Hello and a big welcome to the November and December edition of Runcorn Local – your free, independent community magazine!

Where has the year gone? It seems that if you blink for a moment, winter is here and the year is almost over. One minute you’re enjoying the last residues of summer and next thing you know is, you’re knee deep in Christmas shopping lists! Still there’s the comfort of drawing the curtains, lighting the fire (a log burner would be heavenly…) and snuggling up with a cuppa and your favourite book.

Some exciting news from Local Mags HQ - we’ve launched two fab new magazines for Warrington – Warrington South Local and Warrington West Local. So in total the Local Magazines now go directly to a fabulous 40,000 homes! So if you’re a local business and want to reach directly (we guarantee delivery) to potential customers throughout the area then give us a call for a no obligation chat – we don’t do any heavy sell, we don’t need to (and we’re not very good at it).

Some other news, the design bods at Local Mags HQ have a bit of a rejig with the magazine

this month and we now have ‘sections’ for our adverts and editorial features, such as Motoring, Gardens, Food & Drink etc. We think you fabby readers will find it much easier to find just what you’re looking for. Of course, you can still use the index too. As ever we’d appreciate your feedback on our changes, we do listen to what you want.

In this edition you’ll find a great book review produced just for us by Curiosity Book Shop on page 12. And for the green fingered among you Pippa Greenwood advises us about heavenly hedges. I’m not much of a gardener myself so I pick up loads from this regular feature - see it on page 40.

What do you think of our fab front cover this month? If you’re a budding photographer, why not send us a local photo, and maybe we could use it in a future issue?

I just want to take this opportunity to wish you (maybe a bit early) a very Happy Christmas and a very Healthy and Properous New Year.

Heavenly HairWe all know that great hair is the best accessory you can ever have, so that’s why it’s so important to keep it in tip-top condition and looking fabulous. For most of us, this is easier said than done.

With so many things ‘out to get’ our hair, just keeping it frizz-free and vaguely manageable from day to day is an effort. The prospect of attaining any sort of smooth silky condition seems unlikely.

But there is hope. This winter signals the perfect time to initiate a dedicated and committed hair-care routine. Investing time, patience and energy in your locks means that you can be rewarded with glossy lengths of Rapunzel-esque proportions.

The main problem we all face, especially at this time of year, is the damage caused by the elements. Harsh weather conditions outside and centrally heated rooms inside sap moisture from the hair, leaving it dry, split and unsightly.

HOLD THE HEATBut what makes it far worse is the damage caused by trying to achieve a smooth finish when we reach for the straighteners and turn up the heat. It’s a quick fix for now but in the long run it’s a problem.

Regular use of styling tools weakens the hair, causing it to split

and break. Applying a good quality heat protecting mist onto your lengths does help to limit damage, but the bottom line is that any intense heat isn’t a good thing. So cut back where you can.

Blow-drying is undeniably essential for adding lift, volume and shape to your tresses, but unfortunately can prove to be as damaging as any other heated tool. It’s essential to dry on a cool heat setting and always allow hair to ‘towel-dry’ for as long as possible beforehand.

WET IS WEAKBe extra careful with wet hair, as it’s at its weakest. Using a good quality hairbrush will ensure easy styling – particularly natural bristle brushes, as these will be extra gentle and encourage shine.

YOU GET WHAT YOU PAY FORInvesting in quality products from your hairdresser may be expensive but will certainly have a lasting impact. It’s always best to seek professional advice on establishing a tailored product plan for your hair.

Although most come with a hefty price tag, protein-rich shampoos and conditioners are excellent at re-building the structure of your hair and creating strength and shine.

It’s easy to become cynical about products and it’s certainly true that a lot of money can be wasted on them, but find the one that’s right for you and you’ll never go back.

What’s more, better products need only be used sparingly as they are packed full of rich ingredients, so they last a long time and can offer better value.

HEALTH FOR YOUR HAIRGood health is essential for good hair. We all feel run-down at this time of year and with the annual bouts of colds and flu ready to strike, hair can become dull, lifeless and lacking in the nutrients required to look its absolute silky and shiny best.

Stocking up on vitamins, fresh fruit and vegetables, not to mention protein rich foods, lots of omega 3 and sources of iron, all go a long way to nourish the hair from the inside out. It takes around three months to see the effect of a healthy diet on your hair, but the results are fantastic and well worth the wait, so be patient.

A healthy head of hair is the starting point that everyone needs to make the most of their colour, cut or style. So transform yours now and never worry about a bad hair day again.

