THE ISLE OF LOMEA – The Goodwin Sands

During this past, rough winter weather, the waves pounding over the Goodwin Sands have

seemed larger and more ferocious than ever before. This treacherous stretch of moving sands

has claimed the lives of many men and broken their ships; all graphically described by Pete

Legg in his talk to Kingsdown Conservation Group in February.

With words, photographs and appropriate music, he told a capacity audience about

some of these disasters and the bravery of the rescuers in dreadful conditions. We also

gained insight into what it was like to be in an H.M. Coastguard launch from a video - complete

with engine sound track and the movement of a rough sea. Not for the faint hearted! Neither

is a foray out to the sands at night, when eerie lights and crosses appear out of nowhere and

bells ring for the dead mariners. There was a rational reason for these phenomena; masts

sticking above the water and the winds rattling metal against metal, but it was a terrific ghost

story which had everyone on the edge of their seats. In true nautical style, Pete Legg held us

spell-bound with tales of events that have happened only a short way out to sea from our

village. Mary Lord

Hi Everyone, You may notice a few slight changes in the style of Rural Roundup this month. This is due to Joe Wall so kindly helping me. I can’t believe how smoothly the way it has all worked out. Joe’s IT expertise enables us both to share the task. The way it is set up all copy will still come to me and Joe will be able to access it, so in future any replies required may come from either Joe or myself, depending on who is working on the publication at the time. I am so

lucky to have found such a talented person to help. Thank you, Joe. You will notice that in the Ringwould-w-Kingsdown Parish Council Report on page 15, Katie has mentioned a “Front Garden” competition which is being planned for both villages. Full details will be published next month, but in the meantime start thinking about how you can contribute. For those with a hard standing for a front garden, how about troughs, pots and hanging baskets? A grass verge close by could be cultivated also. And don’t forget the “Sunflowers”!! Let us all see how beautiful we can make Ringwould and Kingsdown. There will be a prize worth winning. And finally, thank you to all who have gone to the trouble to pass on a donation to help fund this, now well established, publication which is delivered free of charge to over 1,500 households in the Parish. Without your contributions we could not do this. Doreen Clark Ed.

Saving our Farmers – Few of us can fail to have been moved by the plight of British farmers particularly with the flooding on the Somerset Levels. With this in mind the church has decided to give the proceeds from our Lent Lunches to the Farm Community Network, a charity which supports farmers in distress. At a lent lunch you will get a bowl of homemade soup, bread and a little

cheese for £4. There is also a ‘bring and buy’ table.

Please do support this worthy cause. The dates of the three lunches are:-

26th March at Tythe Barn House, Front St (the Maynards)

9th April at 3 Manor Mews (the Dourthes)

ST NICHOLAS PLAYERS…….

Our spring production is a comedy with poignant moments called 'The Reunion' by Peter Gordon.

When Nigel arranges a reunion in the back room of a pub he is optimistic for a good turnout. Whilst the numbers disappoint him, he soon has his hands full when a motley middle aged threesome turn up bringing with them assorted wives, girlfriends, prejudices and resentments that have simmered for at least 35 years. Comedy and confusion combine in this hilarious yet thought provoking play.

Dates of the production are 23rd

, 24th, 25

th and 26

th April at Ringwould Village

Hall, curtain up at 7.30pm.

Dear Friends

I have just returned from an incredible holiday in Sri Lanka. A beautiful land full of contrasts. A country of poverty and wealth, a country of bribes and corruption but my overriding memory will be the true warmth and welcome of all the people. I believe they can indeed teach us much about the true meaning of hospitality and welcome. Here are just a few examples – and perhaps some food for thought.

Our host would wake at four in the morning just to prepare and cook our meals. And when buying the food – and especially the fruit - it had to be just right. Anything not just right would be left on the fruit stall and such care was taken about everything.

And one day we were invited to go and visit a family who lived in the countryside. They were so proud that we were going to visit them. The house had one living room and the floor was bare but had been painted. They were extending the house – when they have some money they build what they can and then wait until they can afford to buy more bricks. The family had borrowed chairs so that we could sit down and the son was concerned that he would have to borrow some knives and forks – we tried to assure them that this wasn’t necessary. He had also been given a couple of hours off work so that he could be at home to welcome us. The family gave us tea in borrowed cups and saucers and cake and bananas on borrowed plates. They had spent so much on cake and ba-nanas that we all felt guilty because we knew they couldn’t afford to buy them.

