Well, it’s certainly been an interesting three and a bit years hasn’t it!

As my tenure as President draws to a close I’d prefer to think about the Society going forward rather than looking back over those ‘interesting’ times. We have had a unique opportunity to re-visit where the Society is and more importantly its future direction. I laid out my views in my ‘The RSGB of the Future’ article and I hope you can see we are already moving in those directions

The Society is in a much better place 2010. The introduction of the Interim Board (IB) was crucial to our success and I’d like, at the outset, to thank each member of the IB for their outstanding work. All of what the IB has done in the last 15 months has been about putting in place the foundations and processes that will take the Society forward.

We are about a third through our Centenary year and already we have seen something of a continuous celebration through the Centenary station that I had the privilege of opening on New Year’s Day. That celebration is set to continue and have several high points throughout the year. The weekend of our Anniversary already has several events planned that will meet the differing interests within our hobby.

I am delighted that HRH Duke of Edinburgh has been invited to our Bletchley Park. I very much hope that he will be able to be with us on the day.

With something for everyone – and a

Centenary Dinner to conclude – I encourage you to be there if you can. For more information on the Anniversary Day events and the round-up of Centenary matters, see page 13 and the advert on page 12.

R S G B

Radio Society of Great Britain

Under the revised Memorandum, Article & Bylaws, the following have been appointed $$#%"'is from the 2013 AGM. In order to ensure a smooth transition, these directors have been co-opted to the Interim Board.

Graham Murchie, G4FSGCURRICULUM VITAE: Founder Chairman (now President) of Martlesham Radio Society, Chairman, RSGB Microwave Committee, Microwave Beacon Co-ordinator for 30 years (2012 RSGB

Fraser Shepherd Award), Treasurer, UK Microwave Group, Chairman, EME2012 Organising Committee, Various roles with BT including. Development of early 11GHz terrestrial digital links. Programme Manager for all Customer Facing systems (>£100M pa spend). General Manager, IP Systems - responsible for the IP network in the UK. Board member, BT Networks. Strategy Director focussed on the long term development of BT’s R&D facilities including working with Local Authorities & Regional Development Agency

CEO, SO man software start-up company, Non-executive Director of start up company, Non-executive Board member of a DEFRA Agency.

PERSONAL STATEMENT. The future of Amateur Radio and the RSGB lies with this country’s young people and this must be our focus. As a schoolboy, Amateur Radio *_#'#wish to put something back into the hobby *$#'%;many youngsters today are guided towards science and engineering by our activities?

?{licensed as G8AXU, I am operational on all bands from 50MHz to 10GHz and I am well aware of the continuing need to maintain and protect ALL of our frequencies from VLF to 250GHz.

I had a long, senior level career in BT mostly spent trouble-shooting and looking for solutions ‘outside the box’. I have also been a CEO of a 50 man start-up software company and held several other board level roles. I do have the relevant business and leadership experience although I fully recognise that the RSGB’s main objectives should be about Amateur Radio.

I have been Chairman of the RSGB Microwave Committee and also Martlesham Radio Society during a successful period of contest operation. I chaired the Organising Committee of EME2012, which proved a

*}:%The RSGB must now develop and

implement its new strategies and core values in a way that ensures the participation – and retention – of the younger generation as well as our more experienced amateurs. The youngsters will be the future of this country and should also be the future of the Society.

Dr John Rogers, M0JAVCURRICULUM VITAE. PhD from Imperial College London, postdoc in DSP at Adelaide Uni. Technical, Projects, Operations, Managing Director of Racal Subsidiaries for 22 years. Products I designed

won four Queens awards for Technology/Export Achievement. Final posting was as Engineering Director for Thales Australia with 900 reporting engineers. Currently retired, volunteer activities include STEM ambasador, Treasurer of a wildlife /recreational area, vice chairman of village neighbourhood planning group.

In radio, Secretary of Hinckley ARES, lead tutor for training, DRM for Leicestershire, now DRM North Notts / Derbyshire. Interim AROS coordinator; Chairman of EMC committee; leadership team representative for website Content Management Group.

