On Friday, September 7, 2018, a delightful late summer day, 25 Grand Lifers boarded one of Immanuel’s shuttle buses promptly at 9:30 AM and headed for Lancaster, PA. Our plan today was to see Sight and Sound’s production of Jesus. With Bob Karch driving, we arrived in plenty of time.

Traffic was amazingly light all the way, and we arrived at our first stop, the Bird in Hand Restaurant, a half hour ahead of our scheduled noon lunch. They quickly sat us down and invited us to enjoy their varied and delicious buffet. We all ate until we were full (all right, more than full). After lunch, the group still had a little time for shopping at the restaurant’s gift shop before we had to board our bus to return to the theater. Sight and Sound staff gave us a great parking spot making it an easy walk to the theater.

The production was amazing, even by the normally high standards of Sight and Sound. The sets were astounding, as always. The video on the huge screen in back added a wonderful extra element to what was on stage—the hills around the Sea of Galilee, a storm on the sea, and many other scenes. The acting and singing were first class. And of course, we had an angel descending at one time and lots of live animals.

The first act started in Capernaum with Jesus calling His first disciples. We begin to form a picture in our minds of Jesus as a man who enjoyed people and laughed easily. That first encounter with all the fish and the men deserting their boats and nets set the stage for the rest of the drama. We listened to part of His sermon on the mount, went with Him on a pilgrimage to Jerusalem and a visit to Martha’s house, saw a night time meeting between Jesus and Nicodemus, and saw Him cure a demon-possessed man in Gadara. The act ended with a violent sea storm and Jesus walking on the water with Peter before He calmed the storm.

The second act portrayed events near the end of Jesus’ earthly life. First, Jesus raised Lazarus from the dead. Then He made His triumphal entry into Jerusalem, where with fierce anger, he scattered all

the temple merchants as the Pharisees looked on aghast. Then we watched as the Pharisees plotted against Him and conspired with Judas. The fellowship of the last supper came next, followed by His agonizing moments in the Garden of Gethsemane, and finally, His capture. Finally, we witnessed Jesus’ horrible death, His resurrection, and His ascension. The story ended on Pentecost with the Holy Spirit arriving and Peter giving a clear presentation of the gospel message.

After the show ended at 5:30 PM, we stopped for fast food just north of the Maryland state line and then headed back home. Rain delayed our drive home but as always, Bob Karch delivered us safely back at Immanuel around 9:30 PM.

We thank the Lord for a great day of fellowship, a

great buffet lunch at Bird in Hand, a wonderful and

worshipful portrayal of the life of our Savior, and

safety as we traveled. We thank our Savior for

living that life without sin, then dying to pay for our

sins. Thank you Bob Karch for driving us once

again!

On Friday, September 21, 2018, a big group of Grand Lifers gathered in the Immanuel Atrium for one of our favorite programs, a concert by the Burke Acoustic Music Society. The group today was led by Pastor Bob Hartman, as usual. The group included regulars Alex Hairgrove, David Leach, and Bob Snyder playing guitars (and Bob Hartman also playing a mandolin and even a harmonica). They were joined today by Jesus Morales on string bass and Dan Crabtree with a variety of percussion instruments.

The group performed secular and Christian mu-sic with a mostly country vibe. They started with a couple of regular pieces—Living in God’s World and Alex’s rendition of King of the Road. Along the way they did a couple of Beatles numbers—Will You Still Need Me, Will You Still Feed Me When I’m 64? and All My Loving. They did a Bob Dylan tune, You Ain’t Goin’ Nowhere, a Cajun number, We’ll Have Big Fun on the Bayou, and many more. Their Christian set included Working on a Building for the Lord, There Ain’t No Grave That Can Hold My Body Down, and Tis So Sweet to Trust in Jesus (with audience participa-tion).

A real highlight of the show was when our own Jennis Horn got up in front of the band and belted out a spectacular rendition of Stand by Your Man. Way to go, Jennis. We all loved it. You didn’t look like Tammy Wynette, but you sure sounded like her.

Following the musical performances, we en-

joyed a lunch of chicken salad croissant sand-

wiches, salad, mixed fruit, and chocolate chip

cookies provided by Hannah’s Catering.

Is in distress so the Beast releases her to return to the village. When she arrives back in town howev-er, the townspeople lock both Belle and her father in a carriage headed toward the insane asylum after Belle rejects a marriage proposal from Gaston. Gas-ton, while being the most eligible bachelor in the town, is also a narcissist who is only interested in Belle because he considers her to be as beautiful as himself. The villagers form a mob that follows Gaston to the castle to kill the beast. However, all the household servants fight back and chase the townspeople away. Gaston however, finds the beast and challenges him to a fight. The beast is heartbroken that Belle left but starts to fight back when he sees that she re-turned for him. After an epic battle, Gaston falls to his death and Belle and the Beast are reunited long enough for her to confess that she loves him. The spell is broken and the prince, along with all his household servants, are transformed back into hu-mans and Belle and the prince live happily ever af-ter.

