WHAT IS ROYAL AMBASSADORS?Royal Ambassadors® (RA®) is the WMU® missions organization for boys in grades 1–6. Being in RA helps boys:• learn a biblical worldview with an emphasis on missions learning

and missional living• develop leadership skills to serve God and to share His love with others• grow spiritually in their understanding of God and His mission, including

how they are a part of God’s plan.

HOW DO BOYS LEARN IN RA?Each month, RAs focus on the work of a missionary in North America or an international country. Children learn through age-appropriate Bible studies and hands-on activities. Many activities in RA help boys learn about the cultural aspects of a missionary’s work. Boys learn by hearing mission stories and using Bible verses related to missions. RAs are given the opportunity to pray for missions, give to missions, and do missions.

WHO LEADS ROYAL AMBASSADORS?RA is designed to be led by godly men who will use this opportunity to educate boys about missions and mentor them in their day-to-day lives.

WHAT WILL THE BOYS STUDY?As RAs, boys will study a specific set of virtues throughout the year. These virtues include:• loyalty• friendship• courage• responsibility

• honesty• faith• compassion

• perseverance• teamwork• self-discipline

WHEN DO RAs MEET?RA groups typically meet for one hour each week. Groups can meet at your church, in homes, or in any appropriate location. Most RA groups meet at the same time as Girls in Action® (GA®) groups. For more information about beginning Girls in Action in your church, visit wmu.com/children and wmu.com/getstarted.

WHAT IF I HAVE QUESTIONS OR WOULD LIKE TRAINING?RA has an extensive network of consultants across North America. These consultants can talk with you one-on-one about starting or strengthening RA, and help you train church leaders. Many states and associations offer associational, regional, or statewide training for leaders, and missions events for boys.

To contact the RA consultant in your state or to learn more about training opportunities, visit wmu.com/statecontacts.

■OPENING (10 MINUTES)Complete this activity with children as they arrive.

Meet Your RAs■SUPPLIES■ note cards■ pens■ tape■ sugar-free candy (optional)

Prior to the session, write out each one of the following questions or commands onto a note card:

Favorite RA leader?Favorite game played in RA?Favorite missionary story heard at RA? Favorite RA campcraft?Recite the RA Pledge. Recite the RA Motto. What are the parts of the RA emblem? Who is one of your RA friends? What is a missions project you did in RA?

1. Tape a card onto the forehead of every RA as they arrive. Tell boys that they are not allowed to say the questions out loud; they are only allowed to answer. Direct them to mingle and collect answers so that they can figure out each of their questions. They will need to make their best guesses to you. When they are correct, you may want to award them a piece of sugar-free candy.

2. Take attendance. Recognize any RA with a birthday this week. Say together the RA motto and RA pledge (p.1).

■ STORY (15–20 MINUTES)If you teach mixed ages, divide into younger and older groups for these activities. Or select the option that best fits your group.

LADS (GRADES 1–3)

Saul’s Faith■SUPPLIES■ glow sticks■ Bible

1. Define this month’s RA Virtue—Faith (p. 14). Explain why Saul considered himself the worst sinner of all time (allowing Jewish leaders to murder Christians for their faith in Jesus, hunting down those that put their faith in Jesus, and even sentencing them to death for their faith in Jesus).

Point out that he was living out the extreme opposite of faith in his actions.

2. Distribute glow sticks to RAs. Darken your meeting space. Instruct boys to wave their glow sticks around. Have them follow along reading Acts 9:1–19 by the light of their glow stick.

3. Invite RAs to talk about the immediate changes in Saul’s life after his encounter with the Lord on the road.

Evidence of Saul’s Faith■SUPPLIES■ RA World■ pencils

1. Direct boys to “Saul’s Faith” (p. 8 in RA World). Have RAs complete the activity together. If needed, look up the accompanying Scriptures to find the answers.

2. Talk about how Saul’s life was changed because of his faith in Jesus. Point out that Saul’s transformation was so drastic, his name changed (Acts 13:9). He served as a missionary who traveled to many places to share the gospel (Acts 13:2–3). He faced all kinds of challenges and hardships as he carried out the work that God was calling him to do (2 Corinthians 11:23–33). And he wrote many letters to churches and church leaders recorded in the New Testament (Romans through Philemon).

CRUSADERS (GRADES 4–6)

Saul Encounters the Lord ■SUPPLIES■ Bible

1. Provide the backstory about Saul from Acts 7:54–60 and 8:1–3. Explain that Saul considered himself the worst sinner of all time (1 Timothy 1:15–16). Say: But all that changed in Saul’s life.

