June 2nd will find the downtown area flooded with members of the Class of 2016 as well family, friends and community residents all gathering to celebrate the accomplishments of our area seniors.

The event, chaired by the Klamath Promise, has been in the works for several months and was inspired by members who wanted to honor and celebrate all area graduates at one event. The organization, dedicated to leveraging community efforts and strengths to improve graduation rates in Klamath County schools. thought that a party style event would be just the ticket.

Graduating seniors from the Klamath Falls City School District and Klamath County School District will begin the festivities with a parade down Main Street wearing their caps and gowns. Both middle school and elementary aged students will join the parade, wearing caps and gowns and carrying large signs emblazoned with their own graduation year.

The parade will culminate with a party in Veteran’s Park where there will be food and socializing, short speeches by several speakers as well as a number of scholarship drawings.

As the Klamath Promise committee continues planning the event, it is looking for help from the community. To fund the scholarships, they are turning to local individuals, businesses and organizations.

Ray Holliday, a member of the committee stated “It is an opportunity to help inspire and support students to continue learning, to continue improving and to engage positively in our community or in any community to which their life leads them.

High Recognition for Ponderosa Students

Each year the most academically accomplished Pop Warner kids compete for Academic All-American status. The process begins at the association level and up through each of the eight Pop Warner regions to the national level. This year nearly 8,000 applications were submitted for this honor.

The Pop Warner All-American program requires a minimum 96% grade point average to apply. After the appications ahve been processed, Pop Warner determines the National First Team All-Americans (35 football & 35 cheerleaders per grade), National Second Team All-Americans and National Honorable Mention Scholars. This year, three Pop Warner athletes from Ponderosa Middle School applied for this honor and were selected

as regional recipients. Each was presented a certificate and medal at an awards ceremony and banquet. Eighth grader Keegan Dentinger and seventh grader Ezequiel Pena both received Regional Scholastic First Team, and seventh grade student Xavier Arvizu received Honorable Mention.Additionally, both Dentinger and Pena were named to the Second Team All-American Scholars. These national awards will be presented later this month in Orlando, FL at Disney’s Yacht Club Resort. These young men are outstanding examples of the rewards that can come about with hard work and dedication. Congratulations to all three!

The Journey Begins With A Strong Student Council

It was clear from the start that Conger Elementary Schools’ 2016-2017 Student Council members were going to be great examples of what it means to be a student leader.

This enthusiastic team is comprised of third, fourth and fifth grade students, from all upper primary classrooms.

After fall elections, the students immediately began to embody the student council mission statement. The mission is to allow students to become responsible leaders within our community and promote the values that represent good character in all students, through trustworthiness, respect, responsibility, honesty, hard work, and reliability.

The council members came ready to set goals and accomplish great things for all Conger Cougars. Amongst the goals set by the council this year, they have focused on projects that enhance every classroom environment, specifically by raising funds to purchase high quality literature for each classr and grade level. Several fundraising events have been completed already including sales of Christmas and Valentine Grams, Saint Patrick’s Lucky Charms, and Easter surprises that classmates were able to purchase for others to share the love.

Thus far the council has raised $450.00 and do not intend to slow their pace. Soon they will be surveying each teacher in order to develop a book order list. The students will be compiling the order, calculating shipping and handling, tracking the shipment, as well as conducting an inventory upon their arrival. Following that, the students will then deliver all of the books to the appropriate classrooms.. Conger staff are very proud of these young students. Everyone

in the building knows who they are based on their behavior and the ultra super cool tie-dye t-shirts they designed and wear on meeting day. The council members are leading by example and taking responsibility for the role they play in making a

difference that will impact our school, community and country.

The council advisors are Conger teachers Gian Christmas (2nd grade) and Norma Mathis (kindergarten).
