Illegal house demolished

IN MAZARRÓN, a house situated on the first line of the Bolnuevo beach was demolished this week.

A judge ruled that the property was an illegal build, was directly af-fected by the Coastal Act and so was torn down on Tuesday after a court order was issued. Emiliano Casal defends his Championship

Emiliano with part of his supporters club

NEXT FRIDAY, April 4th, professional boxing makes a long overdue return to Torrevieja, when the City of Salt’s first ever professional boxer and now Spanish Champion Emiliano Casal, defends his lightweight belt.

There is a lot of local anticipation for this fight because the Spanish Lightweight champion has not boxed in his home town since 2007. Although Emiliano is the last fight of the night and top of the bill, there is a full card of fighters on the bill. Friday’s fight night location is the Cecilio Gallego Sports Pavilion, the one with the blue roof, with the first of the eight bouts starting at 8.30pm. The card mixes professional and amateur bouts, with boxers from England,

Spain and Norway taking part. Apart from Emiliano, there is also an in-

ternational heavyweight bout featuring the torrevejense ‘Moja’. The latest news is that there may be a change to the main bill as it’s emerged that the main challenger for the fly-weight belt, boxer Juan Carlos López ‘King Da-luz’, is suffering from tendonitis in his wrist and has withdrawn his challenge. However, stepping into the ring may be an even bigger challenge for Emiliano in the form of 30 year-old Andoni Alonso, who in true Muhammad Ali style has warned Emiliano Casal of a “TKO in the fifth round”. Alonso is in great shape having demolished his opponent in just two rounds last week, so is feeling very confident at giving Emiliano a first notch battle, over the scheduled 10 rounds.

The world wears Spanish fashionSPAIN’S FASHION exports have grown by 47% since the beginning of the economic crisis, with the two major brands Inditex and Camper selling 8 out of 10€. The trade balance in this sector is now less than €800 million, compared to 6.229 million five years ago.

Ambitious mall project evaporates

Part of the area close to Monebello II

IN 2007 Algorfa’s municipal govern-ment announced details of the con-struction of an ambitious Commercial Centre that would have created up-wards of 2,000 much needed new jobs. The project was announced around the same time as the then proposed Zenia Blvd, raising eyebrows in many quarters as to how two huge shopping centres would be able to attract enough con-sumers to justify their existence. This week Algorfa’s City Council returned one million euros to the developer and the project in its original form, is now

closed but may be offered to other inter-ested parties in the future.

The project was to build one of the largest malls in the country, totalling 563,000 square metres on the outskirts of Algorfa. The PP government team gave approval this week to the request of the developing company, Orishas Trust, to whom they returned the one million euros they deposited as secu-rity in 2007. The developer noted that over the last five years, that the City has failed to conclude the administra-tive process of the partial plan to al-low them to start construction on the shopping complex, which had Eroski

as main attraction and anchor store, as announced at the time by Mayor Anto-nio Lorenzo Paredes (PP).

According to the Spanish press, the Partido Popular government now says it will try again to promote the area future development. The area de-signed for the commercial centre lies around Montebello II industrial area. This is a privileged location with ex-cellent connections of the AP-37 mo-torway exit to Torrevieja , next to the old prefabricated factory and a major hub for traffic for Algorfa, Almoradi, Rojales, Rojales, Los Montesinos, Que-sada, San Miguel and Torrevieja.

Blind Justice GABRIEL PÉREZ Castellanos is waiting to learn whether she will be granted permission from a panel of judges to be-come Spain’s first blind magistrate. Gabriel, a law graduate in Vallodolid, applied eight and a half months ago for ap-proval of her application and she is still waiting. The panel is considering what difficulties Gabriel may encounter when processing evidence.

Torrevieja Hospital exceeds 10,000 birthsON THURSDAY morning at 1.30am, Torrevieja Hospital celebrated its 10,000 birth with the arrival of Ramon. Torrevieja Hospital has reached 10,000 births since opening in June 2010, and in the last year alone the centre attended over 1,200 births. Ramon’s parents, Maria Bermudez and Ramon Fernandez are both Torrevieja residents and expressed their joy at the birth of their third child and gave their thanks to the team of Gynecology and Obstetrics. Torrevieja Hospital has six labour rooms, for both delivery and individual recovery and are equipped with the latest technology. In addition, the hospital provides the application of epidural anesthesia 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, unless medically contraindicated. Another major advantage is the adjustable bed of the delivery room that offers mothers to be the option of giving birth in the position she chooses, giving you the opportunity to decide how you want to have your baby.

Spain number one in A Place in the SunSPAIN, AND especially the Costa Blanca region, will be on the mind of thousands of interested property buyers this week-end. ‘A Place in the Sun Live’ is the UK’s largest and best-at-tended overseas property exhibition and is taking place at Olympia London this weekend, from today 28th March, through to Sunday 30th March 2014.

Exhibiting at the show are such well known local compa-nies as TM, MASA and Marsol Internacional from Torrevieja, of the 160 companies exhibiting, 70 of these are promoting Spain at the show. Britain’s Foreign and Commonwealth Of-fice is represented by Alicante’s British Consul Paul Rodwell, who is a key speaker at the event. He is on stage on five occa-sions in the Theatre for the featured talk on ‘How, what and where to buy in Spain’ as the only impartial speaker with three other presenters, promoting Spain.

The official exhibition of the hit television series, ‘A Place in the Sun Live’ attracts thousands of serious overseas prop-erty hunters every spring and autumn. The show features a packed programme of free-to-attend seminars in ‘The A Place in the Sun Hub’ with advice and insight from Jasmine Har-man, Jonnie Irwin, Amanda Lamb and Laura Hamilton. Their experience has been gained from many house-hunting epi-sodes around the world with the ‘A Place in the Sun’ TV crew plus series Editor Liz Rowlinson who hosts a panel with indus-

try insiders and expert Question and Answer sessions.Of last year’s show, presenter Jonnie Irwin said; “The discerning visitors to ‘A Place

in the Sun Live’ at London Olympia were clearly on the hunt for prop-erty, but were also there to get the free specialist advice that lies at the very core of what A Place in the Sun is all about.” His colleague Jasmine Harman, added; “Buying a property abroad is a dream for so many people, and what is great at the show is that everyone who comes along is able to get the advice and ex-pertise to help them make their dreams come true.”

The popularity of the show bodes well for a return of consumer con-

fidence in purchasing property in the region. On their web site alone they feature almost 15,000 properties for sale with show exhibitors hoping for positive growth in the market for 2014. Of last year’s show, Paul Rodwell said

“It was great to see Brits researching living abroad by visiting A

Place in the Sun Live,”

Spain mourns Adolfo SuarezSPAIN IS in mourning for the country’s fi rst ‘post-Franco’ Prime Minister, Adol-fo Suarez, who died of a respiratory infection this week aged 81, having suf-fered with Alzheimer’s for the last ten years. A long-standing friend of King Juan Carlos, Suarez was one of Spain’s most respected politicians, charged with uniting the country’s political fac-tions on the death of General Franco in 1975, winning Spain’s fi rst demo-cratic elections in 1977. Suarez’ son, Adolfo Suarez Illana, praised both his

father’s and the King’s role in the post-Franco period:

“Thanks to the King, he was able to do what

Courts of Justice paper scandal

THE COURTS of Justice in Valencia are being threatened by stationers Charts Tartessos of Andalucia with a paper stop-page. Sources within the company allegedly claim the courts owe around 300,000€ in arrears for stationery supplies and no further deliveries will be made until at least a third of the amount owed has been cleared.

Isolated by copper thievesCOPPER THEFT is now reaching unmanageable levels throughout Spain, forcing police to resort to elaborate alarm systems to alert local constabularies when thefts are taking place. Alarms are not particularly successful as by the time the police arrive the thieves have often made their escape. However, in the absence of any other solution it is all the authorities can do… In the village of El Abdet in the Marina Baixa recently 100 residents were left without telephones for 15 days while Telefonica repaired broken lines due to copper wire theft. So far this month there have been 75 such thefts in the province of Alicante alone. Repairs are prioritised depending on the number of residents left isolated by the interruption in service.

Thomson Majesty visits Cartagena

The Thompson Majesty

ON WEDNESDAY morning Cartagena welcomed almost 1,500 cruise passen-gers and another 620 crew, who helped boost the local economy and tourism market. The Thomson Majesty, former Royal and Norwegian Majesty, was launched in 1992 and the 40,876 grt cruise ship is now sailing for Thom-son Island Cruises. On Wednesday she docked with 1,462 passengers on board.

The Tourists, mostly of British nation-ality, disembarked and headed ashore to visit some of Cartagena’s most emblem-atic landmarks such as the Roman Thea-tre Museum, Archaeological Park and the Pinwheel plus spending time shop-ping in the historic downtown centre.