2. Have volunteer read Acts 9:1–9. 3. Discuss how those early Christians might

have felt about Saul given his reputation. Say: Imagine that you were a believer in Damascus. You heard a story about Saul smiling while he watched a Christian being stoned to death. You had a Christian friend that was imprisoned for his faith because of Saul. You heard that Saul was seen just outside of town and was expected to arrive in Damascus at any minute. You were forced to write down the names of everyone that

Life on Mission: PhilippinesOVERVIEWRAs will understand how Saul put his faith in the Lord and became a missionary.

BIBLE VERSE “But the Lord said to Ananias, ‘Go! I have chosen this man to work for me. He will announce my name to the Gentiles and to their kings. He will also announce my name to the people of Israel. I will show him how much he must suffer for me’” (Acts 9:15–16).

believed in Jesus—your friends and family and give them over to the religious leaders who were giving those lists to Saul when he arrived. Allow them to talk about how they might react in those situations.

Evidence of Ananias’s Faith ■SUPPLIES■ Bible■ RA World■ pencils

1. Introduce Ananias by reading Acts 9:10–19. Point out that Ananias demonstrated his faith by obeying the Lord even though he would have to face a notorious persecutor of Christians.

2. Direct them to “Ananias’s Faith” (p. 8 in RA World). Have RAs complete the activity and review their findings together. Discuss why it would have been hard for many believers to accept Saul into their Christian communities.

Ask RAs to imagine that Paul was coming to your meeting time tonight. What questions woud your

RAs ask him? What would they want to know? Challenge children to create responses for Paul.

■ MISSIONS ACTIVITIES (15–20 MINUTES)Complete one or both activities as a group.

Mission: Saul’s Life■SUPPLIES■ RA World■ colored pencils■ various coats

1. Recall the transformation in Saul’s life recorded in Acts 9:1–19. Direct RAs to “Transformation Drawings” (p. 9 in RA World). Invite them to design a series of before and after cartoon strips of Saul. You may want to suggest that they examine some of the scenes from Saul’s life. “Before” scenes include: Saul holding coats of those that stoned Stephen, Saul putting believers into prison, Saul collecting names of believers, and Saul condemning believers to death. “After” scenes include: Saul preaching about the Lord Jesus, serving as a missionary to Jews and Gentiles, writing many New Testament letters to churches and

individuals, and suffering for the sake of Christ Jesus being made known in the world.

2. Have RAs participate in a coat relay challenge. One boy will carry a large pile of coats while he runs along a designated path. If he drops a coat, he must restart. Continue until all boys attempt the challenge. If you have a larger group, divide into teams and provide them with additional coats.

Saul’s Mission: My Life■SUPPLIES■ Bible■ RA World■ markers, assorted colors

1. Say: Today’s story includes two different names for believers in Jesus. They were designated “men and women who belonged to the Way of Jesus” (9:2) and “all those who worship you” (Acts 9:14). This is how the early believers were known before they were called Christians. Ask: How do these two names for believers explain what it means to be a Christian?

2. Have a volunteer read Acts 9:15–16. Discuss Saul’s mission, which was to announce the name of Jesus Christ to everyone.

3. Lead RAs to find different names in Acts 9:1–22 for Jesus and for Christians. Have them write these names on “Graffiti Globe” (p. 10 in RA World).

4. Direct them to look at their finished globe. Talk about how Saul’s mission is true for every believer. Say: We are all called to announce Jesus throughout the world. RA is all about missions—and being an ambassador for Christ.

JUST FOR LADS■SUPPLIES■ RA World■foam sticker letters

1. Have boys match the foam sticker letters for at least one of the words in the margin of “Graffiti Globe” (p. 10 in RA World). Direct them to adhere that to the world map.

2. In the remaining space on the world map, they can illustrate or doodle designs. They might also want to write RA on their map in the location where they live. Help boys find the Philippines on the map since this is the missionary focus this month. Direct them to put some special graffiti around the islands.

■ CLOSING (5–10 MINUTES)Guide your group to participate in these activities together. Use the final activity as parents arrive.

Duct Tape Scales■SUPPLIES■ Poster 1 from the RA Leader Kit ■ duct tape, assorted colors/patterns■ scissors■ craft-cutting mat (optional)

1. Direct RAs to “Something like Scales” (Poster 1 from the RA Leader Kit). Have them follow the instructions to create their own version of the scales.

