President’s Letter: Spring Rolls in RenewalThose of you in warm weather climates have no idea how cold and snowy it has been in Solon, Ohio.

The good news is that by the time you receive this newsletter, the weather will have changed to Spring and Summer. So much for global warming… I am certain that Al Gore got buried this winter in those east coast blizzards.

The weather has certainly not slowed down our training growth. RSTI had record training revenue last year, and we are off and running in 2011. Most of the new equipment we put in place has paid for itself according to our plan. There continues to be strong demand for DR classes and OEC. Early indicators for 2011 point to similar results… If you need any of these classes, you need to sign up without delay. The sooner you book it, the better.

In addition to the new equipment in our training labs, we have also done some much needed remodeling over the last several months at your training center:

RSTI has added a newly renovated classroom in the back of the training center with its own entrance, bathrooms and lunchroom. It is perfect for those needing private training classes for groups of 6-8.

RSTI added a state-of-the-art conference room/distance learning center. It is equipped to teach up to 8 students at a time, live over the Internet. In the near future, look for classes on radiation safety and MQSA/ACR compliance. Additionally, we are investigating a new level of technical support for sometime later this year.

RSTI completely remodeled the men’s restroom. All the fixtures are touchless, making soap dispensing and hand drying not only a breeze, but most importantly sanitary. We also put in new automatic urinals, and put doors on the stalls.

Recently RSTI added a new staff accountant. Yvonne Gasper is a graduate of Cleveland State University and is a welcome addition to the RSTI family. She is a wiz with numbers, statistics, charts and graphs, so we put her to work right away not only in the traditional role, but also in helping us analyze such things as student evaluations and the ROI on purchases we continue to make in our labs. She has a great sense of humor and has quickly become a pleasure to have at RSTI.

Lastly, RSTI has been actively looking for additional instructors. You might think that in this economy, we would have several to choose from, but that’s not the case. As we expand our training base, we need knowledgeable people who can stand in front of experienced entry-level engineers and provide them with the quality education they deserve and require. Look for more news on this as the year progresses.

Hope to see you soon,

Jim MonroP R E S I D E N T & C O O

Another Step Toward a Real-World EnvironmentWe here at RSTI are constantly striving to improve the student learning environment. In the last number of years RSTI has gone from analog-only lab facilities to analog and digital systems in most modalities we teach. Recently RSTI added another facet to our labs to improve the student training experience. It was time for a few new CR systems to round out the facilities.

Konica Nano-P Computed Radiography systems are now located in all the corners of our laboratory. That’s right! We have installed four systems for students to use. When attending even the basic

CR in the LabPhase classes, students work with film, CR, and DR systems, much like the real-world environment they see at their facilities.

Nano-P is the private practitioner version of Konica’s CR suite. These systems are complete with CS-2 workstation and 110 reader. All of them are tied in with our PACS for modality work list and storing of images.

ECPI Update

Higher Education OpportunitiesAnyone even remotely familiar with RSTI knows that we have always strived to bring positive recognition to the diagnostic imaging service profession. From support for certification through testing, to our obvious promotion of advanced education, we have never backed away from this thought.

Through the years, RSTI has spent countless hours improving our own training programs or working with other institutions of higher learning to provide Certificates of Completion, Diplomas and Advanced Degrees that are meaningful and acknowledge the efforts of students in the imaging service field.

For the past several years, RSTI has been conducting medical imaging service classes at ECPI, in Charlotte, NC. We have been working with ECPI to develop an Associates program for our industry.

The Medical Imaging Technology Program has is now fully approved and ECPI is now actively recruiting qualified students.

“After we’re done putting this back together, it’s on to the space station.”

Soon we will be finalizing the administration process so RSTI’s students can take advantage of this opportunity. RSTI believes that a degree that focuses specifically on medical imaging service is what the dedicated imaging service professionals need to earn the credibility they so richly deserve.

This is a major step forward in the evolution of the medical imaging service profession. Even as we deliver this good news, we remain hopeful that a Bachelors Program will also become available soon.

2011 Roadshow

Cover’s Column: Another Program R.U.N. Its Course? In the twenty plus years I have been with RSTI, I have seen several groups and organizations attempt to coordinate the many individual service professionals in a way that would allow them to support each other.

The Society for Radiological Engineering (SRE) was one of the first organizations dedicated to the issues facing medical imaging service professionals. Unfortunately, this organization no longer exists. There are, however, many statewide biomedical societies that provide some support to Imaging service professionals as well as biomed service professionals. These typically reach only to the service professionals within the biomed group.

Sadly, another program that was intended to bring together the imaging service world in a self-help fashion is going the way of the Dodo bird. RSTI’s RUN program was not intended to be a tech support system providing support strictly from RSTI, but a network of service professionals with varying experience helping each other through technical problems. After the program first started, a few people listed themselves as experts on some equipment. With several hundred members and only a few people willing to lend their expertise, the program simply ground itself down to just a few members.

