Moving Ahead in Challenging Times

The RSPO, during its short but productive existence, has faced up

to and provided solutions to criticisms from a global spectrum of

stakeholders. Like many other organizations, RSPO has not been

spared the ripples from the global financial meltdown, with main

concerns about the relevance of more costly certified palm oil in

already cash-strapped markets.

2009 has been a year of growth and consolidation - 34 operating

units from 11 companies certified with a production capacity of

~1.75 million tonnes of sustainable palm oil. The Principles & Criteria

and their assessment methodologies have been further refined.

RSPO is addressing a host of topics from High Conservation Value

areas and New Planting guidelines to Greenhouse Gas emissions,

compensation schemes and habitat rehabilitation. The call at RT5

in 2007 for smallholder engagement has been heard and is being

addressed.

Notwithstanding past challenges, RSPO will continue to commit to

the principles of integrity and transparency, and engagement with all

stakeholders in achieving sustainability in agricultural practice.

Call for Exhibitors

As with previous Roundtable Conferences, the organisers have included an exhibition for Trade & Industry, Research Institutions and Government

and Non-Government Organisations & agencies. This exhibition will provide an excellent platform for stakeholders, especially members of RSPO, to create awareness on sustainably manufactured products, communicate research and technological advances. Exhibitors can build capacity on sustainability practices, foremost in the field of biodiversity conservation, environmental protection and social equity, across the board of stakeholders along the palm oil supply chain.

an integral part of RT7 and to run concurrently with conference proceedings, it provides the opportunity to capture an audience of global stakeholders from the entire spectrum of the palm oil industry and affiliated interests and concerns. For RT7, despite the global economic turmoil, we expect close to 800 participants from more than 40 countries. RT6 in 2008 attracted more than 600 participants.

We invite you to share your organisation’s profile, expertise and experiences through the 20 exhibition booths available at RT7. To cover organisational costs, each exhibition booth (3m x 3m) will cost uSd 2,000. More information is provided in the exhibition guidelines below. Exhibitors are also welcome to participate as delegates or consider a poster presentation.

Selection of prospective exhibitors will be based on immediate relevance to RSPO and its activities as well as on a ‘first come first served basis’. Final decision on selection of successful exhibitors is at the discretion of the RSPO Executive Board.

To book a booth, please download and forward the completed form by post, fax or email by 15th october 2009.

We look forward to your presence at RT7.

exHIBITIon GUIDeLInes

a priority concern is that the exhibition should form a link between the sessions and objectives of RT7 with exhibition materials and content. In order to promote integration and congruity between the two elements, guidance to all potential exhibitors on the content of their booths is important.

Exhibitors are required to set up their booths in the afternoon of Sunday, 1st November 2009, one day before the conference proper.

Exhibits are to be taken down and removed from the exhibition hall on Wednesday, 4th November 2009, after 18.00.

oBJeCTIVes oF exHIBITIon

• demonstrate progress made by RSPO Members in promoting the production and use of sustainable palm oil

• demonstrate progress on projects endorsed by the RSPO or independent initiatives demonstrating clear contribution to the RSPO goals, mission or RT7 objectives

• Provide examples or initiatives that demonstrate efforts by key players along the supply chain in the promotion of sustainable palm oil

LoCATIon

Malaysia is situated just north of the equator in Southeast asia, and comprises of West Malaysia represented by the Malay Peninsula, and East Malaysia that spans the northern reaches of the Borneo, including dozens of small islands dotting the surrounding seas. The country covers an area of 329,847 square kilometers (127,320 square miles) and is divided into 13 states and three Federal Territories - Kuala Lumpur, Putrajaya and Labuan; politically, the three Federal Territories constitute another state - the 14th - even though dispersed throughout the country. West Malaysia borders Thailand at its northern border, in the south Singapore and is surrounded by the South China Sea in the east and the Straits of Melaka in the west. East Malaysia lies 640 kilometers away, across the South China Sea. Peninsular Malaysia is home to two-thirds of the country’s 27 million inhabitants. The less developed and still sparsely populated states of Sabah and Sarawak make up the eastern, Bornean part of the country. In both West and East Malaysia, coastal lowlands give way to a mountainous interior. Tropical vegetation abounds, and the country’s rain forests are believed to be the oldest in the world. Its mountains include two of the highest peaks in Southeast asia: Gunung Tahan (2,190 meters) on the central range of the peninsula, the Banjaran Titiwangsa, and Gunung Kinabalu (4,100 meters) in Sabah. Malaysia also boasts dramatic limestone outcrops, fascinating caves and spectacular waterfalls. The climate is humid tropical, with a mean humidity of ~80% throughout the year and diurnal temperatures ranging between 21 - 32°C. Weather is influenced by seasonal monsoons - northeast and southwest - which alternate dry and wet seasons.

The Malaysian Parliament comprises the Senate (dewan Negara) and the House of Representatives (dewan Rakyat).

about seventy percent of Malaysia remains under the cover of vegetation. Its rainforests are among the most complex and rich ecosystems in the world, home to about 12,000 - 15,000 species plants, 600 species of birds and 210 species of mammals. The country has set aside more than 1.49 million hectares of rainforest for protection with legislation enacted to conserve its precious rainforest and rare wildlife. Malaysia is rich in natural resources among them the world’s largest tin deposits and extensive reserves of oil and gas while the forests contain valuable hardwood timber. despite embracing modern technology to which one of the world’s tallest skyscrapers and a huge “cyber” center for computer businesses bear witness, the country still boasts some of the world’s densest forests (in Sabah and Sarawak), one of Southeast asia’s busiest ports (Georgetown) and quaint ex-colonial hill stations (Fraser’s Hill, Bukit Larut, Penang Hill and Cameron Highlands). Even in Kuala Lumpur, the federal capital characterized by ambitious new building projects, exotic markets abound, filled with local colours, scents and flavours.