Then, a couple of days later a neighbour came to visit us. She didn’t only bring her good wishes, she had also brought gifts for all of us – apparently a Sri Lankan tradi-tion. They truly enjoy giving – even to people that they don’t know – just for the sheer pleasure. A welcome and gesture that I will always remember.

Another example of welcome and hospitality was extended to us when we stopped at the roadside for a picnic. I was rather concerned that we were trespassing on some-one’s front garden but was told that this is quite normal practice in Sri Lanka and that we would be welcomed! And then, as if to confirm this, the lady of the house came to greet us and to offer us the use of her chairs so that we would be more comfortable. She even threw stones at the monkeys who were trying to steal our picnic!

Just a few examples of true hospitality extended to complete strangers. And what would Jesus say? Well, in Luke 10 vv25-28, when a lawyer stood up to test Jesus and asked him ‘what must I do to inherit eternal life?’ Jesus said to him, ‘What is written in the law? What do you read there?’ The lawyer answered, ‘You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your strength, and with all your mind; and your neighbour as yourself.’ And Jesus said to him, ‘You have given the right answer; do this, and you will live.’ So I would just like to encourage us all to love our neighbours as ourselves – and not only our neighbours - but also those we don’t yet know, but who sometimes touch our lives, for however brief a moment.

Yours in Christ, Cathy

Ringwould News continued……………… Friends of St Nicholas Church

2013 was a good year financially for Friends of St Nicholas Church. As well as the regular annual donations which now exceed £1000 per year, the August Garage safari combined with the teas served in the church on the day, attracted stallholders and visitors alike and added another £400 to the fund.

Over the last couple of years, the Friends’ fund has contributed to essential repairs to the boiler house, which was damaged by vandalism, and also the cost of the CCTV system, which has proved invaluable; there were no thefts or acts of vandalism in 2013. For the future, the church architect has listed a large number of items for attention over the next five years, of which repairs to the tower will take priority and it is hoped that the fund will be able to contribute to these works.

If you admire our beautiful village church and would like to help preserve it for future generations, so that villagers and visitors alike can continue to enjoy its history, architecture and atmosphere of peace and tranquillity, then please do consider becoming a friend. All the money raised is used to restore, preserve and enhance the church building. Why not sign up to a regular donation? Just £10 a year will make a real difference to fund raising. Leaflets can be found in the church and can be downloaded from the website: www.ringwouldchurch.com/friendsofstnicholas.htm

Thanks to everyone who has donated this year and to all who supported the garage safari To those regular donors who do not contribute by standing order then please do not forget to let us have your 2013-14 donations. Just post or deliver them to The Gate House, Manor Mews, Ringwould or to Jean Winn, Chilterns, Back Street, Ringwould

There is good news about the future of the Ringwould History Society.

The Committee met in January and came up with some excellent ideas. These will be put

to you at an AGM to be held on Tuesday 4th March in Ringwould village hall. Doors will

open at 6.30pm in time for a talk at 7pm by Kevin Murphy on the subject of Swimming

the English Channel. (Please note that everyone will be charged £3 as no membership

fees have been requested this year.) Kevin is the Honorary Secretary of the Channel

Swimming and Piloting Federation. He is a great raconteur with an excellent sense of

humour. You can read more about him on his website: -http://

www.kingofthechannel.com/kevin-murphy

The talk will finish in time for the AGM to begin at 8pm. The hall will be set up "Café

style", as it was for the Extraordinary Meeting on 27th June. Just before the AGM starts

we will be serving cheese and wine. Please come along and join in the discussion about

plans for the future, such as an exhibition on WWI in August (see page 27).

Key Stage 2 are currently in the middle of their enterprise projects. Each junior class has set up a business from an initial £50 investment, and are working hard to now try to make a profit. Profits made, after the £50 investment has been repaid, are given to the class to spend how they wish (after a donation to our school charity). The children have been very creative in their business plans, and money making ideas include a quiz night, a cookery book, a wacky photo booth and a chocolate bingo. Years 3 & 4 are using their profits to subsidise a trip to see ‘Charlie and the Chocolate Factory’ in London.

