What is the program about?

Rural Sustainability will give students the opportunity to learn about the how the

wine industry functions within Central Italy

Students will tour the communities and working wineries, markets and farms with proprietors, managers and agriculturalists to learn about the variety of cultural and economic connections between the local communities and the agricultural and wine industries that sustain them.  Students will also have an opportunity to visit several agriculture and wine museums and libraries including Centro Nazionale Vini Passiti and the Lungarotti Foundation Wine Museum.

Coursework GEOG 491: Rural Sustainability:

tourism, food and wine in Central Italy. Considers aspects of the agricultural landscape, including the

various factors affecting food systems, wine and tourism production in the region hikes and tours, and interpretive mapping projects.

The course also explores the evolution of regional food and wine identities, signature icons, and the broader picture of food and wine production and consumption.

Students will explore sustainable agriculture and agritourism in self-defined, individual projects that will become part of an interpretive plan for the cultural landscapes of the region and their rural surroundings especially as they may be applied at home in British Columbia.