This is the second cruise ship that ar-rived in March. On March 16th the 18,591 grt Saga Pearl II docked in the city. The cruise season starts in earnest now that spring has arrived and during the month of April fifteen cruise ships will call at Cartagena including the return of the Thomson Maj-esty on April 2nd, Holland America Lines Nordam the following day, HAL’s Eurodam on April 11th, the Oceana April 15th,

April 17th the Wind Star, HAL’s Ryn-dam on the 18th and the return of the Wind Surf on the 24th. For those wish-ing to view the ships in port, Cartage-na’s Cruise Terminal is located in the Marina area, next to the Yacht Club. The dock can cater for vessels up to 300 metres long and a depth of 12.5 metres, with an esplanade of more than 3,000

m2. During 2014 Cartagena will receive more than a hundred cruise ships.

For true cruise ship aficionados, a date for your diary is June 8th when the Island Escape is joined by one of the world’s larg-est cruise ships, the MS Independence of the Seas. The vessel is a Freedom-class cruise ship operated by Royal Caribbean Cruise Line. Launched in April 2008, the 15-deck ship can accommodate 4,370 pas-sengers served by 1,360 crew. At 154,407 gross tons and 1,112 feet (339 mtres) long, she is one of the world’s largest cruise ships and typically cruises at 21.6 knots, 40.0 km/h or 24.9 mph. The Independence of the Seas will return to Cartagena on September 15th and 24th with the cruise year ending on December 5th with the last visit of the 2,016 passenger Oceana.

Continued from front pageAccording to carvajal, “an eviction order was delivered by those responsible for land boundaries who then started to move my furniture and objects from my house and leave them on the beach.” costas did not respond yesterday to calls from the press to give their version of events. on 24th January, carvajal added; “i received a notification that the demolition budget was valued at 18,000 euros but that i could knock down the house myself, if it suited me more.” He then tried to contact the costas but received, “no response.” While ginés carvajal López is the first to suffer, chances are he will not be the last as others are also finding themselves in the same situation and pending demoli-tion, including two more properties in Bolnuevo and a catering establishment. their owners are pleading with the government to try and save their properties.

Sí mi príncipe!THE APPOINTMENT of a Spanish nanny to look after the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge’s baby son, Prince George, is attracting considerable comment in the UK. Maria Teresa Turrion Borrallo has been given a full-time appointment at Kensington Palace where she is to have her own accommodation. Ms Borrallo, who began her new appointment as royal nanny at the end of February, will accompany the Duke and Duchess on their tour of Australia and New Zealand next month, in charge of Prince George while his parents attend public engagements. She is a dedicated Norland College ‘career nanny’, although unlike the average ‘Mary Poppins’ prefers to wear casual clothes rather than the distinctive Norland brown uniform. Ms Borrallo is thought to be the first foreign nanny to look after a future British monarch. Since Ms Borallo began working for the Cambridges it has come to light that she allegedly is still on the Town Hall’s ‘black list’ in her home town of Palencia, despite clearing an IBI bill left in arrears in 2007/8. Palencia council declined to comment.

AVE to Alicante: the dead linkDATA PROVIDED by hoteliers has revealed that 60% of passengers travelling into Alicante via the AVE train service are going on from the city to other tourist destinations, the most popular being Benidorm, Denia, Calpe, Torrevieja and Santa Pola.

Of every 100 people going into Alicante by train, more than 30 do not stay in the capital but travel to other parts of the province via car, taxi, etc., making uncomfortable connec-tions instead of enjoying the convenience of smooth shuttle links to major tourist hubs on the Costa Blanca such as Benidorm and Torrevieja. Benidorm Hotel association Hos-bec has always strongly criticised the decision of Alicante mayor Sonia Castedo to block shuttle connections from the Alicante terminal at the design stage. Hosbec boss Antonio Mayor, upholding that it is vital to provide passengers with reliable links to tourist centres of their choice, said on Tuesday: “It is madness. Something must be done urgently to rec-tify this situation that is a direct result of Castedo’s crazy decision-making.”

POLLEN LEVELS this year are assessed to be the worst in a decade, with Cypress pollen (ornamen-tal hedges) in late January registering almost 2,000 grains per cubic metre: 25 – 30 grains produce symptoms. Experts are also concerned that pollu-tion levels in built up areas aggravate the effects of pollen proteins in chronic sufferers, causing dam-age to the mucosa. Heavily polluted areas have a higher incidence of asthma and allergic diseases.

An internet disgrace!ACCORDING TO a study published today by the European Commission, internet users in Spain in 2013 paid between 40€ and 60€ for monthly broadband services, the second highest in Europe. Cyprus hit the top spot between 46€ and 90€. Lithuania and Romania offers the most competitive prices, between 10€ and 11€. Speaking in Brussels on Tuesday the Vice President of the EC, Neelie Kroes, said: “There is no single ‘internet market’, and that has to change. Nothing justifies that one European has to pay more than four times what another

pays for the same broadband usage.” Other studies showed that in broadband markets in the EU there are virtually no guidelines or coherence. It was noted that 66% of citizens do not know what internet speed they have contracted and that consumers get on average only 75% of the broadband they have hired. The European Parliament is to vote next week on a series of measures proposed by the Commission aimed at rectifying the problem and regulating rights and services for consumers across Europe.

Lib Dems back expat votesCAMPAIGNERS FIGHTING for expats to be represented and have a voice in the House of Commons have found an ally in the Lib-eral Democrats.

The party has adopted as policy recognis-ing the right of all British citizens living in Europe to be represented in UK Government.

Following the party’s York conference, the Lib Dems will “explore the viability” of hav-ing overseas constituencies as already used in other European countries.

And MPs and MEPs are to seek an EU-wide reciprocal agreement to insure all EU citizens who exercise their right of freedom of movement will not fi nd themselves dis-enfranchised.

The party believes this could be achieved through existing models – Austria uses an ‘opt-in’ scheme where citizens wishing to vote in their home country make a declara-tion they wish to do so every 10 years.

In addition those who choose not to have a vote back at home could ‘opt out’ to have a voice in their country of residence. In Spain, for example, expats can only vote in local and European elections.

Margaret Hales, MBE, of the Votes for Ex-pat Brits pressure group, said she was “de-lighted” the Liberal Democrats recognised at Britons abroad “not only have a right to take

part in the democratic processes of Britain but very many of us want to take part.”

DIFFICULTY

She said “unfortunately” there were many diffi culties stacked up against expats – such as the problems of registration, postal delays and disenfranchisement under the 15 years rule – although some were being addressed.

Margaret, who lives in Benitachell, added: “but if one part of the establishment is now going to support us, that’s wonderful. Now we have the diffi cult task of working on Mr Milliband’s merry men!

“I fear that the Conservatives are more con-sumed with immigration and referenda than looking after the rights of their British citizens. But that should not stop us, I beg everyone to write to their MP and tell them we want our vote...email them at the Houses of Parliament! All that can should register to vote.”

Fellow campaigner Brian Cave said Britain was just one of fi ve European countries from 28 which prevented its citizens from having a full democratic voice in their respective na-tional elections. He added: “The only other group of British citizens to be deprived of the vote are prisoners!”

For more information about the campaign go to www.votes-for-expat-brits.com and to register to vote in the UK, visit www.aboutmyvote.com

I FEEL that I must write to warn others. My experience left me weak at the knees thinking about ‘what nearly was’. Tuesday March 4th: a beautiful day and some family members including my young grandson and I decided to have walk along the sea front. I momentarily forgot the common sense rules about safely carrying credit cards and cash.Literally two minutes after arriving at the sea front I was aware of two short, middle-aged women carrying fl owers behind me. Foolishly, I had my shoulder bag round my back and not in front. Talking as one does and totally distracted I noticed an almost imperceptible movement on my bag. I pulled my bag immediately round to the front of me and noticed that the zip was open! I was rooted to the spot and my stomach fell to my shoes and for a few seconds I did not dare to look in my unzipped bag for fear of what I may fi nd or not fi nd. When I summoned up the courage to check on my purse I did fi nd it intact - but my nerves were totally shattered. Of course like an idiot I had everything in it cash, credit cards, driving license, medical card etc. When I turned around to look for the two women with the fl owers they were drifting off into the crowd going the other way. So please be aware of smiling ladies carrying fl owers!Margaret Ash

