PUBLIC HOSTILITY TO RSPCA SEEN IN COMMENTS ON GAVIN GRANTS CLAIMS RE HEYTHROP

Re the Heythrop Hunt again. Comments on news of Gavin Grants statement re not being political Daily Telegraph UK

The animal welfare charity already faces allegations of political bias after spending 326,000 prosecutingmembers of the Heythrop Hunt.

Prime Minister David Cameron is a local MP in the area and had previously ridden with the Heythrop Huntbefore law was changed to ban fox-hunting.

The hunt and its members were fined 6,800 after admitting four charges of unlawfully hunting a wild foxwith dogs. The judge in the case drew attention to the fact that the private prosecution cost nearly 10 timesmore than the defence costs of 35,000.

Mr Grant denied the charity was pursuing a politically motivated case against the Heythrop.

He said: "The RSPCA prosecutes because people break the law in abusing animals. The evidence thatwas brought to us of the Heythrop Hunt's activities showed a very clear pattern of gratuitous, repeated andclearly knowing breeches of the Hunting Act of 2005.----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------Related Articles

There are no political prosecutions by the RSPCA. It could not happen, it would not happenand certainly would not happen under my watch."

    COMMENTSPlatoO'Rly? ..No one believes this.

PalfremanThey are a bunch of bloody liars. Of course it is political. The RSPCA needs closing down. Theyhave just become a semi-respectable front for the ALF and they run paramilitaries, with their fakeuniforms and fake "powers", and pretending to be "officers".

putneycommonThe CEO Grant even self-styles himself as a military general. I lost count how many times he said"on my watch", as if he has been reading too many Tom Clancy novels. They strut about like thegestapo, or the dog-catchers in Tom and Jerry. It would be comical if it were not so eery - they haveno "powers" to issue cautions or investigate people, no more than a neighbourhood watch does. These people's self-righteousness is truly frightening. The new Spanish Inquisition.

paul laingUnbelievable! Strip the RSPCA of its powers to investigate and prosecute and hand these over tothe Police and CPS. The RSPCA can then focus on animal welfare which is what it should be doing. To say the RSPCA has no political agenda is simply disingenuous.

Monro. The RSPCA Chief Executive has spent too long in the Westminster cloister if he thinks that, just becausehe loftily propounds a view, that makes it true. In fact there are many instances of law breaking relating tothe animal welfare act that the RSPCA does not pursue, for one reason or another, as the above quoteclearly demonstrates. The RSPCA also destroys over 3400 perfectly healthy dogs every year for lack offunded facilities to house them. 'Ms Egan-Ravenscroft was branch co-ordinator for the RSPCA Londonregion between 1990 and 2000. She said: Healthy, well-adjusted, re-homeable animals were being

destroyed, and I didnt want to be part of an organisation that did that. The RSPCA has badly lost its wayand all of its reasons for being set up in the first place have been subverted. The grass-roots animal welfareno longer exists.

english_pensionerThe RSPCA prosecute in order to get publicity. Why else would they spend all that money on a hunt inCameron's constituency? Why would the prosecute a man for drowning a squirrel - just for publicity. If ithad been the police, the CPS would have probably decided it was not in the public interest to prosecuteand been content with a warning. When are they going to do something about the cruel Halal slaughter ofanimals for food?

This is more like the Telegraph's comments threads that we all know and love (sic). More misguided and ill-informed RSPCA bashing. Groans and yawns simultaneously.

janglerLooks like you're on your own, Annabel

Pedros143How can it not have political element? The RSPCA have continually gone for soft targets and ignoredsubjects like "Halal" slaughterhouses which even the Royal Veterinary Assoc says are worth ofinvestigation. They should have the current taxpayers safety net removed for lost cases. This wouldconcentrate their minds. A lot of former supporters like me are now working with other organisations thatare not political. Their grass root support is disappearing daily..
