Rule of Thirds

What is rule of thirds?

The rule of thirds is the composition of the way a subject is aligned in an image. The image is divided with two horizontal and two vertical lines. To use this feature correctly the main image is placed on one of the lines or the interceptors.

Examples of the Rule of Thirds: Front Cover

This magazine uses rule of thirds as each part of the band is separated in these three sections. The masthead is also along one of the lines created by the rule of thirds.

This is using rule of thirds as the cover model is in line with one of the sectors and their body is perfectly separated by the sections.

Examples of the Rule of Thirds: Contents

This is using rule of thirds as the contents in the page take up the first sector while the rest of the page takes up the other two. The photo at the bottom of the page is also positioned in the middle sector while the writing is in the third.

The model in this page is positioned in the style of rule of thirds as he is positioned in the last section and spreads across to the middle sector. The quote is also in the third sector.

Examples of the Rule of Thirds: Double Page Spread

The model is positioned in the end section and the headline takes up two of the sectors.

The model is positioned with the sector line through the centre of her face along with a line going through the large ‘S’
