President's Message for lazz Festivall'g9gThe program for the twenty-second annual Lionel Hampton/Chewon lazzFestlal is truly outstand-

ing. This yea/s celebrity performers are among the greats in the iazz world. Of course, our own LionelHampton will again be ioining us with his big band.

The 1988{9 school year is a great one for the University of Idaho. On }anuary 30, we marked our 100thbirthday. Music has always been an important part of our long tradition.

Enþy the performances. "America's Music" is enjoyinggreat popularity. The Lionel Hampton Schoolof Music at the University of Idaho is proud to be part of our musical heritage. By participating in this yea/sfestival you become part of that heritage.

Best wishes to all participants, teachers, and to those who have worked so hard to produce this year'sextravaganza. We are looking forward to a fantastic Festival'89.

Sincerely,

Richard D. GibbPræidutt

From the Dean:It is entirely appropriate that this year's Lionel Hampton/Chewonlazz Festival should be the best

ever, because we are celebrating the university's one-hundredth birthday and because music ranks as one ofthe greatest of the University of Idaho's traditions. Our musical traditiory moreover, has always emphasizedlots of participation and spontaneity-two important characteristi cs of jazz. It is a thrill to see how theinterest in music at UI has grown from the days of pick-up groups and songfests to these days, when we arejoined by the stellar greats ollazz and when our School of Music proudly bears the name of Lionel Hamp-ton. We especially welcome the many high school musicians, whô have come to perform their music, andwe hope that you will give serious thought to returning, as UI students, to become a part of the great UImusical tradition.

Lionel HamptonHis grandmother thought she was giving him good advice when she said, "Boy, quit beatinl o¡r_those

glasses and dishes with those spoons and go and dry them right! Put that silliness out of yourhead;' .- The little five-year-old drummer told his grandmother, 'Mamma, I might be ab,le to put drummin' out

of my head, but I iuit can't seem to put it out oimy heart!"'What his grándmother didn:t irro* *as thaf he would someday be "Master of the Drums" and "Ki.gof the Vibes".

Hampton began playing for a new band organized by Les Hite, playing backlP to Louis Armshong inthe famoui Cotton CtuU.

-Arñrstrong called on Hãmpton to þin in a recording session with him and, during

a break, he wandered over to a vibrãharp in the corner. Until then the vibraharp was played for th9 "prett¡rsounds" it created, not as a iazz melodiCinstrument. Hampton played a number on-tt-re vibraharp forArmstrong and it became a'hit. From then o& Hampton was known as the 'I(ing of the Vibes".

His ñonors range from receiving a statehood award in Israel, being made a g_oodwlll ambassador by theU.S. State'Departmeñç and chosen aJthe only male to be made an honorary member of Hadassah.

Hamptôn continues to amaze people witt t is enthusiasm and !ús colgern fo¡.a[ people, 3lsing _ -millions of dollars for a Catholic Boys Home in Indianapolis, a Red Cross Hospital in Israel, and has heldbenefits to help send talented youngsters through school.

Luckily for his nvmy fans aroünd the worId, he never did manage to Put drumming out of his head orhis heart.

Wynton MarsalisIn 198O at the age of 19, Wynton

Marsalis literally exploded on the þzz scene.Excited fans rushed to hear this new trumpetartist in his performances with Art Blakey's|azz Messengers and Herbie Hancock's band,V.S.O.P. Critics have described him as"outspoken", "brash", "Íiery/' , and funcom-promising". Wynton has integrity- he playsIAZZ- never understating the importance ofhis mentors: Louis Armshong, Fats Navarro,Dizzy Gillespie, Miles Davis, Clifford Brown, and many others. In 19&t he won twoGrammy Awards for both his jazz andclassical performances. Nat Hentoff, in anarticle in the Wall Street fournal, describesWynton's music as "undilute d, jazz...Thesounds of his trumpet are mostly mellow andsinging, his lines are unfailingly clear, cohe-sive, and subtly surprising... and he swingsfluidly, like a bicyclist riding with his handsin his pockets."

Wynton will be featured with the RayBrown Trio.