This month’s selction of great

books...The Curiosity Bookshop in Runcorn have kindly supplied us with a list of five great reads for this month...

Runcorn Memories CalendarWe have again managed to produce a Runcorn Memories Calendar, price 3.99, for those who like a bit of nostalgia with their appointments. January kicks off with a couple of Yates Coaches, c1950, the luxury travel of its day. There are two pictures of the buildings at the bottom of Highlands Road, taken one hundred years apart, with Mrs Johnson standing outside her little cottage, and her home after conversion to a Post Office. Are you in the crowd watching the Rose Queen, or walking in the Town Hall grounds in 1954? December reproduces a 1944 Christmas Greetings Card from the Chairman of the Town Council which was sent to local servicemen fighting in the Second World War. The six verse message begins: To those of you from our town who fight to make us free, we send out hearty greetings, wherever you may be… Chairman Thomas J Lloyd and Mrs Lloyd obviously cared.

One for SorrowA lovely dip-into book for those not inclined to read one cover to cover, and one that will give the reader enough inside knowledge on the origins of common sayings to make them appear very well-read. From too many cooks to little acorns and from jack of all trades to a pig in a poke there are explanations and dates to amaze. For example, did you know that the saying “Still waters run deep” is first quoted in a biography of Alexander the Great written between AD41 and AD54 by the Roman historian Quintus Curtius Rufus, arriving in Britain in around 1300 in the poem Cursor Mundi to become part of our much-loved traditional folklore. Priced at £9.99, it as again part of the “20% Off” Christmas promotion.

The Jolly Christmas PostmanIt’s Christmas Eve and the Jolly Postman is delivering the season’s greetings to some very famous names. There’s a get-well jigsaw for Humpty Dumpty and a very appropriate game called “Beware” for Little Red Riding Hood from Mr Wolf. This delightful bookaalso reveals miniature envelopes containing letters and cards to some familiar fairytale friends. A whole new generation of little people with love it just as much as those who received the original twenty years ago. Priced at £12.99, the book is reduced by 20% as part of our Christmas promotion. This includes a visit from Father Christmas on December 10th who will give children chocolate and adults wine and Christmas cake.

Buildings of Cheshire The long awaited new edition of The Buildings of Cheshire by Pevsner is now available for those who like meticulous detail. In Runcorn it records the Carnegie Library in Egerton Street as an attractive Free Style Elizabethan in red sandstone with nice Art Nouveau glass and other details, by J Wilding, the Scala Cinema – 1912 – by Clegg & Lloyd, Bank House, now a bar, built for John Johnson, soap and alkali manufacturer and Waterloo House, built in 1830 for Charles Hazlehurst, another soap and alkali manufacturer. Sadly, despite all the research, time marches on and of Bridgewater House, described as an imposing six-by-five-bay block built in 1770 for the Duke of Bridgewater, is described as “part of Halton College”. Thankfully Bridgewater House is still there but the College, with its former building still shiny-new has recently been moved to Widnes which is described in the Liverpool and South Lancashire Pevsner. Both are priced at £35.

Spirits in the VaultsThe latest spine-chilling offering from Tom Slemen is a pub crawl with a difference. Hauntings abound in Liverpool’s pubs and it as well to be aware before you venture out. There are tales from the Beehive in Liverpool 1 to make your blood run cold, while stories from the Coffee House in Wavertree and the Swan Inn in Wood Street bring a shiver to the most sceptical of spines. The Old Post office in School Lane has also had more than its fair share of supernatural goings-on from Victorian times to the present day beginning with Tom’s tale of Secrets from the Other Side! Priced at £6.99 it makes certain a pint at your local will never be the same again.

Renault KoleosYou only have to look over the fence to sister firm Nissan to see that

crossovers can be successful – try and order a Qashqai or Juke now and you’ll be looking at a rather long wait. So it’s hard to pinpoint exactly why the Renault Koleos flopped. Renault launched it in 2008 and by 2010 it

had been axed, selling just 2,890. The Qashqai, by comparison, sold 9,253 models in March alone.

Ford CougarAlong with the Focus, the Cougar was one of the cars that demonstrated

Ford’s ‘new edge’ look in the late 90s. Available with the Mondeo’s 2.0-litre and 2.5-litre petrol engines, the Cougar was loved by the press. Sadly, the

public wasn’t convinced – the lack of a prestige badge meant sales totaled 13,958 in four years. In contrast, the BMW 3 Series Coupe sold 44,420

between ’98 and ’02, showing a badge makes all the difference.

