WHAT IS VOC?VOC is Volatile Organic Compound. Interior of modern buildings is infestedwith wide range of Organic and Hydrocarbon gases, released fromsynthetically produced interior furnishings such as carpets, curtains, ceilingtiles, paint, fabric protective coatings and cleaning aids. Occupantscontributed VOC include cigarette smoke, body odor, deodorant, food odor.Outdoor air intake to HVAC System may introduce automotive andindustrial effluents and odor, common in Downtown and Industriallocations. Continuous presence of VOC, even in low concentrations,adversely affect Indoor Air Quality, as occupants breathe them continuously.Many Indoor VOC are classified toxic, carcinogenic or carcinogen promoters.Some are odorous. Some irritate mucous embranes. VOC should be reducedsignificantly for safety, health and long term care of occupants.Ruks Engineered Ozone System eliminates or reduces VOC dramatically .

WHAT IS ODOR?Odor is detection and interpretation of a specific organic gas, by human olfactory senses. All odor is caused by chemicals. Someodorous gases are toxic and or carcinogenic, example benzene (gasoline), toluene, and methane. Not all odor are harmful, nor allharmful gases odorous. Yet, all odor are classified as VOC within the realm of IAQ. Odor may exist as transient odor – odor thatlasts just as long as the activity causing it lasts, or resident odor – odor causing chemicals retained in cellulose substances such ascarpets, ceiling tiles, and furniture fabric, and released at all times. No system eliminates resident odor except Engineered OzoneSystem. There are no known units to quantify odor, except human judgment.Ruks Engineered Ozone System eliminates or reduces Transient and Resident Odor.

WHAT IS CO2?CO2 is Carbon Dioxide. Common sources of CO2 in indoor space areexhalation by occupants, migration from outdoor air, and coal or woodburning heaters. CO2 is not a VOC, not a carcinogen, not a carcinogenpromoter, nor is it toxic. However, it is important to ensure CO2

concentration is not high. At elevated levels, CO2 causes reducedconcentration, fatigue, loss of productivity and lethargy. Permissiblelevel of CO2 for most applications is 1000 PPM by ASHRAE and OSHA.

WHY DO HVAC SYSTEMS PROMOTE GROWTH OF FUNGI?Conditions prevalent in air handling units and air ducts such as temperature, humidity,moisture on cooling coil and drain pan, and porous surface of duct lining are congenial forgrowth and propagation of mold and fungi. Through air vents, they enter indoor space. Fungicause allergies, breathing disorders, irritation and loss of concentration.Ruks Engineered Ozone System eliminates or reduces Mold & Fungi dramatically .

WHY DO HVAC SYSTEMS PROMOTEGROWTH OF AIR BORNE BACTERIA?Mold and Fungi are living organisms and form source of food andnutrients upon which air borne bacteria grow and propagate. WHY DOES DUST ACCUMULATE IN AC DUCTS?Force of adhesion is necessary for any particulate to adhere to any surface. In AC ducts, this is provided by bio adhesive forcecontributed by mold and fungi. If these are eliminated or reduced, dust particulates do not have the force to stick to duct surface.Ducts remain clean at all times.Ruks Engineered Ozone System keeps AC ducts and Cooling Coil free of dust and particulate Contaminant.

WHAT IS OZONE? Ozone is 3 atom molecule of oxygen with weak bonds. It is a powerful oxidizingagent. It is an unstable gas and reverts quickly to diatomic oxygen molecule or O2.When present with VOC, it oxidizes them. In the presence of ozone, VOC is subjectto continuous oxidation, transforming it into several transient gases. Resultantgases are totally harmless or less harmful. Total VOC is dramatically reduced. Odoris result of VOC. As VOC are removed, odor is almost completely eliminated. Netresult is indoor space with significantly reduced VOC, odor and smoke.

Fungi propagate by absorbing ambient oxygen, by process ofosmosis. Ozone, with oxygen, enters through outermembranes of cells of fungi. Ozone oxidizes the organicmatter in fungi. This retards cell multiplication andpropagation of fungi. Gradually, their colonies diminish. In thepresence of Ozone, fungi will not recultivate. Low residual

ozone concentration generated in Ruks Engineered OzoneSystem does not function as fungicide. It eliminates fungi bygradually decolonizing them. Elimination of mold and fungideprives food and nutrients for air borne bacteria to grow andpropagate in duct and coil. Without adequate supply of food,bacteria do not grow in ducts and coil.