PERSONAL STATEMENT. I have been promoting Amateur Radio, working with +;>7+DRM in East Midlands. I have conducted training for all levels, run workshops/give talks for clubs on antennas and on SDR, *##+$7+and participate in contests. I founded British Inland Waterways on the Air (BiWota) and have used my technical background and lobbying experience in support of work of AROS and EMCC.

To grow amateur radio must sell itself effectively to potential recruits; each attracted by different parts of the hobby. My ambition would be to build on the social side, harnessing modern networking media alongside traditional mechanisms to develop and promote activities on both the operating and technical aspects. We must harness the energy of clubs and other groups to share =$%@by continuing development both of personal skills and of the services provided by the society can we enhance the attraction and rewards of the hobby.

Another critical area is the continuing evolution of strategy to meet the changing needs of our members and capabilities of their equipment. Then the effective

implementation of objectives to guide the staff, the volunteers and members to enhance the hobby and their enjoyment.

I hope to use my love of the hobby and my experience from board level involvement (both strategic, managerial and technical) in global leading electronics companies in the UK, Europe and internationally to help the RSGB achieve our aims.

Len Paget, GM0ONXCURRICULUM VITAE. Licensed in 1982 as GM6JIC I became GM0OMX in 1991, operating, homebrew construction and DX hunting when it’s not too much of an effort. I am an

occasional author for Practical Wireless and author of the RSGB Planning Guide.

Currently I am the Regional Manager for Region 1 and past Chairman of the Planning Advisory Committee. I have also served the RSGB as a DRM and as past Secretary of the Kilmarnock and Loudoun Amateur Radio Club and Ayrshire RAYNET.

By profession I am a Network and Lighting Manager for a Local Authority Roads Department.

PERSONAL STATEMENT. The past 18 months have been an unsettling time for the Society and its members. Many of the volunteers we so much rely on have felt disenfranchised by the way recent events have been handled and a sizable part of the membership still feel their views are not considered. Whilst it would be impossible to meet the wishes of all of our members all of the time, our interests in Amateur Radio are just too diverse, we need to rally round those things that we can agree on for the Society to grow.

Membership in recent years has fallen and to address this we need to make use of our biggest asset, our existing members. We need ‘members to get members’ regardless of their age and make RSGB membership something new members are proud of.

I am currently the Network and Lighting Manager for a Local Authority Roads Department and have been the Chairman and founding Director of HiLight Services Ltd, a Company Limited by Guarantee set up to manage the assets of a street lighting management software owned by a number of local authorities, the membership and 7#@+<'and Chairman of the Institution of Lighting Professionals.

I believe that I have the necessary amateur radio and management skills required as a Board Member and work well as part of a team.

WELCOME

The RSGB would like to welcome to the RSGB family the following new Members who have joined their voice to ours and are helping to keep the RSGB strong.

The RSGB would like to welcome back the following members who have rejoined the Society.

Under the revised Memorandum, Articles and Byelaws approved at the 2012 EGM there is provision for three nominated Directors to be appointed by the membership. The candidates have been selected by the Nominations Committee (NomCom), and Members will be asked to endorse their selections at the AGM. The current membership of the NomCom is

Dave Wilson, M0OBWBob Whelan, G3PJTJohn McCullagh, GI4BWMMark Harper, MW1MDHRupert Thorogood, G3KKT

It is the intention that a proportion of the board membership will retire each year and thus the task for the NomCom in #'two, nominated directors each year from a list of potential candidates that has been built up over time and through a series of comprehensive discussions with suitably #>+''%"built up of candidates having skills which would lead to a properly balanced board. If you are planning to attend the 2013 AGM at the IET in London, please would you indicate your attendance on the RSGB website, www.rsgb.org/attendagm, so that we can gauge numbers. A sandwich lunch is available (costing £5) and you can book your ticket on the website and purchase on the day.

We are always looking for interesting amateur radio photographs for the RSGB website, brochures and posters that the Society produces. Over the next few months we will be holding a series of competitions to gather a number of photographs to #%"is Field Days & Special Event Stations and the closing date for entries is 31 May 2013. To submit your entry, please visit www.rsgb.org/ radcom/photocompetition. Pictures should be *$*'*Vand 2MB. NEW 2E SERIES MANAGER. After a short delay we now have a new volunteer for the 2E series. Ray Maltby, 2E1DFI has kindly offered his services. He’s recently retired and says he’s ready for a new challenge. He may just have found it as the 2E series is one of our largest and most active groups. All cards and envelopes have been transferred and Ray is likely to be kept busy for a while as he settles in.

