Hall of Fame oversight

In the listing of new candidates for the ACBL Bridge Hall of Fame (class of 2013) published in the Thursday edition of the Daily Bulletin, biographical information on Judi Radin was inadvertently omitted.

Radin has won four world championships and 17 North American titles. She is one of North America’s top players.

The link between playing bridge and exercising the brain is well known within the bridge community. Now there is a way to share bridge’s healthy aging secret with the world – through a newly formed partnership between the ACBL and the Alzheimer’s Association.

The Longest Day is the Alzheimer’s Association’s newest signature event, and the ACBL is going to be the association’s premier partner. ENTERTAINMENT

Registration Desk For the final weekend of the Fall NABC, the

hours for the Registration Desk, located on the Bottom Level in the Yerba Buena Foyer, are as follows:

Saturday, Dec. 18:30 a.m. – 1 p.m.5 – 7:30 p.m.Sunday, Dec. 28 – 10 a.m.

In September next year, teams from around the world will travel to Bali, Indonesia, to play in the Bermuda Bowl, Venice Cup and D’Orsi Seniors Bowl. Those teams will have qualified in their home countries.

The Bali tournament is not limited to qualifiers, however. The World Transnational Open Teams is open to any players in good standing with their national bridge organizations. For North American players, that is the ACBL.

In World Bridge Federation transnational events, teams can be made up of players from any nations, and there are no quotas for participation.

The WTOT begins about midway through the World Team Championships, starting on Tuesday, Sept. 24, and continuing to the end of the tournament on Sunday, Sept. 29.

The WTOT starts with five 10-board matches per day for three days in Swiss format. The top eight finishers will be begin quarterfinal knockout play on Friday, Sept. 27. Semifinals are on Sept. 28 and the final and playoff for the bronze medal on Sept. 29.

At the end of the Swiss qualifying in the WTOT, non-qualifiers will be able to enter the Nusa Dua Ball Cup (pairs).

WBF President Gianarrigo Rona has been in San Francisco for meetings with ACBL officials, and

he encouraged players to consider making the trip to Bali, which he describes as “one of the best places in the world.”

Rona said he traveled to that part of Indonesia for the first time in 1995. “It was unforgettable,” he said. “The people are very friendly, and it is a great place for a holiday.”

Bali is one of Indonesia’s 33 provinces and is the country’s largest tourist destination, renowned for highly developed arts. Many visitors have declared it one of the most beautiful spots in the world.

Rona said the Indonesian Bridge Federation has been very supportive in the organization of the world championships to assure a quality event.

JUST FOR NEW PLAYERSRules to play by

by Brent Manley

How many passes can there be in succession on a deal? Based on the Laws of Duplicate Bridge, there can be a least seven. The following auction actually took place at a tournament in Hawaii.

West North East South1♦ Pass 1♠ 2♠Pass Pass 3♦ 3♠Pass Pass PassPass Pass Pass Pass

East’s pass on the third round of bidding was out of turn, and South had the option of accepting the pass out of turn. South took the option and passed, as did West. The laws, however, say that the player skipped in the bidding cannot be prevented from having his call, so the tournament director told North he could take a call. North passed, as did East and South – seven in a row!

That anecdote deals with the Laws of Duplicate Bridge. Today, we will deal with some “rules” that you won’t find in the law book. These come from the section on Rules and “Laws” of Bridge in the 7th edition of the Official Encyclopedia of Bridge.

RULE OF ONE. When you are declarer and there is only one trump out, if it is the master trump it is usually best to ignore it, especially if you have winners to run or need your own trumps for ruffing. Remember, getting that big trump “off the street” will often take two of your trumps. The exception occurs when you have a long, running suit that could be cut off by the player with the master trump. In that case, the holder of the master trump will wait to ruff in until you are exhausted of the running suit.

RULE OF TWO, THREE AND FOUR. Guides to preemptive opening bids. The number indicates how many tricks you can be set for a favorable

sacrifice against a game. Modern expert practice is:

Rule of Two (adverse vulnerability – you are, they are not).

Rule of Three (equal vulnerability – both vulnerable or non-vulnerable).

Rule of Four (favorable vulnerability – they are, you are not).

