Update on progress to date and next steps for the RSA

• Secured ~1,400 sq m (15,000 sq ft) on the South East corner of the former Emcon Site

• 2 year window to pursue funding• Location will need to be rezoned from Light Industrial to

a Park• Currently in the Design phase which will lead to a

construction estimate for budgeting and tendering purposes

• Tentative time line may see some activity at the site in the fall of 2012 with construction commencing in the spring of 2013

Design Process Outline• Public input session to produce the “Design Description”

• Design Consultant Selection

• RSA Board to work with selected Design Consultant to refine basic skatepark layout and produce sketches and 3D renderings

• Site Technical review: Site Survey, Geotechnical Analysis and ???

• RSA to present design for public and city input.

• Design Consultants to finalize design and provide Issued for Construction Drawings, 3D models, Bill Of Materials and Construction Cost Estimates.

• After this – Develop our Tendering Strategy and Fundraise, Fundraise, Fundraise, build it and ride it!!!

Input from the city

• Complimentary fit to the rest of the park

• Provide a corridor to the rest of the park

What is a Skatepark• NOT JUST FOR SKATEBOARDS AND

SKATEBOARDERS!!!• A legitimate place for people to recreate & socialize• A designated spot for people of all ages and

backgrounds to practice their sport(???)• A collection of great ‘‘skate spots’’

– Skaters will search long and hard for the perfect skate spot• A destination• A permanent fixture in the community• Something to be proud of• Anything else???

Understanding the user groups• Skateboarding:

– Street skating– Park skating– Bowl/Pool/skating– Freestyle– Downhill

• Scootering

• Inline skating:– Freestyle (skateparks,

street)– Recreational

• Biking:– BMX (flat ground, freestyle,

trails, street, racing)– Freestyle Mountain biking– Casual riders (kids on

bikes)

• Like all sports there varying ability levels:– Novice– Intermediate – Advanced– Professional

Park Size• Mini park/skate spot: under 6,000 sq ft

(elementary school, condo complex, small park, etc)

• Neighbourhood: 6,000--12,000 sq ft(neighbourhood parks, etc)

• Community: 12,000--25,000 sq ft (community parks, high schools, recreation centers)

• Regional: 25,000--50,000 sq ft(regional parks, arenas, etc.)

• Destination: 50,000+ sq ft (large cities, destination parks)
