Clavicle/AC Joints/ Scapula Radiography
Position CR Demonstrates
AP projection (clavicle)
AP- CR perpendicular to midclavical AP 0 degrees- entire clavicle visualized
including both AC and sternoclavicular joints and acromion
AP axial projection (clavicle)
AP axial- CR 15-30 degrees cephalad to midclavicle
Entire clavicle visualized including both AC and sternoclavicular joints and acromion
AP projection (AC joints)
CR is perpendicular to midpoint between AC joints, 1 inch above jugular notch
Both AC joints, entire clavicles and SC joints are demonstrated
AP projection (Scapula)
CR is perpendicular to midscapula, 2 inches inferior to coracoid process, or to level of axilla, and approx 2 inches medial from lateral border
of patient
Lateral portion of the scapula is free of superimposition
Medial portion of the scapula is seen through the thoracic structures
Lateral position/patient erect (Scapula)
CR to midvertebral border of scapula
Entire scapula should be visualized in a lateral position as evidenced by direct superimposition of vertebral and lateral borders. True lateral is shown by direct superimposition of vertebral
and lateral bordersBody of scapula should be in profile, free of
superimpostion by ribsAs much as possible, the humerus should not
superimpose the area of interest of the scapula. Collimate area of interest
Lateral position/ patient recumbent
(Scapula)CR to midscapular lateral border
Entire scapula should be visualized in a lateral position