2. Challenge them to recite the memory verse with the scales covering their eyes.

Scaly Eyes Prayer■SUPPLIES■ copies of “Family Missions Focus” (p. 28,

one per RA)■ scales from “Duct Tape Scales” activity

1. Talk about how missionary families continue Saul’s mission around the world. They are announcing Jesus’ name to others. MKs play an important role in their ministries.

2. Read one of the “September MK Profiles” (p. 20 in RA World).

3. Have RAs put the scales over their eyes as you lead them in prayer. Pray for the MK and their family to announce Jesus’ name in the place where they serve and to bring more people into the Way of Jesus all around the world.

4. Print out copies of “Family Missions Focus” (p. 28). Send home with boys.

LEADER TIPHave children create a Memory Verse poster. They can decorate it with their duct tape scales.

■OPENING (5–10 MINUTES)Complete this activity with children as they arrive.

Tribal Church Traditions■SUPPLIES■ Poster 5 from the RA Leader Kit

1. Display Poster 5 in your meeting place. Introduce the Hagen family who serve as missionaries in the Philippines. They work with an unreached people group (UPG) and a tribal church network.

2. Say: The Hagens work with Filipino believers in what they call tribal churches. There are some special tribal church traditions. Explain that it is a tribal church tradition to call up different groups of people and sing special songs or perform spontaneous songs in front of the church.

3. Lead RAs to participate in this tradition. Call up the following groups of people in your RA chapter and have them perform the spontaneous task in front of the rest of your RAs:

— All boys taller than 50 inches: Recite the RA Pledge.

— All boys wearing colorful socks: Recite the RA Motto.

— All boys whose name starts with the letters A through N: Recite the RA definition of the faith virtue.

— All boys with a little brother or sister: Recite this month’s Bible verse.

— All boys that have not been called up yet: Yell out “Welcome to the Philippines!”

Mission: Steve’s Life■SUPPLIES■ dry-erase board and markers

1. Invite boys to talk about some ways people can learn about Jesus: reading the Bible, talking to a missionary, attending a church, through a family member or friend, etc. Make a list on a dry-erase board.

2. Share this story:

Steve Hagen started thinking at a young age about people who had never heard o f Jesus. When he was a boy, his older sister developed leukemia. She spent a lot of time in the hospital. Steve was very concerned about what would happen to her if she died. Their dad would always read them Bible stories at night. After one of those readings, Steve became a believer in Jesus. When his sister died, it was heartbreaking for him. Years passed, but Steve always thought about what would have happened if she had never heard of Jesus during those Bible readings with their dad. Steve learned that there were people all around the world with no way to hear about Jesus. It stuck in his mind, and he knew that he wanted to be involved in sharing the gospel with them.

3. Explain that the Hagen family serves in a place where there are 30 unreached people groups (UPG), which means that more than 5 million people on different islands throughout the Philippines have never heard about Jesus.

UPG in the Philippines■SUPPLIES■ Bible

1. Choose one RA to represent the UPG. Have the UPG sit in the center of your meeting space. Now direct the other boys to represent the cults found in the Philippians. Cults in the Philippines often claim to teach the truth of the Bible and tell others to believe in Jesus plus something or someone else. They are teaching lies about Jesus and God’s Word. Have the boys representing the cults surround the UPG and whisper: Lies. Lies. Lies.

2. Choose one RA to represent the missionaries. Have them go and sit in the center with the UPG. Have them mime reading and studying the Bible together. Have the UPG stand up and shout, I know the truth! I know the real Jesus! Signal for the cults to stop whispering.

3. Debrief boys about this demonstration. Talk about the importance of the work that the missionaries are doing to take the truth to the UPG.

Life on Mission: PhilippinesOVERVIEWRAs will discover how missionaries live out their faith on mission in the Philippines.

BIBLE VERSE “But the Lord said to Ananias, ‘Go! I have chosen this man to work for me. He will announce my name to the Gentiles and to their kings. He will also announce my name to the people of Israel. I will show him how much he must suffer for me’” (Acts 9:15-16).

WEEK TWO

20 | wmu.com/RA

CRUSADERS (GRADES 4–6)

Typhoon Tracker ■SUPPLIES■ Internet■ RA World

1. Direct boys to locate the Philippines on a world map (p. 10 in RA World).

2. Explain that typhoons have a direct effect on the missionary’s work in the Philippines. Describe the following scenarios.

— A typhoon destroyed the meeting place of the tribal church. The church was small, so an open-air porch with a hut roof was added onto the building. When the typhoon caused damage, the church used a tarp to create a temporary shelter so they could continue meeting. During the storm, 24 people took refuge in a pit for six hours as the storm passed through. Everyone survived, but their crops were badly damaged.

