The message read: I SAW JAMES HUNT WIN THE BRITISH GRAND PRIX. "We're going to tr y to ge t one onto Lauda's ca r the night before the race," the black-bearded head Super Fan promised grimly. "Varnish i t on so they can't get it off." That's th e tone of th e year, al l rigllt. Everybody ha s chosen up Purist enthusiast types ma y bemoan th e absurd ities coming ou t of Formula One this year, but they do have to admit that Ou r Sport ,\las achieved a height of noteriety that ha s brought us world attention at last. People wh o a year ag o couldn't have told you the difference between Grand Prix an d Grosse Point are no w ardent partisans for one ' side or the other : James Hunt and McLaren , or Niki Lauda and Ferrari. " Niki , g o ge t em, Babe , wantcha t ' know we ' re pullin ' for ya ." Th e backslapping f ellow wa s no t en t i rely sober but his f eelings were ferven t . Lauda turned to a pack of journalists at h i s heels. " Yo u hear that? Eh ? Y ou hear that? " And he grinned hi s famous toothy grin. Bu t as a bitter cold northern wind rippled the checkered flag on Sunday afternoon, it wa s James Hunt streaking underneath. He stuck both hi s red-gloved hands out into th e slipstream, making a V -sign with both hi s long arms, and let the decelerating Marlboro McLaren veer off line directly at hi s pit. The Kiwis behind th e baby-blue rail gave back exhuberance as good as they got . They stuck out signalling boards and caps an d arms and legs and great happy faces an d generally let James know how they felt about him. After that practice, a grim Latida accompanied his mechanics around th e cooling car, watching them measure it up with string an d bars and scales. "It's no t symetrical. It handles d i f f e ~ e n t in right COrners form left corners," he bit th e words off. "The cambers are wrong, or th e springs, or something .. " In the end the mechanics discovered a bent wheel, but any good it di d to find it was washed completely away by Satur day's rains.