Most experts will bid more freely when an opponent has opened with a strong 2♣ or forcing 1♣, strong and artificial.

RULE OF EIGHT (Colchamiro). Proposed by Mel Colchamiro in a Bridge Bulletin article as a formula for deciding whether to compete against a strong 1NT opening.

Colchamiro advised that when considering whether to show a two-suited hand, a player should determine the number of losers in his hand, counting a loser for every missing ace, king and queen in a suit of three cards or more. A void is counted as no losers, a singleton as one and a doubleton two. A suit of three or more low cards is counted as three losers.

Once the number of losers has been determined, subtract that sum from the number of cards in the two longest suits. If the total is 2 or higher, the player should enter the auction. If the

total is 1 or zero, the player should pass.Using 2 as the minimum benchmark for

competing after the aforementioned calculation, the rule achieves the status of eight with the stipulation that the hand in question have at least 6 high-card points.

Tomorrow: More “laws” for your edification.

West North East South 1♠ Dbl 2NT Pass 4♠ All Pass

Opening lead: ♣A.Bidding commentary: As North, your jump to

2NT is a convention played throughout the world

called “Jordan.” It substitutes for a hand that would make a limit raise to 3♠ without the double. A jump to 3♠ over a double is preemptive, showing a weak hand with 2-5 HCP, at least four-card support plus a likely singleton or two doubletons. If you have a strong balanced hand that wants to bid a natural 2NT, redouble first and then bid notrump. As South, you have enough to bid game after the 2NT response. A return to 3♠ is a signoff. Jordan is a win-win convention because it allows for both a limit raise as well as a preemptive jump raise after a takeout double.

Lead commentary. When looking at the A-K in an unbid suit, one needs a good reason not to lead it!

Defensive commentary: As West, when East plays a low club at trick one, there is a huge danger that South will be able to lead up to the ♣Q and set up the entire suit for heart discards. If declarer has any diamond loser, those losers can be ruffed in dummy. Your best chance for four defensive tricks is to play partner for the ♥Q and shift to a low heart at trick two. It turns out to be good shift (of course it does, I made up the hand!). Assuming

dummy plays low, North steps up with the ♥Q and returns the ♥6, the higher of two remaining cards. Whichever heart South plays, you top it, driving out dummy’s ace. When declarer eventually leads a club, grab your king and cash the setting trick in hearts.

Play commentary: As South, if the opponents attack hearts, you have no time to set up clubs for heart discards. The opponents will take two clubs and two hearts. Your only chance is to take the diamond finesse even though it heads smack into the takeout doubler’s hand. If the finesse wins, you can shake dummy’s remaining heart on the ♦A and make your game. If it loses, you go down an extra 50 points. Big deal.

that no bridge tours had even been done there. So I decided to go to Cuba and explore the possibilities myself.

On that first visit, I made some informal contacts with people in the Ministry of Tourism and INDER (the Ministry of Sport), but every time I mentioned the word “bridge” it was as though I was speaking about the devil. To talk about card games in Cuba then was equivalent to talking about drugs, prostitution or homicide. But on my trip, I realized that this was the perfect place to put on a bridge tournament and bring enthusiasts from all over the world to a very beautiful, exotic island.

This was my immediate plan but . . . it was impossible. Each person to whom I spoke, each hotel director, told me it would be impossible. I was determined, however, and I searched until I found Manuel Lima, the Cuban director of a very famous hotel, who told me that he knew the game because he had traveled abroad and was actually very interested in the idea of foreign bridge tours coming to Cuba to play. And so, after a little bit of time, and after meeting the Cuban Ambassador and the Director for Latin America of the Ministry of Tourism at a party in Buenos Aires (to which Lima had invited me), things began to look up. They listened to me and I presented them with a complete dossier on bridge, its origin, etc., and even a letter from the then-President of the International Olympic Committee, Juan Antonio Samaranch, from 1999 when bridge was officially included in the Olympic family.

After much back and forth, I finally had authorization to hold the first “bridge holiday” with foreign players, and we had a beautiful bridge tournament with 92 players from Argentina. It was an

excellent experience and obviously carried out under the magnifying glass of the Cuban government.