— The Hagens were traveling by car when another typhoon hit the Philippines. They took shelter in a hotel room that wasn’t exactly watertight. Water seeped into their room under the door and they did their best to keep dry. They were thankful for walls and a roof.

— After the typhoon, the Hagens hiked up the mountains to find that a bridge to their destination was destroyed by the storms. They took a five-mile detour on a different bridge that actually collapsed from the heavy rerouted traffic. Further up the route, the road had collapsed into a river, although the bridge was still intact. They carried supplies and food using a pulley system, since it was easier than hiking through the rapids of the river below them. Then they set up a home in a new village so they could mobilize tribal chuches to send missionaries to an UPG.

3. Have Crusaders look up some typhoon weather reports at Typhoon2000.ph or WUnderground.com/hurricane. Pray about any current weather predications and the safety of the missionaries and the tribal churches.

Funny Stories from the Missions Field ■SUPPLIES■ RA World

1. Have boys share a recent funny story about something that happened to them.

2. Point out that funny stuff happens on the missions field all the time. It is best to just laugh in those moments no matter how awkward or difficult they might be.

3. Direct them to read “I’ve Got a Funny Story…” (p. 11 in RA World). Have them complete the laugh-o-meter graphic for each story listed.

Challenge RAs to think about the weather in your community. Are there people affected by the

weather? How can your group minister to those affected by weather in your community?

■ MISSIONS ACTIVITIES (15–20 MINUTES)Complete one or both activities as a group.

Tribal Church Sends Missionaries■SUPPLIES■ RA World■ coffee beans

1. Explain that the Hagens’ work with a tribal church network of sending churches. A sending church sends out missionaries to other villages and communities and language groups.

2. Direct RAs to “Road Trip” (p. 12 in RA World). Distribute a coffee bean to each boy. Have them complete the first activity.

3. Ask them to share what they find most interesting about the Hagens’ work with the tribal church.

that, the leader can read the statement at that numbered stop. Continue racing and counting until all stops have been read.

2. When boys do the other “Road Trip” activity, direct them to draw a picture in the space of things they like to do when they are on a road trip.

Bible Study and Baptism■SUPPLIES■ RA World

1. Divide boys into teams of two. Direct them to read “Faith in the Real Jesus” (p. 13 in RA World). Have them stop their reading when they get to the break, Then Something Happened…

2. Share this part of the story: Steve was leading a Bible study in Jose’s community. Jose’s parents, siblings, and families were participating in the weekly Bible study. That is why Steve knew Jose. Whenever Jose would see Steve coming for the Bible study, Jose would leave. The Bible study started shrinking. People were no longer coming, and the two people who were attending were not participating in the discussion. Steve started to wonder if maybe the Lord wanted him to leave them and start a new project. But he never felt a peace about that decision. So Steve continued. Then one day, a flood came. It destroyed the crops. There was no food available and no way for anyone to earn wages because of the damage. Jose’s home was destroyed, so he moved his family into his parent’s house. Steve brought some food packages to help those in the community.

3. Direct them to finish reading the dialogue in “Faith in the Real Jesus.”

4. Discuss how Jose’s faith in God made a big difference in his life. Lead them to think about the before and after.

■ CLOSING (10 MINUTES)Guide your group to participate in these activities together. Use the final activity as parents arrive.

Adventure Hiker Game■SUPPLIES■ Poster 2 from the RA Leader Kit■ pillow■ sleeping bag (traditional or hooded-style)■ paper, cut into stone shapes

Prior to the meeting, cut apart Poster 2. Position these around your meeting space. Put the appropriate supplies at each station.

1. Direct RAs to go to the different stations to read and complete the challenge.

2. When everyone is finished, talk about the adventures of the Hagen family. Ask: Which adventure would you find most challenging on the missions field in the Philippines?

3. Read one of the “September MK Profiles” (p. 20 in RA World). Talk about the adventures of the MK that you read about.

God at Work■SUPPLIES■ paper■ pens or pencils

1. Direct RAs to think about a time in their lives when something did not go according to their plans or expectations. Help them see that when we look back at those circumstances we see that God was at work in spite of that. You may want to share a personal story that fits this description.

2. Have boys draw a picture or write about that time in their life.

3. Share this message from Steve Hagen: The best part of my work is looking back and seeing how God is at work. I often feel like I stumble around trying to know what to do. The plans I have, often do not happen. The things I think will work, often make no difference. But when I look back, I can see how God has been at work. It is amazing. It is a privilege to serve as a missionary—to do what I do and to see God at work in spite of me.

