and improving the academic program as well as finding new ways to help our boys develop character and values that will truly make them Georgians.
In addition to the progress of our educational offering, I am also very proud of the progress made at the board table over the last 12 months. The most significant project this year has been the development of a five-year strategic plan for the school. This important initiative was co-chaired by Shelly Haber and was supported by an engaged and passionate strategic planning committee. The strategic plan is grounded in our values and aspirational in its outlook as we re-imagined how the school can prepare boys for a world of rapid change. I know Stephen is excited by the direction of the strategic plan and the guidance it will provide over the next several years.
Another focus of the Board this year has been to improve communication and transparency with our RSGC community. We made great strides under the leadership of Jim Crossland, Chair of the Communications Committee. In May, we held our very first Town Hall meeting to share information about the school and the work of the Board. We have also revamped the Governance section of the website to include profiles of board members and to provide regular updates of Board activities.
In a year where the focus moved from building to planning, it is easy to forget the great work done by the Facilities Committee, led by Mike Barker, in completing the construction and by Cathy Bateman, Chair of Finance, in ensuring our finances are managed prudently as we continue to invest in the future of our boys.
On a personal note, I can’t express how happy I am to be welcoming Paul Clark ’85 as the incoming Chair of the Board of Governors and Jim Crossland as Vice-Chair. I know that Paul and Jim, in collaboration with the rest of the Board and Senior Leadership team, will do a fantastic job of guiding the school through the implementation of the strategic plan.
I will close by thanking the departing Board members who have given so much time and expertise to the school over many years. I would like to commend Tye Farrow, Rob Keilty, Wanda Ho, Guy Burry, Shelly Haber and Kimberly Cudney for their exceptional service to the College and for the legacies they leave behind. We are forever grateful!
I have had an incredible journey through this wonderful school from parent to Board member to Chair of the Board. I’ve loved every minute of it and particularly love the school for the education and community it provided my son, Derek, who after an amazing gap year is quickly settling into first year at the University of St. Andrews. It has been a tremendous honour to Chair the Board of RSGC. As I say farewell, I do so with pride and confidence in a community that will always feel like home to me.
Ruth WoodsChair of the Board of Governors, 2011-2013
Letter from the Chair
As I approach the end of my two-year term as Chair of Royal St. George’s College, it is a wonderful opportunity
to reflect on the progress at the school and the positive impact it has had on the boys. I am very proud of the accomplishments of our dedicated board members and Stephen Beatty ’86 and his senior team.
The most visible sign of progress is the newly transformed campus with its bright, flexible learning places and enhanced play space – but what is going on behind the façade is an equally compelling story. Stephen and his engaged team of educators are constantly innovating

8 Royal St. George’s College 2012-13 Annual Report
Welcome to our new Board Members 2013-2014
Adrian C. Lang
Adrian Lang is Associate General Counsel, Legal Cor-porate and Compliance, with BMO Financial Group, where she leads a litigation team. She comes to our Board with significant previous and ongoing Board experience on the Board of Directors at both the The Advo-cates Society and The Canadian Stage Company (where she is also currently the Chair of the Board). Adrian also sits on the Advisory Board of Young Woman in Law, and served on the board of the YWCA Toronto from 2005-2009. In 2008, she was recognized by Lexpert as one of the Canada’s Leading Lawyers under 40. Adrian’s son Gavin is in the Class of 2020.
Jennifer Keenan
Jennifer Keenan has an extensive background in the not-for-profit sector and is presently the Director of Outreach for Connect Legal. She is a board member of Dignitas International and a past Chair of the Advi-sory Board of the Give a Day to World AIDS Campaign that worked to raise funds to fight the sub-Saharan African HIV/AIDS pandemic. A former immigration lawyer, she was a Bencher for the Law Society of Upper Canada and in 2011 was awarded the Lexpert-Zenith Award for Philanthropy that Impacts Children. Jennifer’s son Cameron is in the Class of 2016 and her son Matthew graduated in 2013.
Ryan Cookson, ’03
Representing our young alumni, Ryan Cookson ’03 will bring a wealth of RSGC experience to our Board this year. After spending six years at RSGC, Ryan attended Queen’s University as a Chancellor’s Scholar where he earned a Political Science degree, graduat-ing with distinction. He then went on to earn a J.D. at Western University’s Faculty of Law and became a Law Clerk with Court of Appeal for Ontario, where he clerked for the Honourable Justices Janet M. Simmons and Russell G. Juri-ansz. Ryan is currently a lawyer in the Litigation Group at Goodmans LLP.
Royal St. George’s College 2012-13 Annual Report 9
Dear Fellow Georgians,
The most resonant image of the 2012/13 school year for me is captured in a photograph that resides in See House. It
is a shot of our retiring Chief Financial Officer, Andy Whiteley, proudly dressed in the full regalia of a Medieval knight. Andy has his sword held high above his head and is about to cut the ribbon and officially open the new wing of See House.
I love this photograph because it is so quintessentially Georgian. No line-up of VIP’s in hardhats brandishing oversized scissors. Instead of being ceremonial it is celebratory and it is fun. We had all watched and waited for a long time to open our new facility and, under Andy’s careful oversight, it had become a reality.
As we opened the new building this year, I said in my remarks that I wish I could have thanked the visionary Board, staff, parents and students who had the foresight to build Founders’ Hall, the building we simply call the Senior School, which opened in 1973. It was this building, with labs, a library, a gymnasium and proper classrooms that transformed what was essentially a church basement school into a lasting institution. Years from now I believe we will look back on the 2012/13 school year and the transformation of our campus as being just as important to the long-term viability of RSGC as was the completion of Founders’ Hall.
As the numbers in this Annual Report demonstrate, the College is thriving. Enrolment is at capacity, we are financially sound, a broad cross-section of our constituency support the College financially and our facility supports
Message from the Headmaster
Stephen Beatty ’86Headmaster
a wide-ranging curricular and co-curricular program.
The numbers cannot speak to the spirit, culture and feel of the College. Our boys are known and loved, challenged and inspired. They are surrounded by adults who are themselves learners and love both their work and their students. Over the course of the 2012/13 school year a collaborative process guided the creation of a new Five Year Strategic Plan that will guide the growth and continued improvement of the College.
As we approach the celebration of the 50th anniversary of the opening of the College on September 7, 1964, the future of our College seems very bright indeed.

