Message from our LSTA 2013 Institute Committee We are excited about the upcoming 2013 Professional Development Institute! This year’s Institute promises to be a hit—

from our Spooky Oct. 31st Thursday Extended Sessions/Field Trips and Exhibits Showcase Social, to our Friday and Saturday

one-hour Workshop Sessions with a bonus Saturday Extended Session! There is no professional development available

that matches what the Institute will offer to better prepare us to teach science! If you only have one Institute that you can

attend, you will do well to make this one your choice selection!

It is clear from our past Institute evaluations that LSTA Institutes are life changing as they open up a whole new community

of colleagues with whom to learn from and share information across the state of Louisiana and beyond! You will have

access to 15 Extended Sessions and nine one-hour Workshop Sessions presented by your peers and expert professional

developers. Highlights of the 2013 Institute include: the Exhibit Hall where you will find all of the current innovative

science education materials; meeting our 2013 NSTA President, Bill Badders and attending an Extended Session and a

Workshop Sessions by Debbie Silver, and Workshop Sessions by Michael Dispezio, meeting with the Louisiana Association

of Science Leaders (LASL), and many more opportunities to make connections and gain expertise!

As a Professional Learning Community, we encourage all of our members to join us in our “Each One Bring One” initiative.

We are requesting that each LSTA member share the wealth and recruit at least one fellow science teacher to attend the

Institute with you! We also encourage you to give back and share the knowledge you have gained through teaching!

The LSTA New Frontier Next Generation Science Standards Professional Development Institute is for ALL PK-16+ teachers

of science, principals, supervisors, non-formal educators, and professional developers! This three-day event is designed

to provide science educators and leaders the knowledge, skills, and instructional tools to effectively address the science

learning needs of their students. There are a variety of engaging sessions that target all grade-bands and science topics.

Each session offers effective learning strategies to teach science to all levels and interests of your students. The

opportunities to learn from peer teachers, and those who are experts in the field, are unprecedented. Once you

experience your first LSTA Institute, you will want to attend every year as your experiences will arm you with the resources

necessary to teach your students more effectively. REGISTER TODAY before the September 20 DEADLINE to take

advantage of the Pre-Conference Registration $60 fee that includes the LSTA Awards Luncheon!

Thursday Pre-Conference (9am-8:30pm): Day One consists of a variety of 3-hour or 6-hour extended sessions and field

trips that require the conference registration and an additional fee of $10 for morning or afternoon 3-hour sessions, or

$20 for all day, 6-hour sessions. EXTENDED SESSIONS are your opportunity to “dig into” the content and learn essential

concepts at a more comprehensive, in-depth level. This day also “kicks-off” the conference for all registered participants

with an Exhibits Showcase Social Thursday evening 5pm-8:30pm with hors d’oeuvres served 6pm-8pm! You will

definitely want to attend this important social! Meet new and veteran LSTA members and presenters while enjoying

delicious food and becoming familiar with the innovative new products and publications that address the NGSS and help

you become a more effective teacher or supervisor!

Friday: (8am-4:30pm) Day Two is filled with one-hour workshop sessions that target all grade bands and science

topics! The Louisiana Association of Science Leaders (LASL) will offer teacher-leaders and supervisors the information to

keep abreast of new information and upcoming changes in science education. Sessions begin at 8am and continue through

4:30pm. The Exhibit Hall is open 8am-4:30pm with the AWARDS LUNCHEON 11:30am-1pm.

Saturday: (8am-11:30am) Day Three provides a final chance to attend sessions that meet your instructional needs! There

is also an extended session focusing on classroom engineering applications to help teachers interested in incorporating

engineering design practices to prepare students for STEM careers.

Upcoming 2013 Institute Highlights

The LSTA Board is pleased to welcome Bill Badders, 2013 NSTA President,

to our annual science institute October 31-November 2 in Baton Rouge.

For more than four decades, Bill has been a devoted teacher and dedicated

leader in science education. In 1971, he began his teaching career as an

elementary science teacher in Cleveland. Badders is retired from the Cleveland

Metropolitan School District (CMSD) in Cleveland, Ohio, where he last served

as the director and principal investigator for the Cleveland Math and Science

Partnership program. Bill received a Presidential Award for Excellence in

Mathematics and Science Teaching (1992) and is a Fulbright Memorial

Teacher Fund recipient (2000).

A passionate member of NSTA, he served as a division director on NSTA's

board of directors. Bill has worked on several committees, panels and tasks

forces and regularly presents sessions at NSTA national and area conferences.