Beware of ladies with fl owers

ALTHOUGH MOST people are aware of pickpockets in crowded areas on the Costa Blanca I would like to draw your readers’ attention to another crime which targets vulnerable and disabled people.I am wheelchair bound due to an amputation of my leg and rely on my wife to assist me in and out of the car and lift the wheelchair into and out of the boot.On occasions passers-by have offered help to get my leg into the car and have assisted my wife to fold and lift the wheelchair. This has been much appreciated and we have both expressed surprise at how helpful people are in Spain. But now we are very wary and suspicious as on two recent occasions rather than helping us, thieves have helped themselves to my wife’s purse, taking it from a small bag which she wears across her body. These thefts were not noticed until sometime later when we needed cash or a credit card.We are now sadly going to say “Vete!” (Go away!) to any offer of help. So be aware - if you are vulnerable due to a disability, you could be an easy target for the unscrupulous.David Northway, La Nucia

“Vete”!I MUST reply to Frank Colet’s letter RTN 21-27th march concerning motor homes. As a Spanish property owner and motor home owner often parking in the car park beside Mercadona (it is not owned by Mercadona) the toilet cassettes are emptied into a cesspit (the same place Franks No 2 goes). Water we get from a garage where we buy fuel. Groceries and water come from Mercadona or playa Flamenca market, thus putting money into Spanish bank accounts. We own a house on Montegolf and pay

all due charges but prefer to visit other parts of Spain and Europe. France espe-cially is ‘motor home friendly’, often cost-ing nothing or a few euros to park and do other necessities. We have tried camp-sites but fi nd the rules too restricted. We parked at Florentillies, San Miguel with friends. After 5 days were told people had complained (expats with nothing to do but complain) that we did not have our very small dog tied up (she never wandered off our pitch). We had to pay 1.75€ a day for a dog and she was not al-

lowed to be walked around the campsite but had to be exercised off site on a very busy road. We left immediately at a cost off 85€. As for an eyesore most motor homes cost more than Frank’s house. ‘An eyesore’ is the builders rubbish left at our community green bin; the dog poop not picked up by irresponsible owners; and abandoned buildings left unfi nished. He would have something to complain about if he lived in UK near a gypsy site. Instead of moving on motor homes the police should be checking UK-registered cars running around with no tax or MOT.Shirley Snook

Nothing more to do than complain

IN REMEMBRANCE of my mother who sadly passed away Feb 22 in the Esher Hospice for which I thank them for the very great care and attendance they showed to my mother and help they showed to family. Your sincerely A.H.Holt ( Tony ) Eldest son and resident of Torrevieja.

Watts In Britain

By

Paul Watts

In an in-vernal spin over my equinoxes WELL, I hadn’t heard from him in nearly four years - so I thought I was safe - but after last week’s WIB I’ve once again stirred the Brigadier (somewhere in Javea) to put pen to paper; or more accurately keystroke to email. What had I done wrong? What inaccuracies had I let through this time? Apparently, the cause of his current ire was my declaration of spring being March 21st. “This is completely inaccurate Watts,” he groans.

Okay, the longest day is always June 21 and the shortest day is always December 21, is this not so? Therefore, I’ve always reckoned the spring equinox to be March 21 and this is what I declared last week. But this wasn’t the case. Oh no I was a day late because this year the equinox was March 20. “And,” bemoans the Brig, “I wish you popularizing hacks would use the correct name: it’s the vernal equinox.” Hmmm, like many things Brig, sometimes there’s more than one name for an action, object or person. But whichever term you use: spring, vernal or March the fact is the equinox does move about a bit.

My astronomy teaching chum Dave Feintuck told me, “Your correspondent is correct Paul, this year’s equinox was indeed the twentieth but it can occur on any of three days in March.” Dave gave me a brief les-

son on when this is: “The equinox occurs the moment the Sun crosses the celestial equator. That is the imag-inary line in the sky above the Earth’s equator [Dave waves his hand in some middle distant point] from south to north. This happens either on March 19, 20 or 21 every year. And this year it was last Thursday.”

All of which means the Brigadier was right. Over the years I guess I’ve just tied it in with my parent’s wed-ding anniversary on March 21 – and that event, dear Brig, is a fi xed point! Oh well, you learn something everyday. With that in mind and for the delectation of pedants in Javea and beyond here are some salient equinoxal factoids: “The Earth’s axis is always tilted at an angle of about 23.5° in relation to the ecliptic, the imaginary plane created by the Earth’s path around the Sun. How-ever, the tilt’s orientation changes throughout the year. On any other day of the year, the Earth’s axis tilts a little away from or towards the Sun. But on the two equinox-es, the Earth’s axis tilts neither away from nor towards the Sun and is perpendicular to the Sun’s rays…”

Gosh, that’s a lot to take in; I think I prefer to view it with this marvellous new photo that NASA has released. It shows the Earth on the day of the vernal equinox as captured by the GOES-13 satellite operated

by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Adminis-tration (NOAA). It is a tad America-centric, which may upset the Brigadier as Javea is not yet in sight, but non-the-less is a glorious view of our world. And for the further delectation of pedants in Javea and beyond a NASA offi cial reported in the image description: “This full-disk image from NOAA’s GOES-13 satellite was captured at 11:45 UTC (7:45 a.m. EDT) and shows the Americas on March 20, 2014. This date marks the start of astronomical spring in the northern hemisphere.” Well done, Brig you’ve got it right again…

Here’s one fact I won’t get wrong BST starts the day af-ter tomorrow – so, put your clocks forward an hour this Sunday morning. Yup, the lighter evenings are here.

Gastronomic delights with ‘Desayun-Arte - Breakfast-Art’ALONG WITH sand, sea, sports, sun and san-gria, one of Torrevieja’s newest tourism pro-motions is a new range of gastronomic events, building on such events as the successful Ta-pas Route. Their newest initiative was some-thing of a mystery when it came to an expla-nation as to what was exactly going to happen, but was promoted as a sort of breakfast picnic, that is intended to become a monthly event in different parts around the city.

On Sunday, the first Breakfast Art event was organised around the Plaza de Oriente, where more than fifty people from various groups and associations, gathered at the side

of the Church of the Sacred Heart, for the first such breakfast picnic, on this occasion or-ganised by the Departments of Citizenship, Foreigners and Youth.

The activity invites all of Torrevieja’s groups and Associations to take the opportu-nity to share any type of gastronomic initia-tive on a monthly basis.

In essence the idea is to ‘share’ your pic-nic, to possibly arrange a Sunday morning event highlighting typical local choices of food, that one might find if out for brunch in any of Torrevieja’s more than one hundred countries that make up Torrevieja’s diverse population. On Sunday, there was certainly something for everyone: all kinds of meats,

pies, salads, coffee kept warm in thermoses flasks, hot chocolate and candy that was giv-en away at the door the Church.

Definitely the surprise of the morning we took her to get to see Antonio ‘El Torero’ with his guitar and Karim Wasfi on bass, the Director of the Banda Sinfónica de Bagdag, performing a spontaneous open air concert that enthralled one and all with their special

blend of music. Councillors Agustina Esteve and Rosario Martínez attended the event and look forward to building a special following around the city, where residents can mix and mingle and enjoy finding out more about each other’s culture, music and gastronomy. More information about organising you own special Sunday event is available by leaving your details at the Department of Tourism.

Charity Cricket MatchNEXT SATURDAY 5th April, a charity cricket match between Torrevieja CC and La Marina Mean Machine will take place at the Dani Plaza Athletics Track in the Torrevieja sports centre. The Mean Machine is a team of volunteers who raise money for the AECC, and one of their members, Paul (Doc) Docherty initiated a trophy to be contested annually. Torrevieja CC won it last year so the Mean Machine is out for revenge. Sadly, Paul passed away in 2013 but requested that further money raised should go to ‘wish upon a star’, a charity that gives terminally ill children a holiday. The match starts at 10.30am and they hope as many people as possible turn up to support this worthy cause.

Randy Greer ends Jazz FestivalTHE MUSIC of the legendary Nat King Cole was the main attraction for a primarily British audience who packed out Torrevieja’s Palacio de Musica on Sunday night. They came to hear San Francisco born vocalist Randy Greer, whose voice at times bore an uncanny resemblance to that of the celebrated artist. Greer was joined on stage by four equally talented musicians; Enric Peidró on Tenor sax, British pianist Richard Busiakiewicz plus Spanish artists Andres Lizón

on bass and Curro García on drums. The planned concert set lasted almost an hour and a half and was primarily a tribute to the legendary Nat King Cole, featuring a repertoire of some of the biggest hits of his long career including ‘I can’t give you anything but love’, ‘This can’t be love’, ‘Mood Indigo’, ‘Straighten up and fly right’, ‘Sunny Side of the Street’ and ‘Route 66’. The success of the first such festival bodes well for a second and longer cycle in 2015.

Nicola Kuhn Under16 runner-up Valencia

Nicola Kuhn, in white

NICOLA KUHN made headlines again last weekend, losing out in a closely fought final against newly crowned Valencian Champion Marcos Sanz. Although obviously disappoint-ed, the Torrevieja Tennis Club player showed his ever-increasing maturity as a future pro-fessional player, as although he finished run-ner up, he was playing two years above his age category, at Under 16 level.

