is a giant statue of st.Joseph and Jesus, whichclients often touchreverently. children areoften entranced by it aswell. two brothersrecently argued overwhether st. Joseph was“bueno o malo,” good orbad, and whether thebaby he was holding wasan angel or Jesus. peoplewho come to taller deJosé often show greatrespect for taller de Joséand its connection withthe church; theyfrequently describe it as aplace that feels peacefuland even holy.

every day, i meet amyriad of differentpeople who come intotaller de José seekingaccompaniment. on agiven day, i might see a couple seekinginterpretation for a citizenship interview. imight see an elderly man who needs helptranslating information he received abouthis public benefits. i might see a womanwho is a survivor of domestic abuse and iscourageously seeking healing and self-sufficiency for herself and her children.

before clients come to the office forthe first time, they often call for assistanceand ask, “what programs do you have

there?” when i tell them that taller deJosé can give them orientation to thesteps they need to take, as well asinformation and referrals to services, theyoften say, “that’s exactly what i need—orientation.” when a client first comesinto the waiting room, she often says sheis coming for one thing—for example,interpretation for a medicalappointment—but later adds, “i’m alsolooking for information about workers’

rights—can you help withthat?” i am glad to beable to tell her, “yes, wecan give you orientationabout all kinds ofthings—ask yourcompañera when youmeet with her.” even if aclient faces manydifferent challenges,because taller de Joséoffers holistic support, ican tell her, “someonewill talk with you aboutall the different issuesyou are facing, give yousupport, and help youfind resources.”

At the front desk, idaily meet people facinggreat challenges withperseverance, courage,grace. After a clientmeets with acompañero, he oftentells me, “i amso glad a

place like taller de Joséexists in this community.god bless all of you.” it is ajoy to be a part of a placewhere, in the midst of theirstruggles, people canexperience peace and leavewith a renewed sense ofhope.

meister eckhart, the german mystic and theologian, said,“if the only prayer you said in your whole life was, thank

you, that would suffice.” thank you is most definitely ourprayer at taller de José as we reflect on this past year in ourAnnual report.

As taller de José completes its sixth year, our hearts aregrateful for the many benefactors who have supported usthrough their time, talent and treasure. the number ofindividuals who donate to taller de José because they believein our mission continues to grow. we are blessed to be therecipients of grants to support the mission. this form offinancial accompaniment assists us in our operations andstaffing, keeping the doors open to meet the needs of theclients who seek our services.

taller de José has been blessed to have an excellent boardof directors who keeps us faithful to our mission andfiduciary responsibility. we have been blessed with a multi-generational staff that inspires me daily as they tenaciouslywork to assist our clients with compassion and care. ourcommunity partners continue to accompany us as weaccompany our clients. taller de José has been honored andprivileged to walk with those in need who share their journeywith us, allowing us to companion them along the way.

through these six years, our understanding ofaccompaniment has evolved. yes, it is connecting people toresources. yes, it is providing information to our clients. butit is much more. off-site accompaniments to court,government offices, and other agencies is our unique andtangible form of accompaniment. being present andwalking with the client through trauma, confusion, sufferingor uncertainty speaks to the heart of accompaniment.through accompaniment, we are changing lives; we arechanging systems; we are changing hearts by creating amore inclusive and welcoming world. And we are doing thiswith your support.
