Elisa Cragnolini sponsors equipment for our clinic
RSPCA put out the call to our wonderful supporters to help us achieve more items on
our ‘wish list’ so as to be able to operate more efficiently.
Business woman, RSPCA committee member and proud owner of a 2-year-old
Border Collie named Kobe, Elisa Cragnolini, realises the importance of the work done
by the RSPCA for her pet.
Elisa generously donated K10,000.00 to buy us an orthopedic pack for operating on
fractures and a portable scale for use during home visits.
Opposite: Elisa is pictured with RSPCA Vets Julius Bautista DVM, and Phillip Pablico,
DVM, and the animal scale that she sponsored.
Earlier this year, the RSPCA of PNG held a fundraising
event to raise money for equipment needed for our
clinic. We were overjoyed with the support we received
from business houses and individuals. Amongst the
businesses that came to our aid, Red Sea Housing PNG
sponsored the cost of a new suction unit and a diagnos-
tic operating set. The value of the equipment totalled
over K5,000.00. Red Sea Housing PNG has, over the
past three years, progressively supported the RSPCA by
attending our fundraising events and donated whirly
birds and roofing materials for our cattery, as well as
rebuilding our huge cat tower.
Site Manager of Red Sea Housing PNG, Grant Kitchen,
said, “The reason Red Sea support the RSPCA, and
other community based organisations in PNG is be-
cause of the effort put in by the people in those or-
ganisations to help and give something back to the local
community. It is nice to see the care and effort shown
here by the RSPCA in a very harsh environment for
animals and we are more than happy to give a hand
where we can to make improvements to the facility.”

Red Sea Housing PNG, RSPCA Vet Julius Bautista, DVM,
and Red Sea Housing PNG Managing Director, Kenneth
Clinton. All smiles over the new suction unit and the
diagnostic operating set.

Equipment sponsored by kind hearted people
In a joint sponsorship to help the RSPCA get a much needed blood
pressure machine, The Kiwi Club and Kirsty Laird combined their dona-
tions to purchase this K9,000.00 machine. With such generosity we are
able to provide yet another service for our furry friends.
Pictured opposite are our new head vet, Jessica Hoopes, DVM (centre),

Laird. With the support of the community and individuals who share
our vision, the RSPCA is able to continue to carry out the work we do in
a challenging environment.

RSPCA’s Adoption Program helps many
pets get the second chance they deserve
The RSPCA of PNG acknowledges the support of all
our sponsors, supporters, members and volunteers.
Thank you for helping us continue our work to prevent
cruelty against all creatures, great and small.
The RSPCA of PNG runs a shelter which houses over 50 animals (mainly
cats and dogs) at any one time. The shelter is maintained through the sup-
port we receive from the clinic and from kind-hearted members of the com-
munity who generously donate and/or sponsor various items throughout the
year with money, useful items and precious time.
The shelter has been rehoming animals since the early 80s. All pets that go
through our adoption program are medically treated for internal and exter-
nal parasites, neutered and vaccinated prior to joining their new families.
Our clinic staff and volunteers work together to exercise and socialise the
pets. Cats are trained to use a litter tray and socialised with other cats. Dogs
are socialised and exercised whilst wearing collars and walking on leads.
Clinic staff work extra hard to rehabilitate those who have been rescued
from distressing situations.
Current statistics show there are 21 cats and 36 dogs on our adoption pro-
gram. The cats are housed at our clinic, located on the corner of Kunai
Street and Waigani Drive at Hohola, whilst the dogs are kept at the Port
Moresby Animal Pound (located on Varahe Street at Gordons).
Our members and supporters have worked hard behind the scenes in
spreading the message and promoting our adoption program. Through their
efforts we have been able to find suitable new environments for hundreds of
cats and dogs.
Over the years we have also had the unwavering support of HiTRON who,
on a weekly basis, ran a slideshow on their channel one, featuring photo-
graphs and information of fur babies who need good homes.
The National newspaper came on board in 2016 and dedicates a 3/4 weekly
page (in their homes and property section/pull out) to featuring the dogs and
cats on our adoption program.
Haus Ples Real Estate Show has also shown their support and sponsored us a
stall at their annual Real Estate Show, which usually takes place in June, giving
us the opportunity to talk with the general public about our clinic.
Earlier this year, Pascoe Events & Marketing and Eat Drink Port Moresby,
the organisers of the popular POM City Markets, have sponsored us a stall
every month and allowed the RSPCA to bring along fur babies. The event
works well for the pets, who get a chance to have a nice day out and meet
(potentially) their new for-ever families.
Our monthly newsletter and up-dates on our website contribute to finding
homes for our furry friends.
Lovable Bino (pictured on left and
right) came to our shelter with
mange. Over a few months, he was
cured and successfully re-homed in
2017.
Pictured on the right is Bino with his
new owner and family.
Pictured on the left are volunteers spending time with
one of our shelter dogs. Volunteers help our adoption
program by socialising and exercising the animals. We
welcome volunteers and would love to see more
people join up.

