RSET IEDC Project Funding

RSET IEDC funded 5 student hobby projects which have a potential of transforming to

product. The total amount spends for this was Rs. 22,000. The details of each project are

given below.

1. Drainage Cleaning Robot

Though automation plays a vital role in all industrial applications, proper disposal of sewages

from industries and commercials are still a challenging task. In India the process of cleaning

or scavenging is done by manual labors and it’s one of the unhygienic jobs you can ever

imagine. More than thousands of people die every year doing these jobs. To overcome this

problem and for the betterment the human life, we design an “unmanned drainage Cleaning

System”. This project could be an efficient tool for management and maintenance of our

drains. Globally speaking, traditional method of sewage cleaning demands high economic

expenses mostly in terms of water and machinery requirement for the cleaning process.

Moreover, this cleaning job neglects one’s dignity and self-respect. Manual scavenging

laborers are vulnerable to health hazards. In India, Manual scavenging is a caste-based

occupation mainly involving cleaning septic tanks, sewers and gutters. So from our point of

view we prefer to automating drainage cleaning for well-functioning and proper waste

management in cities.

Page 39: RSET IEDC Report 2017 - Rajagiri School of Engineering & … · 2018-04-25 · RSET IEDC Report 2017 Page 15 RSET IEDC ICFOSS Meeting The first meeting by ICFOSS members was carried

RSET IEDC Report 2017

Page 39

This is an efficient and compactable solution to the present drainage problems. The

unmanned underwater mover is capable of detecting and removing sewage by using its

obstruction detection IR sensors and conveyor mechanism. An off terrain propulsion is

provided using caterpillar tracks powered by dc motors under water. An optimized water jet

cleanser is provided which utilizes drainage water to remove blocks and obstructions. A

conveyor with fork attachments serve as efficient hand picker’s .This waste is then

accumulated in a replaceable storage module with waste level indicator. A proper tracking

mechanism which enables the operator to detect the position coordinates. The storage module

can be easily replaced by the operator.

This project would be an excellent remedy to one of the unethical and sympathetic taboo in

today’s society. We being working on this project from our second semester has presented

this project on different platforms including SAVISKAR 2017, INDO-FRENCH WASTE

MANAGEMENT SUMMIT. We think this project demand a budget of Rupees 35,000

approx. This product can take over all manual scavenging activities, which gives it a

promising market.

2. Hover Pacifier for special children

Children on the autism spectrum face many issues and challenges on day to day basis. Child

with autism is a unique individual, with unique needs and abilities. Because of this, he or she

will experience those issues in a unique way or may experience obsessive compulsion. Their

main challenges are persistent difficulties, restricted or repetitive patterns of behaviour and

Page 41: RSET IEDC Report 2017 - Rajagiri School of Engineering & … · 2018-04-25 · RSET IEDC Report 2017 Page 15 RSET IEDC ICFOSS Meeting The first meeting by ICFOSS members was carried

Page 41

may be hypersensitive to certain sounds, also they have co- morbidities. The autistic child can

be calmed by playing their favourite song while they get irritated.

The proposed project explores the possibility of a miniature drone that could possible locate

the autistic kid and play music that would pacify the child. Specifically this mini project is

planned to design and build a drone configuration capable of being remotely controlled to fly

over to the child. The design considers various aspects of the power supply, trajectory

optimization and control design.

The mini project deals with the first phase of the mini drone that alert the adult and identifies

the shrill sound and flies over to autistic kid to play the melody which will pamper the kid till

the parent/care reaches. The real time observation the kid can be done by the camera installed

in drone. As a stretch goal of the mini project, is to design and model an autonomous drone to

sense the high frequency sounds produced by the autistic child during the hyper reactivity

problems and to calm down them by playing melodies for them.

Hover drone design with a sensor to monitor the autistic child. When the child makes shrill

sound or gets irritated, the device detects the behaviour and informs the caretaker by passing

message to the concerned phone or laptop.

3. Smart Braille Machine

This project aims to help the blind by developing a phone with Braille keypad. This project

makes use of embedded system based on PIC 16F877, a micro controller which is the main

part of the system.