4. Have three volunteers lead the group to pray for the Hagens, the tribal churches, and the Agta [EYE-tah] people.

JUST FOR CRUSADERS1. Direct Crusaders to focus on ways God is

at work in their lives or the world around them.

2. Challenge them to keep an ongoing journal of their observations about how they see God working.

WEEK TWO

22 | wmu.com/RA

■OPENING (5–10 MINUTES)Complete this activity with children as they arrive.

Mission: The Fenners’ Life■SUPPLIES■ Posters 3 and 6 from the RA Leader Kit

Prior to the session, cut apart the sets on Poster 3. If you need more patterns than the ones provided, make copies or use the suggestion in the “Just for Lads” activity below.

1. Give a piece to every RA. Direct them to find their partner with the matching piece.

2. Show Poster 6 and introduce the work done by the Fenner family: Amos, Sharon, Lucy, Jeff, and Jarod. Say: Amos and Sharon Fenner serve in the Philippines. They were praying about where God wanted them to serve. They had two requirements—unreached people and warm climate. They feel the Philippines is the perfect spot!

3. Have each RA tell his partner what his two requirements would be if he were looking for a place to go as a missionary. Then have partners introduce each other.

4. Take attendance. Recognize any RA with a birthday this week. Say together the RA motto and RA pledge (p.1).

JUST FOR LADS■SUPPLIES■ printout of the RA Logo,

(available at wmu.com/?q =article/clip-art#children)

Prior to the session, print out several copies of the RA logo and other clipart items. Cut each printout into two pieces, being careful to cut each one in a unique way. For example, a wavy cut, a zig-zag cut, a puzzle lock cut, a diagonal-line cut, etc. Have Lads put together the puzzle pieces with a partner.

■ STORY (15–20 MINUTES)Complete one or both activities as a group.

LADS(GRADES 1–3)

Without Peace■SUPPLIES■ RA World■ pencils

1. Ask: Can you think of a time when you were in a dangerous situation? How did it make you feel? Allow RAs to respond.

2. Explain that some areas of the Philippines are very dangerous because of violence. The Tausug people live in one of those danger zones. The Fenners are responsible for sharing Christ with them. But due to the dangers involved, the Fenners are not allowed to travel there or live among them.

3. Direct them to “Praying for Peace” (p. 14 in RA World). Allow them to complete the decoding. Then have volunteers read the story aloud.

Danger Zone in the Philippines■SUPPLIES■ paper■ pens or pencils

1. The Fenners are already doing some exciting things to share the gospel with the Tausug. Share this story: A high school math teacher to the Tausug was able to share his faith with his students. Now the teacher and his wife lead a Bible study with the students who believe in Jesus.

2. Discuss how missionaries can train people to take the gospel into places they themselves are not allowed to go.

3. The Fenners have already participated in some education projects for children living as refugees in other countries. When they escape the dangers of their homeland, they give up their citizenship as Filipinos. But their new country does not recognize them as citizens. So they deport them when they are caught. These refugee Filipinos are not able to work and live in safety. The children cannot attend the local schools, so these education projects allowed them to teach the Filipino refugee children.

4. Challenge children to come up with a basic list of skills they think should be taught to a Filipino refugee child that would be in their same grade.

CRUSADERS (GRADES 4–6)

Dangerous Mission■SUPPLIES■ map of Philippines■ dry-erase board and markers

1. Direct RAs to the map of the Philippines. Point out that there are 7,107 islands in the Philippines.

Life on Mission: PhilippinesOVERVIEWRAs will learn how missionaries share their faith in the Philippines.

WEEK THREE

RA Leader | 23

2. Explain that the Tausug live in the southern part of the country, where there are many violent groups trying to stop Christians from sharing the gospel. It is too dangerous for the Fenner family to live in the same area as the people they serve. It is too dangerous for them to even travel there.

3. Have RAs brainstorm some possible ways that missionaries can work to make sure the Tausug hear about Jesus. Make a list on the dry-erase board.

4. Share some of the ways the Fenners are able to share the gospel with the Tausug: — By training Filipino missionaries to take

the gospel to the Tausug— By encouraging Tausug believers who are

teachers to share with their students and start Bible studies

— By working with churches to send out missions teams that can share the gospel and pray

— By working with refugees in other Southeast Asian countries

Challenge your RAs to consider the needs of refugees coming to your city or state. What can your group do

to help them learn about God?

