Dear Parents,

It seems a lifetime ago that I was trundling back up the A303 after having watched the U11 girls compete very

successfully at the National U11 IAPS Hockey Finals. They eventually came 17th out of 216 teams that entered.

Thank you to all those who came and supported on the day and many congratulations to coaches Mrs Lloyd and Miss

Brennan.

My feet are still drying out from a very wet Saturday morning spent refereeing at the U9 tournament. The A team were

successful once again and it was wonderful to see the depth of talent in this year group with the B&C teams playing

some superb football as well. This is the third tournament they have won this season and they currently stand on top of

the schoolsfootball table having only lost one game of the 20 they have played. Thank you to Mr Lloyd for organising an

excellent event and to Mr Ward, Mr Swann, Mr Davies and Mr Jewiss for providing team and refereeing support all

morning.

Thursday saw two extremes for the HM this week as I went from a very enjoyable and convivial HM’s lunch with some

current parents to the terror of taking horse-riding club after school. To put this into perspective the last time I rode a

horse was circa 1985 on a pony trekking holiday in Wales that resulted in me being thrown off and breaking my collar

bone. Imagine my delight when the group insisted I ‘rode’ with them. After the initial fear of actually mounting my steed,

the technique came flooding back and I was soon trotting around the ‘school’ with the other members of the club.

Thank you to the riding-club for helping me conquer my fear!

The recorder soiree was a great success this week with a multitude of talent on display. Thank you to Mrs Mosely and

Miss Fox for supporting our young musicians.

Please pay particular attention to the information in the bulletin and Friday emails this week as there are lots of events

happening in the next few weeks that we would not want you to miss out on.

We are looking forward to seeing you all at the 1853 Society Christmas Fair tomorrow, which will be taking place from

12 noon - 4pm. So empty those piggy banks, dig down the back of the sofa and come and enjoy some festive fun

throughout the afternoon. Thank you in advance for all your generous donations and to those of you who are giving up

your time to run the event.

Mr James C Thompson

Anti-Bullying week shines a spotlight on bullying and encourages all children, teachers and parents to take action against bullying throughout the year.

This week the Junior School has focused on anti-bullying in PSHE lessons and assemblies, supporting children to celebrate differences and to stop bullying. Senior School pupils have visited every lunch time to read stories to our younger children with clear anti-bullying messages. Also years 3 & 4 have participated in anti-bullying workshops.

On Friday the Year 1 classes went to the Museum Of childhood.

On arrival we were taken into an amazing workshop where we got a chance to play with Diablo, Cup-and-Ball and spinning tops. We learnt all about the toys that children used to play with in older times.

The highlights of our day were the amazing dollhouses which we really wanted to get into. The children recognised some of the toys and the teachers recognised a few more.

A trip down the memory lane for some of us! We were very pleased with the behaviour of the children, who set an example to everyone while having lots of fun. Some of us were even able to have a peaceful nap on the journey back.

Rain doesn’t stop the Royal RussellUnder 9 Football Tournament!

On a very damp Saturday morning, Royal Russell hosted their Under 9 football tournament. Many schools were attending for the first time and there was a very high

standard of competition in both the A team and B team tournaments.

Page 17: Royal Russell Junior School Bulletinfluencycontent-schoolwebsite.netdna-ssl.com/FileCluster/...drawing 1-1 with the eventual group winners and winning 2 games in a row. It was all

C team win a match, B team finish 3rd and A team take the title!

The B team produced an emphatic 6-0 win against Banstead Prep and managed to see off the Royal Russell C team to take third place in the competition.

The C team got a very impressive draw against runners up Elmhurst and they also beat Banstead to finish a very respectable fourth.

The A team scored the most goals in the tournament on their way to the semi-finals. A victory on penalties over Northcote Lodge was followed by a final against Downsend, who had beaten them earlier. A tight final went to a penalty shootout and 3 decisive penalties were enough to give Royal Russell the title.

Page 18: Royal Russell Junior School Bulletinfluencycontent-schoolwebsite.netdna-ssl.com/FileCluster/...drawing 1-1 with the eventual group winners and winning 2 games in a row. It was all

The Under 9 A Team’s success this term has been quite exceptional. They have won all three tournaments they have entered and have won a whopping 90% of their matches. This places them top of the school sports performance tables in the country for their age group.

U9 Hockey Lingfield Tournament

A great afternoon of Hockey for the U9 girls playing 4 matches against tough opposition. The girls played very well together with solid teamwork. They won 2 matches and drew 2 others!

They finished in 2nd place, a fantastic result!

Thanks to Miss Luke & Mr Edie for taking the team.

U11 Hockey IAPS National finals!

The girls travelled to Millfield for the IAPS National finals and they were raring to go! The first 2 games were tough and despite some excellent chances we lost both 0-1.

The girls changed into their maroon shirts and fought hard drawing 1-1 with the eventual group winners and winning 2 games in a row. It was all down to the last game and despite 100% effort Stroud scored to take win.

Page 22: Royal Russell Junior School Bulletinfluencycontent-schoolwebsite.netdna-ssl.com/FileCluster/...drawing 1-1 with the eventual group winners and winning 2 games in a row. It was all

Once all the scores had been collated the girls finished 5th in their group putting them in the top 20 IAPS schools - a truly amazing achievement they should be very proud of. 216 schools entered the competition so this is very impressive. They have made Royal Russell history and we will be looking to repeat it again soon.

Thanks to the parents for their support and to coach Miss Brennan for all her hard work preparing the team.

This half term, we have thoroughly enjoyed celebrating the birthdays and achievements of our Lower Junior children in our FridayCelebration Assemblies. Our first Celebration Assembly after half term will be on Friday 3rd November and you are warmly invited to join us from 2.40pm for a 2.50pm start.

Please be aware that when we return after Half Term, we will be celebrating birthdays on the following days:

24th November: No Celebration Assembly on day of School Disco.

1st December: Birthdays between 27th November – 3rd December

8th December: Birthdays between 4th – 31st December

Any birthdays taking place between 1st - 14th January will be celebrated when we return to school in Spring Term.

Page 27: Royal Russell Junior School Bulletinfluencycontent-schoolwebsite.netdna-ssl.com/FileCluster/...drawing 1-1 with the eventual group winners and winning 2 games in a row. It was all

Please could we remind you that we have taken the decision that we will no longer be allowing children to bring in edible treats / cakes to celebrate their birthday at school. We have an increasing number of specific dietary requirements and severe food allergies within school that are resulting in increasing numbers of children missing out on these treats and the distribution of the treats / cakes being more complicated and time consuming.

To link in with our current focus on ‘Reading Cloud’, we are suggesting that if your child would like to bring in a book as a gift, that would be greatly appreciated. They can then share the book with the class and it will then have a presentation label stuck in the front of the book before being added to our school Library. If you are in the Upper Juniors and you are looking for an inspiration for the book then please use ‘Reading Cloud’ as this will tell you what books we already have in the Library and books your child might like.
