WORLD champion JennaDowning could return to in-lineskating next month following aknee injury.
Jenna, 22, of East EndCrescent, Royston, has beentraining at Royston LeisureCentre following the injury shesustained at a competition inLiverpool last May.
She performed a backflip, which went wrong, leaving herwith a dislocated knee and tornligaments, an injury whichrequired surgery.
Jenna said: “I can’t wait. I hadthe accident in May so it’ll takeme a few months to get back tohow I was before.
“I have an intensiverehabilitation programme andphysio and I spend a lot of timein the gym strengthening myleg so it can support my knee.”
Jenna said she had been doing‘basic skating’ on the street andwill return to training inLiverpool next month if she getsthe go ahead from herconsultant.
She added: “I don’t have atarget, I’m just taking it slowly.
“I don’t want to compete andnot do very well because of myknee or because I haven’ttrained.
“I want to be back to fullhealth before I compete.”
Although she will be skating,Jenna’s knee won’t be 100 percent back to normal until July.
“I’ve got to be really carefuluntil then but I can get back onthe ramp and start building itup. I’ll try some tricks I used todo and if they’re ok I’ll trysomething more difficult,” shesaid.
Jenna has been a professionalin-line skater since she was 12years old and was crowned LGAction Sports World Championin 2008. She has been BritishChampion on ten occasions andis a former X-Games silvermedallist.

FIRE-FIGHTERS at the retainedfire station in Royston havebeen banned from enteringshops which are on firebecause they haven’t had thecorrect training.
The officers have been told they ‘donot meet the right criteria’ and needtraining in scenarios involving chemi-cals, high-rise fires and aviation fires, following a report by the Health andSafety Executive.
But a retained fireman said people’slives were in danger.
He said: “If Cudworth are out, thenearest pump is Barnsley. What hap-pens if a shop is on fire and it spreadsto a flat? God forbid anything hap-pens.”
The source said retained officers havehad the same training as full-time fire-fighters.
He added: “We have a number ofhours a month for drill time where wepractice scenarios and they are sayingwe don’t meet the criteria. We getthree hours a week but it’s got to be23 hours a month so we are short by13 hours.”
John Gilliver, chairman of the FireBrigades’ Union, said the HSE report
investigated eight brigades and high-lights ‘incompetencies’ which neededbringing up to date and that the movewas only temporary.
He added: “We, as a union, havebeen saying fire-fighters, no matterwhat shift system they work, should becompetent in all areas. For it to havebeen identified that not all firefightersare competent has being worrying forus so we’re happy with the actionSouth Yorkshire Fire and Rescue hastaken to get this back up to speed assoon as possible.”
Coun Jim Andrews, chairman of theSouth Yorkshire Fire and RescueAuthority, said: “They (retained offi-cers) will have to do community safetywork and they are being asked to putin some extra training days but thisshould be sorted out in the next cou-ple of months.
“Hopefully it won’t put people’s livesin danger. There is more whole timeresponse and as I understand it there isas little as 60 per cent turn out rates forretained services.
“On the other hand there are manywhole time fire-fighters who doretained duties. It’s only a small part ofretained crews that need the training.”
