KEYS TO INTERPRETING PROPHECY/REVELATION
• Read Broadly and Intensely – go back to the Greek if you need to
• Compare various translations – if all the versions say the same than the original is clear – if not then it paints a picture of the original
• Compare with the rest of the Bible – OT references, gospel connections, chapter in context
• Historical Context – think about the audience of John’s time and the situation in which he was and how he needed to get his message out to them
• Where is Jesus – how is He represented? Because the purpose of this to grow a relationship with Him and show us how to live today.

What Does the NUMBER Mean?
Numbers in the book of Revelation are typically symbolic, which means they represent qualities rather than quantities. Sometimes the numbers are blatant, and other times they are subtle.

4 SCHOOLS OF INTERPRETATION• School #1: Preterist
• This school approaches Revelation as a piece of Ancient Literature, specifically to the 7 churches in the Roman Province of Asia
• School #2: Historicist
• This school approaches Revelation like our study of Daniel, a history of the world in advance, covering the time of the writer until the 2nd coming of Jesus; the history of Western Civilization
• School #3: Futurist
• This school approaches Revelation as if it was written almost solely for the last days of earth’s history, the last generation of people.
• School #4: Idealist/Spiritual
• This school approaches Revelation with the mindset that the message is filled with principles of life in symbolic form that apply to any time and any place. My time, my place, and my life.

RE-CAP OF 7 CHURCHESBible Characteristics
Preterist(John’s Time)
Historicist(Christian History)
Idealist(Meaning in My Life Today)
Futurist(meaning for people after me/us)
Thyatira*has love and faith*does Service*is Persevering
Jesus Picture:Song of God, eyes blazing fire, feet burnished bronze
It was a commercial city that made royal purple and wool
People were poor laborers
Problem was that the Christians could not join a trade guild because the meetings were held in pagan temples
Middle Ages• Characteristic
of papal triumph and persecution
Reformation*Division between Catholic and Protestant*The church was promoting false doctrine
Division – because during this time of life, a Christian is very loving and active in service BUT tolerates false teaching within its own mind/church
Know the TRUTH and do not be misled by things almost correct.

TRUMPETS
• Uses in OT – call to worship and preparation, military conquests,
• In Revelation – to announce the final punishment of those who have rejected God and have persecuted His people.
• 1/3 – means it is partial judgements – does not completely destroy
TRUMPETS ANALYSIS
• Trumpets 1 & 2 – destruction against those who crucified Jesus – connects to the Red Horse of the 2nd Seal;
• Trees = people Mountains = nations Ships = nations’ wealth and power
• Historicist – connects with the fall of Jerusalem to Rome in 70AD
The 1st trumpet shows God’s judgement begins at home (Jews) who claim to be HIS and the 2nd Trumpet moves on to others that rejected God’s message (Romans)
• Trumpets 3 & 4 – Points to Darkness within the Church/truth – connects to the Black Horse of the 3rd Seal