Wyn Delano, who played the beast, had exceptional performances in two previous Riverside perfor-mances we had attended, and he had another one here—powerful singing and acting that made his character both fierce and vulnerable.

The production ended at about 3:30 PM and we ar-

rived back at Immanuel before 5:00 PM. We thank

the Lord for a great day of fellowship, a nice lunch,

a well performed musical production, and safety as

we traveled. And thanks to Bob Karch for driving

us.

October Outing Riverside Dinner Theater

On October 3, 2018, a delightful early fall day, 20 Grand Lifers boarded an Immanuel shuttle bus at 9:30 AM and headed to Riverside Dinner Theater in Frederickburg to see Beauty and the Beast. Bob Karch drove our bus. Traffic was light all the way, and we arrived at Riverside in less than an hour. While the service was great, the food itself was not.

The story started with a selfish prince who refused to show hospitality to a visiting enchantress dis-guised as a beggar. In return, she casted a spell on him transforming him into a beast. The only way for the spell to be broken was for him to learn how to love another and for that person to love him in return. All of this must take place before the last petal falls from the enchanted rose the enchantress leaves behind for the beast. We are introduced to Belle, a beautiful bookworm, in the village square. She is eagerly reading a book, her passion, while others there pronounce her, and inventor father, as odd. We then come upon the father’s first interaction with the beast in the woods as he is on his way to an inventor’s convention. Maurice gets lost in the woods and wolves encircle him to attack when he escapes into the beast’s castle. He finds that all the household servants have been turned into objects fitting their positions—a clock (head of household staff), a candle stick (valet), a tea keattle (the head cook), etc. Belle finds her father’s horse has re-turned without her father and takes the horse to lead her to her father’s location at the beast’s castle. After finding her father in the dungeon and encoun-tering the beast herself, Belle offers to take the place of her frail father which the beast accepts. Maurice then tries to rally townspeople to help him rescue Belle which results in the town calling him insane and boarding him up in his own home. Belle and the Beast begin to form a bond after he res-cues her from wolves after an escape attempt. She sees he isn’t all beast and grows to care for him and he for her. As they grow to love each other through their mutual love for books, Belle sees her father is

Melissa Williams had fixed us a very nice lunch—an early Thanksgiving dinner. We had a delicious salad, ham, mashed potatoes, green beans, and rolls. It was all very tasty. For des-sert, we had wonderful brownies and chocolate chip cookies with lots of chocolate.

October Luncheon Brain Training

On Friday, October 19th, Grand Life had a visit with Mary Schlesinger who talked about brain training. She specializes in interactive metro-nome therapy which retrains the brain to coor-dinate movement with the body. She has helped patients with learning disabilities, Parkinsons, and other mobility inhibiting issues. She also raffled off a free session and Jeanne Ar-nales won! W are thankful to Mary for coming and giving her presentation! If you were not able to attend and would like to know more, please visit her website at www.timing4life.com.

November Luncheon Serving Central Union

Mission

On Friday, November 16th, a small group of Grand-Lifers assembled for our November luncheon. Our program today was different from our usual program. Instead of having someone else give us a presentation, we en-gaged in some ministry to Central Union Mis-sion. We did, however, start with a presenta-tion on the mission from Dave Treadwell, direc-tor emeritus of the mission. And once again, the ICS kindergarten kids joined us for a few minutes. They sang a Thanksgiving song for us and gave us all hand-made cards. Then we made cards. We had cards already prepared. Then we set to work with our glue bottles and pens. We either glued printed vers-es on the cards or wrote them ourselves, and perhaps added a personal message. Central Union Mission hands these cards out to the peo-ple who come into the mission.

On Wednesday, November 28th, a group of six Grand Lifers traveled to the Pentagon for a tour. Grand Life was paired with a few other tourists and led by two young military men. Grand Life had the opportunity to see the area of impact from the airplane that struck the Pentagon on 9/11. There was quite a bit of information packed into this hour long tour! Grand Life saw tributes to all branches of the military alt-hough there wasn’t enough time to stop and carefully peruse any of the exhibits. We were given a short amount of time to observe the 9/11 Memorial Chapel room which is connect-ed to a functioning chapel. We were informed that over 26,000 people work in the Pentagon. Though we only saw three of the five above ground levels, we processed quite a bit of his-torical information during that time.
