Welcome to the 2014 RST collection, when we founded
RST in 1988 our mission was simple, to design and
manufacture the best value, no-compromise collection
of motorcycle clothing possible. 26 Years later the
general rules we stick by still apply and this is why
RST is now the UK’s number one motorcycle clothing
brand. Our entire collection is designed by us at our HQ
in Derbyshire and thoroughly tested in the UK’s most
demanding conditions. We do thousands of miles in our
products before I personally sign off each one. You’ll see
our sponsored riders in both development products and
off the peg suits, Cameron Donald stood on the podium
at the 2013 TT wearing a Tractech Evo suit straight out
of our warehouse and badged by our race dept, a service
that is available to everyone!

Cameron Donald has become one of the most accomplished road racers of his generation.
The Australian motorcycle racer from Melbourne began his career in motocross
in 1996 taking the Victorian Dirt track championship for three consecutive years.
The thirty-six year old then quickly progressed to the roads winning the 600cc title at Macau in 2001. The ever likeable Aussie honed his
skills further in the Australian domestic short circuit series, as well as a return visit to Macau in 2003 to claim the 600cc Grand Prix win.
With a win in the Singapore endurance race that same year, the Isle of Man TT beckoned and in 2005, Donald competed in his first TT and
North-West 200 picking up the Newcomers award in both events. Here Cameron talks exclusively to RST Moto Direct about his road racing
career, lettuce leaves and spring water, trying not to kill dead things, the Isle of Man TT and the exciting future he has ahead of him.
RST: A lot of Australians progress their careers in Europe, whether that is on the roads or the short circuits. What is the
attraction for so many Aussie’s coming over here to compete?
Basically a move over to Europe is one step closer to the World Championship.Australia is just so far from Europe. And I would say
that so many people in Australia now look at the British Champion-ship as an example with more interest because of the standards.
It’s certainly a platform for riders to progress their careers and potentially make a living in the process. That has a huge bearing
on why so many Australians decide to take the plunge. So whether it’s on the road racing, short circuit, dirt racing or speedway, the
opportunities are significantly higher and it’s a much bigger pond for motorcyclists to develop their profession more fully. The bar is
certainly raised and it does provide more options.
RST: Do you think riders coming over here should be given time to adjust when they make the step over to racing in Europe?
For sure, I would certainly agree and it does take time to adjust. But when you look at the situation now, what team can give a rider time.
From a teams’ perspective, you may have a rider with huge poten-tial and it does not matter whether that rider is from Australia or

the United States, teams simply no longer have the money or the resource to be able to invest into a rider and allow them the luxu-
ry of spending the first twelve months simply learning the tracks. It’s a cruel situation, but that is certainly the way it is now. Eve-
rything has now become more short term, whether that is with the rider contracts or indeed the teams obligations and commit-
ments that they have to sponsors. Years ago most riders would traditionally sign a two year deal and that was the norm, but now
they are very lucky if that deal lasts for twelve months. In years past it would be a two year agreement to bring on and work with
the rider throughout the duration of the contract. Josh Waters would be a very good example here. He’s someone that has
more than proved his credentials and capability to not only ride a bike quickly, but win titles. So you give him a year to adjust,
learn the circuits and adapt to his new surroundings and the second year is to see how he performs. But now, if you’re not
performing as a rider in the first couple of rides, the situation can change very quickly, questions are asked. It’s tough times
for sure, but that is just the way it has gone now and it’s a little unfortunate and can be very harsh.
RST: What makes the Isle of Man TT such a special event for you?
For me the Isle of Man TT is the ultimate test of man and machine. It’s like the Everest of motorcycles and a true test of rider, bike and
team. You have to say that it’s an endurance event in its own right and the demands on both rider and bike do make the race very difficult to
finish. So it’s a huge test and challenge. Also I have always admired the history of the TT especially. The facts that it is the oldest bike race
in the world, it has to be considered as the holy grail of motorcycle racing in my opinion.