possible, we sent out a separate Guild mailing with a welcome letter, important dates for the term, and a volunteer contact sheet. The response was very positive, and we will continue this form of communication going forward.
In October, we launched a new event, The Knights Fayre & Community BBQ and pumpkin patch. Organized by a group of Guild members, it was a huge success in bringing our community together and celebrating our new campus.
Our two biggest fundraisers, the Mistletoe Market and Cocktail Reception and our Used Book Sale, were also very successful. While they continue to be a financial success, they are also an integral part of community building and “friend”raising.
At the end of the year we decided to start the process of organizing two new initiatives for the Guild. In an effort to reach out to new parents we pulled together a group of people from our Parent Ambassadors and linked them with new families who had similar-aged boys and lived in the same area. These new families were sent emails in the summer to welcome them to the school and offer any help or answer any questions they may have coming to RSGC. Furthermore, starting Fall 2013 we decided to initiate a Guild Newsletter that will be emailed out to the parent community once a month with updates, information and opportunities for Guild involvement.
The current school year has started off with great success with Gail Graham leading the way as President. The Parent Ambassador Buddies program has already been very well received from the new families. Our Guild newsletter and standardization of communication is underway
and Gail is initiating a Guild Funds Request Form and Headmaster’s Request List that will be a positive step for clarity, communication and transparency.
We are so incredibly fortunate to have such a large volunteer base of 150 people at our small school. Without this energetic, supportive community of volunteers, our accomplishments would not be possible. On behalf of the Guild High 5 and Executive, I thank you for all that you do for the RSGC community.
Respectfully submitted,
Carolyn CullenRSGC Parents’ Guild President, 2012-2013
Message from the President of the Georgian Parents’ Guild
On behalf of the Georgian Parents’ Guild I am pleased to report on the achievements over the 2012-2013
school year, and give a brief review of what we intend to accomplish over the current school year.
This past year we successfully contributed another $50,000 in year three of our commitment to the Capital Campaign of $250,000. We ended the year in a healthy position as we move forward into the next school year and we are so grateful to everyone who contributed to the Campaign.
In an effort to reach out to as many RSGC parents at the beginning of the school year as

Along with the current students, the Alumni Association has also benefitted from the newly renovated school spaces. In the Fall of 2012 the Association hosted the annual Old Boys Dinner and made use of several of the new spaces. The Old Boys Dinner has seen remarkable growth in recent years and the 2012 dinner was the most widely attended to date.
Following the Old Boys Dinner, the Alumni Association Executive engaged the Alumni community with two online surveys. The surveys, sent to attendees and non-attendees, sought to capture the attitude of the community towards the dinner and the Association in general. The results have given the Alumni Association Executive several new directions and ideas to be implemented over the next few years.
In April 2013, the Association hosted an evening of wine tasting in the beautiful new third-floor art space in See House. The elegant space leant itself perfectly to a fun evening of reminiscences and fine wines. In May, the Alumni Association hosted the annual Ball Hockey Tournament on the Gage Love Tarmac. Both events were showcases for the newly renovated school and allowed many Old Boys to see where their Capital Campaign dollars were spent.
Mentoring has become a large part of the Association’s energy owing to the overwhelming success of our annual ’Speed Mentoring’ event at the school. The Speed Mentoring program brings back 30 alumni to mentor members of the graduating class in a short format over the space of an afternoon. Riding on the success of this event, the Association has taken up a new
mentoring initiative – the Alumni Networking Forum. Held in the Spring of 2013 the inaugural Forum brought together Old Boys of all ages to discuss careers and to network among their peers.
On a personal note, my mission as RSGCAA President has been to engage current students. To that end, the Executive, in conjunction with the school, has minted a new Grade 12 Steward position that will serve his classmates as Alumni Association Liaison. Our first steward was Owen Burry ’13. Owen used surveys, announcements and interviews to engage his fellow Grade 12s and discover ways in which the Alumni Association could help them. It is hoped that this heightened conversation about alumni life at the school level will create dividends down the road with a more highly engaged young alumni community.
Final mention must go to Paul Clark ’85. Paul takes over as the Board of Governors Chair for the 2013-2014 school year. Paul is a proud Old Boy who has contributed to the RSGC community in numerous ways. The Alumni Association congratulates him on his new role and is confident it will lead to years of success and the further advancement of RSGC.