Tausag Tag■SUPPLIES■ masking tape

1. Play tag to demonstrate the dangers of trying to take the gospel to the Tausug in the Philippines. The goal is for the Tausug to all become believers. Set up an island with tape on the floor. It should be more than a 6-foot circle. Explain that this is the area where the Tausug live. Choose most of the boys to represent the Tausug on that island. Designate a wall in your meeting space to represent another Southeast Asian country. Between that wall and the island, designate at least one boy to represent the immigration agent that can deport anyone they catch and put them back on the island. If any Tausug wants to escape as a refugee, they must touch the wall before getting tagged. If they take their hand off the wall they can be tagged at any time. Choose one boy to represent the missionary that is called to go to the Tausug; this boy can never step inside the circle. The deportation agents cannot touch him. The missionary can stand at

the border and interact with the Tausug. The missionary can also go to the refugees and interact with the Tausug. For the missionary to share Jesus with someone he must hold hands and whisper Mission and the Tausug can whisper back My Life. When that happens, the Tausug is a believer and can now hold hands and whisper Mission to other Tausug. Choose one or two boys to represent the violent groups that live in the area with the Tausug. They patrol the area to make sure the missionary doesn’t enter and anyone that contacts the missionary is held prisoner. If they capture someone that is a believer then that believer can no longer whisper.

2. Point out the difficulty of playing this game is real-life for the Tausug and missionaries like the Fenner family.

■ MISSIONS ACTIVITIES (15–20 MINUTES)Complete one or both activities as a group.

At Home in the Philippines■SUPPLIES■ RA World■ pencils

1. Ask: What do you consider your home? Allow boys to give their answers.

2. Share that the Fenner children: Jarod (11), Jeff (9), and Lucy (3) have grown up on the missions field. They were all born in another Southeast Asian country, which they consider their first home. When a restaurant waiter asked Jeff where his family was from, he responded by talking about the Fenners’ first home. It confused the server because Jeff doesn’t look like the people group in that country. The MKs understand that “home” means a lot of different things and it can be in more than one place.

3. Direct boys to “What Do You Have in Common with MKs?” (p. 15 in RA World). Have them complete the activity and share their findings.

4. Share the following prayer requests from the Fenner family:— Pray God will raise up a team of Filipino

missionaries who will take the gospel to the Tausug.

— Pray that local churches will pray for the Tausug and will send out believers from among them as missionaries.

LEADER TIPIf you are playing Tausag Tag, you might want to make some signs or nametags to help distinguish the different roles.

— Pray missionaries can get a New Testament Bible printed in the Tausug language.

— Pray the Fenners will encourage a network of churches and ministries to serve the needs of the Tausug.

— Pray for more opportunities for the Fenners to meet and share the gospel with the Tausug.

Step Out in Faith■SUPPLIES■ Poster 4 from the RA Leader Kit■ sticker dots■ pencils■ bookmarks■ stretchy, sticky hand toys

1. Talk about the RA virtue for this month: Faith. Point out that it is important to live out one’s faith. If you believe God, trust His Word, and know Jesus, you will want to make Jesus known throughout the world by all means possible.

2. Explain missionaries serving in the Philippines live out their faith though they face dangerous circumstances. They also encourage and support the Filipino believers to live out their faith among the Tausug people groups.

3. Direct boys to the four stories on “Faithful Filipino Believers” (Poster 4 from the RA Leader Kit). Have volunteers read each story. Before they read the story, distribute the following items for them to hold while they listen to the stories. These items can also help them remember each story. You could even quiz them after reading about the story that went with each item. • sticker dots on their foreheads

(Tausug Leper Colony)• pencils

(Tausug High School)• bookmarks

(Tausug Education Projects)• stretchy, sticky hand toys

(Tausug Refugees)4. The Fenners have a challenge for you:

Step out in faith. Attempt things that will only be possible with God’s help. Ask boys to explain what that might mean for them.

■ CLOSING (10 MINUTES)Guide your group to participate in these activities together. Use the final activity as parents arrive.

Gift of Faith■SUPPLIES■ RA World

1. Direct boys to “Faith Fruity Mix-up” (p. 16 in RA World). Have them read and complete the activity.

2. Discuss how this month’s RA virtue is important on the mission field.

3. Read a “September MK Profile” (p. 20 in RA World).

4. Direct RAs to pray about the Fenner family and the featured MK. Pray that these families will be strong in the faith and that God will guide them through the challenges they will face today.