MM SERIES CHANGES. This month our thanks go to Mike Clark, GM6OFO, long-time manager of the MM0A-L group, which is being transferred to Brian Shearer, MM1HMV. Brian already covers the other MM groups in Scotland and it will certainly help us at the central bureau to now ship everything to one location. Mike retains his GM5-8 group, all other cards and envelopes have been transferred to Brian.

2 LETTER CALLSIGNS G3 & G4. The numbers of 3 & 4 series 2-letter calls is now very small, with fewer than 20 in the 3 and not many more in the 4 series. Most are re-issues or club calls and not all are active. Sadly, our increasing workload makes sorting them individually no longer practical in the main bureau. The problem is being resolved by transferring these few calls back to the mainstream 3 letter managers. Cards and envelopes are being moved over this month to the respective managers, whose details appear on the website and in the current Yearbook. Paul Pasquet, G4RRA, who has handled this small band of illustrious calls for some years will continue to manage the G5+2 letter series, as before.

TIMELY REMINDER. G1& G2 sub manager Anthony Nowell, RS94177, tells us that many of his users are running low on envelopes. He is unable to post some older envelopes with money value stamps as they now under value. Bureau advice is to use a C5 sized envelope with second class stamps as these offer best value and remain valid, if rates change.

UPDATED YOUR QRZ.COM ENTRY LATELY? QRZ.com is a wonderful resource but some amateurs and clubs don’t update their details and, unwittingly, leave us with a growing problem. Many entries still show ‘QSL via bureau OK’ others say nothing or have confusing information. What does yours say? Please help us by writing a clear statement of your QSL policy at the top of your biography and check the entry of your club or a friend too.

COST OF QSLING. A DXER’S DILEMMA. Recently a one-man DXpedition contacted us for advice. He told us that QSLing everyone direct was costing him around £1,000 per trip and it is something he can’t sustain. A small number of operators really want his card and QSL direct sending two dollars, others use the OQRS request system but, of course, the system and PayPal take a percentage. E-QSL is OK but not good for all awards purposes and he really likes stations to have a genuine, high quality card. If you think there is a magic solution, please let us know but, in the meantime, a mix of options was our best advice.

Volunteer vacanciesThe RSGB EMC committee provides the following services to Members: help with EMC issue by lobbying and representation on Standards Committees and also publishing information & technical updates. If you have any EMC expertise you can offer to help us provide an outstanding service to RSGB Members in any of these areas, please contact [email protected] or call 07836 731 544.

The RSGB EMC Committee has been operating a team of EMC technical advisors for some years. There are at present 25 advisors who assist members experiencing EMC problems. Help is given by telephone or e-mail. The EMC Committee is now looking for a coordinator for this team of advisors to be the interface between them and the EMC Committee. The position is open to all RSGB Members who have EMC experience.

The coordinator will oversee the investigation of reports of EMC interference caused to or by amateur radio and

■ provide a reply to all enquiries / problem reports promptly (within three days),

allocate an advisor and follow up to ensure timely detailed response

■ gather / examine reports from advisors. Maintain a summary of EMC problems, incorporating current status and advice given. Document trends and note any emerging technologies which may be of concern

■ escalate priority when requested to do so■ be accountable to and supported by the

EMC Committee. Prepare reports to them in person, or by Skype three times a year.

■ maintain records of advisors and actively seek to recruit members to the team

■ make regular contact with advisors to motivate and assist

■ assist in compiling diagnostic advice for common problems

■ have patience and diplomatic skills■ be willing to abide by the RSGB’s Code of

ConductIf you are interested in the role of Coordinator please contact [email protected] by 15 April. John Rogers, M0JAV, EMC Chairman.

To many radio amateurs, Pat Hawker, G3VA, is most well known for his long-running Technical Topics column in RadCom. But his life was so much more*.

