The Work Programme addresses the entire set of issues through 4 inter-linked elements:
• Advanced vehicle/vessel and infrastructure concepts• Standardised design and manufacturing systems• An Integrated Transport System aiming to:
– promote modal shift to cleaner and safer transport
means– increase safety and capacity of infrastructure
• A collaborative research system assured by the
European Research Area (ERA)

Objectives:Maintain or even improve the quality and efficiency of
transport mobilityPut on course the transition towards an environmentally caring
transport system based on renewable fuels (20% fuel substitution by 2020)
Focus:To smooth the transition from present situation towards an eco-

– Critical to reduce CO2 emissions by reducing quantity of fossil fuel consumed per km by heavy duty road vehicles
• Objective– Reduce gaseous & particulate pollutants to “near-zero” levels
• Scope– Research on clean & efficient advanced diesels– Develop optimised combustion system based on Natural Gas
• Expected Outcome– Engine demonstrators integrating most promising technologies,
advanced combustion modes & control strategies

• Justification– Potential of high efficiency fuel cells in transport is very promising
• Objective– Develop & demonstrate cleanliness & efficiency of new drive-line based on
fuel cell system for >200kW, η>60%
• Scope– Basic research on fuel cell & possible materials, modelling & design,
development of high η fuel cell & auxiliaries, after-treatment, power electronics, integration of sub-system/components, advanced energy management, bench testing to demonstrate potential

– Ensure rail traffic growth (2 x pass, 3 x freight) within noise legislative limits

emissions, helps engine downsizing & hybrid vehicles
• Objective– Reduce body in white by 50% without compromising customer &
societal standards for vehicle performance
• Scope– Consider structural design by holistic multi-parameter optimisation
minimising weight & manufacturing cost for high volume applications
• Expected Outcome– Optimised designs in several vehicle classes of different
production volumes– Demonstrator with reductions in curb weight 30-50%, raw material
consumption 30%

Risk based ship design and approval IP Maritime
• Justification– Recent maritime disasters with high human & environmental
consequences require a new approach to ship design
• Objective– Improve safety standards to attain optimal solutions through links
in risk analysis, 1st principles analysis & design
• Scope– Focus on strategies& technologies - new ship designs, operational
procedures, risk-based regulations– Develop a systematic, all-embracing approach to ship safety
• Expected Outcome– Analysis of all factors relating to safety at sea; development of risk-
based frameworks;integrated design environments;
modelling/optimisation of ship operations to improve safety; derivation of risk-based rules

IP Maritime• Justification– Replacement of expensive and lengthy sub-scale experimental
testing by cheap and fast CFD simulation techniques
• Objective– Complete numerical modelling & simulation of ship behaviour at
full scale & in real sea conditions
• Scope– Ensure systematic use of hydrodynamic analysis throughout the
design process– Emphasis on integration of sea-keeping, stability & resistance
• Expected Outcome– Integrated modelling & simulation for hydrodynamic design– Software integration of hull form definition, performance analysis,
multi-criteria optimisation

Next generation of rail guided passenger urban transport
IP Rail• Justification
– 70% journeys in cities; public transport must be made more affordable if it is to be established or regenerated
• Objective– Development of innovative modules for light rail/metro/trams
harmonising key sub-systems & their interfaces
• Scope– Focus on hybrid materials, component fatigue, interdependence of
key systems
• Expected Outcome– Innovative concepts & potentially industrialised components to
facilitate modularisation of urban rail systems to ensure affordability

• Justification– To ensure European competitiveness at a time of over-capacity
• Objective– Integrate methods & decision making techniques for conceptual design – Explore new markets & develop new cost-effective ship concepts
• Scope– shift to multi-criteria decision making techniques for “right 1st time”
design– guarantee reliability of design process & its results
• Expected Outcome– Structuring European conceptual design capability of shipbuilding
innovation chain to create new partnerships – Definition of common data bases and methodologies for conceptual
design– Application of the results to the conceptual design of examples of
new ship types.