It’s More Fun in the Philippines!■SUPPLIES■ oranges, cut into wedges

1. Share that the Fenners have a saying: It’s more fun in the Philippines! They say there are moments when it is uncomfortably hot and the electricity is off, but a Filipino will always find something to smile about.

2. Challenge RAs to recite the September Bible Verse while keeping a big smile on their face.

3. To make this more challenging, give each boy an orange wedge to hold in his mouth to help keep him smiling, and then have him recite the verse.

WEEK THREE

Does your church have Wi-Fi?

Do you feel like you are missing out on an activity or part of the lesson if you don’t? Have you considered downloading videos or activities at home, in the church office, at a local coffee shop prior to the meeting? Then during your meeting, use the downloads offline. A second option would be to ask a Challenger® who has a data plan to help with the activity.

RA Leader | 25

■OPENING 10 MINUTES)Complete this activity with children as they arrive.

RA Racers■SUPPLIES■ RA Racer kits (optional)■ paper■ colored pencils

1. Use the RA Racer kits to help boys begin their own car designs. If you do not have kits already purchased, then distribute some paper and pencils. Have boys begin sketching out their designs and ideas for their derby cars. For specifics on design and races, check out wmu.com/RA and RoyalRacers.com.

2. Plan a future racing event with the boys and their families. Note: If you are doing the Campout Worship activity in Special Projects, you may want to find a way to incorporate a racing challenge into that event.

3. Say together the RA Pledge and RA Motto (p.1). Take attendance. Recognize any RA with a birthday this week.

■SPECIAL PROJECTS (25–40 MINUTES)Select one project to complete as a group.

Coffee Plantation■SUPPLIES■ RA World■ coffee beans■ old CDs■ card stock, assorted colors■ all-purpose glue■ pens■ yarn■ light-weight, perforated ball■ double-sided tape■ coffee filters■ mixing bowls■ paintbrushes■ watercolor paper■ instant coffee

1. Say: One way Filipino tribal churches support their own missionaries that are taking the gospel to unreached people groups, like the Agta, is coffee. The church has ministry partners that are helping develop a coffee plantation. The income from the coffee will provide resources to financially support their own missionaries. There is a plenty of land available in this

particular tribal church, so they grow plenty of food and crops in their community. The coffee plantation allows them to earn a reliable income that will provide for the needs of the Filipino missionaries serving among the Agta.

2. Explain that this project will help them raise money for the Lottie Moon Christmas Offering®. Boys will create some coffee bean art items that church members, family, and friends can have if they make a donation to the offering. They will host a gallery of their artwork, talk about missions in the Philippines, and serve coffee to those that attend.

3. Direct them to “Coffee Bean Art” (p. 18 in RA World). Encourage them to use some of these techniques or come up with their own ideas for making art masterpieces. Allow time for them to work on their projects.

RA Trek■SUPPLIES■ RA Trek Leader Guide■ RA Trek log books■ supplies for selected RA Trek activities

1. RA Treksm is the achievement plan for Royal Ambassadors®. Obtain a copy of RA Trek Leader Guide and the appropriate grade-level RA Trek log books.

2. Focus on the “My RA Identity” growth area. Using RA Trek Leader Guide, select a project from this growth area for each Trek represented by your RAs.

3. Gather the supplies boys will need.4. Invite RAs to share reasons they enjoy

being an RA.5. Say: Today we will learn more about being

an RA.6. Have each boy complete his project.7. Guide boys to complete the “My RA

Identity” section of their grade-level RA Trek log books.

Campout Worship ■SUPPLIES■ RA World■ pencils

1. Say: Camping is part of the fun for missionaries and churches in the Philippines. Long hikes and camping are required to take the gospel to people who have never heard. There is no other way to travel to these rural areas. Camping and hiking is also an important bonding activity in the tribal church leadership.

Life on Mission: PhilippinesOVERVIEWRAs will consider how they can live their life on mission.

WEEK FOUR

26 | wmu.com/RA

2. Direct boys to “Leaving Footprints” (p. 17 in RA World). Have them complete the activities.

3. Inspire boys to plan their own campout. Allow boys to make their own plans and use their creative ideas. Focus on the Mission: My Life theme for the year. Plan some worshipful activities. Here are a few suggestions:

— Go on a hike together. — Make a mold impression of their foot.

Pray about how they are living on mission.

— Do some faith-building activities on a ropes course.

— Use the RA Campcraft Outdoor Skills Manual as a guide to your planning. See wmu.com/RA.

■ CLOSING (10–20 MINUTES)Guide your group to participate in these activities together. Use the final activity as parents arrive.