As of now, RsTI will no longer offer the RUN program. If you are currently one of our few RUN members, your membership will be unaffected. However, at the end of your current term, there will be no renewal available.

RSTI remains committed to doing what it can to help the diagnostic imaging service profession to continue to deliver the first-rate services the medical industry needs. As was made available through the RUN program, service manuals that we have in our library will still be available. Some of our specialized test equipment will also be available, but only when they are not needed for classes.

Our goal is to foster the kind of sustainable networking needed to help all service professionals meet the demands of their customers. Until we find another way, the best networking opportunity is the personal contacts and friendships you will develop with other service professionals during your training sessions at RSTI.

Mike’s Tech Tip

The Cure for Slow PC’sSometimes our service PC’s run exceptionally slow. In the Windows world, the first plan of action is to reboot. Normally this fixes the “problem.” On occasion, however, we have more localized issues, such as slow internet speeds or a particular website that does not load. A couple of simple DOS commands can usually resolve these issues.

We first need to open a command prompt. This can be done by clicking on the start button then clicking run. Follow this by typing CMD and pressing enter. You should now have a “DOS window” open.

Next we need to type the following commands, followed by pressing the enter key.

ipconfig /flushdns ipconfig /registerdnsThe reason this fixes internet issues is that there is a list your computer holds that correlates Domain Names (i.e. google.com) with their IP addresses (i.e. 66.6.161.10), rather than always relying on your internet provider’s DNS servers. On occasion, and for various reasons beyond the scope of this article, this table your computer has stored can be corrupted. The first command entered deletes the possibly corrupted table, while the second command sets up a new table with fresh data from your service provider’s DNS servers.

Websites cannot be accessed directly by their domain name, they need to be translated to IP addresses. If you enter the IP address listed above into your web browser you will go directly to google.com.

Dave’s RaveOEC9600 SRAM Back-up and restoration.Greetings from the labs at RSTI! Spring is in the air and there is a feeling of hope as well. It could be the warmer weather and melting snow. Then again, it could also be the new tool we have added to our OEC service arsenal. The OMNIDrive. A friend told me about the OMNIDrive and we had to get one to check out for ourselves.

wHat’s sO sPEcIal abOut tHIs drIVE? Well let me ask you this. What is one of the scariest parts of maintaining the OEC 9600? If you answered “maintaining the calibration data on the SRAM” I am here to tell you hope is at hand!

Let’s face it, the OEC9600 C-Arm went “End of Life” back in 2007 and the numerous units still in service often don’t get treated as nicely as a facility’s newer equipment. Often they are relegated to a back up role and spend a lot of time in storage. It is during these long periods of storage that the battery backing up the calibration data and other important files on the SRAM card fails.

dId yOu HaVE a back-uP? How can you even make a back-up when your service laptop won’t recognize the SRAM at all (due to its formatting) when you plug it into the PCMCIA slot?

“I’ll just put in a new battery and recalibrate the generator!” you might say in the event of a crash. Guess again, buckaroo. If you don’t have the special calibration box (made of unobtainium) and a dynalizer with the proper port to interface with the cal box that just isn’t going to happen.

tHIs Is wHErE tHE OMnIdrIVE cOMEs In.Here is what the International Products Inc. literature has to say about the OMNIDrive.

“OMNIDrive is an external PC Card reader for SRAM, ATA Flash Cards, CompactFlash Cards (adapter required), ATA hard disks type II, SmartMedia Cards

(adapter required). It is designed for harsh industrial applications and heavy duty load.”

The literature also provides this important tidbit:

“The international registered product ID used in the OMNIDrive guarantees a 100% correct identification of the PC Card.”

The simple beauty of it is that the OMNIDrive has no problem seeing and or reading/writing to the 9600’s SRAM.

RSTI Equipment Tired of spending TONS of money on high dollar parts? We have a solution that can ease the pain. Let us give you an example…

PrOblEM: On a GE Precision 500D there are many high dollar parts that eventually need replacing. Some are repairable, and some are not. I spoke with someone at a facility that ran into a problem with their Saturn computer. This computer is inside the generator cabinet which controls the functionality and work. The system cannot work without it. When you replace the computer or exchange with the manufacture, list price is $55,000 plus. If you replace the computer outright it is $65,000 plus or more.

VIablE sOlutIOn:RSTI can supply you with a pre-owned complete functional GE Precision 500D. YES, it will cost

more money in the short term. YES, it will be more expensive than buying one part… BUT it will save you more money in the long run. When you purchase the entire system, RSTI can send you the Saturn computer overnight, or that same day. This particular part paid for almost half of the used 500D price. Now your facility has a “parts unit” to pull parts from whenever you want. We can list many parts that will cost more than enough money to pay for the complete unit. Before you know it the system will pay for itself.

Rather than spending a ton of money on one high dollar part, just think: What can I pay for an entire used system? Will that justify spending all this money on one part when I can own an entire unit to use for parts in the future?