Chrysler CrossfireLaunched with great fanfare in 2003, the Crossfire was Chrysler’s sports car for the masses. Based on the first-generation Mercedes SLK, it came in coupe and convertible forms with retro American styling. However, only

4,544 units were sold in five years, and the Crossfire quietly died in 2008. In contrast the SLK sold 4,362 units in 2004 alone.

Mercedes-Benz R-ClassBilled as a car that combined ‘an SUV, sports saloon, and luxury estate car’

into one package, the Mercedes R-Class arrived in 2005 hoping to carve a niche of its own. It was such a niche that few Brits bought it, and even a makeover in 2010 did little to improve the 3,433 sales clocked up so far.

Mercedes says those numbers are ‘in-line with expectations’, but we’re not so sure about that…

Subaru TribecaLike Renault, Subaru believed it needed an SUV in its range. So, in 2006,

along came the Tribeca. Intended to offer a ‘practical SUV with great handling and a sporty drive’ it failed to find buyers. A face-lift in 2008 did nothing to improve sales and it bowed out that year with just 750 sold. In

contrast, the Volvo XC90 – a car Subaru was competing with – sold 11,897 units in the same three years.

When Cheryl Harris took over Top Turnout in April 2007 she had no idea that her “ideal hobby job” would grow and expand into the company it has become in only four years.

The company provides an Equestrian Laundry Service to horse and has seen a rapid expansion from its humble beginnings in a converted stable unit.

Cheryl has built up the business through hard work and attention to detail and is now proud to be able to move into bigger and better premises at Lady Heyes Craft Centre, from where she will be able to continue to provide horse rug laundry and repair services.

Top Turnout’s little silver van has become a familiar sight as it travels each day around the local roads, providing a FREE collection and delivery service.

All items are washed and re-proofed in modern computer controlled laundry machines using industry standard cleaning and proofing products following manufacturers’ recommendations and are air dried before being repaired, if necessary, to a very high standard using sophisticated modern sewing machines. Cheryl prides herself on her ability to rise to the challenge of repairing trashed and unsightly rugs and will always do her best to get valuable rugs back in action as soon as possible.

Horse rugs and riding equipment represent a huge financial outlay for horse owners and regular investment in maintenance and repair not only extends the life of the equipment but also helps to maintain standards of hygiene for horse and rider alike.

Bespoke Legal ServicesIt’s not something we like to think about but one day may have to face the fact that we may need 24/7 care that our partner / immediate family will not be in a position to offer. Care Homes are the obvious answer but they are costly.

If you have more than £23000 in assets and this includes your home then the local authority will assess you as having the funds to meet the full cost of the care home!

It makes sense to plan for this possibility and speak to Bespoke Legal Services who have protected the Family home/Inheritance of over 300

people in the North West this year; in addition they have also protected their bank and building society accounts. In real terms this then means that should either you or your partner need to be admitted to a care home you are protecting your family home and funds so that your children can enjoy their rightful inheritance.

In 2008 over 70,000 people have needed to admit a partner to care homes and because they hadn’t planned ahead, as a result have had to sell the family home to pay for the long term care.

Don’t let this happen to you, see our main ad on page three

for further details and call us now for more information. Bespoke Legal ServicesCall us on: 0800 542 0881 or 01942 244776

Warm up for WinterThere’s no doubt that we’re all going to be thinking carefully about how we heat our homes this coming winter – and sensible measures such as good insulation, draught excluders and thermostats will help keep both costs and CO2 emissions down. But no matter how many extra jumpers we put on, there’s bound to come a time when we can’t do without some form of home heating. And since we’ve got to pay for it, we might as well make sure that it’s as efficient and attractive as possible.

First: the traditional fireplace. Many of us have one and it’s usually a focal point of a living room – despite the fact that open fires are shockingly poor heat producers, operating at around just 15-20% energy efficiency. If your fireplace as a whole is unappealing (whether or not you want to use the fire as a form of heating), you can usually update it relatively easily just by changing the surround, hearth and/

or mantelpiece: altering the colours, materials and proportions really does make a world of difference.

If you haven’t got a chimney, though, the good news is that you can still have a fire. Balanced flue gas fires require a gas supply and an outside wall on which to mount the fire, while powerflue (or fan flue) gas fires have the same requirements, and also need mains electricity. No outside wall? No problem. Electric fires can be used regardless of chimneys, flues and outside walls, and can look surprisingly attractive compared to the ghastly models of old. And some gas fires use a catalytic converter to turn combustion gases into harmless carbon dioxide, so no flue is required. Because no energy is lost through the flue, they are also 100% heat-efficient.

