* What was accomplished under these goals (you must provide information for at least one of the 4categories below)?

1. A faculty recruitment and search committee development committee wasestablished and has been meeting on a weekly basis since May 1, 2013 with thegoal of having a workshop for search committees in place by August 15, 2013.The committee’s status report is provided in the special documents section of thisreport. (Goal 1)

2. Dr. Christine Shea, ADVANCE Co-­PI and Interim Vice Provost for FacultyDevelopment and Inclusive Excellence, is representing the provost’s office and theADVANCE Program on a committee formed by the UNH Faculty Senate to ensurethat all departments and colleges have clearly articulated standards for promotionto associate professor and promotion to full professor. Dr. Shea and Dr. KarenGraham, UNH ADVANCE Executive Director, will be meeting with Dr. ToddDeMitchell, incoming chair of the UNH Faculty Senate, prior to September 2013 todiscuss the status of the work to-­date and going forward to review the standardswith the objective of encouraging the advancement of women in the STEMdisciplines through the ranks. (Goal 1)

3. During spring semester 2013, an initial needs assessment was conductedthrough a series of focus groups with mid-­career faculty who had participated inthe ADVANCE PAID sponsored ADVANCing Your Career at UNH and Beyondprogram. Themes for the focus groups included issues involving mentoring,recruitment and retention, internal and external engagement, and equity(wage/professional;; race/gender). Results from the focus groups will inform thevarious UNH ADVANCE IT committees in these areas. (Goal 1)

4. Work was begun on establishing a visiting senior STEM female faculty scholarprogram. The program will allow UNH departments or colleges to apply to theADVANCE program for support to bring senior female faculty from otheruniversities for visits or extended stays with the purpose of developing researchcollaborations and providing role models for junior faculty. During Spring 2013,ADVANCE Co-­PIs Dr. Julie Williams and Dr. Sam Mukasa initiated conversationswith Dr. Gilda Barabino, who is a professor in Biomedical Engineering at GeorgiaTech and President of the Biomedical Engineering Society, an area of growingstrength at UNH. An initial conversation began with a 2-­hour meeting withDr.Barabino at the National Science Foundation in February, 2013 during a visit toNSF by Dr. Williams and a group of UNH faculty. The purpose of this initialmeeting was to discuss the possibility of partnering on projects of mutual scholarlyinterest. Dr. Barabino then visited UNH on April 1, 2013 and met with UNH facultyand Dean Sam Mukasa. Preliminary discussions were held during this visit aboutthe possibility of a visiting professorship for Dr. Barabino at the University of NewHampshire. Additional follow-­up conversations have taken place and others areplanned for Fall 2013 . Early in Fall 2013, additional nominations will be sought forthis program from departments in the College of Engineering and PhysicalSciences (CEPS) and the College of Life Sciences and Agriculture (COLSA). The

UNH ADVANCE Leadership Team will work collaboratively with the Deans,Directors, and Department Chairs from these colleges to implement this program.(Goal 1)

5. A committee was established and charged with developing the learningobjectives, content, and policy governing the Professional DevelopmentLeadership Program. The committee met on a bi-­weekly basis during SpringSemester 2013 to develop an outline for the program. The committee’s report isincluded in the special documents section of this report. (Goal 2)

6. We began work on establishing a formalized mentoring program by gatheringinformation through focus groups with women faculty who had participated in theADVANCing Your Career at UNH and Beyond program supported through theUNH ADVANCE PAID initiative and women and men faculty who had participatedin various aspects of the UNH ADVANCE PAID grant such as the CollaborativeScholarship Awards. Results from the focus groups and a short survey that will besent to departments early in Fall 2013 will guide the design of the specific types ofmentoring to be expanded, implemented, and assessed under the ADVANCE ITinitiative. An ADVANCE faculty fellow will be recruited and appointed in earlySeptember 2013 to work with the ADVANCE Executive Director in leading thiseffort. (Goal 2)

7. A preliminary analysis of 2008 UNH institutional data indicates that, with fewexceptions, men on average earn higher wages than women at every rank and inevery college. A postdoctoral student with a background in economics has beenhired (appointment to begin in August 2013) to conduct the wage analysis as wellas to be part of the internal research team. The proposed analysis will investigatewhether differences in wages among male and female faculty at UNH can beexplained in part by gender differences in bargaining skills. This insight isexpected to make a contribution to the growing literature on wage equation ingeneral and studies on academic wage differences in particular. This informationwill also help us establish a policy that a wage equity study at UNH be conductedon a regular basis (every five years) to ensure that those making decisions onhiring and promotion are aware of the inequities that may exist. Results of thestudy will be shared with key constituencies in order to develop a policy goingforward. (Goal 3)

8. Dr. John Aber, Provost and PI of the UNH ADVANCE grant has taken a majorleadership role in communicating the importance of the ADVANCE grant to theUNH community. He was an active participant/leader at the NSF ADVANCE PIconference;; he has been engaged significantly in decision-­making andprioritization for ADVANCE programs and personnel. He led the discussion aboutthe formation of the internal advisory committee (see below) and he has led andset up the role of ADVANCE with the Deans and other members of the Provost'sCouncil. (Goal 5)

9. The UNH ADVANCE Internal Advisory Committee was established and throughthis group and other venues the project is being communicated to the broadercommunity. See more on dissemination efforts below. (Goal 5)

* What opportunities for training and professional development has the project provided?