Nicola is currently training at the Academia Equelite de Juan Carlos Ferrero, under the guidance of former World Number One Juan Carlos himself. Nicola did not a drop a single set on his way to the final with only a couple of points separating the two, as Marcos Sanz won the final only 7:6, 6:4.

Meanwhile in Barcelona. Torrevieja’s la-

dies were also receiving some attention with torrevejense tennis player Eva Guerrero win-ning the qualifying tournament for the Mu-tual Madrid Open U-16 tournament, which was held in the RCT Barcelona. The confident Guerrero winning the final against Marina Olalla seeded number one, by a clear 6:1, 6:1.

The win qualifies Eva to play in the Mutua Madrid Open Under -16 category, which is played at the same time as the 1000 Mutua Madrid professional competition in Madrid next May, 2014. Torrevieja ranks second over-all, after Valencia, in the Provincial Tennis rankings, with at least three or four other jun-ior players also climbing the Spanish national rankings in their age categories and looking to possible professional careers, including Joshua Merino, Jesús Quesada, David Caprot-ta, Andrei Devyatkin and Carlos Guerrero.

What is SEO/BirdLife?SEO/BIRDLIFE is an organisation working for the conservation of birds and their habi-tat. With 12,000 members it is supported by 4,000 volunteer workers and more than 40 local groups with 10 regional offi ces in diff erent parts of Spain, the country’s long-est-standing conservation NGO, this year cel-ebrating its 60th Anniversary.

SEO/BirdLife’s work is based on research; conservation and public awareness. Another ongoing concern is that plans, programmes and policies which have environmental im-pacts are made compatible with conservation.

Illegal activities are consistently report-ed to Spanish courts of law or even straight to the European Commission, especially where the illegal use of poison, poaching or constructions that harm biodiversity are suspected.

SEO/BirdLife runs over 25,000 hectares of reserves, either as outright site-owner or un-der management agreements with councils and private owners. Its work is crucial in the designation of many Special Protection Areas (SPAs) in Spain and is responsible for the identifi cation, listing and monitoring of Important Bird Areas (IBAs).

More than 150,000 people have taken part

in conservation, citizen science, education and communication campaigns, with nearly 50,000 followers on Twitter and Facebook accounts and over half a million hits a year on www.seo.org (choose ‘inglés’ from the ‘Google translate’ option at the top right-hand side of each webpage).

Three events raise money for HELP MMMST. PATRICK’S night was celebrated at Paddy Singh’s bar in Los Urrutias on Sunday 16th March. 49 people supporting HELP MMM attended plus many others, enjoying a meal and entertainment provided by father and son group ‘Austin Friar’.

The band originates from the North of Ire-land and engaged with the very full audience performing many well-known Irish melodies, raising 100€ for the charity. It was also a pro-motion night for Budweiser with two charm-ing ladies distributing gifts to drinkers.

Elaine’s ‘Quiz with a Diff erence’ was held

at Lui’s Lounge in San Javier. Once again it proved a challenge to the participants, rais-ing a further 190€.

On Friday afternoon the HELP MMM charity auction attracted many people to La Zona bar, where Joanne Scott did a mar-vellous job as a bilingual auctioneer. The event raised a total of 585€.

The next event, a Race Night, is at Casa Rufi no in Los Beloneson, 2nd April at 7pm for 7.30p.m. The cost at 10€ includes a meal of chicken, chips, salad, bread and a glass of wine.

Spring clean your paper workSO, HERE we are in Spring! If you live on the Costa Blanca or have spent much of the past few months out here, you will perhaps feel that winter passed us by this year. We could probably count on one hand the number of times we’ve had to reach for the brolly.

NOW, WE have the promise of all the spring and summer to come but aren’t yet wilting under the

intense July and August heat. It’s a time to make decisions and, without putting a damper on it, it’s time to take a fresh look at your

paperwork too.

Many of you are doing just that. We were delighted to play host to so many British residents who attended our recent event, ‘Tax, Tea and Travel’ at La Zenia Hotel last week. Their questions were a timely reminder about just how much confusion there still is surrounding tax and legal issues in Spain and also just how keen the majority of people are to do it right. Not everyone is interested in or able to come to one of our events, so here are a selection of questions that we have found that expats are asking:

I LIVE IN SPAIN FOR SEVEN MONTHS OF THE YEAR – AM I A RESIDENT? Yes, you are, if you live in Spain for more than 183 days a year.

I ONLY DRAW A SMALL PENSION: DO I REALLY NEED TO MAKE A RESIDENT TAX DECLARATION? People are often surprised at the threshold above which residents are required to make an annual resident tax declaration. For example, if you receive one or more pensions from abroad that total more than 11,200€ a year then you are required to make one (other conditions also apply).

IF I HAVE NO TAX TO PAY WHAT’S THE POINT IN MAKING AN ANNUAL DECLARATION?We do recommend that all residents make an annual tax declaration whether or not they have to pay taxes. Doing so makes it easier to show that you are a fiscal resident which is particularly beneficial when it comes to either selling or bequeathing your home. It means that usually, a much lower rate of inheritance tax applies and that you won’t have 3% retained on the sale of your house. WHEN, WHERE AND HOW SHOULD I MAKE A DECLARATION AND IS IT COMPLICATED?The resident annual tax declaration must be made before 30th June every year to take into account the previous year’s income. A good fiscal representative will help you through the process and ensure that it is kept as simple as possible with explanations delivered in your native tongue. The declaration is simple, useful and required in the vast majority of cases. The spring is a good time of year for clearing out the winter woollies (if you needed them in the first place) and clearing up your pending paperwork too.

Pre nuptial agreementsMARRIAGE BETWEEN expatriates with different nationalities in SpainI INTEND to marry my current partner. We are both expatriates (non Spanish) living in Spain, I am British, whilst my partner is not. Could we sign a prenuptial agreement? If so would it be possible to do so now, before getting married? How would we do it?

Though both of you are of different nationality, if you both reside in Spain at the time of the marriage, the law applicable to your marriage should be Spanish Law.Regarding which law would apply, it could be the common and general Spanish Law, ie the Spanish Civil Code and national regulations for marriages, family law, etc., or the foral law, which is the special law of some areas of Spain, which have their own family law, like Cataluña, Comunidad Valenciana ( Alicante, Valencia and Castellon), etc.If in your case the common law applied, (national

common regulation for the whole of Spain less the communities with their own law), then it is possible to grant a prenuptial agreement, ( capitulaciones matrimoniales. These are regulated in the Spanish Civil Code, articles from 1325 to 1355.From these articles and regulations, it must be highlighted that:The prenuptial agreements could be granted and signed before or after the marriage. To be legally valid, the prenuptial agreements must be on a public deed, granted in front of a notary, and these agreements could not be against the law, customary practice or limit the spouse’s right to equality. It must be noted on the marriage registration in the Civil Registry that the prenuptial agreement has been granted if it modifies the marriage’s economic regime. In your question you say you want to grant and sign a prenuptial agreement now, before the marriage.

As per the article 1334 of the Civil Code, you may grant it, but for it to have effect you must be married within 1 year.If you have any query about prenuptial agreement or family law in Spain, we can assist you.You can follow the Spanish Legal Issues that affect you and consult us by following us on facebook: https://www.facebook.com/WhiteBaosAbogadosLawyers

Wincham attends Homes, Gardens & Lifestyle Exhibition CalpeThe Company has recently expanded their operation from offices in the Costa Blanca and Costa del Sol along the coast to include the Costa Calida. During 3rd & 4th april Wincham will be at the home, Gardens and Lifestyle exhibition (stands 4 & 5) located at The Diamante Beach hotel in Calpe, offering new and existing clients the opportunity to discuss their personal circumstances on a one-to-one basis, providing a free of charge Inheritance Tax illustration.

Before contacting Wincham most property owners are either unaware or have been misled about the potential financial burden their beneficiaries may face upon their death. The surviving partner, or beneficiaries, may have a tax bill which exceeds the value of the entire Spanish asset being inherited plus the cost of obtaining probate in more than one country. The Wincham solution to the IHT/ISD problem in Spain is for the owner/s to invest their Spanish

property into a new UK company (which Wincham can supply) where the owners are both the shareholders and directors and remain in complete control of their asset. (There is no 7-10% Property Transfer Tax payable on this transaction). The property then becomes owned within a UK company and as such comes under UK tax law. Any transfers between a husband and wife in the UK are tax exempt. Each individual has an allowance of £325,000 before IHT is payable in the UK and a couple would therefore have a combined allowance of £650,000. The professionals at Wincham in the UK and Spain are on-hand to help clients through this process as smoothly as possible. There are many taxation benefits when investing a property into your own UK Limited Company together with the ability to structure the ownership of the Company to suit Beneficiaries needs in a way that is simply not possible under Spanish law.If you would like to meet with one of our trained Consultants at the exhibition or to be updated on

future Wincham events and to find out more about the implications of Spanish IHT and the legal steps you can take to avoid it please visit www.winchamiht.com and register your details, or telephone a consultant directly in Spain on 0034 96 583 0991 / UK +44 (0)1260 299 700.Wincham International is also able to assist you with Legal, Accountancy, Will Writing and Probate issues in both the UK and Spain.