John Patrick Hawker was born on 5 April 1922, the youngest of four children. It was #*#'interested in radio and he bought copies of Amateur Wireless (later to become Practical Wireless) and Wireless Magazine amongst others. This started him building crystal sets, #'$V#'$%By 1935, he had progressed to a 2-valve short wave TRF receiver. Using this radio he #'###'V%wasn’t long before he discovered the 40m amateur band and listened to British stations talking to each other.

After starting a radio club at school, he $## '#Vhe couldn’t hold a licence in his own name. ;*@VQ};%@$#Jreceived the callsign G3VA and it was around this time that he started writing for technical '*##*T & R Bulletin+'$JV%

The following year he received a letter '#+# *#be prepared to so some voluntary work for *'%@**@Secrets Act, he joined the ranks of the Voluntary Interceptors (VI). In this role his #;>@#operator was given a list of signals to listen for. In 1944, Pat joined a new unit, SCU9, a small mobile unit headed to Normandy after D-Day. Pat was in Normandy until August

1944 before being sent to other parts of Europe as communications needs dictated.

In 1947, he joined the RSGB staff and learnt much about technical writing, going *#VV%;worked on various technical books including Radio & Television Servicing and transferred to Electronics Weekly in the 1960s. The RSGB Bulletin$VQcontained a legend in the making. It was $$""$written by Pat Hawker, G3VA. The new column aimed to “survey a few ideas from the amateur radio press of the world; a few hints and tips that have come to our notice, with perhaps an occasional comment thrown in for good measure”. Pat wrote the column for the next 50 years until he stepped down, $//Q'*'//'#'ideas. Pat Hawker MBE, G3VA1922-2013

I, too, am deeply saddened to learn of the death of Pat Hawker, G3VA. As a tribute, may I recount the souvenir of my one and only personal encounter with Pat.

In 1965, as a young electronics editor on the staff of an international aviation magazine here in Geneva, I was one of *$#Angeles to publicise the planned launch #communications satellite, Early Birdgreat excitement for a 27-year old who had never been to the USA before. For this special occasion I bought a rather expensive and distinctive Samsonite %Angeles, tired but with the adrenaline _*#'#%@'totally battered and looking as if it had years of travel behind it. Consternation!

It was immediately claimed by another journalist. Then, to my immense relief, '#+'mine! The other suitcase belonged to Pat, who was representing a UK electronics magazine. The opportunity to talk was too good to miss, so we sat and chatted during many of the presentations and sumptuous meals our hosts laid on for us.

+#ago, I have lived my professional career and am now, at 75, living still in Geneva '%J'RSGB, I followed Pat’s regular column in the ‘Bull’ and RadCom and possess the CD put out on his retirement from journalism.

But I shall always recall that memorable encounter in California half a century ago. Vale Pat.

BiWota 2013

British Inland Waterways on the air (BiWota) brings together the users of the canals and rivers in the UK

who are amateur radio enthusiasts. Two events are planned so far this summer. On 13 to 18 June, GB2BCN will be operating from the Pelsall Canal Festival on the Wyrley and Essington Canal, part of the Birmingham Canal Navigations. The festival celebrates the 200 year old canals that thread the large plateau of land forming the UK West Midlands. GB2BCN will accompany the 100 or so narrow boats that will rally together at the Festival. Further are details on the QRZ.com pages for GB2BCN and G8CQH.

Then, 19 to 21 July sees the National Waterways festival at Cassiobury Park on the Grand Union Canal at Watford. This weekend will &/V#hope to have more stations on the air than the 44 achieved for the launch event in 2011. Stations wishing to participate should consult the BiWota site at www.biwota.org and use the forums to register their intentions. BiWota is looking for someone to run a SES from a boat or caravan at the festival in Watford. If you are interested, please contact John, M0JAV via e-mail to [email protected].

implemented. The creation of the Leadership Team comprising all Committee Chairs, the >*'##;@is intended to allow the Board to have direct input from some of the key volunteers involved in running the RSGB.

STRATEGY. Drawing on the input from members, the IB prepared a strategy for the future development of the RSGB and UK amateur radio. This strategy provides a framework for future Society investment and activity, at the same time encouraging responsiveness to a changing world.