RST: Your fellow countryman and RST counterpart Josh Brookes certainly adjusted well to his roads transition in 2013 becoming
the fastest ever newcomer. Do you feel that Josh has a bright fu-ture on the island?
Absolutely without question I would say that Josh is one for the future CA

of the TT and will undoubtedly go on to success. What he achieved this year as a newcomer was so impressive. He’s taken the event very
seriously and there is no doubt in my mind that if he chooses to carry on at the TT he will be in contention to win races on the island of that
there is no question in my mind. I was astounded when I read an inter-view that mentioned Josh had done approximately one hundred and
fifty laps of the course before he had actually ridden the bike competi-tively around the circuit. It just demonstrated his dedication and com-
mitment towards learning about the most challenging of road circuits and he should be commended for that. When I raced on the circuit for
the first time, I had not actually done a complete lap of the TT course and I could not believe that Josh had done so much in his prepara-
tion for the race, but it clearly worked. You have to admire a rider for taking that approach and applying such a high level of commitment.
Josh has also had a brilliant opportunity, taking nothing away from his achievement, but for him to work with a team like Tyco Suzuki, with Philip and Hector Neil is important. They are one of the most successful teams in TT history and having that level of support behind him, as well as being based in the UK, has given Josh an amazing platform to prepare for the race. That level of prepara-tion has really raised the bar for any newcomer and Josh has demonstrated what can be achieved with careful and planned race planning. Good luck to any newcomer that could repeat what he did, because that lap time was so impressive and I take my hat off to Josh for what he achieved in his first year on the island. Also it would be great for Australia as I would love to see another one of my fellow Aussies over on the island getting the results and flying the flag.
RST: What was your first ever TT experience and at what point did you realise that it was something you wanted to do?
In 2004 I came over to the UK to compete in a couple of rounds of the British Championship and had the opportunity to go over to watch the race. I was taken down to Ballagary and was just sitting in someone’s front garden on the inside of the corner. It was the six hundred production race which ran be-fore the senior event that year and when the bikes came though it just blew me away. I was there watching the riders exit the corner and they would brush the hedge, everything would shake and there would be flurry of leaves that get whipped by the draft from the bikes. It was just amaz-ing and immediately I turned to the guys that I was with and said I’ve just got to do this, I really have to give this a try. And that was where it just started for me, knowing that I was go-ing to do the race and compete. I certainly knew a great deal about the Isle of Man TT before-hand because I
grew up with my Grandfather, my Father and my Uncle always talk-ing about this historic special race. To them it was everything and
unfortunately none of them ever got the opportunity to experience the event first hand, but they would read the reports back home,
see the footage from the race and they all talked about it because they raced bikes back in Australia and always said the TT was the
ultimate race for rider and machine. So here I was actually watch-ing the race and thinking about everything I had been told about
the event and knew I was coming back. So the following year, I returned to the island to actually race and rode a six hundred. So
everything happened very quickly.
There is also a side of the Isle of Man where you become a part of racing history through your involvement. I have always been inter-
ested in the history of motorcycle racing and I had a love for clas-sic motorcycles because my father had raced British built bikes.
Growing up and hearing about the history, for me the ultimate bike was the Manx Norton and it was something my father used to tell
me so much about over the years with the G50 Matchless being the ultimate bike. And I truly did not even know the connection
until I went to the island and someone mention the Norton and I said you mean the Manx Norton and they informed me that was
what it was named after. I truly did not know or had made that con-nection. But then again I could say the same about when I did my
first race at Thruxton where I discovered that bikes like Thruxton Triumph and Velocette were named after the circuits. I was just
amazed and thought how cool that the bikes are named after these historic motorcycling meccas. But for me, just someone from lit-
tle old Australia, it had been drummed into me so much just how much of our motorcycle heritage is from Britain. So to be that one
step closer to where it all began really is quite special.
RST: You seemed to enjoy the Classic TT this year. Can you see that as something for the future when you eventually hang
up the RST leathers?
