Introduction
Diamond drill holes BP-02-01, BP-02-02, and BP-02-03 were drilled at Devon and PardeeTownship in April 2002. The drill holes tested the Keweenawan stratigraphic section for mineralized gabbro intrusions at the base of barren Logan diabase sills. The total metreage of BQ core drilling is 1200 m. The results of the drilling are described herein.
Description of the property
The holes were drilled in Devon Township, 60 km south of Thunder Bay, Ontario. Access is by Highway 61, secondary township roads, and logging access roads. The project is a 50:50 joint venture between North Atlantic Nickel Corp. and Dumont Nickel Inc. The claim boundaries are illustrated in Figures 1, 2, and 3. The claim information is described in Table 1.
Geology
The area south of Thunder Bay is south of the boundary between the older Archean craton in the north and Paleo- to Mesoproterozoic basins in the south. In this area of the Southern Province (c.f. Ontario Geological Survey 1991, Bedrock Geology of Ontario, West-Central Sheet; Ontario Geological Survey, Map 2542, 1:1,000,000) the Paleoproterozoic Gunflint Formation and Rove Formation of the Animikie Supergroup are intruded by several Mesoproterozic gently-tilted diabase sills and subvertical dikes of the Keweenawan Supergroup. The Keweenawan intrusions of the western Lake Superior area include the Duluth Complex, Coldwell Complex, and Crystal Lake Gabbro (Figure 4).

The previous exploration by the private sector is as follows:
In 1962, Denison Mines conducted a magnetic survey (Lalonde, 1962) and prospecting/geology (Sozanski, 1962) on an easterly-trending dike of the Pigeon River suite (see below) that passes through claim 1232764. The dike shows up as a magnetic high, and small showings with up to Q.46% Cu and Q.38% Ni were noted.
Cominco drilled vertical holes DEV-1 and DEV-2 into the above Pigeon River dike immediately west of claim 1232764 (Fig.4; Tanaka, 1968). Hole DEV-1 was 50.57 m long, passed through 1.2 m of overburden, and then encountered gabbro dike for the entire hole. A weakly mineralized zone with fine-grained, disseminated pyrrhotite, chalcopyrite and pentlandite was intersected from 58.82 to 99.97 m. This 41.15m long section (presumably down the dip of the mineralization) averages Q.07% Cu and Q.05% Ni. Hole DEV-2 was 309.07 m long, and passed through less than 3.5 m of overburden before reaching the gabbroic dike which persisted for the length of the hole. Only minor specks of chalcopyrite were noted in this hole, and no assays were recorded.
In 1971 Olavi Isotalo excavated a trench on present claim 1231729, and drilled two closely-spaced holes on claim 1232760. Hole 1-1 was 76.20 m long, with a dip of -450 and an azimuth of 3350 (Kelly, 1971). The hole penetrated 4.09 vertical m of overburden, followed by a 29.3 m vertical thickness of diabase (likely a sill according to the map of Geul, 1970), and ended in sediments of the Rove Formation. Minor disseminated sulphides are reported in the diabase, but no assays are recorded. Hole I-2 was 76.35 m long, and likewise dipped -45" toward 3350 . The hole penetrated 5.60 vertical m of overburden, followed by a 7.77 m thick (vertical thickness) sill, argillite of the Rove Formation, a 20.26 m thick diabase sill commencing at a true depth of 31.89 m, and then ended in Rove Formation. Minor disseminated sulphides were noted in both sills, but no assays are provided.
Fleck Resources examined Isotalo's property in 1990, concentrating on ground in Pardee Township, immediately east of North Atlantic's claims. They completed a magnetic and a soil geochemistry, neither of which discovered anything of interest (McGoran, 1991).
North Atlantic Nickel drilled BP-99-2 in March, 1999 (North 1999). The drill hole was deepened as BP-00-01 by Dumont Nickel (North 2000). In BP-99-2 and 00-01 a gabbro channel approximately 200 m thick was intersected. Dumont Nickel also drilled BP-00-02 northwest of BP-99-2. In 2001 Dumont Nickel drilled BP-01-01 and BP-01-02 respectively 150 m southeast and 150 m northeast of BP-99-2 (North 2001).
Description of the drill holes
BP-02-01 and BP-02-02 tested the continuity of the gabbro channel intersected in BP- 01-01 and BP-01-02. The channel is interpreted as striking NE. The drill hole logs, sections, and assay certificates are in Appendix B. BP-02-03 was a test of the NE strike extension of the stratigraphy intersected in BP-01-01 and BP-01-02.
Several diabase and gabbro sills hosted within the Rove Formation were intersected however appreciable accumulations of sulphide minerals were not discovered.
10 Conclusions
There is wide variation in the nature and abundance of diabase/gabbro in the section, however in the area of these drill holes there are no appreciable sulphide accumulations and no further work is recommended.
Respectfully submitted,
MAFIC PLANET LIM&fED
Jon North, Ph.D. Geologist