Operational Plan'>+##operational plan formulated on a fundamental (zero-base) review of all of the Society’s operations - Membership services, commercial, publications, examinations and regulatory. This plan has been agreed and implementation is in progress.

Why is the Operational Plan important? It is important because it provides a focus for all the RSGB’s resources, allowing it to work towards agreed goals. In this way the limited resources at the Society’s disposal (including the many volunteers) are used to best effect. The Society has set itself a challenging programme and encourages more members to play an active part by volunteering in some capacity or other.

Financial"#'##with tight discipline. Previously, some ###>+##getting key areas of income and expenditure #%"#*'$'>+$report. The key income areas of membership subscriptions, book sales and advertising have all come under close scrutiny. It is the IB’s intention that with the correct allocation of income, costs and overheads, all RSGB activities should show a surplus.

Why is a surplus necessary? Simply $* the RSGB, a surplus on ordinary operations is necessary to allow for investment in new member services. The result this year is particularly pleasing coming after the #%"$enabled the replenishment of reserves and will now allow investments in new systems.

HQ managementA key task for the IB was to recruit a new General Manager. This was completed in May 2012 with the appointment of Graham Coomber, G0NBI.

In order to allow a better quality service to be offered to the membership in line with current best practice, a detailed assessment

#*$*#of IT systems would be needed. Careful planning for this has taken place in 2012, contractors have been selected and it is expected that most IT systems will be upgraded during 2013.

PublicationsRadCom is seen as one of the best amateur radio publications in the world. The panel which determines periodicals strategy has been strengthened and revitalised. Plans to offer RadCom in digital format have raised a number of important issues on copyright which at the moment have not been resolved. Many newcomers have asked for a new $$'#they start to establish and build their amateur radio systems. In January 2013 the RSGB launched two initiatives, one a web-based '# #a ‘Getting started in …’ series in RadCom. At the same time there is an active search for advanced topics at the leading edge of amateur radio technology.

The Society is in the beta test stage of a new website which will enable the RSGB to offer a number of new information resources to the Membership.

BooksDespite the ready availability of online information resources there still remains a demand for amateur radio specialist publications. The Society continues to commission and publish a wide range of paper-based publications for members and the market generally. It continues to keep under review the options for electronic publishing and will embark on this when the time and technologies are right.

Licence ExaminationsOver 2012 all three examinations have shown growth. 1,593 Foundation candidates passed, an increase of 2%, 695 Intermediate candidates, an increase of 9% and most heartening of all, 348 Advanced candidates, an increase of 22%. Congratulations to all those concerned. The RSGB recognises the efforts of the tutors, club training courses and examination facilities, which have led to these results. New examination software is now on test and will shortly become fully operational. The RSGB continues to work with the Radio Communications Foundation (RCF) to ensure the integrity of the examination system as is required by Ofcom.

Membership Recruitment and RetentionSince membership subscriptions are the main source of income, the IB has looked closely at membership numbers. At December 2012 membership of the Society was 20,425 (2011 20,842). Earlier large falls in membership have been arrested but membership numbers are still slowly

declining, partly as a result of the ageing membership but also because of those losing interest in amateur radio. From our data, it is clear that there is no single reason why members lose interest and that the RSGB is not the only organisation facing this problem. Looking closely at the retention ''$$*'*#2 years of membership. The IB has therefore '$'#$*#''#two years of membership.

At the same time the Operational Plan contains actions to address the target ' ##Strategic Plan. In these ways the IB has initiated a series of actions to start the process of growing the membership of the Society and UK amateur radio in general.

National Radio CentreThe NRC became operational in February 2012 and was formally opened by Ed Vaizey, Minister in the Department of Culture, Media and Sport, in the summer. Early reactions from visitors have been positive and in the last 5 months of the year almost 4,000 visitors passed through. The Society is now building a working relationship with the Bletchley Park Trust which will allow it to become an integral part of the Trust’s activities and particularly its schools programme.

On-the-Air Initiatives During 2012 the RSGB facilitated two on-the-air initiatives – the Queen’s Jubilee, and the Olympics. In both cases a good working relationship with Ofcom enabled members #$$=#@'$and Paralympic games, also enabled the Society, working with Ofcom, to minimise any spectrum disruption associated with meeting the needs of the Games.

