money order (no cash) for $4.75 U.S./$6 Canada with the recipient’s printed name and address. Please allow four weeks for delivery.
*** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Readers may email questions to [email protected]. Answering Questions About Continuing Education
What is the right school? Those who have a full-time job can look into a school that offers evening or weekend classes. Many schools now offer online courses that allow individuals to take classes remotely. There is a growing interest in schools that specifically specialize in online degrees. Such schools enable students to take classes on their own time and complete assignments in a manner that’s less time-specific. Continuing students who may not have a spouse or children can move around to the school of choice. Once again, finances figure to play a major role when deciding on a school.

Answering Questions About Continuing Education
Is now the right time? Those going back to school because they think it might provide better job prospects or yield higher salaries could be mistaken. Many employers are cutting continuing-education grants and scaling back on hires with advanced degrees. That’s because companies are feeling the heat of the recession as well. Advanced degrees generally mean having to pay an employee a higher salary, something many companies are not in a position to do right now. Therefore, an advanced degree might prove a hindrance in today’s job market and not become the financial windfall some students expect. If this is the case, delaying an advanced degree for a few years may be a more financially sound idea.

Emphasize availability when making tech purchases. Nowadays, nearly everyone has an opinion on their favorite tech products and gadgets. However, for travelers, more than personal preference comes into play when making a purchase. Because business travelers are on the road so often, it helps to favor products that can be found across the country, whether you’re on a junket in Boise or attending a board meeting in Boston. With roughly 200 stores nationwide, Apple products are popular among business travelers who know it won’t be hard to find an Apple store nearby should they need assistance from a tech professional or any accessories they may have forgotten at home.

Eco- F riendly Ways To Alter Your Professional Life
Set your computer to pow er-saving mode at the end of the day. Researchers at the Law rence Berkeley National Laboratory found that the energy savings w hen a computer is in “ sleep” mode as opposed to being turned off completely are negligible. But professionals should set their computer so it goes into a pow er-saving mode after a certain period of being idle. In addition, get rid of screensavers, w hich require energy and no longer have any positive impact on the life expectancy of your computer monitor.
