President’s LetterRedesigned Renewal

It is important that you realize the complexity of the upgrades we have made to your training center as we begin 2012. The alterations made in preparation for this year have been made with one vision in mind, and that is to improve the educational experience you and/or your staff will receive in this environment. Since upgrade paths are familiar to all of us in our now digitally dominant industry, I can best describe this by comparing Windows and Apple upgrades, and since I am fortunate enough to be writing this in Word, on my iMac, I have a modicum of expertise in this area.

Keeping up with the Windows program updates and security updates is now almost a full time job. Every week there is a change that is considered “critical” by Microsoft, so we dutifully turn our computers over to them for the latest and greatest. Apple on the other hand has yet to have a program update or security update in the 18 months I have had my iMac. When Apple goes from say Snow Leopard to Lion, it is a BIG deal. First of all, it takes over 3 hours to download. When it’s loaded, all the new programming for the system and the programs are right there for you to take advantage of immediately.

We like the way Apple thinks, so get ready for this “download” of immediately usable information that can change your life personally and improve the operating efficiency of any of your facilities.

RSTI scours the globe looking for affordable diagnostic imaging equipment, so that you are able to train on current technology.

These installations come at a high cost, but they are here for several outstanding reasons:

To train you better than the OEM

To help hospitals lower their overhead by dumping those high priced contracts in favor of doing the work yourself

To ensure you leave our hands-on training environment ready to repair, maintain, and PM imaging equipment

LOOK AT THE NEW “FAMILY” COURSES BEINg AddEd FOR 2012 ON YOUR BEHALF:

GE Revolution Family—With a 2003 Revolution (Gipeto) XR/d, Version #1 and a 2006 Revolution (Lightning) XR/d, Version #2, installed in our labs, you will not only learn those systems as well as the Eagle, Condor, Hummingbird, Gipeto, Falcon, and Thunder. This class puts you on the cutting edge of the entire Revolution flat panel group.

GE definium Family—With a 2008 Definium 5000 & 6000 installed here in the labs, you will learn not only those systems, but also the Definium 8000, the Sedecal URS+, the Meridian X100, and the RadPro URS. This class puts you on the cutting edge with the entire Definium flat panel group.

GE discovery Family—Taught on the Definium 6000, you will learn this system as well as the Discovery XR650 and Optima 640. This class puts you on the cutting edge with the entire Discovery flat panel group.

GE FFdM Mammo Family—Taught on a 2003 GE Senographe 2000D and a GE Senographe Essential, this new class teaches you all 3 GE

immediately clickable for you to get the entire picture of our imaging training in 2012.

RSTI gave you a current picture and biography of every person on our staff. Those people who may have been just names in the past are now front and center.

RSTI reformatted every class picture from 1999 to present. Now you can search by year, month and date for every class you or your friends have attended. We run approximately 90 classes per year, so there are over 1000 class photos archived for you to again rekindle our ongoing relationship.

These are just a few of the enhancements made to the 2012 RSTI Website. Use it all you want and provide us with feedback at any time.

See you soon!

FFDM Mammography Systems, including the 2000D, the DS, and the Essential. This class puts you on the cutting edge with the entire GE Digital Mammography group.

LAST, BUT CERTAINLY NOT LEAST, RSTI HAS FINALLY AddEd SIEMENS CATH LAB TRAININg.

Siemens Axiom Artis Family-Taught on both the FP 10 and the basic system, side by side, this is a class you will not want to miss. This class puts you on the cutting edge with the entire Axiom Artis Cath Lab group.

RSTI welcomes these new families to our Course Schedule in 2012. All of these classes have been added at the request of our student database, so if interested, get registered right away. None of these courses is inexpensive, but we worked hard to keep them significantly lower than the comparable course from the OEM. It’s kind of like comparing a PC to an Apple computer. There are many PC makers out there today pushing inexpensive hardware and software. Just as there is only one Apple, there is only one RSTI.

One final note…You must visit the brand new RSti website just launched on 11/23/11. As we continue building the brand called RSTI, this has been a major achievement for us in 2011 that will be used frequently by both those who already know us, and now, maybe some of you that stubbornly refused to send your educational needs to the best place in the world. If you do nothing else, please spend 10-15 minutes to peruse a website that was designed for service engineers. Everything we put into this site was “Engineered for Learning™,” and we purposely made it as friendly as it is professional.

HERE ARE SOME OF THE KEY PAgES THAT YOU CANNOT MISS.

RSTI hired professional photographers to come in and get our entire lab structure online with amazing high resolution pictures of every lab. See for yourself our complete installation base of equipment dedicated to your education.

RSTI created real-time interactive course schedule from which you can not only see every course and its outline, but also meet the instructor, check the pricing and book the class. All of these items are

New Family Classes at RSTI in 2012By John Drew

In 2012, RSTI plans to offer a series of new classes designed to allow the engineer to service a particular family of equipment. A family is perhaps a few different manufacturers using the same pieces and parts or a single manufacturer using the same pieces on many different systems. In this article, I am going to address a couple new classes we are calling the Definium Family and the Discovery Family. They are intended to cover the systems listed below and perhaps even more.

Definium Family Class A. dEFINIUM 5000

B. SEdECAL OPTIMA URS+ LP

C. MERIdIAN X100/RAdPRO URS

d. RAdPRO URS

Discovery Family ClassA. dISCOvERY XR 650

B. dEFINIUM 6000

C. OPTIMA XR 640Many times systems are the same but have different names simply because they are sold in different countries or by different companies. We will address this by ensuring our schedule reflects the different names. (Make sure you check our website for the latest schedule.) Now this is not always the situation. There can be some differences in these systems. They may have a different console or x-ray tube, detectors may come from different manufacturers, and they may even look slightly different. However, in these courses, we are confident that an engineer can service all of them by attending a single class.

