WELCOME TO A NEW SPRING SEASON AT THE ROYAL COLLEGE OF MUSIC

We have a rich and varied programme of events this spring, with opportunities to experience the depth and variety of the talents of our performers. We are also joined by some exceptional musicians to lead us through exciting repertoire.

Steve Reich joins us for a concert that showcases both his chamber and his orchestral works, before an open masterclass with RCM composers. To complement his visit, our Exploring Minimalism series includes seminal works from both sides of the Atlantic, including pieces by John Adams, Philip Glass and Michael Nyman.

Håkan Hardenberger will lead a masterclass on three modern trumpet concertos. We also welcome John Wilson to celebrate the 100th anniversary of Henri Dutilleux with the gargantuan Symphony no 2 and a late-night performance of the extraordinary Les Citations.

Our ever-popular and successful keyboard festival this year takes us through the colours of Spain, in Hispania. Focused around the music of two anniversary composers, Ginastera and Granados, the programmes also include song and the unusual Tientos for organ. A further festival features the harp in many guises, with Ginastera’s harp concerto, masterclasses and the spectacular RCM Harp Ensemble in Harp Week.

International Women’s Day is marked by a series of events, with masterclasses and concerts, including a world premiere by Judith Bingham. Our students show their creative and collaborative workings in the return of the Great Exhibitionists and our Music and Ideas series continues with talks on opera, music education and the foundation of the Royal Philharmonic Society.

We round off the Spring Season with the two masters of the Baroque, with a performance of J S Bach’s Missa brevis by the RCM Baroque Orchestra and Chamber Choir, and, in conjunction with the London Handel Festival, RCM singers perform Handel’s famous opera Ariodante, with its tale of deceit and intrigue.

RCM alumnus John Wilson, one of the UK’s most in-demand conductors, makes a welcome return to the RCM stage to conduct Dutilleux’s ‘Le double’ symphony.

This captivating work showcases Dutilleux’s skills as a composer who was intensely attuned to the sensual and profound. Also on the bill is Ravel’s famous and evocative Rapsodie espagnole, highlighting the mutual inspiration and the differences between these masterful French composers.

In a special celebration of his distinguished career in his 80th birthday year, Steve will share his considerable knowledge and enthusiasm with RCM composers in a masterclass and join RCM musicians for a concert of some of his most popular works.

This year’s collaboration between the Royal College of Music and the London Handel Festival offers the opportunity to see Handel’s only opera set in the United Kingdom, Ariodante.

The first of Handel’s operas to be performed at the Theatre Royal, Covent Garden, in 1735, it follows the budding romance of Prince Ariodante and Princess Ginevra of Scotland. A happy ending is put in jeopardy, however, when Polinesso decides he wants Ginevra, and the crown, for himself.

Laurence Cummings and James Bonas return to conduct and direct a line-up of outstanding young singers in one of the highlights of the operatic year.

TICKET & BOOKING INFORMATIONEntry to the Royal College of Music is free, however, charges apply for some of our events, performances and exhibitions. All income from ticket sales goes directly to support training and performance opportunities for our students.

Please note, there is a £1.95 booking fee per transaction for online and telephone bookings. This fee covers administration and handling costs, allowing ticket income to support training and performance opportunities for our students.

BOOKING FOR THE SPRING SEASON opens on Wednesday 9 December. RCM Friends and Patrons have priority booking from Wednesday 2 December.

BOOKING FOR RCM JUNIOR DEPARTMENT EVENTS opens on Saturday 30 January.

PLEASE NOTE: Tickets for the London Handel Festival production of Handel’s Ariodante on 8, 9, 12 and 14 March are only available from the London Handel Festival Box Office: 01460 54660. Online booking opens 19 January and telephone bookings open 21 January. See www.london-handel-festival.com for more information.

Group bookings of 10 or more receive a 10% discount where applicable. Maximum group booking size is 33. School parties must be chaperoned at all times by school staff.

Refunds Tickets cannot be exchanged or refunded unless a performance is cancelled; when an event is sold out refunds may be possible, at the discretion of Box Office staff.

Tickets on the door Tickets are available on the door for many RCM events. However, we recommend that tickets are purchased well in advance and cannot guarantee availability on the day.

Late Arrivals To avoid disturbing fellow audience members, latecomers will be asked to wait for a suitable break in the performance before entering the auditorium; occasionally it may not be possible to enter once a performance has started.

VISITING USTransportBy Tube The nearest underground station is South Kensington, which is about 10 minutes’ walk from the RCM. South Kensington is on the District, Circle and Piccadilly lines. Gloucester Road and High Street Kensington stations are both approximately 15 minutes’ walk from the RCM.

By Rail The nearest mainline railway stations are Paddington and Victoria.

By Bus Buses 9, 10, 52 and 452 pass the Royal Albert Hall, whilst 9a runs from Palace Gate and 70 along Queen’s Gate. The number 360 stops very close to the RCM on Prince Consort Road. Many other services run to South Kensington, Kensington High Street or Knightsbridge from surrounding areas.

By Road There is metered parking on Prince Consort Road and the surrounding area. It costs £3 per hour for a maximum of three hours and is free after 6.30pm and on Sundays. There are a limited number of disabled parking spaces and designated motorbike bays in the surrounding area.

Food and DrinkLunch and Snacks The RCM Restaurant offers a great range of hot and cold snacks and beverages each weekday between 9.00am and 4.00pm as well as delicious full lunch options between 12.00pm and 2.00pm.

Evening Performance Drinks and Light Snacks The RCM offers a range of pre-performance and interval refreshments, and a selection of light snacks for those attending evening events in the Amaryllis Fleming Concert Hall and the Britten Theatre. These are served between 6.00pm and 9.00pm (5.00pm for early evening performances) in the Britten Theatre Bar or the RCM Foyer Bar.

Photography and RecordingsPhotographs may be taken during the applause at the end of a work. Photography before and during a performance is forbidden. Private sound or video recordings of RCM concerts and recitals are prohibited without prior written permission from the RCM and the agreement of all performers.Your co-operation is appreciated.

AccessThe Royal College of Music has easy access to most areas and is fully accessible via lifts and ramps. Guide and companion dogs may be taken anywhere on site. The main entrance to the RCM has eight steps up from the pavement and two inside the main doors.

The East Entrance, 20 metres to the left of the main entrance, is solely for the use of patrons with limited mobility and is opened by contacting reception staff via intercom. The main entrance to the Amaryllis Fleming Concert Hall contains 10 steps. A step-free entrance is available.

The main entrance to the Britten Theatre contains 33 steps. An alternative step-free entrance is available for all patrons. There are spaces for wheelchair users and seats for their companions in the Amaryllis Fleming Concert Hall and Britten Theatre.