The big news in heating at the moment, however, is the wood-burning stove. In looks alone, they’re huge attention-grabbers:

traditional styles have timeless appeal, while hole-in-the-wall or centrepiece versions fit wonderfully into a modern setting. And by burning wood from sustainable, local sources you’re not increasing your carbon emissions (for more information, go to www.nef.org.uk/logpile).

Last, but not least, if you’ve got central heating, don’t forget your radiators. Are they giving off enough heat for the room? You can help prevent heat loss – especially on an outside wall – by fitting tin foil (or special radiator reflectors) behind them to reflect the heat back in. But if they’re simply not effective enough then consider replacing them with a more powerful version, perhaps in a dramatic modern style or in a classic column shape. They’re not cheap, but they are both practical and good-looking, and will last you many long winters yet to come.

When long nights and frosty mornings make it feel as if winter is never going to end, it’s time to cosy up with a blazing fire, warm radiators or a welcoming stove. Katherine Sorrell’s ideas for overhauling your heating will help you make it through till next summer…

Dress your home for winter with layers of cosiness...Throw down a deep pile rug to •add extra softness and a sense of warmth underfoot.

Swap sheer, pale, lightweight •curtains or blinds for something heavier – wool, tweed, velvet, even felt, denim or mohair.

On sofas and armchairs, pile •up cushions for a sense of cosy luxury and add a throw or two folded over the back: great for snuggling under. You could use a length of tweed edged with velvet ribbon, chunky knitting or crochet, fake fur or soft fleece.

Replace pale bed linen with •sheets or a duvet cover in a deeper shade. Add quilts, eiderdowns, bedcovers, throws and blankets.

Feature walls may no longer be •cutting edge, but they’re still good looking: paint one wall of a living room or bedroom in warm, boldly coloured emulsion – it’s easy enough to paint over again if you get bored with it.

Life With LizOur regular student columnist fills us in on what she’s been up to this month...

I’m so pleased to be writing another article! And, best of all, it’s the Christmas edition! I love the snow, the smell of mince pies rising up from the kitchen, and the family get-togethers on Christmas day. I love the dressing up, the big Christmas roast and the pulling of the crackers. But best of all, I love dancing to the cheesy Christmas tunes that have been around since the eighties. Doyley angels made with pegs and metallic pipe cleaner used to be my favourite craft in the December days, and after Christmas I usually turn all the cards I’ve received into neat little handmade boxes – a cheap and efficient way to recycle my cards.

However, after the Christmas dinner when all the adults are in a sleep-like stance, we kids struggle to find things to do. When your granddad’s snoring loudly in the armchair and the match is on TV, we amuse ourselves. The snow is the best! Making snowmen and making them look like the grumpy neighbour, or making

your pet’s familiar in the slushy stuff is just brilliant. I love walking ankle deep in the fresh snow, no other footprints in front of you. Last year, I made snow angels in the back garden. I couldn’t feel anything from the hairline downwards, but the angels were there for about three days afterwards: it was definitely worth it.

My friend’s mum used to make home-made crackers for her children. She’d put little gifts in them, a joke and a token of some sort that entitled the holder to win a treat of some sort. I thought it was a great way to save a bit of money and at the same time is crafty.

When I was younger we used to sit around the fire and my sisters would use various different nutcrackers to crack nuts from this large bowl my mum would set up, and we would sit there and watch Barbie nutcracker with the ballerina. I used to love that film! I was always watching something on the TV.

My family is always really

happy on Christmas Eve. The prospect of Santa coming down the chimney (although we don’t have one) is always one that we look forward to: I remember listening out for the hooves of his reindeer landing on the roof. Putting out the mince pie for Santa, the carrot for Rudolph and the milk is always ceremonial: I love it!

The one thing I love to wear as the weather gets colder is my woolly hat. It’s not just an ordinary woolly hat: it’s a panda woolly hat! I love wobbling my head side to side to feel the woolly bobble ears tap against my head. I bought it last Christmas out of the money I received, and I’ve even tried to wear it in the warmer months of the year. I love it so much!

So even though Christmas day is long, just remember that it’s not all about the material items that you receive: it’s the key time you get to spend with your family. I wish you all a very merry Christmas and a fabulous new year! :-)

10 years ago Paul Milner and Barry Thorley decided to combine their collective 40 years experience and set up NYK, based just off Halton Road in Runcorn.

As well as a superb display in the showroom, NYK Kitchens & Bedrooms has its own workshop and allows them to offer their clients a bespoke service catering for individual needs – everything is same on site allowing you to customise your order to suit your room.