Two major professional development initiatives of the UNH ADVANCE IT grant are underdevelopment; a training program for search committees and a leadership professionaldevelopment program for department chairs and emerging leaders. These programs will beimplemented in AY 2013-­‐2014 and policies will be developed to require that all searchcommittee members and all department chairs are required to participate in the programs. These initiatives provide professional development opportunities for the participants as wellas for the committee members as they network and read/discuss the literature and bestpractices as they develop the curriculum for the initiatives.

The ADVANCE IT program will be co-­‐sponsoring with the Social Justice Educators group andthe Office of the Vice Provost of Faculty Development and Inclusive Excellence, a workshop,Working with Faculty Around Inclusion, Bias, and Social Justice, scheduled forWednesday, July 10th. The workshop will be facilitated by Dr. Sherwood Smith, Director of theCenter for Cultural Pluralism, University of Vermont. Members of the committees developingthe programs for search committees and department chairs will be attending.

* How have the results been disseminated to communities of interest?

i. A UNH ADVANCE IT Kick-­Off event for all faculty and staff was held on April 30, 2013. Program for theevent included Dr. Patrice McDermott, University of Maryland Baltimore County as the keynote speaker and apanel discussion including Dr. Wayne Jones from the University of Michigan and Dr. Sam Mukasa, Dr. KarenGraham, Dr. Charles Zercher, and Dr. Jessica Bolker from UNH. Informational materials were generated topromote the event and describe the proposed goals and major initiatives of the UNH ADVANCE program.

ii. Articles on the UNH ADVANCE project have appeared in the local newspapers and in the UNH CampusJournal.

iii. Members of the UNH ADVANCE Leadership Team met with UNH Provost Council, Executive Committeesof UNH Colleges and Institutes, and members of UNH ADVANCE Internal Steering Committee to buildawareness, disseminate information of UNH ADVANCE goals and activities, and disseminate results.

iv. Co-­PI Dr, Christine Shea presented an overview of UNH ADVANCE

and its goals at the NH Inclusive Excellence in Higher Education Group meeting in March. The group iscollaborating on a proposal to fund a series of workshops on Inclusive Teaching that would be held at threecollege campuses in NH.

v. Dr. Karen Graham, Executive Director of UNH ADVANCE was asked to join the University on InclusiveExcellence and Equity. Having ADVANCE represented on this committee will enhance communications andsustainability of ADVANCE Initiatives.

vi. The UNH ADVANCE PI and Co-­PI team attended the NSF-­sponsored ADVANCE PI meeting March 3-­5,2013 in Alexandria VA and presented a poster on the conceptual framework for the UNH ADVANCE socialscience study.

vii. A UNH ADVANCE website has been established, http://www.unh.edu/advance/

viii. Through membership on various UNH ADVANCE IT committees and

collaborative efforts, the ADVANCE Leadership Team is strategically networking with key constituencies. Todate these organizations include: the UNH Social Justice Educators Group (Group Member Tara Flippo is onthe Faculty Recruitment Committee), the UNH Faculty Senate (Chair Dr. Todd DeMitchell is on the

ix. Members of the UNH ADVANCE team have begun to reach out to colleagues at other ADVANCE programsto share information and best practices;; these include University of Maine, Jackson State University, University of Maryland Baltimore County, University of Michigan, and Howard University.

Evidence of impact of the UNH ADVANCE program will be provided through both internal and external evaluation

efforts. The external evaluation will be conducted by the project’s external evaluator, Dr. Mariko Chang. A status

report on the external evaluation effort has been uploaded in the special document section of this report.

The internal research/evaluation team is led by Dr. Vicki Banyard, psychology. Dr. Banyard’s team will conduct the

social science research study (see special documents section for the description of the social science research study

submitted with our original proposal) and provide oversight for the internal data collection effort. The 2012 report on

institutional data has been uploaded in the special documents section of this report along with Promotion and Tenure

information. Request for attrition data has been made and should be received shortly. It will be uploaded as soon as it

is available.

It took much longer than anticipated to hire a Program Coordinator. As a result, we have fallen slightly

behind on some initiatives. The ADVANCE Program Coordinator will start July 15, 2013.

The implication of a delay in hiring the program coordinator above is that we will be under budget in year 1 but

expect to be back on track in year 2.
