Dartmouth Rugby Football Club

Friends Report Preseason 04

Dear Friends of Dartmouth Rugby,

On behalf of the Dartmouth Rugby Football Club, I would like to thank everyone who has supported the DRFC over the years. Annual fall tours to Canada and spring tours throughout the rugby playing world would not be possible without the generous support of our friends and family, assistance from our experienced alumni, and guidance from our Board of Governors.

The 2003 2004 rugby season was a difficult one for the DRFC. In the fall the team finished with a 4-3 record, with two of the games being lost by one and seven points. For the first time in many years the DRFC failed to qualify for the Northeast Tournament. Similar misfortune struck the team in the Ivy League Tournament this past spring as the DRFC finished with a 2 1 record and an unimpressive fifth place.

Heading into the 2004 fall season, I am confident that the DRFC will reassert itself as one of top teams in the Northeast. The new regime is the most athletic team that I have had the pleasure to play alongside. Every member of the team brings a positive, enthusiastic, and hard working attitude to training sessions, which is essential to winning games and is one of the great, longstanding characteristics of the DRFC. I strongly believe that we have the players and coaching personnel necessary to qualify for the Sweet Sixteen and beyond.

The fall season begins in early September. After several days of intense practice the team will depart for the annual fall tour to Canada. While in Montreal the team will play traditional rival McGill University. The DRFC will then host Carlton University from Ottawa, Canadaa semi-finalist in last years Ontario university championships. The DRFC will then begin the fall season with a home match against Boston College on September 18th.

The Dartmouth Rugby Football Club has been able to perpetuate a tradition of success, camaraderie, and excellence on and off the pitch since 1951. With hard work, determination, and the continued support of our friends, families, and alumni, this tradition will stay alive far into the future.

I hope to see you at a match this fall.

Yours in Rugby,

Erik Richardson

Player Profile: John Turner 04

A new player, John Turner 04, joined the DRFC last winter. This 6 5 250 pound Southern California native played for Dartmouth Football for the past four years and now that his eligibility is up has turned to rugby. He is expected to make a major impact on the team next year as an oversized loosehead prop and/or lock. Scrumhalf Tom Manzo 07 recently sat down with JT and asked him a few questions.

Were you recruited to play football at Dartmouth?

JT: Yes, I was recruited as a defensive end, but after my sophomore year there was a shortage of offensive tackles so I put on some weight and my coach moved me there.

What turned you on to rugby?

JT: Well once football was done I needed something new to do with my time. I had heard about rugby from some of my friends and I love contact sports so rugby was really the game for me. I really enjoy it because Im not just moving people all game long. I finally get to play with the ball.

How much longer do you plan on sticking around Dartmouth?

JT: Well I am hopefully going to be here for two more years. I graduated with a BA in Engineering Sciences but I am hoping to further my engineering degree right here at Thayer. Ill be working towards my BE this fall and if all goes well I will be accepted into the MS program. Otherwise, I dont know how much longer Ill be here.

What are some of the things you are involved in around campus?

JT: Well my junior year I was a part of the Committee on Standards and now I am a UGA in the Choates. Also, I was president of GDX this past winter and now I am the new member chair. In addition, I was just recently named Greek Man of the Year. I am also a rather serious pianist and just composed my first three-movement work.

Yes I was at your show. Tell me about your involvement with music.

JT: Ive been playing the piano ever since kindergarten and I have always really enjoyed it. I just like to play for fun. The piece that I composed took me 10 months to write and would have been my senior project if I was a music major. However, I just composed the piece for myself and am very proud of it.

What was the message behind your piece? Was each movement different?

I wrote the piece about the love in my life. It wasnt about my wanting someone to love me, but rather a piece about my longing to love a woman and my desire to know her and to appreciate her for all that she is. The first movement is about my frustration. The second is more contemplative as I try and reason through the emptiness. And the third is a realization and explanation of the longing in my soul.

Wow. Is there anything else you would like in the article?

Not really. Oh wait, if any DRFC alums have pull in Thayer I would definitely appreciate their help getting into the MS program. That way I can stick around and play rugby for a couple more years.

Board Elections

The next Board meeting will be held Sunday morning October 31, during Homecoming Weekend. All alumni are welcome to attend. The Board will have four slots up for election at our Spring 2005 meeting, and as always we encourage all alumni to consider getting involved. We are particularly hoping to get more involvement from classes in the 1950s and 1960s, who are currently underrepresented on the Board. For more info, please contact:

Dan Kenslea 75

Chair - DRFC Alumni Board of Governors

Work: 617-654-2206

Web Page and Email

We are currently revamping the DRFC website which will be kept current with the team and results beginning in the early fall. Keep up with Dartmouth Rugby action at http://www.dartmouth.edu/~rugby.

