Kunku Bai hails from Birkhani, a remote village in the hilly area

of Udaipur. Her family had a very small land holding with rocky

surface and low productivity. The family had 16 dependents

and were living in a very poor condition. Added to this, the land

was also mortgaged for the liability incurred and hence it was a

daily challenge to fulfill their basic needs.

Being the sole bread earner of the family, Kunku Bai had to

overcome a number of difficulties to keep the family going.

Although she was burdened with the family responsibility, she

was always inquisitive to learn and do something which can

improve the condition of the family.

Kunku Bai believes that her destiny is in her hands and has demonstrated it too!

Success Stories

One day, a team from ICICI RSETI visited her village to organise

an Entrepreneurship Awareness Proramme (EAP) as a prelude

to the training programme on organic farming. Kunku Bai

attended the EAP and decided to enroll for training in “Organic

Farming”, which was offered free of cost.

The training programme gave her a lot of information on

preparing organic manure, new techniques in controlling pests

and diseases, improving crop yields etc. She was very much

involved in the training and took a lot of interest to know the

various aspects of organic farming and also sought the guidance

from RSETI on how she can improve her land. During the

discussion, the Director of RSETI took special interest to analyse

her problems and guided her in clearing her loan for release of

the mortgage.

Thereafter, Smt. Kunku Bai raised a loan from SHG and from the

loan, she got the mortgage released. Thereafter, with the help

of JCB machine, she got her rocky land levelled and made it

ready for farming. She started raising a variety of vegetable

crops using organic farming techniques and also involved the

family members. Her hard work and undivided attention to

improve the productivity of land helped her in getting good

returns.

Today, Kunku Bai is a very successful farmer in organic farming.

Seeing her success, her friends and other villagers have started

coming to her seeking guidance and advice for taking up organic

farming. But for her hard work, dedication and the strong

inner urge to succeed against all odds, Kunku Bai and her

family would have remained in perpetual poverty.

Kunku Bai fondly remembers the timely training intervention,

continued support and guidance she received from ICICI RSETI,

which changed her destiny.

Today, she is a role model for others in her village on how hard

work, self belief and determination can lead to success and can

bring about a transformation in their lives.