The RSGB Centenary in 2013 has taken a great deal of planning and organising and it is hoped that Members will enter into the spirit of the occasion and actively support the various activities planned.

The Society continued to administer contests on HF, VHF & UHF for its Members.

ClubsClubs are the social life blood of amateur radio, providing the local contact with newcomers, training and running examinations. Clubs also organise lectures for their members, as well as a variety of social events and rallies.

So a key question for the IB has been “How can the RSGB encourage clubs to #*¢"a focus for the Society in the coming years and the IB welcomes closer engagement with clubs to help them, and UK amateur

R S G B

Radio Society of Great Britain

Guidance for Voting 86th RSGB Annual General Meeting

20 April 2013You have ONE of three options for registering your vote on each Resolution:

1. ATTEND THE AGM IN PERSON. You will not need your ballot paper but you should bring with you copies of the Resolutions and the CVs of the prospective Directors/President.

or

2. BY POST. The voting is being conducted by the Electoral Reform Service (ERS) on behalf of the Society. The proxy form and return envelope can be found in this edition of RadCom. The details required on the proxy form are your name, address, callsign or RS number AND your membership number. This can be found on your RadCom mailing wrapper or by enquiry from HQ. This is a security measure required by the ERS. Once you have voted (see below), place the completed ballot paper in the pre-paid envelope and post it to the ERS to arrive on or before 12 noon on 18 April 2013.

or

3. BY INTERNET. Go to www.votebyinternet.com/RSGB13. You will be asked for your membership number without the leading zeros$V###**$#*JVJJVJ%7>+?#''*VJ/V%"*V18 April 2013. See below for details of how to cast your vote.

HOW TO CAST YOUR VOTE BY POST OR INTERNET:

If you do not enter the name of a proxy holder, your vote will be cast by the Chairman of the meeting in accordance with your wishes indicated on the voting form. Alternatively you can assign your vote as a proxy to another nominated individual. If you take up this ##$=#'J%

If you leave the instruction on how to vote blank, your choice of proxy holder may vote as he/she wishes. Although provision for a withheld vote (“Abstain”) does not appear in the Society’s Articles it is now common. So if you are assigning your proxy and do not vote for or against, you can elect to abstain, which is also binding on your proxy holder.

'!' has seen recent success when Dave, M6DEJ, Mike, M6CKR, Chris and Craig, M6CTR passed their Foundation exam. They can be seen in the photo with their instructor Jason, M0JDM.

This year is the 50th anniversary of Salop ARS and they plan to celebrate in a number of ways, including a dinner for members past and present. GB5OSR will be used on shack nights as much as possible. They would like to ask if anyone has any photos or memorabilia about SARS over the last 50 years, and if they would loan it for a display at the dinner. Please contact Tammy, M6OEN, via [email protected].

Grey Point Fort ARS is a newly formed society who regularly operate with the callsigns of GB0GPF, MN0GPF and

GN0URN. Grey Point Fort is a WWI coastal defence fort on the south shore of Belfast Lough, 13 miles east of Belfast city,

Some 16 members of Glos RAYNET covered the safety and communications aspects of the annual walk that takes place from Gloucester.

The 12, 18 and 36 mile routes on the hills were tackled in cold but clear conditions by 250 Scouts and Guides of all ages, with no serious incidents. Members provided both voice and APRS coverage from course minibuses, Land Rover rescue vehicles and manned shifts in the main and alternate control centres through the night until 10am the following morning alongside the event organisers.

Riverway ARS will be operating

four special event stations in conjunction with the ROC 700 (Royal Observer Corps) event between 1 and 10 June to commemorate the work of the Seaborne Observers during the D-Day landings in France in 1940. During the Cold War of the 1960s some 1500 nuclear bunkers where built and manned by members of the ROC until 1995 when they where disbanded. The four Bunker stations are GB6GNB Gonsall, GB1SNB Shenstone, GB0RNB Rugeley and GB4SNB Standon, all located in the Staffordshire area. The stations will operate on some of the days through the week and both weekends. Details are on www.qrz.com.