Also, in trying to keep up with the times, the DRFC would like to expand our Alumni Email list. If you are not currently on the DRFC email list, you can be added by contacting Scott Penner, Alumni Relations Chair at [email protected]. As a part of this Alumni list you will receive weekly game reports and information on team travel that will allow you advance notice of when and where the Dartmouth men will be in your area.

Clubhouse Construction

Ground was ceremoniously broken on Saturday, May 8, for the Corey Ford Rugby Clubhouse, which will soon be the permanent home of Dartmouth Rugby. The Clubhouse, which will be located at Garipay field across Lyme Road from the Hanover Country Club, was made possible through the generous bequest of Corey Ford 21a, who left his estate to the Club, supplemented by more than $1.5 million of alumni support, and financial assistance from the College. Construction began in mid July and progress has been rapid.

In the 50s and 60s, the DRFC used Coreys house in Han- over as a de facto clubhouse, but in keeping with the traditions of English clubs, all of whom had their own clubhouses, the DRFC has always wanted a home to call its own. At the time of his death, Corey willed the majority of his estate, including his house, to the College for the construction of a club house to be known as the Corey Ford Rugby Club House.

After languishing for several decades, activity on the clubhouse project began in the early 90s. Several rounds of fundraising, years of design and internal college approvals, several neighbor lawsuits including one to the New Hampshire Supreme Court, two sites, three designs, various zoning and planning board processes, have finally brought us to the start of construction. The facility will center around the Deevy clubroom for hosting teams, and will also include on the upper level a trophy room (yet unnamed), the Lahey coaches office, the Old Green Bar, the Gleason mezzanine, the Kilmartin deck and various other features. On the lower level will be the Pringle Dartmouth mens locker room, the Kelly Fowler Hunter Dartmouth womens locker room, Class of 68 visiting locker room, the Swett trainers room, and a yet unnamed visiting locker room. The Kilmartin deck will be south of the clubroom, overlooking Brophy Field, where games will be played. To the clubhouses north will be the Battle Field. As you can see from the DRFC web site (http://www.dartmouth.edu/~rugby), the building has some of the style of an Adirondack Lodge, encompassing approximately 6,500 square feet. Randall T. Mudge of Lyme, New Hampshire is the Architect and the Trumbull-Nelson Company of Hanover is on board as the general contractor.

As intercollegiate rugby becomes more competitive, the clubhouse will be a fantastic tool to help us raise our profile and attract interest from top high-school rugby players who might not otherwise consider Dartmouth as an option, said DRFC president Dave Grey 05. The Corey Ford Clubhouse will be the finest collegiate rugby clubhouse in the United States and will be a boon to the Dartmouth program, both in recruiting and in ongoing inspiration to the club.

Speaking at the groundbreaking ceremony were College President James Wright, Director of Athletics and Recreation Josie Harper, and former DRFC coach Wayne Young 72. Head Coach Alex Magleby 00 and DWRC Coach Deb Archambault 85 were interviewed afterwards and featured on nationally televised Fox Sports World. The men of the DRFC attended in full force and in full formal attire, as did the womens rugby team. Several members of the DRFC Board of Governors were in attendance as were a smattering of DRFC alumni. The event was the centerpiece of the DRFC alumni weekend, which also included a golf outing and a 7s tournament.

Stay tuned for information on the gala dedication, tentatively scheduled for the weekend of September 23-25, 2005! Please contact Richard Akerboom 80 with any questions: [email protected]

Donor Plaque

On the opposite side is a preliminary design for the Corey Ford Rugby Clubhouse donor plaque. It includes, we believe, all donors whose gifts qualified, AND were processed by gift recording by 9/15/04. Recall that for parents, friends and classes in the 50s and before, the threshold is $2,500, for the 60s $2,000, for the 70s $1,500, for the 80s $1,000, and for all others $500. In addition, classes of the new millenium have the option of getting recognized as a group for a total donation of $500; we have shown such donations for demonstration purposes. If you have any questions, contact Rich Akerboom by email at [email protected], or by phone, 802-291-6116. If you want to join in, make your gift payable to Dartmouth College and send to Gift Recording, the address is on the DRFC web site http://www.dartmouth.edu/~rugby. The plaque is made of NH pink granite.