WINCHAM CONSULTANTS has experienced an increased demand in enquiries from Spanish property owners worrying about the issue of Spanish Inheritance Tax (IHT).

What do the UK pension changes mean for you?

FOR THOSE of you who have already brought annuities nothing changes, everything stays the same.

For those of you with private pensions with effect from 27th March the following rules change: An increase in the maximum amount from a drawdown pension in UK to 150% of

GAD: this increases the amount available (as of March 2014) for a 65 year old from 7.08% p.a. to 8.85% p.a. Reduction in the amount of guaranteed income needed to take advantage of

Flexible Drawdown to £12,000. The trivial commutation limit increased from £18,000 to £30,000. Smaller pension funds can be taken as a lump sum, regardless of triviality limit:

now three funds up to a maximum £10,000 each.A number of the remaining changes are still subject to consultation and indeed legislation in the Finance Act 2015, immediately ahead of the UK General Election – this in itself creates further uncertainty. But the main announcement was that from April 2015 you will be allowed the cash in all of your UK private pension: please note this does not and will not include final salary or government pension and at the moment QROPS. However, what has been glossed over is that if you cash in your pension you will be taxed and this could be as high as 45%. Here is an illustration of the tax consequences of en-cashing a Pension Fund in the UK based on the proposed rules

Pension fund amount

% Tax on total fund

*These figures are based on current tax rates, assume no other UK income and assume that the personal allowance reduces after £100,000

ADDITIONAL NOTES: In section 2.67 of the 2014 UK Budget Report, the intention is stated to remove the

personal allowance from non-residents – unless they can prove close ties with the UK. If only some of the fund is taken from a UK Defined Contribution Scheme (e.g.

a SIPP), the balance will be charged at 55% on death – potentially being reduced, subject to consultation, but unlikely to be below 40% even after this. Final salary and Government pensions will not be able to be cashed in and they

will no longer be allowed to be transferred i.e. to a QROPS.As an expatriate in Spain you have another route. Many of you will have read about QROPS and their benefits. If you have any questions about your private pensions or were considering transferring your Government or Final salary pension out of the UK but had decided to wait, now is the time to act while you still can.If you need independent, impartial advice on your financial future please contact me by email [email protected] or call me on 658 892 330 to arrange a free consultant.

Refreshing rains and a change of planAFTER A day of shopping and investigating gazeboes yesterday I had planned a long session in the garden this morning but during two long early Skype calls it started to pour and continued for a couple of hours. So it has been a catching-up computer day instead. At least the plants have been refreshed and the soil will now be easier to work when planting a few extra summer lilies; planting potatoes and giving the veggie plot a rotovate; sowing alfalfa for the rabbits and extra nutritious leaf for salads; sowing squashes and courgettes plus some summer beans. I have wandered around the garden to collect salad leaves - the only damage from the rain are some bashed down dwarf irises and about-to-open freesias.

BRUSSELS ABOUT TO LEGISLATE ON GARDEN PLANTSOne of the problems with the administration of the European Union is that the tone of most of its initiatives are restrictive rather than giving strategic leadership for resident peoples and individuals. Also as more and more countries have joined the mix of nationalities to be given appointments in each Directorate the selection process becomes more complex, taking into account experiences interests and language abilities up and down the corporate ladders.

Regulations on food growing are soon likely to be infl uenced by crop energy balances and gaseous pollutants. Attempts have recently been made to control seed swaps and according to e Sunday Express, controls on the varieties of fl owering plants we are allowed to have in our gardens from the Arctic Circle of Finland to the Northern shores of the Straits of Gibraltar. UK could be seriously aff ected by the ban on the sale and planting of some varieties of rhododendron and in Spain on lantanas. I asked a university botanist why? e answer was ‘climate change due to global warming they could become evasive and encroach on the habitats of plants that have been naturalised in Spain for a longer time’.Every year I dig up a good number of invasive plants such as olive pine privet and palm saplings, bay and carob bonsais, and wild asparagus and blackberry bushes. But very rarely does a self-seeded lantana bush appear and when they have they have generally been interesting natural crosses of colours. I will keep track of the development of this legislation and update you when I can. It would be interesting to know the percentage of plants in today’s garden centres and gardens that were not in Spain before the exploration and raping of the Caribbean and South America and of the last mini ice age that fi nished in Spain in the mid 1800’s. My

partial analysis suggests that it would be high.

Advanced Glass Protection

AGP HAVE extensive experience in the fi tting of their Glass Protection fi lms having installed their products across the Middle East, Africa and the UK. eir fi lms have been fi tted to Embassies, United Nations, Government and large corporate buildings, protecting people and property behind glass from the eff ects of the sun to protection from shattering glass in an explosion. However, Tim Dean, the Managing Director of AGP, who has lived in Spain before and always wanted to return, has identifi ed through his research a huge market in Spain for the supply and installation of a combined solar, security and safety fi lm. Tim says, “I was extremely surprised when I realised that there isn’t a company pro-actively marketing this product in Spain. In a hot country like Spain the sun can cause problems through glass, creating excessive heat and glare, and because of that heat we either live behind blinds or spend small fortunes on keeping our homes or offi ces cool. None of us want to live and work in a concrete box or a dark environment so glass is important in our homes and offi ces, a large part of modern buildings’ design.”Tim went on to say: “Living and working behind glass is what we all do but with glass there can be problems. It is the weakest point of entry for a potential intruder and it can cause serious injury when broken or shattered. Our combined Solar, Security and Safety Film will eliminate all these problems. e anti-shatter element of the combined fi lm will help to prevent injuries in the event of breakage or shattering glass and will stop an opportunist thief from gaining access to the property.”All AGP fi lms also stop 99% of UV (Ultra Violet) light. It is Ultra Violet light that causes furniture, carpets, artwork and wooden fl ooring etc. to fade and discolour. You will be surprised at how little it will cost! Call AGP today. Tel: 96 677 5028 / 606 799 035, email: [email protected] or visit www.agpspain.com

AGP SL (Advanced Glass protection) have launched their company in Spain. They are specialists in the supply and installation of Solar, Security, Safety, Privacy and Designed glass fi lms.

travelEaster Break: Seven nights in sun-drenched Tenerife

THE ISLAND is lesser known for its rich cultural heritage yet it has a fascinating history and its own unique character. And there is plenty to see and do in addition to slaving over a hot sun-bed!

The Museo de la Naturaleza y el Hombre is a former hospital adapted as a natural history museum and now one of the city’s more

popular attractions. Or start at the Plaza Constitución and spend the day exploring the Old Town. The Pico del Teide cable car affords fantastic views on a clear day of the 3718m Mount Teide (a little pricey at 38€ and 25€ for under 14s but well worth it).

A spectacular volcanic landscape provides an impressive backdrop for the music and culture of this beautiful Canary Islands paradise, in addition to an amazing 70km of gorgeous sandy beaches – a perfect sunshine escape.

Hotels.tv have organised a 7-night Easter break at the fabulous 4-Star Hotel Catalonia del Rey. Priced at only 161€ per person, bed and breakfast is included.

Call the reservations hotline on 865 674 036. But be quick as there are only a limited number of rooms available at this price!

TENERIFE IS one of the world’s most popular holiday destinations thanks to its beautiful climate, sun-drenched beaches and hot night-life.

Seven days in May in Galicia DAY ONE

Travel to Salamanca in the north-west, known as Spain’s ‘golden city’, home to Europe’s oldest university and the haven of architects, sculptors and craftsmen throughout its 2000-year history.

Salamanca has its very own ‘Plaza Mayor’ in the heart of the city, a favourite with visitors, full of atmosphere where the locals, students and tourists overflow the cafes and shops.

DAY TWO Move on to Galicia’s capital, Santiago,

city of the shrine of St James and one of the world’s most beautiful cathedrals. This is the destination of pilgrims to the shrine who walk the ‘Way of St James’ – a distance covering the whole of the north coast of Spain. However, pilgrims may obtain a certificate form the cathedral if they brave the last 100km on foot or 200km on a bicycle.Stay in an excellent 3-4 Star Hotel in the city and see the sights with a helpful official guide included in the price.