Kingsdown & Ringwould CEP School should convert to an academy on the 1st March 2014. The journey to reach this position has been a long and often frustrating one – but finally all the legal issues have been sorted and the papers signed. As an academy the school will continue to run much as it did before, working alongside the Diocese and other local schools. One of the major benefits academy status will bring us is the ability to financially plan long term and bid for funding to finally replace our two mobile classrooms Jo Hygate

Save the Children would like to thank the pupils of Kingsdown and Ringwould CEP school for holding a breakfast event and raising the sum of £289 for the children affected by the Typhoon in the Philippines. This is an amazing sum that the children have raised and Save the Children is very grateful to all the pupils for supporting the event. This sum is enough to enable 12 families to purify water for drinking for a month and also to enable a child to have access to medical care including life saving vaccinations for one year. In the three months since Typhoon Haiyan hit the Philippines, thanks to your support, our teams have been doing what-ever it takes to help children and to rebuild lives. Save the Children is one of the charities that make up the Disasters Emergency Committee and so respond immediately whenever crisis strikes. Schools, homes, and clinics were washed away by the typhoon. Our teams have helped more than 180,000 children. We sent 12 Save the Children Doctors and six mobile health clinics to provide front line medical care. We have set up temporary 'learning spaces' as we know that if a child is given the appropriate care after a disaster, that child has the capacity to recover from even the most extreme trauma. We have delivered household items and items for shelter as well as 'hygiene kits' which enable families to stay clean and healthy. Our 'Back to School' Clean up Campaign is working in ten schools and we have reached nearly 5,500 children in Panay. Regards, Sarah Spong, Chair East Kent Coastal Save the Children

The February Parish Council Meeting took place at The Learning Opportunities Centre and numerous topics were discussed:

Councillors welcomed new co-opted Councillor Mr James Murray onto the Parish Council.

The Children’s and Youth Worker for the benefice of Kingsdown and Ringwould with Ripple and Sutton made a presentation to the Parish Coun-cil to set up a youth club for youths aged between 11-18 offering activities and group games. Councillors support the idea, and hope that the youth in the Parish show their support and enthusiasm to help get this set up. For more information, please contact Beki via email

[email protected]

Kingsdown residents attended the meeting to request that the Parish Council contact the local bus company to try and expand the current bus route to Dover, Canterbury or Westwood Cross and to also provide a later bus service between Kingsdown and Deal. The Parish Council are happy to look into this, but need to know what services Kingsdown residents require. If you have any suggestions please contact Anne Grant on 01304 361 704 or Janice Levett on 01304 361 668.

Repairs to both Ringwould and Kingsdown parks will be carried out shortly to maintain safe play areas in the Parish.

A member of the public thanked the Parish Council for erecting a fence behind the down hill goal in the Kingsdown recreation ground.

The Parish Council have decided to stage a Garden in Bloom competition this summer and will judge the best front garden in the Parish at the start of August so start planting for your chance to win a prize this summer! For more details about the competition look in next month's Rural Roundup.

The Annual Parish Meeting will take place on Monday 28th April at 6.30pm

at Kingsdown Village Hall. Please come along and meet your Parish Councillors.

The next ordinary meeting of the Parish Council takes place on Monday 10

th March at Kingsdown Village Hall at 7.30pm.

Tea and Chat in Ripple…Tea and Chat met in Ripple Village Hall on February 10th to enjoy drinking tea, eating sandwiches and cakes and, of course, chatting. It was also a pleasure to celebrate Daisy Ovenden’s ninetieth birthday and another round of birthday cake. Congratulations to Daisy. The next Tea and Chat meeting will be in Ripple Village Hall on Monday, March 10th at 2.00pm

The Church of St. Mary the Virgin, Ripple….Another tree was damaged in the churchyard during one of the frequent recent gales. This has been made safe and the fallen wood removed.

Ripple Village Hall….Due to the persistent wet weather, it has been necessary to close the field to car parking. It will be opened again as soon as possible, and in the meanwhile it will be helpful if Hall users park as thoughtfully as possible.

Ripple Parish Council….Following the cancellation of the programmed meeting for December, a Council meeting was held on January 23rd, 2014. At this meeting it was agreed, with reluctance, by all councillors, that due to the 50% cut in subsidy by Dover District Council, the Precept would be raised to £4192, thus increasing the Council Tax element by 1.999%.

Some comments arising from Sutton-by-Dover Parish Council Meeting.

1. At the resignation of the Chairman (Mr Simon Butcher) a new Chairman has been nominated. The Parish Council are very pleased to welcome Carolyn Clews as their Chairman. We wish Simon all the best and thank him for his wonderful leadership.

2. There is a vacancy for a Parish Councillor. Meetings are held on the first Tuesday of the month at 7.30pm. If anyone is interested in joining the Parish Council please contact the Parish Clerk or come along to a meeting. We would be pleased to meet you.