For sure it’s a possibility, but you have to always consider that racing in the classic events takes a lot less commitment and time
than if you’re racing on the modern bike. I have done the Island Classic at Philip Island in Australia and that is one of the biggest
motorcycle races in the country and it’s such a huge event, which I have done now for the last three years and really enjoyed it. The TT
Classic is very similar and while you’re not going there in the same capacity as if you were racing the modern bike, you certainly still
go there as a racer, but at the same time to have fun, be hands on with the bike and working more with team. It’s a lot more relaxed
and not as intense. In saying that, the speeds we were doing at the Classic TT were very impressive and blew me away. It showed just
how hard we were pushing and how much we had to put into rid-ing the bike. It is definitely one hundred per cent commitment, but
certainly it’s more relaxed and you have much more time to enjoy it and appreciate the atmosphere of the island.
RST: Do you have favourite sections of the TT course? If so, which parts and why?
Always interesting, but I have to say that it changes for me each and every year. The lead up to Sign Post corner and the string of left
hand bends is always quite thrilling and enjoyable. Quarry Bends is another particular part of the course that I have always favoured
and then even the more technical sections from the end of Sulby Straight through to Ramsey. But in reality that is such a difficult
ques-t i o n ,
because I enjoy
so much of the course,
which does make it rather
difficult to pin point a particu-
lar section that I favour. Each year,
when you try a dif-ferent setting, you
tend to find that there is another section of
the course where you go well, whereas the previous
year it was not so good. So that then becomes a new
‘best’ section so to speak. But the Isle of Man does evolve
with you as a rider. You never stop learning there and you’re
always finding out new things, each and every time you go round
the circuit. That’s why it is very dif-ficult to perhaps beat a rider like John
(McGuinness) because he has just so much experience and so many laps in the
bank. You think you know the track inside out and then you will find that for example
you come up to a slower rider, which forces you take a slightly different line. As a conse-
quence, you might then hit a bump that you did not know was there and you’ll be out against
the kerb. There is so much on the course where you are finding new things and obviously the track
changes each year anyway, so there’s more learn-ing. That’s what makes it part of the challenge.
RST: Who has been you main inspiration at the Isle of Man TT?
In the years that I have certainly been competing, that would unequivocally be John McGuinness and I would take
my hat off to him. He’s been the rider with the scores on the board. I have the utmost respect for John and for what he’s
achieved. When everyone digs deep at the course, you usu-ally find that John digs deeper. He’s got a very good package
behind him, with a great group of individuals working behind him at Honda. It’s a great bike that John refines ever so slightly each
year, but in part it’s the machine he is so used to and has stuck with over the years. But saying that, John is the one on the controls riding
that bike and he continues to keep pulling the wins out of the bag. It’s been a privilege for me to work with John as a team mate and he’s also
a really great guy. Prior to that, I would have looked at riders like Steve Hislop, who always impressed me with his ability to achieve the results
not only at the Isle of Man and the roads, but also on the short circuits. Steve was a master of being able to do that very successfully and I have
always admired riders who are capable of that achievement. Even a rider like

Carl Fogarty who came over to the compete in the TT while having to contest the short circuits in World Superbike. Those guys have
always impressed me and been quite inspirational because of what they were able to do across the two disciplines.
RST: Have you missed being part of the endurance riding this year?
World endurance was a real breath of fresh air for me over the past few years and something that I have really enjoyed doing. But while
I have missed it this year, at the end of the day I had signed to do it again and then had a complete change of mind. Luckily Honda
certainly understood my position and agreed to release me from the ride. I guess if you have a rider that does not want to do it,
there is no reason to force him down that road. It was just a case of having agreed the ride and then the closer I got to actually do-
ing it, I perhaps saw more clearly how things were going to work and to me it was probably not the direction that I wanted to go. I have missed riding it so much, but I am happy with the decision that I made because it enabled me to spend considerably more time at home and with family which was so important for me this year.
RST: You seem to have a mixture of being very relaxed, followed by intense concentration before a race. How do you prepare for races and are there any special routines that you follow?