Alumni in the News

Chris Vorys 03 recently returned from a Fullbright scholarship in Malaysia, is rumored to be the new player/coach for the Columbia Med School rugby team.

Mike Linchitz 02 continues his successes with the New York Athletic Club. Linchitz, playing loose forward, helped NYAC to the Super League Semi-final as well as a national berth in the USA Rugby Sevens National Championships. Joining him at NYAC were DRFC coach Alex Magleby 00 and undergraduate Josh Weinberg 07.

1999 DRFC Co-Captain Kevin Whitcher led Denver Barbarians to the final match at the USA Rugby 7s Championships.

Jim Calmas 84 is rumored to be helping out with the US Maccabiah squad alongside Maccabiah head coach and former DRFC coach, Stu Krohn. Isaac Kardon 05 was one of only three collegians at the recent Maccabiah trials.

Ryan Moody 00 is relocating to Boston where he plans to pick up rugby once again with national D-I champions Boston Irish Wolfhounds.

Chris Henrich 90 and wife Lisa Huff Henrich 92 currently play for the Buffalo Rugby Club and Buffalo Womens Rugby Club, respectively.

Whitcher and Alex Magleby 00 teamed up once again to help the US Eagles qualify for the 2005 Rugby 7s World Cup in the Cayman Islands. The official USA Rugby press release follows.

USA Sweeps to 7s World Cup Qualification

(Cayman IslandsUSA Rugby) 10 June 2004 -- Suffocating defense and clinical finishing carried the USA to the North American-West Indies 7s championship and qualification for the 2005 7s Rugby World Cup.

Prop Alex Magleby's side conceded just 1 try while running in 41 scores through 6 unbeaten games.

The US downed Bermuda 61-0 in the final to clinch its fourth 7s World Cup berth. Center Jovesa Naivalu, who tallied 13 tries over two days, scored the game's first three tries on the way to four for the contest.

The closest match was Wednesday's quarterfinal against Jamaica, a 31-7 win that saw Naivalu and David Fee score two tries each.

"It was very important that we confirmed a booking for the World Cup. The way in which we did it was also a key for us. We played some good rugby so we can go home happy," USA 7s coach John McKittrick said.

The USA are the twelfth nation to qualify for the 2005 world championship in Hong Kong. Another twelve will qualify from Europe, Asia, and Africa over the next three months.

New Zealand are the current 7s World Cup champions, and also the World Sevens Series titlists.

Friends of Rugby Appeal

Enclosed are reply cards for the annual Friends appeal. Thank you to all of the donors from the 2003 - 2004 Friends campaign. With the imminent construction of the clubhouse, your donations are made all the more important, as we strive to maintain our touring history, coaching excellence, and in turn, our on-field successes. With a large portion of the endowment headed towards our new facility, your gifts are more appreciated than ever. We hope you can support us again this year. Your gift cannot be credited to the Dartmouth College Fund but it is tax deductible and will be placed in a joint Friends of Rugby fund exclusively for the support of Dartmouth mens and womens rugby. Thank you for your continued support.

We are also selling ad space in our fall match program and poster. If interested in purchasing advertising space, please email Alex Magleby 00: [email protected]

Summer sevens 2004

More than 30 sophomores played rugby 7s this summer. Many new faces contributed to the success the team had at recent tournaments. These included victories over mens clubs at the Acton 10s and Newport 7s tournaments. The 06 class was very enthusiastic this summer, playing touch at Sachem Field Tuesdays and Thursdays as well as skill sessions on the occasional Monday and Wednesday. The 06s were joined by random rugby enthusiasts from the Upper Valley.

The DRFC and the DWRC at the Corey Ford Clubhouse groundbreaking. See page 3 for details.

Club History Appeal

The Corey Ford Clubhouse is finally breaking ground as we have surmounted the obstacles of the past 8+ years. The DRFC plans to use the clubhouse to capture and document the history of the club, and so appeals to all alumni and friends for any old videos, pictures, letters, movies, trophies, memorabilia etc. or suggestions on where we could locate them. Construction of the clubhouse will undoubtedly be one of the best things to ever happen for the DRFC and every bit of history counts. If you do have something that you would like to contribute to the clubhouse, or other related suggestions, then please contact Alumni Relations Chair Scott Penner 06 at [email protected] for further details.

2003 2004 Friends Contributors

Thank you to all who supported last years Friends of Dartmouth Rugby campaign. It is your loyal and enthusiastic support that continues to propel Dartmouth Rugby forward. Your contributions make the successes, traditions, and memories of the DRFC possible for new generations of student-athletes. Thanks!
