Apologies: PearseMoore p.moore@nerve‐centre.org.ukSessionOne:Introduction:SettingtheContextforPartnershipPeterJenkinsonandNoelleGoldman‐JacobThecontextfortheTatepartnershipisrootedinthehistoryofTatefromitsinitialsiteatTateMillbank,inLondon,whichopenedin1897onthesiteoftheformerMillbankPenitentiarytoitsmostrecentexpansionandredevelopmentofthesiteatBankside,TateModern.Tate’sofficialnamewastheNationalGalleryofBritishArt,butitbecamepopularlyknownastheTateGalleryafteritsfounderSirHenryTate.Thisnamewasnotofficiallyadopted,however,until1932.Thegallerywasdesignedtohousethecollectionofnineteenth‐centuryBritishpaintingandsculpturegiventothenationbySirHenryTate,togetherwithsomeBritishpaintingstransferredfromtheNationalGalleryinTrafalgarSquare.AtthattimeitsresponsibilitieswerespecificallyformodernBritishart,definedthenasworksbyartistsbornafter1790.In1917thegallerywasalsomaderesponsibleforthenationalcollectionofinternationalmodernartandforBritishartgoingbacktoabout1500.TatebecamewhollyindependentfromtheNationalGalleryin1955andin1992wasaccordedcorporatestatusbytheMuseumsandGalleriesAct1992,whichinvestedallproperty,rightsandliabilitiesintheBoard.In2000,whatwastheTateGallerybecameTate,afamilyoffourgalleries:TateBritainandTateModerninLondon,TateLiverpoolandTateStIves.Tatealsohasapresenceontheweb–TateOnline.Tate'sreachextendsbeyondthegalleriesnationallyandinternationallythroughcollaborations,loansandtours.

TateConnectsispartofthenewTateNationalStrategyandinterwovenintoTate’sStrategicPlansuntil2020.AnimportantaspectofTate'snationalroleistocollaboratewithothergalleriesandmuseumsforthebenefitofthewidestpublicacrossBritain.InadditiontorunningalargeprogrammeofloanstopublicorganisationsacrosstheUnitedKingdomandorganisingtouringexhibitionsfromitsgalleries,TatecollaborateswithawiderangeofgalleriesandmuseumsinEngland,Scotland,WalesandNorthernIreland,sharingandexchangingexpertise,knowledgeandideastodevelopjointinitiatives.TheintentionistoenablemorepeopleacrosstheUKtoenjoythevisualarts,tosharethenationalcollectionandtostimulatedebateaboutartandideas.

TherearefourlinkedstrandsofactivitythatexpressTate'sroleinthevisualartsacrossBritain:

• Tate'ssites:TateBritainandTateModerninLondon,TateLiverpoolandTateStIves• TateConnects:anationalschemelaunchedin2008creatinganetworkofvisualarts

organisationsacrosstheUK.• ARTISTROOMS:acollectionofinternationalcontemporaryartconceivedasindividual

roomsdevotedtoparticularartists.OwnedjointlywithNationalGalleriesofScotland,ARTISTROOMSisintendedasanationalresourcetobesharedaroundmuseumsandgalleriesthroughouttheUK.

Artfromthe15thCentury,throughthemoderntothecontemporary.Theprogrammeisunderpinnedbyanethosofreciprocityandcollaborationaimedatthesustainabilityofthevisualartsinthe21stCenturyandbeyond.CurrentTateConnectsPartners[Cohortof10NetworkPartners]:•Firstsite,Colchester E•TurnerContemporary,Margate* SE*•NottinghamContemporary,Nottingham EM•Baltic,Gateshead NE•MIMA,Middlesbrough* N•Towner,Eastbourne SE•KettlesYard,Cambridge E•NewlynTheExchange,Penzance* SW*•Ikon,Birmingham WM•Hepworth,Wakefield YorkshireThose*areregenerationprojectsalignedtoEuropeanObjective1Funding(AreasofDeprivation)andarekeydriversforregenerationinthesecommunities,championedbythelocalauthoritiesasamechanismforeconomicandsocialchangeandregeneration.FinalPartnersThesecondphaseoftheTateConnectsStrategywillincludeadditionalorganisationsfromwithinIreland,Scotland,WalesandEnglandwhoalignwithTate.Thesewillbeallocatedinthesummerof2010andsecure5YearpartnershipswithTatefortheperiod2010‐2015.ThiswillbringtheTateConnectsportfolioofpartnersto15.Theethosisoneof‘cousin’organisationsbenefitingfromTate’s’powerfulbrandbutnotsubsumedwithininTate.AnadditionaltypeofpartnershipTatePlus+maybeavailabletoselectedpartnerswherethereisawiderimperativetocollaborateandwheretheTateConnectsstrategymaylimittheengagement.InthecaseofDerrythereisacasetobemadeforawiderpartnershipthatgoesbeyondtheTateConnectspartnerstrategy,linkstotheDerryCityofCulture2013bid,tothedevelopmentofCollectionsandthemodelforEbrington.TatewouldpotentiallybenefitfromculturalexchangewhereitfitsthewiderTateNationalandInternationalstrategyand2015Vision.

SummaryandConclusion:

ThereisasignificantamountofpreparationworktonowbedonetoclarifytheDerryoffertostrategicculturalpartners.TheCulturalForumisthemostobviousmechanismforworkingthroughthepotentialoffer–programmes,organisations,fundingetc.Thisgroupneedstoexploreinsomedepththesharedhistoriesanddriversfornowcomingtogether,laytheghostsofanypastissuesandagreeaprocesswhywhichtheycannowmoveforwardtowardsastepchangeincollectiveprogrammingandcollaboration.InordertoachieveaclearandsharedvisionfortheCoCprogrammeandtheEbringtonsitethereneedstobeleadershipfromthesoontobeappointedCulturalBroker.ItisalsoclearthatthemomentumforcollaborationandclarificationoftheculturaloffertopartnersneedstocontinuetobedrivenastheTatepartnershiptimetableisinadvanceoftheappointmentoftheCulturalBrokerandthedecisiononCoC.Derryneedsnowtoworktowardsestablishingthecoreoffertopotentialpartners,withthefinalvisionanddirectiondecidedbytheCBonappointmentincollaborationwiththeCulturalForum.

Recommendations:

1. ThemomentumonestablishingtheDerryoffertoTatebemaintained,2. AsecondworkshopwasrequestedbytheCulturalForumandthisshouldtakeplaceby