We make use of a Button switch keypad. There is a fixed keys combination for each

character. User can convey messages by pressing each combination keys one by one. For

each combination, controller stores corresponding characters in microcontroller. By pressing

send button all the text is send to android phone through Bluetooth module.

In android side, we could speech out the text and also any voice message can be displayed in

braille machine, and in embedded side we have two operations. One is by sign language we

can communicate to android via Bluetooth module. And other is, in braille machine we could

display the message from android side for the blind. By using their fingers, they can read text

and message from android phone is fed to the input of six Servo motors by the same

Bluetooth module. We can give input to android phone via speech or text.

Page 43: RSET IEDC Report 2017 - Rajagiri School of Engineering & … · 2018-04-25 · RSET IEDC Report 2017 Page 15 RSET IEDC ICFOSS Meeting The first meeting by ICFOSS members was carried

A text to Braille converter is intended to aid the blind to interact with computers at

workplaces and homes. Though several such devices are available, the cost is a limiting

factor. Blind people face a great difficulty in receiving computer education due to the lack of

low cost technological support. Facilities for the sightless have been organized in different

places for providing reading facilities to the blind. These centres maintain archives of reading

materials (literature, science, etc.) in the form of Braille coded texts.

Scalabilty

This project is highly scalable. With enough funds it is a possible to build a Braille phone.

Most smart phones have touch screens and hence it’s not user-friendly for the blind. This

phone could overcome the limitations that smart phones have.

5.KiCheck - Check Mate all your Kitchen problems

Problem Identification

We have all run into trouble when we are all set to cook something and we find that we don’t

have enough curry powder left. Another reason for such a situation is that, while we are out

shopping we cannot be quite sure if we are running low on something or not. Cupboards we

use to store spices are often messed up.

The solution

KiCheck makes use of sensors to track the amount of curry powder left and when it falls

below a pre-determined level, the product notifies the user. Automated system to notify users

directly onto their smartphone.

We have all run into trouble when we are all set to cook something and we find that we don’t

have enough curry powder left. Another reason for such a situation is that, while we are out

shopping we cannot be quite sure if we are running low on something or not! Kicheck will be

a smart solution that will turn any ordinary kitchen into a one that frees you of all the troubles

associated with cooking. The base model will be a smart box that tracks the level of different

condiments in the jar using light sensors and if a commodity falls below a predetermined

level. It will automatically add it to your shopping list or send a push notification to the

registered phone.

A CAD model of the primary design

A microcontroller or an Arduino board will be used to track the sensor reading and relay the

information to the cloud. The levels can be tracked on a web interface or on a dedicated

android application. Going a step further we’d also love to bring in more helping hands into

the kitchen. We are looking forward to developing solutions that’ll minimize energy and

water wastage and of course the hassle associated with all these.

The problems we’d love to tackle include:

Monitor pressure cookers for whistles

Watching milk from getting spilled

Exhaust/chimneys that only run when there is smoke

Fridges that won’t let cold air to rush out when opened

Lids that tell you something has boiled

And many more….

Marketing and Scaling

Construction companies and builders will be contacted to launch our product in one of their

floors in their new flats being constructed. The benefits of using KiCheck will be

demonstrated. It will be installed at a minimal cost so as to attract attention to the product.

Forms of advertisements will also be used for marketing.

Revenue Model

Initial investment required is less and good profit can be made from the second year onwards.

Initially the product will be introduced for users at a minimal cost so as to build a user base

and to get recommendations from other builders and customers. Services for setting up

Ammek Ariyam and after sales service will be provided.

convenience of their homes. The concept was perceived in the year 2011 by Fr. Jaison Paul

Mulerikkal, when he was doing his PhD at the Australian National University. He found out

that many of his friends were struggling to find a proper retreat centre for their annual retreats

or to spend some time in quite during their holidays. There isn't any site, which consolidated

retreat offerings of various centres where people could directly book a retreat online.

He started to work on this project, mainly during his free times, as a hobby. Slowly, there

emerged a small enthusiastic team of people who were determined to pull this project up.

They came from different parts of the world - Auckland, Sydney, Melbourne, Canberra,

Stuttgart, Kochi, Bangalore and many more – and started to work together as a team

remotely, to make this dream come true. The domain – www.goretreat.com - was registered