OZONE AND FUNGI

WHAT ARE THE PRECAUTIONS?Ozone is beneficial in reducing VOC, Odor and depleting fungi. It is very important to ensure residual level of ozone does notexceed regulatory maximum permissible level.

CAN OZONE REDUCE CO2?Ozone cannot remove or reduce CO2, as CO2 is not oxidizable.Conventional method of limiting CO2 buildup in indoorenvironment is by diluting with outdoor air with low CO2

content.

WHY USE PLATE CORONA IN AIR STREAM, AND AVOID ANNULAR SPACE CORONA, FOR IAQ APPLICATIONS?

Assume a space where VOC is neutralized by ozone, where anarbitrary unit V represents the extent of VOC, and an arbitraryunit Oz represents ozone concentration. In a well balancedsystem, they both are very low. In this scenario, V and Oz arelow.

If pollution is now generated in this space, increase in VOC (δV)in relation to room volume is extremely low, in the order ofparts per million. Yet the adverse effect on IAQ of the space isvery high. To neutralize this small increase in VOC (δV), we needa small increase in ozone (δOz), and the generators shouldrespond to provide this as rapidly as δV changes. δOz/δT mustbe proportional to δV/δT. To achieve this, it is necessary to haveozone generator where production density of ozone (ozoneproduction per unit area of corona surface) is very low and

provide rapid response. That is, change of production of ozoneper unit time δOz/δT follows the same rate as δV/δT.

This is the key to achieving effective Indoor Air Quality, whereVOC is reduced to as low level as possible, and yet keep residualconcentration of ozone as low as possible. This is achieved onlyby the unique design of multi plate type of corona used in RuksOzone Generators, designed to produce minute density ofozone per unit area of corona surface, and yet have adequatecapacity to handle the load. Such system delineatesconcentration and quantity vectors, allowing concentrationvector to be held constant at low level, while allowing quantityvector to be altered, within reasonable limits. These aremounted inside the duct, thus providing the same media tosense VOC and Ozone.

OZONE GENERATOR PRODUCT SPECIFICATIONS1. Ozone Generator shall be self contained unit, with all components

factory assembled in one neat, compact package, suitable for duct mounting.

2. Components in contact with air shall be enclosed in stainless steel casing 18 G thick with sufficient stamped integral openings to allowadequate flow of air over the corona discharge plates.

3. Method of ozone production shall be by principle of corona discharge, with multiple numbers of double sided corona plates. Production density of ozone per unit surface area of corona surfaceshall be very low. Ozone shall be produced from the supply air of AHU/Fan. Air pressure over the corona surface shall not exceed air pressure in the duct. Electrical frequency applied on corona plates shall be the same as line frequency (60 Hz or 50 Hz). All corona plates shall be housed in a common stainless steel enclosure.

4. Detection/Sensing of VOC and production of ozone shall be in the same gaseous medium.

5. Corona plates shall be mounted on generator head, specially manufactured to close tolerance, of material that repels accumulation of sediments from tar, nicotine and grease.

6. The Transformer shall be electrical induction type. Solid state voltage converter shall not be acceptable. The Transformer shall be Cross Ferro Magnetic Type. Secondary windings shall not burn, generate smoke, or elevate greater than 90ºF (32ºC), even if the high voltage secondary output is short circuited for extended period of time, in full load conditions. Upon removal of the short circuit, the transformer shall revert to normal operation without any damage or loss of efficiency, or reduced insulation capacity, or blow out of fuse, or trip of circuit breaker.