And so it was that I decided to continue to introduce bridge and promote it to the fullest. It was a case of banging down doors, searching for recommendations from people I was meeting, and finally arriving after tremendous effort with the opportunity to present my case for bridge to the Cuban government. Ultimately, I was given authorization to begin to teach bridge and to hold an annual festival in Cuba.

Today there are about 50 players in Cuba, all between 20 and 35 years of age. On more than one occasion, we have had the honor of the presence of Jose Damiani and Gianarrigo Rona (the former and current WBF presidents) as well as several members of the directorate of the WBF at the annual festival.

My dear friend, Enma Castro (sister of the

president) has played in the festivals as my partner and has received several special invitations from the WBF and EBL to play in tournaments such as the world championships in Verona, the European championships in San Remo, and the world championships in Philadelphia in 2010

In 2011, Cuba was designated host for the 26th CACBF Zonal Championships, where we had a record number of players participating. The program was excellent. The next Cuba Bridge Festival will be in November 2013, and all the details will soon be available on the website www.festivalbridgecuba.com

Thanks to the success of the CAC 2011 in Cuba, the Panama Bridge Association decided to contract me to organize the 27th CACBF and International Open Festival in May 2013. This promises to be the most enjoyable CACBF Festival ever, with players from all over the world.

Cuba Bridge Big launchedBridge players may regret that poker has ended

up as today’s media darling with a reputation as the game for adrenaline-junkie card players. But in the last few weeks, more than 2000 bridge players from Norway to India have been playing online duplicate “cash games” for poker-style stakes, including a table where winnings or losses can top €100 ($130) on each board.

Rubber bridge, a form of contract bridge often played for money, long dominated card tables around the world. Although low-stakes money tournaments and friendly penny games can still be found in a few clubs and on a handful of websites, big-money bridge is inaccessible to most of the world’s estimated 50 million players.

Netherlands-based Bridge Big is the first to combine “the high-stakes cash and 24/7 access of online poker with everything we love about bridge,” according to CEO Rene de Waele. In their new cash games, IMP scores translate to cash stakes; and with beginning stakes of €0.20, €1, and €5, the amounts changing hands quickly becomes exciting. Cash games are scored and paid out after each deal, ensuring the full attention of players whether they play one board or 40.

“I think I was more excited as a player than as a business owner when our first €5 table filled up and the bidding started,” says de Waele, an avid bridge player who holds the title of Dutch Student Champion 2005, among others. “This is the game I’ve been dreaming of playing since I first put a few euros on the table on a poker site.”

All games are individual and anonymous.More than 5000 cash games have been played

since the Nov. 14 launch of Bridge Big. Visit bridgebig.com to learn more.

The InsiderIt is time for the Insider to say goodbye to

another great San Francisco NABC. The local committee was great. The ACBL staff was outstanding. The hotel was cooperative and appreciative that we came – we are already booked to come back in 2019. The finance people in Horn Lake had to print more Bridge Bucks. The Masterpoint folks even had to restock the vault. Ask Me Girl reports almost every player she spoke with was having a great time.

The NABC Planners have already started working on not only the St. Louis Spring NABC, but also on Atlanta for next summer and Phoenix for the fall. The NABC in St. Louis will be back at the Renaissance Hotel and America’s Center in downtown Gateway to the West. The playing space is ideal, the local committee has some great plans and the facilities are ordering extra water cups in anticipation of the arrival of the traveling ACBL roadshow. Make your travel plans, bridge dates and hotel reservations soon, as it promises to be another not-to-be-missed NABC.

Thanks for coming to San Francisco. We hope to see all of you in St. Louis in March. Check your Bridge Bulletin and the ACBL website for details on all our upcoming NABCs. We hope you will enjoy working with our new housing bureau – Travel Planners – as you make plans for 2013. Let us know if you have any concerns or if any of the staff at Headquarters can help in any way. Thanks!

Blue Ribbon reduxJohn Diamond and Brian Platnick won the six-

session Kaplan Blue Ribbon Pairs that concluded on Thursday evening and shared a couple of deals from their victory.

