Royal Palm Friends ($250-$499) James W. McLamore Society

The James W. McLamore Society recognizes annual leadership gifts of $1,000 or more to the University of Miami. Originally called the President’s Circle when it was founded in 1994, the McLamore Society was renamed in 2013 to honor the legacy of the former UM Board of Trustees chair and South Florida businessman whose name is synonymous with philanthropy and service.

James W. McLamore, the co-founder of Burger King, was dedicated to promoting education in the community. His impact at the University as chair of the Board of Trustees from 1980 to 1990 and chair of a historic $517.5 million fundraising campaign from 1984 to 1989 is immeasurable. His leadership and tradition of generous support, which spanned nearly 30 years, played an important role in shaping the University of Miami of today.

For more information on the James W. McLamore Society, please contact the University of Miami Office of Annual Giving at 305-284-9200 or [email protected].

Peter Chaibongsai, M.A. 2007

We welcome the addition of Peter Chaibongsai, M.A. 2007, to the RSMAS Alumni Association Board. Peter is the Director of Science and Policy for The Billfish Foundation (TBF), a non-profit organization, solely dedicated to the conservation of billfish populations worldwide.

Peter oversees TBF’s conservation programs and focuses his work on educating and advocating for billfish conservation. He received his Bachelor of Arts in Marine Affairs and Policy with a concentration in Aquaculture from UM in 2000 and came back, as a RSMAS fellowship recipient, to receive a Masters in Marine Affairs and Policy in 2007.

Peter is expecting his first child any day now, and we are excited to welcome this new edition to the RSMAS family!

Join us for a trip to our research station, just 45 minutes by boat from the RSMAS campus! We will be kayaking, snorkeling, and enjoying lunch on the key. After lunch, join RSMAS alumnus and professor, Dr. Neil Hammerschlag, for shark tagging! To find out more about Dr. Hammerschlag’s shark tagging research, go to rjd.miami.edu/research/projects/gps-for-sharks. Bring bathing suits, bug spray, and sunscreen! A cost of $25 will be associated with this trip to cover lunch and transportation to and from the island. An additional $75 will secure a spot on the shark tagging trip with Neil. Limited to 30 people, first come first serve. Normally this trip costs around $300/person, so take advantage of this opportunity!

Last year’s Alumni Weekend was a huge success, and we look forward to making this year even more exciting! The highlight was clearly the trip to Broad Key.

“Getting there by boat was a great start of the day. Immediately after arriving I felt very welcomed and relaxed. The place has plenty for all kinds of experiences, from aquatic activities, walking paths, relaxing in a hammock or playing in the pool, and a fantastic view from the second floor. But it was the people from RSMAS, their friendliness and great knowledge of the environment and the surroundings which gave me a truly enjoyable experience!” -- Jaime Orozco, 2012 participan