Target Toss■SUPPLIES■ coffee beans (one per RA)■ small stones or rocks (one per RA)■ RA World■ markers

1. Explain that target games are popular among children in the Philippines. They find whatever objects are available and make games out of them. The game RAs will learn tonight uses nothing but a coffee bean, a rock, and a “hole” on the gameboard.

2. Direct boys to “Calahoyo Game” (p. 19 in RA World). Help them understand how to play this game.

3. After they play one round, challenge the winners to recite the memory verse when they get their anak into the hole.

Banana Leaf Prayer Display■SUPPLIES■ image of a banana leaf■ green construction paper■ scissors■ markers

1. Banana leaves are important in Filipino culture. Share an image of a banana leaf (below). Point out that banana leaves can be used as plates and cooking vessels.

2. Say: Today we will use them to make prayer reminders. Distribute the supplies for boys to cut out a banana leaf and write a prayer reminder on them. Here are the prayer requests from the missionaries featured this month:

• Pray for Filipino missionaries that are taking the gospel to the Tausug.

• Pray for Filipino tribal churches to send out missionaries from among them to the Tausug.

• Pray for a New Testament Bible to become available in the language of the Tausug.

• Pray for the prayer networks of the Fenner family.

• Pray for more opportunities for the Fenners to share the gospel with the Tausug.

WEEK FOUR

✱ Additional Memory Verses for September

“May the God who gives hope fill you with great joy. May you have perfect peace as you trust in him. May the power of the Holy Spirit fill you with hope” (Romans 15:13).

“But when you ask, you must believe. You must not doubt. That’s because a person who doubts is like a wave of the sea. The wind blows and tosses them around” (James 1:6).

“Jesus said to her, ‘I am the resurrection and the life. Anyone who believes in me will live, even if they die. And whoever lives by believing in me will never die. Do you believe this?’” (John 11:25–26).

28 | wmu.com/RA

RAs will explore what it means to live on mission. They will learn how Saul’s life was changed when he encountered the Lord, so much that he lived the rest of his life on mission. They will discover how missionaries serve in the Philippines in spite of many challenges in taking the gospel to unreached people groups and training Filipino believers in tribal church to live on mission. RAs will do a project that will help them understand how missionaries serve in the Philippines.

BIBLE FOCUSRead Acts 9:1–19. After Saul was blinded on the road to Damascus, he went from being a persecutor to preaching about Jesus to everyone. Reflect on the changes that knowing the Lord has made in your life. Think creatively about what your life would look like if you never knew the Lord. Discuss how you might have made different choices.

MINISTRY FOCUS

RAs will learn about missionaries serving in the Philippines. Steve and Jen Hagen mobilize Filipino tribal churches to send missionaries to unreached tribal groups. Amos and Sharon Fenner* develop strategies to reach the Tausug in the Southern Philippines with the gospel.

MISSIONS FOCUS➤ Doing Church Together The Hagen family are missionaries in the Philippines. They say, We reach out to families, by reaching out to the parents. The change we have seen come over children when their parents come to the Lord is remarkable. Most of the time, children join the parents for house church when they are old enough to understand. Church is a family event. Participate in your church as a family. Sometimes in our American churches, the children and adults go their separate ways. Do church together as a family. Sit all together during a worship service. Go to the same class. Do a ministry event together as a family. Or you may want to invite some extended family to participate in church with you. Invite some family members that do not usually attend church with you.

➤ Karaoke TimeFilipinos love music! They enjoy playing music loud and singing songs. Karaoke is a favorite activity. It is common for families to rent a karaoke machine for a party. They invite over friends and might sing for the entire 24 hours of their rental agreement. Throw a karaoke party with some friends. Set up a stage in your backyard. Invite people into your home for snacks and singing. If you don’t have a karaoke machine, then rent or borrow one. Enjoy the fun and fellowship with others.

➤ Look Around One of the Filipino Christian moms in the tribal church saw a need in the community. God was calling her to teach children the Bible. She started a Saturday morning Bible storytime. She invited the children in her village. On the first day, 100 children showed up to participate in the activities. So many children showed up to hear the stories of Jesus that they had to divide them into two different classes so that everyone who wanted to come could come. What needs do you see in your community? Ask God to show your family what you can do to tell others about Jesus. Maybe there are children in your community that don’t know the stories of Jesus. Give them a storybook Bible or invite children in your neighborhood over for storytime, activities, and snacks.

Use this resource to reinforce what your child is learning every month in Royal Ambassadors®.
