Royal Naval Dockyard:
There is so much to do directly where the ships
dock, where prices are the same if not cheaper
than anywhere else in Bermuda both in the
stores and restaurants and tours.
You can do it all in The Dockyard!
History, heritage – and a whole lot more! There’s
something for everyone at The Royal Naval
Dockyard, Bermuda’s premier tourist
destination. Our beautifully restored historical
buildings, surrounded by sparkling crystal clear
waters at the western tip of the island, provide a
spectacular backdrop to everything from great
food and shopping to wonderful water sports,
magnificent museums, working arts and crafts
studios – and even the chance to swim with
dolphins!
Adventure awaits you in The Royal Naval
Dockyard, an experience unlike anywhere else
in Bermuda.
HISTORY
The British Royal Navy established the Royal Naval Dockyard after defeat
in the American War of Independence which left Britain without a secure
operational base between Halifax, Nova Scotia and the West Indies.
Bermuda was quickly identified as a strategic mid-Atlantic location where
a secure anchorage was developed for the Navy’s fleet and a dockyard,
victualling yard and ordnance depot to maintain the ships.
The Royal Navy purchased 200 acres on Ireland Island in the west end. In 1809 work began on the North
America and West Indies Station, as the base became known, and continued into the early 20th Century. It was
a huge project that involved large land reclamations and the labour of thousands of convicts from Britain who
were housed in appalling conditions aboard rotting hulks of former naval fighting ships.
The Dockyard became a major factor in Bermuda’s economy, employing more than 1,000 Bermudians at one
time in the 19th Century, accounting for more than 15 percent of Bermuda’s income. As a centre of marine
technology and inventiveness, the Dockyard afforded generations of Bermudians first-rate training in plumbing,
carpentry, and other trades.
It was from Dockyard in the summer of 1814 that a British
force of 5,000 troops and Royal Marines set sail for the
famous attack on Washington, D. C. and Baltimore during
the War of 1812. It was from one of the British ships that
a prisoner, Baltimore lawyer Francis Scott Key, penned the
words to Star-Spangled Banner, after seeing the American
flag still flying above Fort McHenry after a heavy
bombardment.
Dockyard remained an important strategic base for a further 139 years. During the First World War (1914-18)
and Second World War (1939-1945), it was a bustling, vibrant port with floating docks where ships were
repaired for combat deployment. Nearly 600 vessels were repaired and put back into action. In addition, sea
patrols from here escorted people from and to the UK and Canada, and German soldiers passed through
Dockyard on their way to POW camps in Canada.
Also, antisubmarine training was undertaken in the Dockyard area. In more recent years, NATO vessels have
stopped at Dockyard for some well-deserved rest and relaxation. A wall to the south of the Clocktower is
decorated with ships’ crests, recording vessels that have called at Dockyard’s wharf. Notable amongst the
crests is one painted by HRH Prince Charles on a visit to Bermuda in 1977.
The Royal Navy left the main Dockyard in 1951 although the naval base was not officially closed until 1995. For
the next two decades the area was largely abandoned until the Bermuda Maritime Museum was officially
opened in the fortress known as the Keep and its success led government to begin to restore the Dockyard as a
cultural tourism destination.
In 1982, Bermuda passed the West End Development Corporation (WEDCO) act and more than $60 million was
pumped into Dockyard, transforming the once-unused edifice into one of the islands’ biggest tourist
attractions. Today Dockyard is the most visited site in Bermuda, underscoring the value of architectural
heritage to the tourism industry, and the Maritime Museum provides a fascinating journey through Bermuda’s
often-turbulent history, from shipwrecks and whaling to the first flying boats and modern tourism.
THE CLOCKTOWER SHOPPING MALL There’s a world of wonderful shopping and dining in The Dockyard – and all
within walking distance of your cruise ship dock, ferry or bus stop. From
jewellery, fashion and local crafts to rum cakes and glassware, The
Dockyard’s stores are a treasure trove waiting to be discovered. If you’re
hungry, our selection of cafés and restaurants offer everything from fresh
ground coffee and pastries to tasty local dishes like fish chowder and juicy
Wahoo or tuna served straight from the ocean.
The West End offers a virtual treasure trove of stores, both large and small.
The majority of the retail shops are housed in the Clocktower Mall, while
more still are located around the Dockyard.
With its two 100-foot towers, the Clocktower Mall is a Dockyard landmark.
Built in the 19th
century as administration offices for the British Royal Navy, its beautifully restored cobblestone
floors and handsome wrought-iron pillars are now home to an exciting array of boutiques and shops.
Incidentally, don’t be confused by the Clocktower’s “one-handed clock”. While the South Tower is indeed a
regular clock, the North Tower is a tide clock that was set each day to mark high tide–vital information for
sailors based in Dockyard who needed to avoid the treacherous local reefs to ferry supplies and munitions to
ships in the harbour.
Since 1897, A.S. Cooper’s has been meeting the needs of locals
and visitors alike. Our Dockyard store carries a broad range of
affordable fashions, china and crystal gifts and a great selection
of quality Bermuda souvenirs that will remind you and your
friends of your visit with us and the beauty of our island.

Royal Naval Cemetery, Ireland Island
Take a peaceful stroll through this beautiful cemetery. Also
known as ‘The Glade’ – although many of its fine trees were
lost in Hurricane Emily in 1987 - the cemetery contains
memorials to the Royal Navy personnel who died of yellow
fever that ravaged the British military in Bermuda during the
mid-19th century. You can find it on Malabar Road, Ireland
Island on the approach to the Dockyard

Transportation
Getting to Dockyard is easy – and half the fun! Whether
you come by scooter, ferry, bus or taxi, you’ll enjoy
wonderful views of Bermuda along the way.
The Royal Naval Dockyard is a major port of entry into
the Island and if you are arriving via cruise ship all
modes of transportation are available to you right off the ship. The SeaExpress ferry speeds off to various
points of the Island. You can also hop onto a pink and blue bus or into a waiting taxi to take you directly to your
destination, or rent a scooter and begin to explore. Check the local press for timetables.
Bus
Enjoy a leisurely, scenic journey by taking the #7 or
#8 Bermuda Breeze bus from the Central Bus
Terminal on Washington Street, near City Hall in
Hamilton.
The #7 bus travels to Dockyard via the scenic South
Shore, while the #8 goes via Middle Road.
Make sure that the bus reads “Dockyard” and not
“Barnes Corner” on its destination – some #7 and
#8 routes terminate at the junction of South Shore and Middle Roads and don’t go all the way to Dockyard.
Tickets and passes are available from the Bus Terminal or from Visitor Information Centre’s.
Ferry
Hop aboard a high-speed Sea Express catamaran ferry –
they will whisk you from Dockyard to Hamilton or back in
about 20 minutes. Look for the Blue Route at the Ferry
Terminal on Front Street. Ferries operate about once an
hour during the day in the summer months but you are
urged to get the latest timetable when you arrive.
From April to the end of October, there is also a direct ferry
route to and from St. George’s to Dockyard and back again.
Please note that no cash, only tokens or passes are accepted on the ferries and are available from the Ferry
Terminal or from Visitor Information Centre’s.
Taxi
Readily available island wide – just raise your hand and flag one down.
All taxis are metered at government-set rates
Fares are 25 percent higher between midnight and
6:00 a.m., all day on Sunday and on public holidays.