Student from the Pacific Adventist University spent three days volunteering at our clinic. Their volunteer
duties included assisting with filing administration documents, cleaning the kennels and painting our
fence at the Port Moresby Animal Pound.
Pictures below show the group at work in cleaning the graffiti off the beautiful mural painted on our
fence at the clinic. And the end result of their paint-ing the brick wall at the Port Moresby Animal
Pound.
We are lucky to have such help and welcome more
volunteers.
Thought for the month
Canine oral papilloma’s, also known as oral
warts, are small, benign tumors of the mouth
caused by the papilloma virus. They are
found on the lips, gums, mouth, and in rare
cases can also be located on other mucous
membranes.
Causes of papilloma virus in dogs
Canine oral papilloma’s usually affect young
dogs, under the age of 2. Young dogs are
more susceptible to the papilloma virus be-
cause their immune system is not fully devel-
oped. As their immune system matures, they
produce antibodies against the virus and the
warts can eventually disappear. Affected
dogs can transmit the virus to other dogs
through direct contact. This usually occurs
when they greet each other, share toys, or
eat/drink out of the same food or water
bowl. Canine papilloma virus is species-
specific and therefore cannot be transmitted
from dogs to humans or cats.
Treatment of papilloma virus in dogs:
Since canine oral papilloma’s are usually
asymptomatic, treatment is often not indicated
unless they become infected or become symp-
tomatic. Infected papilloma’s can be painful
and require a course of antibiotics. Occasional-
ly, a dog will have so many growths that eating
becomes problematic. When this occurs, the
papilloma’s can be surgically excised or treated
with cryotherapy (freezing). Another treatment
involves crushing the lesions to stimulate the
host immune system to attack them. In hu-
mans, interferon has been used in severe cas-
es but this treatment is costly and has provided
mixed results with dogs. Most cases of canine
oral papilloma’s go away on their own within 1-
5 months as the affected dog’s immune system
matures and mounts a response to the virus.
So while it’s true that kissing can spread coot-
ies, at least in the case of oral papilloma’s they
typically resolve on their own. If you notice any
strange looking growths in your dog’s mouth or
lips, take your dog to your veterinarian to
ensure they are canine oral papilloma’s and not
something more serious.

We were pleasantly surprised by a visit from the NCD
City Manager, Bernard Kipit. He was taken on a tour of
our facilities and was impressed with our set-up, which
includes a surgery, hospital and shelter. We are happy
to continue working in partnership with the National
Capital District Commission. We have successfully
maintained the pound facilities for the past 12 years
and appreciate the support of the NCDC.

Manager, Hellen White, and NCD City Manager, Bernad Kipit.
Our education program started in
2009, specifically designed for
primary and elementary school level.
Over the past three years, we have
extended our awareness activities to
include high schools, youth &
community groups & vocational
schools within the National
Capital District.
Earlier this year, our education
team went to talk with students from the Port
Moresby National High School. The team
presented information about our organisation,
highlighting our adoption program, clinic
functions and stray animal collection.
The students found the presentation
interesting and were intrigued by the
amount of work that the RSPCA of
PNG does. Questions were asked about
our approach to cases of animal abuse
and neglect.