In the beginning, I would certainly say that my rou-tine was all about getting as pumped and fired up as possible. I would stick on some Rage Against the Machine and sit down going through those mental preparations that would get you so fired up, you would basically be capable of running through a brick wall. And as the years and experience have progressed, you start to change and perhaps modify your approach. Those early days were perhaps me taking the approach I would have used for short circuit racing which I then carried into the roads. So with the TT, that fired up ‘Rage Against the Machine’ approach is not something that you need at the TT. Believe me, when you are about to launch yourself down Brey Hill at those speeds, you do not need a greater motivator to put you in the required state of mind. You can guarantee that the heart rate starts to increase and your mind quickly puts you in the zone. So now what you will find is that I tend to be more relaxed beforehand and will listen to more mellow tunes like ‘Morchiba’ or some blues. That is so important before a race
like that TT because once you get that helmet on and the visor goes down, the switch is flicked and you’re ready to go out and
truly take on the course. So definitely my approach has changed as to how I prepare for the race. You mature over the years and
you start to know what is right and how to do things. When I was younger, getting so fired up before the race is now some-
thing that I just see as wasted energy. I remember someone once giving me a piece of advice where they said, “stop trying to
kill dead things” and while that saying may resonate with some and not with others, it was something that really helped me out
and stuck in my mind. You see so many young and inexperi-enced riders trying to ‘kill dead things’ and not channelling their
energy in the places it needs to be. It is so important to save your energy for when you really need it and none more so than
at a race like the Isle of Man TT.
RST: Motorcycle racing demands exceedingly high levels of fitness. How do you keep fit between racing and what
would you do during the off season?
Everything that I do at home is fitness oriented, but I always have fun at the same time. I cycle a lot and as much as some
cyclists drive me silly and I don’t class myself as a cyclist, it is something that I do and it’s good for fitness. I live in the hills
and cycling is very popular, but it just gets me that when you pass cyclists every day, nobody ever waves or says hello and
it drives me crazy. But when you’re on the street bike, every motorcyclist waves and acknowledges you whereas the cyclists
don’t. Not sure why and just a little pet hate for my cycling. I also live on a river so really enjoy kayaking a few times each week. I
enjoy swimming and doing a few laps at the pool a few days of the week. Also riding my dirt bike as often as I can is something
I really enjoy and good for fitness and strength. So they are all really fun activities, but at the same time they help me keep in
shape. I am certainly not one of these individuals who goes to the gym every day. That is just not me. And when I’m home, I still work

and just fit my

the work s c h e d u l e .
I always try to eat healthily,
but might have a few beers on the
weekend. Keep it realistic is what I
would always say. It is so important to
have that balance and not go too far overboard.
I chuckle to myself sometimes when you hear
some of these young racers saying that they cannot work
a job because they need to be training every day. And you think
to yourself, you are an elite athlete, but you could still probably work
six hours a day, manage to train and still go racing. You’ve got to find that
balance. I still enjoy going for a beer with the boys and we still go for a
midweek dirt bike ride, then go for a meal at the local pub every Wednesday and
have a couple of beers. It’s good and the balance is the way I like it. But I always take my
racing and fitness very seriously and when I train, I train hard. But I do believe that it’s impor-
tant to have those periods of downtime and that includes having a beer with my mates. I know plenty of
racers who do that and still win races. I don’t think it needs to be all spring water and lettuce leaves.
You need to live a little and after all we are racing motorbikes and not running marathons.
RST: What do you do to relax in your free time away from the bikes?
I’m very lucky where I live and we do try to go up to the lake as often as possible. We love to go there on our own or with
friends and do some water skiing which I enjoy so much. It’s a real get away and it’s just a nice way to hang out after a day skiing,
have a BBQ, some beers and just relax with family and friends. It is quite physically demanding, so it is also good for me with the train-
ing, but it is perhaps the one and only thing that I do, which I really enjoy and it does not revolve around two wheels. So it’s probably the
time when I completely forget about the bike racing.
