Pinchas Zukermanperforms Elgar’sViolin ConcertoTuesday 14th April 2015, 7.30pm

A glorious programme that opens with Beethoven’s noble Coriolan Overture – a work full of contrast and drama. At the heart of the programme is Beethoven’s delightful Symphony No.6, popularly known as the ‘Pastoral’ Symphony for its vivid depictions of the charms of country life.

Pinchas Zukerman (pictured) is renowned for his interpretation of Elgar’s Violin Concerto – a work of great lyricism and power, with a violin part that combines virtuosity with emotional depth.

Belshazzar’s FeastWednesday 6th May 2015, 7.30pm

A sumptuous concert of English masterworks, including Elgar’s evocative Sea Pictures performed by mezzo-soprano Sarah Connolly (pictured) – a singer internationally celebrated for her exceptional musicality and expressive voice.

The concert opens with Elgar’s charming Cockaigne Overture, which paints a vivid depiction of a day in London, and culminates with Walton’s magnifi cent Belshazzar’s Feast. For this grand-scale masterpiece, the Orchestra is joined by The Bach Choir and the outstanding bass-baritone Neal Davies.

Young Spanish maestro Eduardo Portal conducts Rimsky-Korsakov’s magnifi cent Scheherazade – a musical portrait of One Thousand and One Nights. A haunting solo violin (Scheherazade), menacing brass fanfares (the Sultan) and the strumming of a harp present a mystical far-away land. The Orchestra also performs Ravel’s jazz-infl uenced Piano Concerto, featuring one of Spain’s most exciting young artists,

Javier Perianes.

Natalie Clein performs DvorákTuesday 2nd June 2015, 7.30pm

Internationally acclaimed cellist Natalie Clein (pictured) performs Dvorák’s eloquent and moving Cello Concerto – a heartfelt and emotional work, written during the composer’s second trip to America. The RPO also performs the popular orchestral suite of Stravinsky’s The Firebird, which paints a captivating picture of the Russian folk tales of the magical glowing bird, from the ‘Infernal Dance’ of King Kashchei to its shimmering fi nale.