From the second final session:

Bd: 9 ♠ 3 Dlr: North ♥ A K Q J 10 6 4 2 Vul: E-W ♦ K 4 ♣ Q 6 ♠ A Q J 8 7 4 ♠ 10 9 6 ♥ 8 ♥ 7 5 3 ♦ Q J ♦ 10 8 7 6 ♣ K J 9 7 ♣ 10 5 3 ♠ K 5 2 ♥ 9 ♦ A 9 5 3 2 ♣ A 8 4 2

West North East South Diamond Platnick 1♣ (1) Pass 1♥ (2) 1♠ 4♥ All Pass(1) Precision: strong hand.(2) Artificial, 8-11 HCP, any pattern.

Precision methods allowed Diamond and Platnick to accidentally right-side the contract against a spade lead through the king.

West led he ♦Q, so Platnick captured this with dummy’s king, drew trumps, played a diamond to the ace and ruffed a diamond in dummy. When the suit did not divide evenly, Platnick ran dummy’s trumps. This is the position as the last trump was played:

♠ 3 ♥ 4 ♦ — ♣ Q 6 ♠ A Q ♥ — ♦ — Immaterial ♣ K J ♠ K ♥ — ♦ 9 ♣ A 8

On the final trump, declarer pitched a diamond, and West was stuck. If he discarded the ♣J, declarer would drop the ♣K, so he discarded the ♠Q instead. Platnick, however, could easily read this, so he played a spade to the king, endplaying West in clubs. Making six, but for an average result: That Blue Ribbon field is tough, after all.

On this deal, the opening lead successfully influenced Platnick’s choice of plays as declarer against Jan Martel and Chip Martel:

Bd: 25 ♠ J 10 4 Dlr: North ♥ K 9 6 Vul: E-W ♦ K 10 6 4 ♣ A J 3 ♠ A 6 ♠ 8 5 3 2 ♥ A 5 3 2 ♥ Q ♦ 9 8 7 5 ♦ Q J 3 2 ♣ K 8 2 ♣ Q 9 6 5 ♠ K Q 9 7 ♥ J 10 8 7 4 ♦ A ♣ 10 7 4

West North East South Jan M. Diamond Chip M. Platnick 1♦ (1) Pass 1♥ Pass 1NT (2) Pass 2♥ All Pass(1) 11-15 HCP, at least two diamonds.(2) 11-13 balanced.

Jan began with the ♠A and continued with her second spade.

Ordinarily, most declarers would tackle this trump combination by running the ♥J (or finessing the 9), but the lead changed the calculus. Platnick was correctly convinced that West started with a doubleton spade, so in order to play for the maximum number of tricks, he hoped West held the trump ace and East held the ♥Q to avoid West getting a spade ruff.

So after winning trick two in his hand, Platnick played a heart to the king. On this particular layout, Platnick’s hoped-for layout was even better than he imagined as Chip’s singleton ♥Q came tumbling down. Declarer lost one spade, one heart and one club for plus 170 and 32.5 out of 38 matchpoints.

For all events at an NABC other than a NABC+ rated event: Except for health-related equipment, or by permission of the Director-in-Charge of the tournament, cell phones, audible pagers or similar equipment may not be operated or operable in any manner in the playing area during a session of play. Any such equipment must not be visible during the session. Sponsoring organizations of other ACBL-sanctioned events are encouraged to adopt a similar policy.

3. These restrictions in numbers 1 and 2 above apply to all pairs, team members, captains, coaches, play recorders (except those designated by ACBL) and kibitzers and are in force throughout any actual playing session or segment of play.

4. A violation of any of the restrictions in numbers 1 and 2 above will result in a disciplinary penalty of one full board (12 IMPs at that form of scoring) for the first offense. A second offense will result in disqualification from the event for the pair/team. Kibitzers violating this policy will be removed from the playing area for the remainder of the session.

for NABC+ events.Zia Mahmood of New York City, who has earned

more Platinum in San Francisco than any other player so far (255.57 points) is now in second place with 709.73.

Thomas Bessis of Paris, France was leading the 2012 Player of the Year race before the Fall NABC began, has dropped to third place with 702.29 points. Bessis’s team, however, did not qualify in the opening round of the Reisinger, therefore he cannot catch Diamond or Mahmood.

suggestions for how The Longest Day could be a success, not only for the Alzheimer’s Association but also for the image of bridge.