3. Kent County Councillor Mr Manion told the meeting that the impending changes to the ‘Freedom Bus Pass’ had caused a lot of public concern. KCC are to hold a meeting to review the changes and would be finalising it during February.

4. The trustees of the Playing Field in Studdal are to dissolve the existing Trust. This will enable The Playing Field to be dedicated to the Fields in Trust.

5. Carolyn Clews would love parishioners to send any articles of interest and photos which she can put on the Parish website. Anyone may submit a poem for the month which can be sent to: www.suttonbydoverpckentparishes.gov.uk

Let’s be Sociable We are a very friendly group that meet from 10.30 ‘til 11.45am on the third Tuesday of every month, usually in the Church Hall, Downs Rd, Studdal. There is always a Bring and Buy stall, with home-made jams and local grown vegetables etc. and a Raffle. So come for a chat and a hot drink. Everyone is welcome and all the proceeds go to charities.

I did a quick tour around the garden the other day when I was not in fear of getting soaked to the skin. Although the ground is sodden and compacted it was wonderful to see the few snowdrops I have in the garden, poking their heads up through the soil. The violets are also flowering in the beds

and the lawn. So is Spring just around the corner or is it wishful thinking? Wishful thinking I can hear you say as the forecast is not good, especially for those living on the Somerset Levels and in areas of Kent. It is bad enough being cooped up in the house, but the thought of your home and garden which you have lovingly tended being destroyed by the elements and mother nature is inconceivable. So I thank my lucky stars that my shed is not upside down, the greenhouse looks very forlorn, the garden is sodden, the weeds will soon start to grow and that I can walk out of the door without a foot or more of water to contend with. I am writing on Sunday 9th

February when the sun is shining and look forward to many more days like this one all over the country. Susan Martin - Chairman

DAFFODILS

The golden glow of daffodils, especially when suffused with sunlight, reminds us of the sun’s potential to nourish our minds, bodies and souls at a time of year when we are yearning to feel its warm rays again after the many dark, grey days of Winter. The mere sight of daffodils, especially when planted en masse, has the power to make us feel just as euphoric as the poet William Wordsworth, I think. He was so inspired whilst out walking one day in 1802 that he penned one of the most famous poems of all times, his “Daffodils:”

“I wandered lonely as a cloud That floats on high o’er vales and hills, When all at once I saw a crowd, A host of golden daffodils……”

If one reads on to the final verse he seems almost to be hallucinating with the memory! This is not really so surprising when one considers that the Latin name for Daffodil is Narcissus, which comes from the Greek word narkotikos, in reference to the plants’ narcotic qualities, it is thought. There is the tale in mythology of the beautiful young man Narkissos who falls in love with his own image, dies and is transformed into a Narcissus flower. A heady tale indeed but I digress. Strictly speaking, (and botany is extremely strict!), a daffodil is only a daffodil if the flower’s central cup, otherwise known as its trumpet, is as long or longer than the petals. These trumpet daffodils are native to Britain too; in Elizabethan times they would have grown wild, all over cities and towns too. All of the species, including many white and bi-colour varieties, are lovely; and easy to grow but if you missed the chance to plant up your own gardens last Autumn you can at least get out and about this Spring to enjoy seeing them fluttering around in the breeze. Walmer Castle gardens should be well worth a visit. Lynda Synge

“Those who teach shall also learn,

and those who learn shall also teach”

This concept underpins all the activities with the White Cliffs Country U3A and our programme of learning for our members. Retirement or semi-retirement is a good time to pick up on interests that may have been put on the back burner during a hectic working life. In the U3A we learn through sharing! Some members lead courses in their homes, over a number of week. on a variety of subjects which may fall within art, history, music, politics or technology. No classroom pressures, no homework – just a relaxed friendly atmosphere in which to share your interest with others. And other groups share favourite pastimes, such as Canasta, French Scrabble, Italian Films and enjoy very sociable sessions. We also have groups that take their activities out and about, visiting galleries, historical houses and gardens, whilst others walk together for the pleasure of getting to know our lovely Kent countryside better, Our new membership year starts on the lst of April, so now is a good time to contact us to find out what we have to offer in the coming months. World War One Exhibition- 100th Anniversary

Sunday 2nd August and Monday 3rd at Ringwould Village Hall Did your ancestor fight in WW1, was great granny working

on munitions, or perhaps you have a family anecdote about

Zeppelins? The Ringwould History Society is hoping to

stage an exhibition of memories, photos etc. over the

anniversary weekend in August. Your stories don’t have to

be local, just interesting for visitors. We are looking for

contributions from all our villages.