DAY THREETravel to the beautiful coastal city of

La Coruña, full of bustling shops and ancient legends, before going on to Las Rias Bajas further down the coast for…

DAY FOUR AND FIVEStunning coastal views, top

entertainment within the city and plenty to see and do before travelling to Cambados and La Toja. Cambados is famous for its wine and noble palaces. La Toja is a small island linked to the península by a bridge. The hotels spa facilities in the área are wonderful and the gardens outstanding.

La Toja also features the 12th Century hermitage of San Caralampio, completely encrusted with the symbol of the Santiago de Compostela pilgrimage – scallop shells!

DAY SIXFrom Rias Bajas we go on to Toledo,

just 70km south of Madrid, known as the ‘Imperial City’ - the court of Charles I. The historical centre of the three main religions – Christians, Muslims and Jews – the Alcázar dominates one side of the city and the Cathedral the other.

Winding, narrow, cobbled streets

(sometimes they lead nowhere…) and ancient buildings are all contained within the city walls. A fascinating glimpse into Spain’s ancient past.

DAY SEVENTravelling south around two

hours from Madrid are the sights everyone comes to Spain to see in Consuegra – those iconic windmills made famous by Don Quixote and the ‘Man of La Mancha’. 11 of the 13 windmills still survive.

Return to the Costa Blanca.

Seven days from 21st May: Half Board: 540€ includes the oficial guide in Santiago. Don’t miss this opportunity to tilt windmills! Call Gandia Tours on 966 106 872 for more information.

Celebrity ClipsLAST WEEK 20th Century Fox announced

that kite-flying Charlie Brown and his lovable dog Snoopy will soon be

seen plastered on merchandise ranging from lunchboxes to soft toys. Originally launched as a comic strip

in 1950 by Charles Schulz, Peanuts ran until 2000, and by the time the movie comes out in 2015, a franchise could see it go-ing on forever.

Michelle Keegan could well be in a small state of panic as she has just 4

weeks before she shoots her final scenes in Corrie. This is because she´s been sunning herself in Dubai and has a tan there´s no way she could get in Salford. “I was only away for a week and wore the highest fac-tor sunscreen to protect my skin, but I just tan so easily,” she said.

A teddy bear dressed up as Christian Grey complete with a mask and hand-cuffs has gone on sale at £53.99. An at-tached message reads “He’s more than 50 shades of fun, and you can’t help but submit to loving him.” Footnote on the subject: Oprah Winfrey has declared “I’ve

read the book and I just hope the movie is filthier!” Shame on you woman!

Top news for all you fans of The Inbetweeners, as their follow up movie will go on general re-lease on August 1st. The news was warmly welcomed across Twitter, with ‘Inbetweeners 2′ becoming a hot trending topic and reactions ranging from ‘this has made my day’ to ‘so excited about this!!’If you have never seen The Inbetweeners then treat yourself … you´ll love it!

What a good Neighbour Kylie has turned out to be!KYLIE MINOGUE was born in Melbourne in 1968, and at an almighty 5 feet tall had to have her chair on The Voice specially modified to make her a similar height to the other judges, but when it comes to stature, Kylie is head and shoulders above the other three guys.

She was interviewed by online newspaper Metro last week and revealed quite a bit about both her professional and private life. It all started for her way back in 1986 when she was cast as Charlene Mitchell, a schoolgirl come garage mechanic in Neighbours, and although it was all a bit tame, it kick-started her singing career. She sadly recorded all sorts of sugar coated pop, but there was always something about her that kept her in the limelight. Then her singing career took a massive nosedive at the tail end of the 90´s, but back she came with 3 x No1´s in the early 2000´s.

She started her interview with Metro talking about wanting to

resurrect her life in front of the camera saying “I love being on set, it was my first job, and I love the opportunity to not be ´Kylie, to be someone else,” adding, “at the moment it’s parked, but it’s something I’ll always have a little pilot light for,’ aah bless. She also admitted to having a quiet social life and said how Scissor Sisters singer Jake Spears used to buy two tickets to a movie and hustle her into going with him, calling him her ´naughty brother.´

All of that said, it’s her final revelation that I found the most amazing. Bringing in her time on ´The Voice´ Kylie admitted “I’m normally more reactive, or I go with the flow, I don’t like decisions!” and topping off that rather bizarre statement by adding “which is quite odd now I’m on The Voice which is decisions all day long, but I like to kind of feel my way.”Don’t you go worrying Kylie … you’re doing just fine hun!

Velocity Racing

Velocity Racing provided 2 formulas on the night, Rookie and lightning rods. Having had the winter months to prepare there was a range of new cars. With fresh tyres and throttles hard to the floor the 1st race for the rookies got off to a flying start. Proceedings were brought to a halt when last year’s champion caroline capel’s race came to an early with a spectacular crash through the tyre wall. With the race reset, debutant Jaz lawrence went on to win.

the lighting rods first race also lacked nothing in excitement as the team from la Marina Services lost control in the home straight causing mayhem for the chasing pack as they took efforts to avoid the spinning car. nick Kelly, current lightning Rod champion went on to win. With a total of 11 races, all went home thoroughly satisfied.

next meeting on Saturday 12th april. For more info go to www.velocityracing.eu

Mobile: 686 361 594 / Tel: 965 878 424 horoscopesVenus trines with your planetary leader Mars midweek. They say all is fair in love and war, but you would be the very first to say that you are currently unsure about a relationship, since issues are affecting your judgments right now. Put your cards on the table and make it known that, above and despite all, you are not to be messed with.

Kenny’s Postbag Email your letters to me at: [email protected]

KENNY, I want to come and make an appointment to see you, but I am so nervous, and feel that my ex husband may want to make contact with me.Carol T.

Carol, I am fully aware that it is fear that stops people making appointments. Fear makes everything worse than it is, it is true, but I would need to work with you to make contact with the other side. If your ex came through then, since you are in charge of the sitting, he would be sent on his way, and I would see to that. It would seem that he hurt you and he cannot do that anymore, I promise you! The door to my office is your way of escape if you need to walk out, but in fifty three years nobody has had to do it! Meanwhile those who want to contact you can’t.

Recent actions with Mercury have allowed you to have your say whilst reaching the best audience, and with good effect. It is hard to believe that it is often your low esteem that halts progress in its tracks and the support you crave is often letting you down in this process of creativity and expertise. You must now fully know what you can do.

Consolidator of the Universe and champion of the truth you are beginning to fit all the pieces together at long last. The emphasis is on skills and abilities right now, and you can rest assured that you are capable of making the changes that are revealed by your practicalities. It is clear you are more, much more that you think that you are!

If it’s your birthday this weekIf at first you don’t succeed then don’t forget that you have the ambition and skills to make things a lot better all around. The Cosmos rewards those who help themselves!

Consider what you have right now, and this is brought about by the wisdom and grace of Saturn in actions with Venus. Love comes on all levels, and the Goddess of Love takes time to consolidate and treasure that which you have worked so very hard for. If, just lately, it’s been an uphill struggle you will see that you now get what you need.

Actions with the Sun and Jupiter are sent to clear you a way forward, with some healthy rest and relaxation hopefully on the cards, since you need to chill. Just lately you have been having to fight your corner, but now that things are so very different and others have taken a new direction, you are mercifully free for peace and rest.

Mars and Pluto share responsibility for your well being as your invincible planetary leaders. This week sees Mercury take on Pluto to enable communication, and Venus trines with an unruly Mars to balance the negative but inspiring energies within you right now. The end result is just to show you what your options really are right now.

Look to your opposing sign of Aries to see that love and passion are on the cards, whilst your amorous planetary leader, Venus, takes on wily Saturn to boot. Balance demands that there be compromise, but this should be tossed aside if love is to enter, and so make this your current priority, you will never have to look back again.

Mercury directs you in matters of learning and achievement since you find yourself on the threshold of new horizons. A project beckons and your expertise is sought to make it happen. You are ready and waiting for the opportunity to show what you can do, and it would seem that this is nearer, much nearer, than you think it is.

Two mighty actions with your magnanimous planetary leader, the Sun, bring about some favourable opportunities and set you on your pathway. Squaring with Jupiter brings luck and fortune into the frame, whilst a conjunction with Uranus sees you finally looking beyond your current situation to pastures green and new.

Positive charges are felt by the profundity of the New Moon at the end of the month. Power in your hands is an inspiration, and nothing will make you feel better than to be able to use` this in an enlightening and challenging way. It isn’t selfish to think for yourself for a change, but doing things your way will bring things to a head quite nicely!

The New Moon is approaching, and it is time to nip something in the bud before someone gets hurt. You will feel that you do not want to be involved, but walking away now when there is unfinished business is not your style, nor will it bring about the changes that you are fully aware are necessary. Take this in your stride and all will be well.