JESUS!!
RS 25 – APRIL 29
Today’s Goals – to wrap up the section of the 7 Trumpets by understanding its important symbols and to gain valuable info for understanding future sections.
Agenda
• 7 Trumpets Analysis
• Worship
• Beliefs #13 & #26
• Class Wrap
BELIEF #13 – THE REMNANT AND ITS MISSION
The universal church is composed of all who truly believe in Christ, but in the last days, a time of widespread apostasy, a remnant has been called out to keep the commandments of God and the faith of Jesus. This remnant announces the arrival of the judgment hour, proclaims salvation through Christ, and heralds the approach of His second advent. This proclamation is symbolized by the three angels of Revelation 14; it coincides with the work of judgment in heaven and results in a work of repentance and reform on earth. Every believer is called to have a personal part in this worldwide witness.
BELIEF #26 – DEATH AND RESURRECTION
The wages of sin is death. But God, who alone is immortal, will grant eternal life to His redeemed. Until that day death is an unconscious state for all people. When Christ, who is our life, appears, the resurrected righteous and the living righteous will be glorified and caught up to meet their Lord. The second resurrection, the resurrection of the unrighteous, will take place a thousand years later.
RS 25 – APRIL 30 & MAY 1
• Today’s Goals – to understand the climax of Revelation and identify the key players in the final scene.
• Agenda
• Worship
• Revelation 12, 13, 14
• Class Wrap
“PEAK” OF THE MOUNTAIN – CLIMAX OF REVELATION
• Revelation 12, 13, and 14
• As you read this section – Dramatize your section to present to the class
• Option -- make a storyboard
• Draw a sketch of each scene and write a 1 sentence description of the action
WOMAN
• Interpreted as the people of God
• Flees into the wilderness for time, times, half a time -- remember from Daniel-- it equals 3.5 years/42 months/1260 days
• Represents the history of Christianity
• Grows eagles wings to escape -- eagle represents God's protection
• Represents Eve and pure church
• OT connections – Genesis 3 & Exodus 19
MALE CHILD
• Interpreted as Jesus
• Some say that the dragon attack on the child is the literal attack of Herod on baby Jesus or Jesus crucifixion
• Before this chapter the character Michael has been described as an angel and he is also Jesus -- this has caused confusion because today angel means something different than in John's day then it meant just a "being" or messenger from the OT
DRAGON
• Enormous red dragon interpreted as Satan/devil
• First wages war in heaven and is defeated -- physical war
• Then wages war on earth against God's people -- spiritual war
• While the woman is in the wilderness the dragon spews water meaning persecution-- refers to the Middle Ages and the time of persecution towards God's people but this also has a future application that the dragon is waging war on the last day followers of God
• 7 heads and 10 horns = all the civil powers Satan has used
• Counterfeit Trinity -- portrays God the Father
SEA BEAST• Remember that John is living during the time of the Roman
Empire and facing persecution that lasted all through the Middle Ages -- this is key to understanding when the sea beast grew
• 10 horns, 7 heads, blasphemous names, body like a leopard, feet like a bear, mouth like a lion -- sounds like the beasts of Daniel 7
• Gets power from the Dragon, one of the heads has a fatal wound that has healed, the whole world follows the beast, men worshiped the dragon because of the beast, mutters proud words for 42 months, blasphemes God and his name and his people! Makes war with the saints! Was shown to do miraculous things that would and deceived the people
• Fatal wound that is healed in Greek is translated and refers to slain lamb thus connects with NT and Jesus. This confuses because this is good but part of the Sea Beast which is bad -- need to remember that the dragon's strategy is deception!
• Counterfeit Trinity -- portrays Jesus because of the language who is like the Beast just like Jesus is phrased as who is like God
LAND BEAST• Came out of the earth meaning without
any history so something completely new
• Horns like a Lamb but breaths like a dragon – appears Christian yet forces the practise of untruths
• Looking for something that was founded on religious freedom yet persecutes those who do not conform
• The main idea is about worship
• Counterfeit Trinity -- portrays the Holy Spirit because it calls fire from heaven like the Pentecost
MARK OF THE BEAST/NUMBER OF MAN/666
• Mark of the Beast or the Number of Man or 666
• Allusion to Ezekiel 9, Deuteronomy 6
• **However we interpret this number -- John and his readers would have known it and we know that it is not God's number
• Options for interpretation:
• Palindrome numbering- letters have numerical value -- Ronald Regan, Martin Luther, Bill Gates, Barney, and the Holy Bible all add up to 666
• Vicarius Filii Dei, “Vicar of the Son of God.”
• Babylonian numbering system is based on 6's rather than 10s
• 6 is incomplete falling short of God's perfect number is 7
• 6 is half of 12 and 12 represents God's people so maybe 6 portrays the opposing side
• 6th day of creation when man and animals are created so it could point to creation
• 666 appears in only one other place outside of Revelation -- Solomon's income each year was 666 talents of gold
• Daniel 3 describes dimensions of the image as 60 cubits high, by 6 cubits wide, by 6 cubits deep – Maybe John used this 666 as an allusion to that story
REMNANT/ 144,000/ A GREAT MULTITUDE WITHOUT NUMBER
• Greek word is loipos meaning the rest or the remaining ones
• “The remnant of Revelation would seem to be a worldwide, spiritual, last-day group drawn from every worldwide organization and government” by Dr. Jon Paulien
• OT refers to Joel 2:23
• OT -- marking on the forehead was a recognition of that person’s character therefore it reflects the character of God
• Marks to recognize the Remnant:
• keep ALL the Commandments
• Have the testimony of Jesus
• Object of worldwide interest
• focus of worldwide coalition
• carry a significant message
• Characteristics:
• has God’s Seal/name on their forehead
• Loyal to God -- uses sexual language here because those acquainted with OT would understand the imager of loyalty to God
• in Continuous relationship with Jesus
• they are authentic and understand the double message of the cross -- humans are lost yet we are acceptable to God in Jesus Christ
3 ANGELS
• 1st Angel -- tells the eternal gospel to every nation, tribe, language and people -- Fear God and give Him glory, for the hour of His judgment has come. Worship Him who made the heaven, earth, sea, and the fountains of water.
• 2nd Angel -- Babylon is fallen -- (Clear Word) -- Confusion! There is a falling away from truth because the sea beast is working to make every nation drink the wine of spiritual adultery.
• 3rd Angel -- tells the punishment for those who worship the beast -- The first of God’s judgement will given no rest to those who worship the sea beast until they are destroyed. And the endurance of the saints, those who keep the commandments of God and the faith of Jesus.
FINAL SCENE
• The Harvest is taken of the wicked and they destroy each other
• The Remnant stand on the sea of glass and praise God.