We will take a look at the similarities and differences in all the systems so your service engineer can be confident regardless of the situation that arises. We will cover these topics and more:

System Operations

calibrations

power distribution

troubleshooting

Software

digital detector technology (ddt)

Just because a system has a different name or is not exactly the same as the system installed at your facility does not mean it cannot be serviced by you.

In fact, by training on a family of similar systems, you enhance your facility’s ability to take systems off contract if you are in house or to put a system under contract if you are an Independent Service Organization (ISO) or Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM). This will result in cost savings that can be put to use in other areas.

At RSTI this is a part of our continued 27-year mission to improve patient outcomes by providing the highest quality multi-vendor, and now multi-product or family, training available. At the same time it is a chance to realize some cost savings that we could all use about now.

3.GE.Digital.Rad.Rooms.in.1.Class!By Todd Boyland

We’ve added Another Digital RAD Room to Our Labs. The GE Revolution XR/d 2X platform is just one of our latest additions. We’ve been offering training courses on the GE Revolution XR/d & XQ/I for a few years now. The initial demand for training was for the XR/d 1X platform. The 1X platform consists of:

proteus xR/a table & OtS

Scpu generator cabinet w/ the titan control from the Advantx/legacy R&F system

control console from the Advantx/legacy R&F system

Sun AdS computer system used in the Senographe digital Mammo workstations

Revolution 41cmx41cm digital table & wallstand detectors

With the recent purchase of the 2X platform, we’ve adapted our XR/d course curriculum to include all Revolution XR/d & XQ/I systems. This new course is called the GE Revolution DR Family.

As before, the course includes the XR/d 1X platform & the XQ/i.

The addition of the 2x platform adds the following:

proteus xR/a table & OtS

JEdi generator

RciM console

hp Magic pc

Revolution 41cmx41cm digital table & wallstand detectors

This means the 2 week Revolution DR Family course will prepare the service professionals for servicing both the SCPU & JEDI generators, as well as the Sun ADS & HP Magic PC’s!

Students can expect a typical RSTI packed-with-information course including full system calibrations on the generators, positioner calibrations, digital detector calibrations, full software loads, preventive maintenance procedures, troubleshooting , & diagnostics.

If your facility has a GE Revolution XR/d 1X, 2X, or both systems, this is a great opportunity to get those systems off OEM contract and into the hands of the RSTI Trained Service Professionals!

Have you ever met that guy who has an uncanny ability to walk into an imaging room that has a problem, look at the image and seem to go straight to the problem? Or the guy you call in when you’ve been beating your head against the wall on a problem for a week and he comes in, asks a few questions, makes a couple measurements and gets right to the problem? We generally refer to those guys as “Service Professionals.”

What’s the difference between a Service Professional and an X-Ray Repair Guy? That may sound like the opening line of a joke. But in this case it is a serious question.

A “Service Professional” has the ability to interact at a higher level with the customer because his or her education includes the basic information presented in classes like RSTI’s X-Ray Certificate Series Phase I, Principles of Servicing Computed Tomography Systems and Multi-Vendor Ultrasound. Classes like this present as a portion of the class the same type of material that the technologists receive in their college classes. Many of our classes in the different modalities have introductory sections for the same reason. Think about it this way, shouldn’t the service guy have at least the same background information as the operator? System theory and how it relates to other systems in the same modality is another highly valuable basic portion of the training classes. Having an understanding of why the system does one thing or another or why a certain circuit was used for a specific function can be very important when a given error code is vague, unknown or misleading.

The Value of “The Basics”Any Modality... Anywhere

The “X-Ray Repair Guy” has been to a couple of short “service” classes along the way, but the classes were geared more toward performing PMs and addressing a couple problems that may arise.

The classes will probably cover using some of the systems logs and may even look at a few error messages. In the interest of brevity these types of classes spend little or no time covering how the system actually works from an operations or theoretical standpoint.

Another big reason for maintaining introductory or general knowledge topics in our classes is our goal of promoting professionalism through advanced degrees such as the Associates program we have been working on with ECPI University.

Colleges, Universities and RSTI place a high value on the well rounded individual. We could make our classes shorter by removing some of the basic theory topics from our curriculum, but we are in the business of creating service professionals, not X-ray repair guys.

So if you want to be able to troubleshoot your way out of a wet paper bag, don’t be fooled into believing that a one week class in CT is going to make you the “go to guy” for the VCT or any other high tech imaging system. Come to RSTI and get the training you really need to become a true “Service Professional.”

TestimonialsFrom Our AlumniMARK TRIMMER chartercARE health partners of Rhode island

Mark is currently employed with CharterCARE out of Rhode Island but has worked at Aramark as well as AGFA throughout his career. His broad perspective and working knowledge of the medical Imaging industry provides a highly credited and valuable insight as to the day to day operations and student welfare. He describes RSTI as a “well-oiled machine!”

“RSTI’s certificate series training is an essential building block for a successful career in the medical imaging industry.” It has given me a boost in confidence going forward, not just in the medical imaging industry but in all aspects of technology and troubleshooting electronics. The diversity of the equipment available, the ability to go knee deep in an X-ray system and to learn on it free from worry of breaking the equipment is priceless. The instructors at RSTI are very knowledgeable and provide a great synergy of book knowledge and hands-on experience.

“From a hiring perspective, the RSTI Certificate series, Phases I-IV, is a highly respected and sought after knowledge and skills base when looking through a resume. The RSTI Certificate is a prerequisite that is looked for when making an ultimate decision to hire a new imaging service professional.”
