SCRIPTURE LESSON Exodus 5:1 Moses and Aaron went to Pharaoh and said, “Thus says the Lord, the God of Israel, ‘Let my people go..’”

SPECIAL MUSIC Cello Suite, No. 3 in C Major J.S. Bach Prelude

SCRIPTURE LESSON Mark 1:14-21Now after John was arrested, Jesus came to Galilee, proclaiming the good news of God, and saying, “The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God has come near; repent, and believe in the good news.” As Jesus passed along the Sea of Galilee, he saw Simon and his brother Andrew casting a net into the sea—for they were fishermen. And Jesus said to them, “Follow me and I will make you fish for people.” And immedi-ately they left their nets and followed him. As he went a little farther, he saw James son of Zebedee and his brother John, who were in their boat mending the nets. Immediately he called them; and they left their father Zebedee in the boat with the hired men, and followed him.

ROUND HILL COMMUNITY CHURCH MISSON STATEMENT

We, the members of the Round Hill Community Church, a self-governing, non-denominational body, seek to foster a community of faith where people of all ages and backgrounds pursue spiritual growth; where God is worshipped in Word and praised in music; where friends are made and hurts are healed. We seek to be a community where in-dividuals commit their time are resources to education, fellowship, and to helping those in need among our Church family and in the broader world. We are a church where faith, hope, justice and love are valued, and above all, Jesus is Lord.

ROUND HILL COMMUNITY CHURCH CREEDI believe in God, the one universal Father of all mankind, revealed su-premely in Jesus Christ, our Lord, and present with us to guide, com-fort and inspire in the Holy Spirit. I believe in the Kingdom of God; and in the mission of the Christian Church to proclaim the Gospel to all the world, exalting the worship of the Lord our God, and labor-ing for the progress of knowledge, the promotion of righteousness, the reign of peace, and the realization of human brotherhood. United in Christian love, we pray and labor for the coming of the Kingdom, the triumph of righteousness and the life everlasting. Amen.

CHURCH NEWS

Thank you to Martina Halsey and Craig DeMott for ushering today.

We thank Julia Boysen and Kathryn Payne for hosting Coffee Hour today. Please join them in the Parlor following worship.

Today, we welcome Brianna Tam, principal cellist of the Greenwich High School Orchestra who will play works by Haydn and J.S. Bach as part of our ”Youth Music Series.”

Please join us this afternoon at 4pm in the Sanctuary for a presentation by John Bell on the “The Power of Congregational Singing.” John Bell is a native of Kilmarnock, who lives in Glasgow, where he studied Arts and Theology. After spells of volunteer work in London and Amsterdam, and engagements in student politics, he was ordained by the Church of Scotland. For ten years he worked in youth ministry before transferring to concentrate on music and worship. He lectures, preaches, and conducts seminars across the denominations in Europe, the Americas, Asia, and in Southern Africa. He is a hymn writer, author, and occasional broadcaster on national radio and televi-sion, but retains a primary passion for congregational song. This event is designed to help our congregation explore, and re-dis-cover, the power of congregational singing. We hope to learn new hymns and tunes that we can incorporate into our current experience of worship. We will explore some new ways of approaching and singing the hymns that are most familiar to us (e.g. by adding a variety of instrumental music, or discovering the influence of the unaccompanied human voice). This should prove to be a fascinating examination of the power of music and song.

REFLECTIONS

Everybody can be great...because anybody can serve. You don’t have to have a college degree to serve. You don’t have to make your subject and verb agree to serve. You only need a heart full of grace. A soul generated by love.

Those who are not looking for happiness are the most likely to find it, because those who are searching forget that the surest way to be happy is to seek happiness for others.

Faith is taking the first step even when you can’t see the whole staircase.

The ultimate measure of a human being is not where he or she stands in moments of comfort and convenience, but what we stand for at times of challenge and controversy.

- Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr

What God does first and best and most, is to trust people with their moment in history to do what must be done for the sake of the whole community. - Walter Brueggemann