Michael DiSpezio is one of the most recognized, entertaining and sought-after

presenters at educator conferences throughout the world. In addition to offering

his unique style of dynamic, theatrical, and often interactive presentations, he

is a prolific author with over thirty published trade books and an equal number

of science textbook co-authorships.

As all agree, his enthusiastic, high-energy style is an infectious vehicle for his

delivery of a wide range of topics. Michael's research science background, days

on the stage and over a decade in his most noble career as a classroom teacher

have produced a speaker's speaker. Exploiting his background as a science

writer and educational consultant for organizations that range from the

Discovery Channel to the World Bank, Michael DiSpezio carries his messages

with validity and resolution. He is a true friend to LSTA and has given many

hours to students in classrooms in Louisiana.

With 30 years spent as a teacher, staff development instructor, and university

professor, Debbie Silver doesn't just know her way around the classroom – she

is familiar with the challenges educators face at every level, from kindergarten

to college. The former Louisiana Teacher of the Year has given presentations

around the world (including 49 states, Canada, Mexico, Europe, the Middle

East, and Asia), helping audiences to interact with students on a deeper level.

Her newest book, Fall Down 7 Times, Get Up 8: Teaching Kids to Succeed, is

being heralded by parents, teachers, and administrators as a “fresh approach to

getting kids to work smarter and better.” In it she explains motivational theory

and provides down-to-earth examples of concrete, applicable guidelines for

helping students overcome setbacks and failure to foster lifelong success. Her

mission is to remind teachers of how important they are in the lives of children,

highlighting both learning theory as well as tools for communication.

Things to Remember When Registering for Extended Sessions/Field Trips

√ Register early to improve the chances of securing your first choice. Every effort will be made to honor

your first choice. There is a maximum of participants for the extended sessions. Please see the session

listing. These sessions must have at least ten participants to be held.

√ Extended sessions require pre-registration. It is critical to planning that you complete the registration

form for the 2013 LSTA Institute by the Early Bird deadline of October 4, 2013. A confirmation e-mail will

be sent to you. Check spam mail. If you have not received a confirmation e-mail by October 15, 2013,

contact Gayle Glusman at [email protected].

√ There is a $10 charge for each 3hr. extended session and a $20 charge for the all-day sessions. All

sessions will be held at the Crowne Plaza Hotel and Conference Center in Baton Rouge, unless otherwise

noted. **Transportation for off-site sessions and field trips are the responsibility the participant unless

otherwise noted.

Learn about the whooping crane reintroduction program. Geared toward teachers of middle and high

school students and informal educators, this workshop will explain the reintroduction program,

working turbine. Use the engineering cycle to build, test and revise your model so that it generates as

Travel Grants are Available to Members to Attend the LSTA Institute

LSTA is awarding 10 travel grants for $300 each to offset the expense of attending the LSTA conference in Baton Rouge. The money can be used to cover conference registration, short course registration, lodging, meals, parking, or travel. Grant applicants will be notified of their status at least one month prior to the conference. The money will be awarded at the conclusion of the conference. Awardees must attend the conference through the conclusion of the Saturday program.

Applications must be submitted no later than 12 midnight on September 9, 2013. The LSTA Awards Coordinator will select a committee of science leaders from throughout the state to score the applications. Order of receipt or geographic location will not necessarily be considered in the awarding of the travel grants.

Qualifications and regulations for grant eligibility are as follows:

1. Applicants must be LSTA members on or before August 1, 2013.

2. Awardees are expected to attend the full conference and take maximum advantage of the sessions.

3. Awardees are expected to use information and skills gained at the conference to improve their teaching skills and classroom instruction.

4. Awardees are not eligible to reapply for the travel grant for the next three Annual LSTA Conferences.

5. Awardees who decline to attend the 2013 LSTA Conference cannot apply the money to other conferences or transfer it to another individual.

6. Awardees who decline to attend the 2013 LSTA Conference and who have not given a minimum notice of two weeks to the LSTA Awards Coordinator are not eligible to reapply for the travel grant for the next three Annual LSTA Conferences.

7. LSTA Officers, Board Members, or Travel Grant Committee Members are not eligible for the grant.

8. Awardees cannot submit expenses that will be paid by other funding sources.

Entries that do not meet the requirements will be disqualified. All entry components must be electronically submitted no later than 12 midnight on September 9, 2013. Submit the application documents to Jan Graff ([email protected]). The subject line should include the name of the applicant and LSTA Travel Grant. Do you know outstanding teachers or educators who deserve special recognition? Encourage them to apply or nominate them for an LSTA award! The awards include the following categories.