GB0GPF, MN0GPF and GN0URN will be working on all HF bands between 10m to 80m using SSB and PSK (plus CW if they can wake an old timer!). At the annual dinner of Bangor and District ARS the Chairman, Keith, GI0SSA, presented Richard, GI4DOH, with the GI0WVN Memorial Key. This was in recognition of the 18,000 CW contacts Richard made in 2012. He had set himself a target of 1,000 QSOs a month and surpassed this by several thousand!

At the Hilderstone Radio Club meeting on Valentine’s day, the chairman John Hislop praised the achievements of Patrick, M0ZPK and Matthew, M0LMK on passing their Advanced exam. Newcomers Ryan (13) and slightly older Lee, M6AYS were welcomed to the club, both are keen to take part in the training courses. The club had a great success with the Ramsgate Lifeboat SOS Radio event, raising £365 for the RNLI, in part thanks to the London Array for their donation of £200. Six members of the club are involved in the Margate GEEK show, demonstrating the Raspberry

Pi and Arduino. They are John, G7OHO, Patrick, M0ZPK, Ian, M0CAG, Matthew, M0LMK, Denis Kirkden and Danny Day. Arrangements for the special event for the centenary of the RSGB have also been launched with a rota for radio operators.

In order to support the Advanced amateur radio distance learning course run by Steve Hartley, G0FUW, Chelmsford ARS will be holding an Advanced exam session. It will take place on Monday, 1 July at 7pm in Danbury Village Hall, CM3 4NQ. The exam session is open to anyone who has passed the Intermediate exam, not just those on the distance learning course. Those wishing to sit the Advanced exam at Chelmsford should contact Clive, G1EUC on 01245 224 577. The club is now holding Morse classes every Thursday evening. Run by Andrew Kersey, G0IBN, the classes have proved very popular. The classes are held in the function room at the The Bell Bar and Bistro in Danbury, CM3 4DT. Those interested should contact Andrew, G0IBN, on 01621 868 347.

Russ Stewart, G8BHH/G4PBP (1949-2013)The VHF ‘Voice of the West Midlands’ became a silent key on 15 February after a long illness.

#*'* '>May 1976 on 70cm SSB. A few months later we met at a talk given by the late Alan Wakeman, G3EEZ, at Stafford Polytechnic. Alan’s talk on microwaves enthused Russ and myself and we went on to make many 10GHz contacts over the years and over increasing distances. Backing all of this were regular contacts on many other amateur bands.

Russ operated all bands from HF to 10GHz. Not one to do things by halves, Russ had the best equipment and antenna systems, for each band, that he could build or afford. He made good use of that equipment. You could always hear G4PBP (Golf Four Peter Baker Peter) calling the DX during any opening. He had worked a formidable number of locator squares on VHF through 10GHz, although he always said he didn’t count locator squares!

As G8BHH, Russ was the leader of the very successful Wulfrun Contest Group that operated from Beacon Hill in Wales, using the callsign GW8BHH/P. In the 1970s the group won many 144MHz contests from the Welsh site, often with the antenna sitting, unmoved, for hours as conditions brought strings of German stations in and out of the noise. As he grew older, the cold Welsh hilltops appealed less and less and we stopped contesting from there some years ago. However, the contesting bug stayed with him and in more recent years, before his illness, he really took to operating contests with the SK7MW contest group from their far more inviting shack in southern Sweden.

Russ was always full of ideas about how we could improve the equipment and antenna systems. A lot of his time was spent discussing these improvements, experimenting and building.

He was always building equipment. His homebrew equipment looked immaculate. He always maintained that amateur built equipment should still look as good as commercial gear. Russ’ did.

Russ was a generous person. Never one to refuse help to anyone who asked, Russ spent a lot of his time, in more recent years, repairing equipment for others. Often this meant he didn’t have enough '#*'#%;#last project. He was keen to join the free space optical communications activity. In particular he wanted to try some ideas for cloud scatter over long distances. His project will never see completion.

I will miss our chats on the radio and on the telephone. There will never be another Russ.Russ leaves a wife and brother.Vale RussSam Jewell, G4DDK