Venus interacts with Saturn and Mars linking specific actions, which are vital, with the source of power which is fundamental to your wants and needs right now. Your generosity and forward thinking have done much to maintain some composure in a matter that begs to veer out of control. Err on the side of caution, but be fully aware.

OLD WIVES’ tales and superstitions have some foundation and can circumnavigate both the truth and the reality that we are experiencing today. I cringe when two bad things happen and people bring on the third by saying that bad things come in threes. I quickly get in a, “bless you” whenever somebody sneezes, because it was a blessing that comes from the Great Plague. I love black cats and I often fly on Friday the 13th and walk under ladders. I am maybe a contradiction, but some things we do believe in, and our suspicions may be the solution to doing anything that just doesn’t feel right.

Luck comes our way when it can, but I can never understand those who buy a lottery ticket and then say that they are not going to win. Or those who give up on something that they really haven’t really tried, or given much attention or effort to. Magic can happen, but you have to allow for it, and it demands an open positive energy if it

is to work for us. When all seems to be going well we say that we are on a lucky streak, but maybe too we see how long that luck can last, and this could put the mockers on the whole she boodle! Have faith, ask for what you deserve and wait and see what happens. You can plan tomorrow and everything goes wrong…fail to plan a thing and just everything fits into place. The bread and jam slice will always hit the floor jam down too…but only if you believe it will.

Whatever you do please be careful in what you ask for. When I first came to Spain in the 1980s it was hard to get a telephone installed and there were no mobiles. My dear Father always liked to be able to call me and in his frustration one day said I would never have a telephone in my house while he was alive! How right he was. It was a neighbour who took the call and told me of his demise one day. Later that morning Telefonica sent an installation engineer and by midday my two year wait was over and a telephone was in pride of place. Sorry Dad!

Very supersticious

How we hear THE EAR consists of three main parts and performs a vital function in receiving and interpreting sound.

A Outer earB Middle ear C Inner ear

The Outer Ear collects sound vibrations in the concha (5)

and passes them along the ear canal (6). The sound vibrates the ear drum (22) which in turn moves the tiny bones (14, 10 and18) in the Middle ear. This movement transmits vibration to the cochlea (4) in the Inner Ear where they are received by fragile microscopic hair cells that covert vibration into nerve impulses for onward transmission by auditory nerve to the brain for recognition.

It is very important as human beings to use our sense of hearing. Losing the sense of hearing can completely change a person’s way of living. We should be properly educated in how to care for our sense of hearing by knowing how it works and preventing common causes of hearing loss.

The ear consists of three main parts and each performs

a vital function in receiving and interpreting sound and it is very important that they function together perfectly. Permanent hearing loss can occur once any of these parts encounters a problem.

For example, the hair cells in the Inner Ear are fragile and

some die as a function of disease, head injury, medications, exposure to noise and age. These conditions cannot be medically or surgically corrected and the best treatment for hearing loss from damage to the hair cells or auditory nerve is, in the majority of cases, hearing aids.

Basic Spanish for everyday needs by Jane Cronin spanish

Adjectival agreementLAST WEEK we talked about the gender of nouns and how the articles (“a” and “the”) and adjectives (describing words) change their endings to match the gender of the nouns.

Now we’ve got those basic principles established we can start looking a bit more closely at adjectives and how they change. This is really very simple. Last lesson we looked at the word for “small”, that is pequeño and we saw how it changes in four ways – pequeño, pequeña, pequeños, pequeñas, equivalent to masculine and feminine singular, masculine and feminine plural. The root form which you will find in a dictionary is the masculine singular pequeño.

All adjectives that end in “o” in their masculine singular form change in exactly the same way. There are thousand of them. Here are a few that we can use to describe people: alto “tall”, bajo “short”, gordo “fat”, delgado “thin”, tímido “shy”, simpático “nice”, guapo “handsome”, feo “ugly”, viejo “old”. In each case they will have the four changes I have mentioned, so for example:

El hombre guapo - the handsome man Los hombres guapos - the handsome menLa mujer guapa – the pretty womanLas mujeres guapas – the pretty women

Notice that in the case of the word guapo we have a different translation in English for male and female: male - handsome (or as my daughters would say - cute), and female - pretty. For most of the other words however the translations would be the same – “nice man” “nice woman” etc.

Exactly the same principle works for adjectives that

describe things (remember, things are the same as people in Spanish, with either masculine or feminine gender). So, for example, we could have the word “long” which is largo used to describe an object.

Un palo largo - a long stickUna cortina larga – a long curtain

Now as I have said, in each of these cases, the basic adjective ends in the letter “o”. However, adjectives can end in almost any letter – so what do we do with all the others? (I hear you ask). Well, let’s look at a few random examples:

Azul - blue, grande – big, joven – young, feliz – happy

Adjectives such as those above that do not end in “o” can only change from singular to plural: they cannot make any change to differentiate them between masculine and feminine. Therefore we have:

El libro azul - the blue book La mesa azul – the blue tableEl zapato grande – the big shoe La camisa grande – the big shirtEl hombre joven – the young man La mujer joven – the young womanEl niño feliz - the happy boy La niña feliz – the happy girl

However, in the plural, these adjectives add “s” or “es”

in exactly the same way as nouns do. Here are the same phrases again in the plural.

Los libros azules - the blue books Las mesas azules – the blue tablesLos zapatos grandes – the big shoesLas camisas grandes – the big shirtsLos hombres jóvenes – the young men Las mujeres jóvenes – the young womenLos niños felices - the happy boys Las niñas felices – the happy girls

We can notice two different things here. Firstly look at the adjectives in both sets of phrases and you will see that in each case there are only two possible forms - singular and plural. Secondly, if you compare the two languages in all of these examples, you will see that every single word changes in Spanish (article, noun, adjective), whereas in English we only change one word - the noun – which changes into a plural word.

In real life, when we are speaking Spanish in real situations, it is very difficult to get these right, but in the words of Corporal Jones, “Whatever you do – don’t panic!” The Spanish are used to foreigners getting these endings mixed up. For our Anglo-Saxon brains it’s just too much to remember changing all those fiddly endings all the time. Our learning goes in stages, understanding first before we can speak correctly, so your only task at this stage is simply to pay attention to these differences – understand what is going on and notice it as you listen to the Spanish around you, on the radio and television, on “Youtube”, or anywhere else you get the chance to hear it.

The pitfalls of Plus Size shoppingLEARN THE trade secrets at our Curvy Lady Fashion Show, Saturday 5th April Instore. When you are a plus size, anything from a size 16, clothes shopping can be a nightmare. It does not stop with ‘does it fit me?’ - it also has to incorporate ‘does it hide my fat bits; does it accentuate my slim bits; is it long enough; does it have sleeves and does my bum look big in it?’

Within Looking Good Boutique we have always had a dedicated Plus Size Department and I have learned a lot listening to my customers. elegance, style and fashion are not exclusive to small people: larger ladies also want to be stylish; they do not have to put up with over-sized tents, bright and garish patterns and fabrics that do not flatter.

Larger ladies want to look sexy and be able to feel confident in what they are wearing - taking a size 12 garment and increasing the size does not work! Learning a few golden rules when it

comes to enhancing your shape can be really useful.

Among some great plus size suppliers that understand their market is a small German family company called Chalou. Looking Good Boutique is their only stockist in this area for the best in current collections, including amazing Capri Pants and Bermudas in fantastic stretch fabrics - and an elasticated waist in sizes from 14/40 to 28/54.

Joseph Ribkoff also has amazing plus sizes available: see them in the boutique up to size 22/48 – elegant and stylish, in stretch fabrics that shape rather than cling, ranging from shaper trousers to elegant evening tops.

French designer Didier Parakian has a collection called ‘Anathea’ for ladies size 26/52 still retaining French chic in beautiful fabrics. And Pause Cafe has a younger, more on trend collection with

multi layering and great fabric mixes.

Making good choices and investing in some ‘must-have’ basics provides a wardrobe that makes you feel as confident and feminine as all women should.

Learn to love your curves and embrace your shape to look amazing every day.

DEAR AUNTY: I have just read your article in a recent RTN re Kindle downloads. I have had a Kindle book reader in Spain since they first came out. You might want to forward this onto Mary who asked you about how to purchase Books in English from Amazon. As you suggested I used to download books from Amazon.com or co.uk but now I only use Amazon.es as there are thousands of books listed in English on the Amazon.es site. If you know the Author or book title that you are looking for you can ‘search’ either the Author’s name or the book title: you do not need to enter both into the ‘search’. The book that you are looking for may be listed in several languages, including English, but it is usually there. Alternatively, look on the Amazon.es website under ‘books’, then ‘libros en idiomas extranjeros’ and you will find thousands of books in English. If you search using your Kindle itself, all the books listed will be e-books. If you search the Amazon site on your PC or laptop you will find hard copy books and e-books sometimes together. In the past I have twice emailed Amazon about listing particular books that I could not find on the site. They are more than happy to ask the author if they wish to list it as an e-book and on one occasion the author did list the book, it only took a few days, and on the other occasion the author already had an agreement in place that did not include listing it in the Amazon.es site and would not have it added. Regards, Ken.