Whether you opt for a brand new kitchen or bedroom, or choose to revamp your existing with replacement doors and worktops you can be assured of a quality job by time-served fitters.

The stunning kitchens are

available as supply only or fully fitted and are all custom made at the workshop, using top quality materials. One popular choice is for breath taking granite worktops – they really give kitchens the ‘wow factor’.

Bedroom furniture is another speciality that NYK offer –available either fitted or free standing with a wide range of finishes and colours to choose from, allowing you to match your bedroom to your tastes. Made-to-measure mirror doors are extremely popular and with a choice of mirror or panel doors in either frosted or coloured glass, give a traditional or modern slant. These can be fitted with or without an interior, again allowing the customer design options to suit their

needs and budgets. Interiors can be made allowing shelves and rails to be located at just the right height and position to suit.

Everyone is welcome to browse around the showroom which is open Monday to Saturday, 9am to 4pm, where you’ll find a selection of bedrooms and kitchens. What always strikes me when I visit the showroom is the mountainous range of thank you cards and letters from their many happy customers. This is a real testament of the teams’ attention to detail and great after sales service. You really can understand why most of Paul and Barry’s work comes through recommendation.

I’ve been advertising in the Widnes magazine for over a year now and have been really

Hedge your Boundary...Marking your garden boundary with a hedge rather than a wall or fence helps to provide more gardening opportunities plus the living boundary may also be a real boon for wildlife, so if you’re thinking garden boundaries, think hedging.

If you want a garden boundary that looks good and is green in all senses of the word, then you can’t go far wrong with a hedge. Hedges are generally grown from container-grown plants (bought at any time of year, with well-established root system and living in a pot) or from ‘bare root’ plants which are perfect bought at this time of year and planted straight away. Bare root hedging is not an option available for every type of plant. Some garden centres offer it, but generally for the freshest plants and widest selection you’re better going to a hedging specialist nursery. These

plants are often quite small, but great value and soon romp away, providing you with a low-cost good looking hedge.

WHAT TO CHOOSE?

Hornbeam: This deciduous tree makes great classic hedging and in the autumn leaves turn an attractive bright yellow. It’s long-lived and once established makes a good hedge for roosting birds. It’s easy to keep trimmed and dense, its only downside being few leaves remain in winter. Does well in sun or part shade.

Beech: A tough and hardy deciduous tree that makes a great hedge. Great kept neatly clipped for a formal look. Although it does shed its leaves, they turn a wonderful tan-brown towards the end of autumn and a high percentage remain on the plants until new leaves appear

Hedge your Boundary...Pippa Greenwoodby

in springtime. Native Hedging (including

hawthorn, wild rose, guilder rose, blackthorn): Perfect for a more rural look with lots of wildlife. Native hedging is often available as a mixed selection of suitable plants, all the above planted randomly along the hedge line make a great mixed deciduous hedge which will provide shelter, nesting sites and nectar from the attractive flowers and food from the various hips and berries.

Yew: Perfect for a more formal hedging. It’s evergreen and its narrow dark green leaves make a great backdrop for plants within the garden. Unlike most other evergreen hedging, if it’s allowed to grow out of hand, it does respond well to being cut back quite hard. Avoid damp sites and remember that although the end result looks great,

this is one of the slower growing hedging plants.

Prunus laurocerasus: Also known as the cherry laurel, it’s a large-leafed evergreen which forms a very good, dense hedge. It produces small, pretty white flowers, but if you clip the hedge regularly you rarely see many of them. The leaves are a light, glossy green, avoiding the sombre feeling some evergreen hedges can bring.

Thuja plicata: Known as the western red cedar, the variety ‘Atrovirens’ makes a particularly good evergreen hedge. It grows reasonably rapidly and is often used when one would like some aspects of a Leyland hedge but wouldn’t want its potential to get out of hand. The foliage produces a gorgeous pineapple aroma when crushed.

PLANTING BASICS Whichever of these fantastic

options takes your fancy, don’t forget the planting basics:

Plant container grown hedging •plants nearly any time of year, avoiding extreme weather.Plant bare-root hedging at any •time that it is available, mainly late autumn to late winter or very early spring.Prepare the ground by forking •in bulky organic matter such as garden compost, bagged compost or well-rotted manure. Most hedging is best planted with •each plant about 45cm (18in) apart along the row. For a denser hedge plant in 2 staggered rows, each row about 30-45cm apart.Don’t forget to keep the young •hedge properly pruned – if left to grow it alone, it’ll rarely become good and dense.
