M.C. Miller's Integrated CIS and DCVG Survey Equipment

Red-Handled Data-Probe (Cat. #SIN015) Green-Handled Data-Probe (Cat. #SIN0155)

Dual probe operation requires one red-handled and one green-handled data probe. For dual probe operation, the red-handled cane is held in the left hand and the green-handled cane is held in the right hand.

The number of data-probes required depends on the survey type:

CIS can be performed using one or two data-probes, however, in terms of current-interrupted CIS, the survey process is slower when only one data-probe is in use, as the operator must have the probe in contact with the soil for a complete interruption cycle after triggering a voltage recording. On the other-hand, the CIS process is more efficient with two data-probes in use, as at least one data-probe is in contact with the soil at all times as the operator walks down the length of the pipeline, and there is no delay in recording On/Off voltages. Also, by using two data-probes, voltage recordings can be triggered via the push-button switch on one of the probes while the location of survey flags (typically at 100 feet intervals) can be registered via the push-button switch on the second data-probe.

DCVG Surveys require two data-probes (one red-handled, the other green-handled), since these surveys involve measuring the potential difference between two locations on the surface of the soil above the pipe.

Combined DCVG/CIS Surveys, i.e., when DCVG and CIS data are collected during one pass down the length of the pipeline, also require two data-probes (one red-handled, the other green-handled). In this case, our Switch Box Controller is also required.

NOTE: In cases where surveys are being performed through thick brush that might cause the data-probe to get caught up, it is recommended that a wire tie be used, as illustrated in the above photograph, in order to minimize the strain on the cable plug as the data-probe is pulled through the brush.

Data-probe cables are used to connect our reference electrode data-probes to the voltmeter in our data-loggers. When connected via a data-probe cable, the color of the band on a data-probe cable indicates to which side of the voltmeter the reference electrode will be connected.

If a black-band data-probe cable is used, the reference electrode data-probe will be connected to the negative side of the voltmeter. Such a data-probe cable will result in negative pipe-to-soil readings when the positive side of the voltmeter is connected to the pipe.

On the other-hand, if a red-band data-probe cable is used, the reference electrode data-probe will be connected to the positive side of the voltmeter. Such a data-probe cable will result in positive pipe-to-soil readings when the negative side of the voltmeter is connected to the pipe.

Black-Band Cable (Cat. #12660) Red-Band Cable (Cat. #12665)

Switch Box Controller (Cat. #12555)

The Switch Box Controller allows DCVG and CIS data to be collected on a single pass down the length of the pipeline. Includes a cable to connect the Switch Box with the G1 data-logger.

Belt Pack(Cat. #12710)

The Belt Pack is used to carry the G1 data-logger at waist level, in a hands-free fashion, and it has an integrated dual-probe adapter for use on both CIS and DCVG surveys. The dual-probe adapter is used to connect the data-probes to the G1 data-logger. The Hip

Pack trail wire dispenser is used in-conjunction with the Belt Pack for CIS. (The counter/display unit shown in the photograph is not included with the Belt Pack)

Note: If a Backpack is purchased to carry trail wire for CIS, we recommend the Belt Pack (in addition) for DCVG surveys, as the Backpack is not required for DCVG surveys.

A trail wire dispenser is required for CIS and Combined DCVG/CIS surveys. It is not required for DCVG surveys.

When a wire chainer and a counter unit are used in conjunction with a trail wire dispenser system, an audible signal is generated every 2.5 feet (or every meter, in the case of the metric system) and the operator triggers readings in response to the audible signal. Alternatively, readings can be triggered automatically via a trigger cable. Automatic triggering is not possible for Combined DCVG/CIS surveys, as in this case the DCVG voltage is recorded first (at each measurement location) and the CIS voltage recordings are triggered internally by the data-logger itself.

Option 1: Hip Pack (Cat. #HIP010)

Our Hip Pack dispenser accommodates either 1 mile (# 30 gauge) or 3 mile (# 34 gauge) trail wire spools.

Option 2: Hip Pack with Chainer & Counter Unit

U.S. Version (Cat. #SIN040) Metric Version (Cat. #SIN045)

Our Hip Pack dispenser accommodates either 1 mile (# 30 gauge) or 3 mile (# 34 gauge) trail wire spools.

Option 3: Backpack with Chainer & Counter Unit

U.S. Version (Cat. #12715) Metric Version (Cat. #12720)

Our Backpacks accommodate 5 mile (# 30 gauge) trail wire spools.

We supply spools of trail wire for use in our Hip Pack and Backpack trail wire dispensers. The trail wire comes in two thickness options (# 30 gauge and # 34 gauge) for the Hip Pack and one thickness option for the Backpack (# 30 gauge).

Option 1: Spool of # 30 gauge wire for the Hip Pack (approx. 1 mile per spool)

(Cat. #TRI021)

Option 2: Spool of # 34 gauge wire for the Hip Pack (approx. 3 mile per spool)

(Cat. #TRI022)

Option 3: Spool of # 30 gauge wire for the Backpack (approx. 5 miles per spool)

(Cat. #TRI020)

GPS Extension Antenna (Cat. #12740) The G1 data-logger comes standard with a GPS “thumb” antenna.

With regard to pipeline survey work, it is recommended that the thumb antenna be replaced with our GPS extension antenna, which allows the operator to place the antenna on top of their cap (affixed in place via a piece of Velcro). This

arrangement provides the GPS antenna with an un-shielded view of the satellites, regardless of the operator’s orientation.

G1 Serial Cable (Cat. #126730)

If you will be using a Trimble GPS Pathfinder Receiver (XR, XRS, Power or Pocket) as an external source of GPS data for the G1 data-logger (as opposed to using the G1’s

Page 8: RUGGED WINDOWS CE GPS HANDHELD - Business development … · 2013-08-16 · DCVG Surveys require two data-probes (one red-handled, the other green-handled), since these surveys involve

internal GPS receiver), you will require the G1 Serial Cable, which is used to connect the serial output cable of the Trimble unit, which terminates in a 9-pin female plug, to the G1’s right-hand (Com4) terminal.

The G1 Serial Cable has a 9-pin male plug on one end (which connects to the serial output cable from the Trimble unit) and a 26-Way Mini-D plug (male) on the other end (which connects to the G1).