Aunty says: Thanks for the information. I am sure readers will find that useful.

Kindle downloads

DEAR AUNTY VIRUS: I have a laptop running on Vista business and use Yahoo Mail. When I receive an email with a .doc attachment when I click on this it generates a preview showing the document but will either not print at all or just print the first page on top of the background of the email. If I try to download it comes up with ‘The screen view and track your downloads’ screen and this gives the document title and says ‘open’ or ‘save’. When I click either of these nothing happens. I have looked in my Documents file but nothing has actually saved. I know it may sound

very strange but can you help? Regards, Joyce.

Aunty says: A ‘.doc’ is a Microsoft Word document. If you do not have MS Word installed on your PC it may not open. Some internet browsers will support ‘.doc’ files, but you have not said which internet browser you are using. But you can download a ‘Word Viewer’ which allows you to open, view and print these documents.http://www.microsoft.com/en-gb/download/details.aspx?id=4

Reply: Thanks for the information, I will try it.

DEAR AUNTY: Further to your advice to Mary regarding Kin-dle downloads, perhaps this information might prove useful. At Christmas I bought my partner a new Kindle Fire HD as a replace-ment for her original Kindle. It was bought from Amazon.es using a Spanish Amazon account, though a British debit card domiciled in the UK. The unit was subsequently delivered from Germany, (not important) though set up in Spanish. What we have found is that after we added the term ‘en Ingles’ after any book that we were specifically looking for, Amazon seems to have got ‘the drop’ on the fact that we are only in-terested in books published in English and any advertising they choose to send by email is purely concerned with this. Thus far we have bought many books including authors like Ken Follet, James Thurber and 12 Years a Slave by Solomon Northup... all English versions. Hope this assists, Steve.

the lights come on automatically at dusk and turn off at dawn (or after up to 10 hours use whichever is first) and are designed for year round outdoor use. the Leds emit a soft blue light that is surprisingly bright, yet not intrusive. they can be set to either light continuously or twinkle via a switch on the back of the solar panel, whichever you prefer!

Be careful though – there is also another switch which turns them off completely and it is easy to accidentally switch this to the ‘off’ position when siting the solar panel if you´re not careful… I did with the review set! Figured out what I´d done

pretty quickly though, so watch out for that one – they´re not faulty, just off. this is there so that you can allow the lights to re-charge fully if the day has not been bright enough to fully charge them.

the Blingstring Outdoor Solar Fairy Lights rely totally on the power of the sun. during the day the sun´s rays are absorbed by the panel and charge the rechargeable AA batteries fitted inside the unit. the AA batteries should be good for several years use are easily replaceable and available widely. It´s also interesting to note that Blingstrings use the same amount of power as a tV remote control and are completely safe and durable for outside use.

they are perfect for use on trees, shrubs, plant pots, decking, porches, pergolas and garden umbrellas – in fact almost anywhere!

The Inspectors Verdict: What could be better? the Blingstring Outdoor Solar Fairy Lights with 120 Led Bulbs need nothing more than the sun to work – and boy, do we have enough of that, and it´s free too!

Please note the following is for information and is not intended as an advertisement - visit www.gadget-hound.co.uk/blingstring-outdoor-solar-fairy-lights to purchase the Blingstring Outdoor Solar Fairy Lights with 120 LED Bulbs for 24€. Price quoted includes delivery to Spain and is subject to availability. euro cost subject to exchange rate at time of purchase.

THIS WEEK the Inspector shines a light on those perennial garden favourites, solar lights.

Focus on GolfPowered by Campbell Lamont Golf, partnered by BayRadio

Head 2 HeadCampbell - We have our first winner of our RTN competition.Tony M - Yes and I am looking forward to our round at La Sella with Rob Spray and his partner.Campbell - Yes except . . . . Tony M - Except what?Campbell - Well we did say it was going to be a pairs competition.Tony M - Yes. I can’t see anything wrong with that so far.Campbell - Well it’s just that you got me but I’ve only got you.Tony M - Why do I never have a 3 wood handy when I need one?

Does your swing cause a bad back? Or does your back cause a bad swing?

by Tony MylesI HAVE discovered, as many of you will have, that the correct start to a good game of golf is not necessarily the opening shot down the first fairway.

It actually starts several minutes before your backswing and it can mean the difference between a memorable round and one that you would prefer to forget.

WARM UP We are all aware that professionals will spend hours

each day on the practice ground and we have seen them in advance of each major round spending a significant amount of time just warming up each part of their anatomy. Most of them employ professional masseurs to ensure that there are no torn muscles and sprains following the first drive. So having a quick swish with your driver may not be sufficient.

Whilst the chance of winning two Euros is marginally less important than winning a Major the risk of injury is probably greater. And so what can we do about it?

KEEP IT SIMPLE!Every golf magazine has at sometime produced a guide

to effective warming-up exercises and like most golfers I have taken heed of some of their advice and employed some of the exercises some of the times. What I need is a simple routine that takes less than ten minutes and can be done whilst waiting for my turn to tee-off. Not much to ask for is it?

The problem with many such routines is that they are best employed whilst lying down on an exercise mat and it is a fair bet that rolling your mat out and squatting in front of the club house will probably do your reputation no good whatsoever and the chances of finding people to play with you will equally diminish.

So what I need is probably something midway between a

quick swish with my driver and a full yoga routine. I think I may have found it!

EASY AND BENEFICIAL Campbell Lamont plays off a very low handicap and hits

the ball an unreasonable distance and so I am prepared to give credibility to what he has to say on this subject. The good news is that it is very easy. Needs no special equipment. And you won’t get funny looks from your colleagues - well no more than usual.

Campbell employs a ball retriever. Most of us have one in our bags, and if not we can probably borrow one.

Extend this to about six feet and place it across your shoulder blades. Then extend your arms underneath and grasp the pole from behind. Now swing fully right and left. Taking each swing to a comfortable distance. If you repeat this for five or ten minutes you will feel the added flexibility in your hips. You will also retain a muscle memory that is rhythmic and smooth and as a result your initial tee shot will stand a much better chance of staying on course.

Was this useful? Do you have a specific routine that works? Would you like to share it? In which case drop me an email to [email protected].

FOR MANY amateur golfers the fi rst bit of exercise they get before a round of golf is when they bend down to place a tee in the ground. This is frequently accompanied by a groan and a slow rise whilst holding the lower back.

Volvo V40 D3 R-DesignLASER RADAR: It sounds like something from a sci-fi thriller but we’re actually talking about technology fitted to Volvo cars, those traditionally staid and dull vehicles, favoured by the ‘flat cap brigade’.

Today’s hip and trendy Volvos are anything but and are packed with sophisticated technology that keeps the brand at the forefront of car design and manufacture. Its laser radar systems are a key ingredient.

I’m testing the V40 D3 R-Design, a performance five door hatchback. And it’s fitted with an intelligent yet simple to operate cruise control. As you might expect this keeps the car travelling at the desired speed but unlike most systems it also measures the distance of the car in front.

This ensures that it keeps the Volvo at a safe distance behind. It does this by automatically braking and accelerating thanks to the information relayed by its clever laser radar. This distance can be changed from reasonably close to quite far away depending on driving conditions.

In theory this is a valuable tool that should mean that the driver can relax. Not so though. My test takes place in torrential downpours and high winds and I discover that the radar is not infallible. This becomes particularly noticeable while at 70mph round a bend on a dual carriageway. The Volvo is in the outside lane but on approaching the bend there is a car on the inside and the radar picks this up and brakes abruptly despite there

being no cars in front of me. This annoys me and I cancel the function.

On another occasion we are on a straight road and

high winds cause a

flashing red warning bar on the driver’s side of the dashboard to light up – accompanied by a really loud beep - for absolutely no reason whatsoever. My sleeping children wake up. High side winds seem to completely throw the radar and despite there being no traffic in front the Volvo brakes sharply from 70mph to 50mph.

That said this cruise control is quite impressive when you bear in mind that it can be set at say 50mph and if a sharp incline appears the resulting gear change does not cancel out the cruise control. Often this is the case in many other vehicles.

Another safety feature is the Blind Spot Information System. There’s a little light on the inside of the wing mirror that glows red whenever a vehicle appears in the blind spot. This is useful because the design is prone to blind spots especially at the rear making it a little awkward to reverse but there are helpful sensors fitted that bleep to alert the driver of nearby obstacles.