7. The transformer shall be fully encapsulated. The encapsulation is to ensure the transformer windings and core are fully impregnated with epoxy rated for use in electrical equipment. The epoxy shall penetrate into various layers of primary and secondary windings, and into the various sections of the core. This is to ensure electrical spark, if any, shall be contained and isolated within the specific spotof occurrence in the windings, and temperature elevation if any shall be contained and isolated within the specific spot of occurrence of the winding or in the layers of the core. The epoxy for encapsulation shall be fire rated to UL94V0. The electrical properties of the epoxy for this encapsulation shall be ;a. Dielectric strength at 23ºC not less than 425 volt/milb. Voltage resistivity at 23ºC not less than 2 x 1015 Ohm Cm

8. The encapsulation of the transformer shall be done in a one piece die cast metallic enclosure 18 G CRS. The top cover shall be riveted with a fire rated epoxy to UL 94V0. This shall ensure the transformer is completely fire rated and non flammable.

9. The metallic enclosure and encapsulation shall also render the transformer totally safe to operate even if there is settlement and deposition of moisture or water on the transformer due to carry over moisture from Cooling Coil. The transformer shall not burn, short circuit or be damaged, even if fully immersed in water.These are essential safety prerequisites as the Transformer/Generator is installed in the Air Conditioning Duct, andthe facility houses human occupants.

10. Entire Transformer shall be Tested to UL2043: Fire Test for Fire & Visible Smoke Release for Discreet Products & Accessories Installed in Air Handling Space and Recognized to UL506: Safety Specialty Transformer.

11. Penetration of high voltage conductor from Transformer Enclosure to Corona Enclosure shall be through Embedded Porcelain SS Solid Transmitter. Cable insulation, rubber, synthetic or ceramic bushing

shall not be used as reliable insulation for enclosure penetration of high voltage.

12. Primary of Transformer shall be rated for input voltage varying from 0 to 110V (0 to 220V)

13. High voltage electrical wire from the transformer secondary terminal to Porcelain Embedded Transmitter, and further from Transmitter to Corona contact plates shall be rated for 20KV, 150ºC, certified to be ozone and corona resistant, have high flexibility, andshall be silicone insulated. Wire diameter shall not be less than 18 AWG. The wire shall be rated to UL3239 and VW-1 Flame Test. These shall be stamped on the wire. This is essential and cannot be waived from safety standpoint, as this wire carries high voltage.

14. At client’s request, pre shipment inspection and testing of the equipment shall be provided to the user or to the consultant, and or his authorized representative at the manufacturer’s facility. Besides the normal tests, following tests are mandatory;a. Transformer secondary output, under full voltage and load will

be subject to short circuit continuously for minimum of 24 hours. The primary and secondary windings shall not burn nor elevate intemperature greater than 90ºF (32ºC).

b. Upon release of the short circuit, the transformer shall revert to normal operation without any change or modification or repair, or fuse blow out, or trip of circuit breaker.

c. Demonstrate safe and undamaged operation of the transformer at full secondary voltage and load, with transformer fully immersed in a tank of water.

d. At inspectors instructions, cut open a transformer through the windings and core to demonstrate the penetration of the encapsulation epoxy into various layers of primary and secondarywindings, and into the core.

e. Demonstrate that high voltage wire is stamped with ratings of voltage to 20KV, temperature to 150ºC, and UL rating 3239 and UL VW-1.

15. The generator shall be suitable for mounting in duct with airflow inhorizontal or vertical or angular direction, and for air flow in eitherdirection, right to left, or top to bottom, or vice versa.

16. The generator shall have the feature for interlock to motor of the AHU, to prevent start of the generator unless the fan is energized.

17. Each and every part and component of the generator including bushing, grommet, corona plate, standoff, paint, and ink in printing labels, shall be fire resistant, and individually listed to UL standards.

18. All parts and components, bonding compound, bushing, standoff, paint, and screen printing ink shall be individually listed to highest UL standards.

19. The generator shall be provided with stainless steel flange in either side to enable mounting to metal frame, to be installed inside the duct.

20. Ozone Generator shall be manufactured to permit easy withdrawals and refitting in duct with minimum use of tools or hardware to refit the generator to duct.

21. Generator output shall be suitable for modulation by automatic or manual controls.

22. The generator shall be rated for operation on 0 to 100 % RH. 23. The generator shall be suitable for operation on electrical supply

220 to 240 (110 – 220) Volts, Single Phase, 50/60 Hz 3 wire system.24. The Generator shall be Classified to UL 1995 ABQK and Tested and

Certified for Safety against Fire and Smoke to UL 2043. It shall be CE Certified.