7 BOWLS OF PLAGUES
• Remember that the Trumpets were only a partial destruction/warning whereas the Bowls are a universal/complete, game over, destruction.
• John mentions that the Sanctuary is open – it indicates that the time is up for Satan
• 1st Bowl
• Word for “sore” is the same used in Exodus with the plague in Egypt and the story of Job
• Symbolizes either a divine test or divine punishment
• 2nd & 3rd Bowls
• Connects with the importance of the Nile to Egypt and the Euphrates to the Babylonians
• Suggests a total eco-meltdown
• 4th Bowl
• Sun = God; finally see complete God and their own complete wickedness
• It is against people are tamid rejecting God
• Instead of pleading mercy, they are cursing God
• 5th Bowl
• Connects with Egyptian Plague of darkness
• Suggests isolation
6TH BOWL -- BATTLE OF ARMAGEDDON
• Armageddon is primarily a battle for the mind, a battle over the thoughts, spiritual
• Battle over with whom to believe in the context of strife and persecution
• About 2 trinities in conflict – each with their own “agents”/angels
• Holy Trinity – God, Jesus, Holy Spirit & 3 Angels
• Unholy Trinity – Dragon, Sea Beast, Land Beast, and 3 Frogs
• Three Frogs -- Compare to the 3 Angels of Revelation 14 – offer a counterfeit gospel
7TH BOWL
• Creates chaos and mayhem
• It is FINISHED
SUMMING UP
Religious – worldwide confederacy
Political – worldwide political union

Clues in Revelation include:Unholy TrinityProstitute BabylonCity of BabylonGreat city – later we will learn that it is the New Jerusalem
Clues in Revelation include:EuphratesKings of worldMany watersEarth dwellersBeast10 hornsCities of the nations “the eighth”
Clues in Revelation include:ChristKing of the EastCalledChosenFaithfulWatchful ClothedRemnant144,000Great Multitude
Looking at all of Revelation – it seems to indicate that in the last days of earth’s history there will be three great groupings of people:
• Symbolizes false religion which disregards God’s Law and leads people into breaking it. She rides on the beast (political power)
• Most scholars agree that the 7 kings are: Egypt, Assyria, Babylon, Media-Persia, Greece
• Which makes Rome the 6th; John’s time
• Which makes USA the 7th
FINAL SCENE

PURPOSE OF THE 1000 YEARS
• The righteous have time to heal because of missing loved ones not in heaven
• The people that were expected to be in heaven are missing
• There will be some unexpected people in heaven
• Need time to recover from the effects of sin

• All questions about the character of God or about His actions in human history are forever answered
AFTER THE MILLENNIUM
• Event 1: Satan is loosed and gathers his followers and surround the camp of God but fire comes down from God and devours them; the devil who deceived them is thrown into the lake of fire
• Event 2: The Throne of God descends and the Book of Life is opened
• The 2nd Resurrection (the wicked are brought back to life) and they are judged according to their works by the things written in the book

ASSIGNMENT – PICTURES OF JESUS (PREVIOUS SEMESTER, NOT NOV OF 2014)• The whole premise of John’s book of Revelation is to “reveal Jesus”
• Go through the entire book and collect the snapshots/images of Jesus that were shown.

Living the Apocalyptic Vison in the 21st Century -- Taken from George Knight
• Synoptic Gospels – Matthew 24, 25, Mark 13, Luke 21
• Theme – waiting, Jesus is delayed, and readiness
• “The lesson is clear. Readiness for the return of Christ does not mean passively waiting for the event. Rather, readiness is responsible activity that produces results for the kingdom of heaven – results that the Master can see and approve of.” (95)
• Greatness based on service
• “The average person sees the heart of true religion as believing in right doctrines or as practicing certain ritual and lifestyle duties… what He requires of His children is not outward behavior or ritual obedience but “to act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God’” (Micah 6:6-8; 96)
• “It is the unconscious internalization of God’s love and its expression in daily life that is the one essential qualification fro the kingdom of heaven.” (98)
• “Christ explicitly teaches that those waiting for His return must put their emphasis on being faithful servants.” (101)
• “Jesus wants us to take our minds off of that obsession (deciphering the time of the Advent) and to live every day in such a way that we will be ready when He returns.” (102)
ASSIGNMENT – BELIEFS (PREVIOUS SEMESTER ASSIGNMENT – NOT NOV 2014)
• Reacquaint yourself to the Christian Denomination you chose before AND the World Religion you studied.
• Find their website and find out whether they accept Daniel and Revelation as prophetic literature, do they use a particular School of Interpretation etc.
• If they DO NOT accept prophetic literature as it is in the Bible, what do they believe or do they have their own, and explain.
• Remember the topics we discussed are – Jesus and His 2nd Coming,