For instance, the man in the photo is my grandfather

John Henry Staddon who was Cornish. When war began he

was already 37, and also only 5ft1in tall so not first choice

for the Army. He and a friend travelled across Britain trying

to join up. In 1915 he sent a post card to my grandmother of

Birmingham Town Hall, saying he’d had no luck so far but

that he was off to Farnborough to try the Flying Corps. As you can see, he

managed to join up as a carpenter in the RFC and ironically actually served at the

airfield at St Margaret’s. I still have the post card and also a little wooden box

fashioned from a broken propeller.

His is just one story of many, I’m sure. Whichever village you are from we

would welcome your contributions, so please contact us to let us know what you

have that we can borrow. Original photographs will be copied and the copies put

on display, but we need to know now. Please contact me on 01304 361 030 or

email [email protected]. We promise to take care of any treasures lent to us.

Care Extra is a ‘not for profit’ Community Interest Company.

We offer companionship and respite care to people living in the Deal and Dover area.

Care Extra is a new company based in Deal, providing companionship and support to vulnerable adults living alone and respite for carers.

As a not for profit company we believe that we can offer a standard of care not currently available in the area, at affordable prices. Our main aim is to provide a quality service for our service users which promotes dignity and enhances the quality of their lives.

Depending on the needs and wishes of the service user, support workers can provide a range of services, for example, taking a service user out for a walk, shopping or to a so-cial club. The support worker may help the service user learn new skills following a stroke or another disabling event, or just engage in conversation and reminiscing. They can also do light housework. Our service users will be matched with one support worker to provide continuity of care.

Our support workers are recruited locally and trained and supervised by professional staff. If you would like to know more about this service and how we may be able to help you please contact: [email protected] or tel. 07715 847 356

Letter from Cornwall. A Matter of Timing.

It was something Cathy wrote in her October 2013 `Rural Roundup’ message that triggered the train of thought. She was talking of `life’ and `plans’. And apropos of very little my mind wandered off over rather a long span! She went on to speak of `that moment, in fact at this very moment` - and the neurons were in overdrive.

We were at about 40,000 feet or so on that day. `We’ being the crew of an RAF aircraft airborne one day in the mid 1960’s and on a routine training profile sortie somewhere over the British Isles. Just a normal day at the office one might say. Our captain (a Welshman) enquired of our air electronics officer (a Scot) whether he had done something or other – I forget what. `I did it just now’ came the reply. `When exactly’ the captain wanted to know. `Just now’ replied our doughty AEO. What the significance of the question was is completely lost to me now – but clearly the captain wanted to know what `just now’ meant – exactly. Was it five seconds ago, or five (or two) minutes? There followed a crew debate as to what `just now’ meant. It must have been a switch/lever/toggle/checklist item – whatever – that Jock had activated as part of his regular activity.

Our navigator/radar (a Channel Islander) opined that `just now’ meant just a little while ago (shall we say within a minute or so). I, the navigator/plotter, a Southerner (Dorset), could second that definition. I cannot recall the opinion of our co-pilot (a Midlander – north of the Thames at least), but dare I suggest that, as an Englishman, he might well have sided with the navigators? We did get a result. Jock meant that he had just done it – whatever it was! Liter-ally, just done it!

So there we are. `Just now’ to our Scot meant in the immediate past. To the rest of the crew it meant that it had been done not so very long ago – but undefined. Was it important? Well, crew communications were of some significance in any aeroplane! And what is my point? Well, we don’t have the problem in Cornwall. Cornishmen `do it dreckly’. As professor Joad might have said: “It all depends what you mean by `directly’.” Tony Burt

Living & working in Western Australia…Shelagh Muggeridge

Whoever would have thought that there was so much going on in Nature on Dungeness! Heather Chantler, Lifelong Learning Officer there, showed us lovely slides of all sorts of creatures and plants and birds found on this unique peninsular. Hot (well, sometimes) and windy in summer, cold and windy in winter, anything living there needs to be pretty hardy to survive! Methinks a visit will be arranged by our committee in the near future. I do hope so! Another new member has joined us this month. An April lunch and a visit to the Kent Show is on the programme, as well as a talk about Living and Working in Australia given by Shelagh Muggeridge next month. The meeting is in Kingsdown,Village Hall on 10th March at 2pm. Do join us! Christine Smith
