Welcome to a Route that invites you on an in-spiring journey throughplaceswithHistory, nearsingular monastic ensembles, churches, cha-pels, memorials, bridges, castles and statelytowers. The Monastery of Paço de Sousa is amilestone of Romanesque architecture closelyconnected with one of the most powerful fa-milies in Portuguese History, in the Middle Age.The Monastery of Travanca standing out for thepresence of the highest medieval tower of Por-tugal. TheMonasteriesofPombeiroandFerreiraand the Castle of Arnoia are further highlightsalong this Route, internationally connected as apart of TRANSROMANICA since 2009.

Cultural Route of the Council of EuropeTRANSROMANICA connects the common Romanesque heritage of eightEuropean countries: Germany, Austria, Portugal, Spain, France, Italy,Serbia and Romania. Along the route, you can find historic buildings of thisera. Romanesque style emerged in the late 10th century as a new form ofarchitecture. Magnificent cathedrals, monasteries and peaceful churchesand castles held witnesses to this major European era. The first Europeformed in theMiddleAges is theorigin of our present EuropeanCommunity.Romanesque is unity indiversity; it is alsoanenchantedworld full of allegoryand regulation, power and imagination, deformationandorder representingthe Medieval period. Romanesque is the Middle Ages. Romanesque isTRANSROMANICA!

In August 2007, TRANSROMANICA wasofficially recognized as a "Major CulturalRoute of the Council of Europe". As such itprovidesaconcretedemonstrationof the fun-damental principles of the Council of Europe:human rights, cultural democracy, culturaldiversity and identity, dialogue, mutual ex-change and enrichment across boundariesand centuries.The Cultural Routes programme was laun-ched by the Council of Europe in 1987. Itsobjective is todemonstrate inavisibleway,bymeans of a journey through space and time,how theheritageof thedifferent countriesandcultures of Europe represents a shared cul-tural heritage.
