The R&S®VTE video tester is a universal platform for testing video and audio interfaces on consumer electronics equipment during development and quality assurance. The future-oriented, modular platform accommodates up to three test modules and can be equipped with additional software to optimally suit the requirements of specific applications.

R&S®VTE Video TesterAt a glance

The R&S®VTE video tester initially addresses the new mobile high-definition link (MHL) interface standard for mobile devices and the high-definition multime-dia interface (HDMI). The R&S®VT-B2350 MHL RX/TX and R&S®VT-B2360/-B2361 HDMI RX options provide powerful realtime protocol analysis for day-to-day routine tests in development. In the raw test modes, users can additionally carry out tests in line with the compliance test specifications (CTS).

Featuring compact dimensions (3 HU, ½ 19") and conve-nient operation via a touchscreen and a localized GUI, the R&S®VTE is the ideal tool for use in development, quality assurance, and test systems.

In addition to providing the regular protocol tests, the R&S®VTE video tester also enables the analysis of trans-mitted media content, which makes it a truly unique instrument. The R&S®VTE video tester not only measures the digital component signal in the time domain, it also performs realtime difference picture analysis to identify video degradations in the transmitted signal. This makes it easy to verify whether mobile devices provide the required video quality when video content is transmitted over a Long Term Evolution (LTE) link. It is also possible to mea-sure the picture failure point (PFP) on set-top boxes.

Realtime protocol analysisThe R&S®VTE video tester features extensive analysis functions for verifying MHL sources such as mobile phones. Audio and video content is output in realtime on the R&S®VTE or transmitted via an auxiliary HDMI port and played on a TV set. High-definition multimedia interface (HDMI) testing with full 4k support

When equipped with the R&S®VT-B2360/-B2361 HDMI RX option, the R&S®VTE video tester can perform source pro-tocol tests on the HDMI interface.

Realtime protocol analysisThis option features extensive analysis functions for verify-ing HDMI sources such as set-top boxes, Blu-ray Disc™ players, media servers and tablets.

Audio and video content is output in realtime on the base unit or transmitted via an auxiliary HDMI port and played on an external TV set. The video resolution supported is up to Full HD with the R&S®VT-B2360 HDMI RX 225 MHz option or up to 4k with the R&S®VT-B2361 HDMI RX 300 MHz option. Relevant protocol parameters are also displayed: ❙ Video timing parameters such as pixel clock and resolution in line with CEA-861 for resolutions up to 4k × 2k or Full HD

❙ Audio data ❙ High-bandwidth digital content protection (HDCP) status and the keys used

HEAC interface testingThe HDMI Ethernet and audio return channel (HEAC) ex-tension can be functionally tested on the board itself. An HEAC interface is available for extensive application tests and permits the connection of devices such as a PC.

Complementary functions for media content analysis

Besides carrying out protocol tests and displaying the transmitted video and audio content, the R&S®VTE can automatically analyze the content transmitted from the different analysis modules.

Analysis of digital component signals in the time domainThe R&S®VT-K2100 video analysis option measures the timing and level of each component of the digital video signal. Results are displayed in the time domain (scope); measurements are triggered on lines or pixels. Two markers are available to show results in detail.

To verify whether color transmission is correct, the color amplitudes can be displayed graphically in vectorscope mode. The option also shows the digital RGB/YCbCr values for any desired pixel.

Double ended quality analysisThe R&S®VT-K2110 AV inspection and R&S®VT-K2111 AV distortion analysis options rely on realtime difference analysis to identify differences between the measured video signal and a reference signal. The reference signal is recorded and saved via the test interface before the mea-surement is carried out.

The R&S®VT-K2110 AV inspection option provides basic difference picture analysis. It displays the measured video signal, the reference signal and the difference picture in realtime. The option also indicates the percentage match for the measured video signal and the reference signal.

The R&S®VT-K2111 AV distortion analysis option provides deeper insight into the difference picture through detailed numerical and graphical analysis. It shows PSNR, SSIM and MOS at frame level. Results are displayed graphi-cally and as numeric values in a table. A powerful trigger function also reveals errors that viewers can see, such as picture failure point (PFP).

Audio analysisThe R&S®VT-K2150 audio analysis option is a powerful tool for determining the quality of audio signals processed in user equipment. This option supports users in analyzing uncompressed audio data transmitted over MHL or HDMI on up to eight channels based on audio parameters such as audio level, frequency response, phase, S/N ratio, dis-tortion and crosstalk.

The difference picture analysis function detects video degradations and

analyzes them using suitable metrics.

The timing and level of the digital component signal are measured in the

time domain.

Local operation via touchscreenThe R&S®VTE has a capacitive 7-inch touchscreen to enable straightforward, intuitive control. The GUI supports several languages. The instrument also has a rotary knob and navigation keys, as well as ports for connecting a USB mouse and keyboard.

Remote control and remote operation over a network from a tablet or PCThe R&S®VTE video tester can be operated remotely over a network from a tablet or PC using a remote desktop link. In addition to these standard functions, the R&S®VTE has a VXI-11 remote control interface that accepts SCPI com-mands compliant with the industry standard. This makes it easy to integrate the R&S®VTE into test systems.

Integrated R&S®AVBrun test sequencerThe R&S®VTE is equipped with the built-in R&S®AVBrun test sequencer that can optionally be enabled. This tool makes it easy to automate even complex test routines without the need to create source code. Two ready-to-run test cases are also available for specific applications: MHL CTS system source test case (R&S®VT-KT3352) and MHL CTS system sink test case (R&S®VT-KT3351).

Application examples

Testing video over LTE on mobile devicesWith the introduction of LTE, more and more video con-tent is transmitted via mobile radio links. Common appli-cations include video conferencing and video streaming. To check the immunity to interference of video transmis-sions on the mobile device, mobile device conformance tests simulate interference on the LTE link. This is done by embedding errors in the IP data stream or by introducing noise or fading to degrade RF signal transmission.

A typical test setup consists of an R&S®CMW500 proto-col tester, a mobile device with an MHL or HDMI video output, and an R&S®VTE video tester equipped with the following options: R&S®VT-B2350 MHL RX/TX or R&S®VT-B2360 HDMI RX, R&S®VT-K2110 AV inspection and R&S®VT-K2111 AV distortion analysis.

The R&S®CMW500 generates the video data stream and simulates errors that typically occur in the IP data stream during network transmission, such as packet delay and packet loss. The mobile phone decodes the incoming video data and outputs it to the R&S®VTE via its AV inter-face. The R&S®VTE can then reliably detect video degrada-tions, either operator-controlled or using automatic test routines.

Testing MHL and HDMI interfaces for conformance with the standardThe MHL and HDMI interface protocols of consumer elec-tronics devices are tested for standard-conformant be-havior during development and certification to ensure the devices‘ interoperability with other components. Especially at the development stage, the key capability required of test equipment is to display protocol parameters in real-time, with simultaneous decoding and analysis of the me-dia content. A special application is conformance testing in line with the compliance test specifications (CTS) as a final interoperability test. The MHL/HDMI CTS tests require offline analysis of the raw data transmitted on the TMDS channels. Software extensions allow offline analysis to complement MHL/HDMI signal realtime analysis.