Message from the President of the Alumni Association
Colin Watson ’94President, RSGCAA
The 2012-13 school year has finally seen the school and the wider RSGC community reap the rewards of the
tireless toil of the last few years. The Alumni Association is proud to have taken a leadership role in the recent Capital Campaign. Much credit goes to Guy Burry ’77 as Campaign Co-Chair for the successes of the development project that has completely transformed the school. Alumni Campaign Co-Chairs Jamie Peters ’90 and Jamie Lint ’98 were also committed volunteers who worked vigilantly within the Alumni community to raise capital for the Campaign.

With almost $6,000,000 raised, the funds will support the enhanced learning and social experience of our students as a result of creating new facilities and financial aid opportunities:
•New multi-use studio theatre and spacious, naturally lit art studio
•Much-needed new classrooms and seminar rooms
•An additional acre of outdoor space for physical education, athletics, recreation and leisure
•Increased endowment, to fund a greater number of significant scholarships and bursariesWe would like to take this opportunity to
thank the many volunteers for the countless hours they spent meeting with our community and raising the much-needed funds for this campaign. We would also like to thank our donors who so
generously contributed to this campaign. It was our pleasure meeting with you and getting to know you and your family better.
Although both our sons have graduated from RSGC, we have hopes that some day our grandsons will be the beneficiaries of the RSGC community’s generosity, as will the many boys that follow.
Thank you for your spirit of philanthropy and willingness to give!
Sincerely,
Wanda Ho and Guy Burry ’77Campaign Co-Chairs
Campaign UpdateHonouring Our Past | Building Our Future
When we first agreed to chair the Honouring Our Past | Building Our Future campaign two years
ago, we did so knowing that the strength of our community, both current and alumni families, would help us achieve this common goal for our boys. This project has undoubtedly been the most transformative project in our College’s history.
The campaign was not only about improving facilities, it was also about transforming the RSGC student experience and ensuring the College’s strength for future students.

16 Royal St. George’s College 2012-13 Annual Report
The completion of the campus redevelopment project was a definite highlight for the 2012-2013 school year.
As the landscape additions came to life in the Spring and we watched the boys enjoy the new outdoor facilities, it became even more apparent that the redevelopment was worth the time and resources it took to complete the project.
The College is fortunate to be at full enrolment, which will help us to continue to prudently manage our financial position and the debt obligations we have entered into for the construction project. We will continue to build conservative budgets and ensure that funds are being spent wisely and consistent with the strategic objectives outlined in the strategic plan recently approved by the Board of Governors.
Once the construction was complete in April, we were able to convert the interim construction loan into permanent financing facilities. At June 30th, the outstanding loans totaled approximately $6.7 million, representing an increase of approximately $4 million year over year. We also had another $3.7 million in undrawn facilities which are available to the College when required. The College was very fortunate to secure the financing during a historically low interest rate environment.
Our College community generously contributed another $1.2 million during the year to our capital campaign, which we were able to apply to the construction project and $167,000 in other restricted and unrestricted contributions. We thank them and also those who made pledges for future years.
Our cash position of $1.3 million is low at June 30th as we took advantage of the opportunity to pay down our revolving debt facility and minimize the interest costs to the College. Cash flow generated from operations
before depreciation was consistent with the prior year at just over $1.9 million. Approximately $5.7 million was invested in capital assets during the year compared to $5.9 million last year. Consistent with 2012, the majority of this balance represents investment in the construction project. Our total investment in capital assets, net of depreciation, at the end of June 2013 is $22.7 million compared to $18.4 million at the end of June 2012.
Once again, our enrolment for the upcoming year is very strong, at 446 students. We will continue to be responsible with the funds entrusted to us for the education of our boys.
I want to extend a very special welcome to our new CFO, Jane Nyman, who joined Stephen’s leadership team in January this year. She has brought great calm, wisdom and perspective to the role of CFO at the school and, personally for me, been an absolute pleasure to work with. She is a great successor to Andy Whiteley who, as many of you know, was a pillar of the school for so many years and deserves a thrilling and happy retirement. Thanks also to the Audit and Finance Committee – Wanda Ho, Kimberley Cudney, Paul Clark, Bruce MacLaren and Mike Barker – who were engaged throughout this exciting year of major expenditure and financing decisions.
If you have any questions in respect of these financial statements, please call Jane Nyman or me.