“This event gives me an opportunity to invite social, rubber and even non-bridge players to come experience my club to try something different in honor of a worthy cause,” said Silvana Zangri of Sagamore Bridge Club. “I plan to contact high school service organizations like Key Club and teach their members to play mini-bridge so the younger generation has an opportunity to participate.”

ACBL staff, the Alzheimer’s Association and newly hired public relations agency, Golin Harris, are all working together to fine tune the play and publicity aspects of The Longest Day. Expect to hear more information about how members and clubs can participate beginning next year.

It’s time to share bridge’s secret with the world: your brain on bridge unlocks the door to healthy living.

but the majority of its founders were active in San Francisco’s gay community.

The club became popular among AIDS sufferers in the Eighties because it provided a social component with a game and enabled them to keep their minds sharp. As the founder of QuickTricks, Waggoner was an important figure for bridge in San Francisco, and was especially interested in developing new players.

“He really encouraged us to play and to play up, to get involved in the bridge community,” said Kim Fanady, QuickTricks manager. “When the NABC was here in 1990, Tadd rounded up 15 to 20 beginners and took us down to the Marriott to play. I never thought about playing in a national bridge tournament, but that experience hooked me on the scene.”

Without this experience, it is possible Fanady wouldn’t be the manager of QuickTricks Club today. The club’s management and players come from the community at large. All are welcome. They require only an interest in bridge and a friendly and cordial attitude toward fellow players.

Waggoner lost his fight with AIDS in 1993. The club continues to honor its founder with an annual Tadd Waggoner Memorial Dinner and game, and recently dedicated a brick in the “Yellow Brick Road” of LGBT history in Tadd’s memory.

Tribute to Kyle Larsen: ‘He made everybody feel better’

Family and friends of Kyle Larsen packed a meeting room at the Marriott on Friday night to share memories of the beloved Hall of Fame member who died Aug. 21. In story after story, players recounted Larsen’s wilder days, but also his gentle, caring side and his ability to affect anyone who met him in a positive way. At right are Rose Meltzer, who won two world championships playing with Larsen, Larsen’s wife, Gillian, with her daughter, Alex Rech.

Lev to the rescueBy Phillip Alder

In a board-a-match event, your team’s only job is to outscore the opponents on each deal. Whether your net plus is 10 or 1000, you receive only one point for that board.

Once in every few blue moons, though, when you hear the two results, it isn’t clear which team has gained the point.

This was Board 11 of the final session of the Mitchell Open BAM last Monday, rotated to make South the declarer:

Dlr: North ♠ K 10 9 6 Vul: None ♥ K J 10 8 7 ♦ — ♣ K 9 4 2 ♠ — ♠ 4 3 2 ♥ Q 6 3 ♥ A 9 5 4 2 ♦ Q J 10 9 6 4 ♦ A 8 5 ♣ 10 6 5 3 ♣ Q 7 ♠ A Q J 8 7 5 ♥ — ♦ K 7 3 2 ♣ A J 8 West North East South Bocchi Madala Pass Pass 1♠ 3♦ 4♦ 5♦ 6♠ Pass 7♠ Dbl All Pass

West North East South Gawrys Lev Pass Pass 1♠ 2♦ 2♠ (1) 3♦ 4♣ Pass 4♠ Pass 4NT Pass 5♣ (2) Pass 6♠ Pass Pass Dbl Redbl All Pass(1) Four spades.(2) One key card.

Agustin Madala felt confident in doubling 7♠, but was disillusioned. With the ♣Q in the slot, declarer brought home all 13 tricks.

When Piotr Gawrys did not cuebid 4♦, Sam Lev used a “psychic” Roman Key Card Blackwood to “hide” his void before jumping to 6♠. East unwisely doubled, and Lev redoubled.

West led a low heart, the 10 bringing out East’s ace. Again, basically whatever Lev did was going to work and he gained an overtrick.

So, which scores higher, 7♠ doubled and made or 6♠ redoubled and made with an overtrick? Surely you have those scores on the tips of your tongues!

No?Well, 7♠ doubled and made is 1770; 6♠

redoubled with an overtrick is 1820 – Lev had his teammates covered!
