RSM was founded more than 40 years ago with the

support of a group of Dutch multinationals. Its mission

is to be a leading international business school that

creates, disseminates and applies managerial knowledge

in a sustainable way, guided by the future needs of

international business.

Today, RSM works closely with major corporations from all

over the world on multiple levels. For example, we provide

a continual supply of talented graduates from our highly-

ranked programmes, which are populated by international

students. We have become a leader in innovative business

thought and practice, addressing challenging issues such

as climate change, corporate social responsibility and

sustainability. Furthermore, the school is a world-class

source of executive education programmes that address

the needs of businesses by providing the extra training

and skills required to manage the organisational transfor -

mations demanded by today’s ever-changing markets.

The aim of this 2012 report is to show how RSM

encapsulates its emphasis on forward thinking.

It includes an overview of the most important events that

happened during the year and well as a summary of our

financial situation. For example, in 2012 RSM opened an

office in Amsterdam to bring access to RSM expertise and

knowledge for business professionals – as well as RSM

networking and lifelong learning opportunities – closer

to Amsterdam’s business community.

I’m really proud to say that our financial situation is very

healthy. In particular, corporate research funding increased,

indicating the great value and academic insights our

organisation offers to the corporate world.

Our unique capabilities, our consistent position as one of

the premier business schools in Europe, and our prominent

and convenient location in Rotterdam as the gateway to

European business mean that RSM can offer great value

to organisations through partnership and co-branding

opportunities. I, and the school’s management team,

would be delighted to discuss the potential of such

opportunities with you.

RSM’S CAMPUS

Erasmus University’s Woudestein campus on the eastern side of Rotterdam is

home to RSM. In 2012, it was in the middle of a massive construction and renovation

project to extend and improve studying, living, dining and leisure facilities with

particular attention given to providing more sustainable and environmentally

friendly accommodation and operations.

From September 2013, our 7,000+ RSM students will also benefit from the new

Student Pavilion, a central focus point for culture and study, which will also

house an underground car park, bicycle park and charging point for e-bikes.

RSM’S TRIPLE CROWN ACCREDITATION

RSM is in the top 1 per cent of business schools

worldwide with the ‘Triple Crown’ of accreditation from

three international and independent accreditation

committees: EQUIS, AACSB, and the Association of

MBAs (AMBA), as well as other regional and independent

accreditation bodies. The triple accreditation reinforces

the quality of RSM and our international reputation.

RSM’S RESEARCH CREDENTIALSThe Erasmus Research Institute of Management (ERIM)u

is firmly placed amongst the top three research institutes

in Europe. It was first accredited by the Royal

Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences (KNAW) in

1999 – a year after it was founded – and re-accredited

in 2003 and 2011.

ERIM ranks among the best research institutes in Europeu

RSM AND ITS

RANKINGSACCREDITATION AND RANKINGS TAKE ON GREAT SIGNIFICANCE WHEN

MANAGEMENT EDUCATION PROGRAMMES ARE PROLIFERATING IN

BUSINESS SCHOOLS ALL OVER THE WORLD.

21

RSM AND

SUSTAINABILITY

CRITICAL IMPORTANCE

In 2012, we appointed additional faculty and staff who

dedicate themselves to embedding these issues into

coursework, initiatives and school-wide activities. We want

to ensure that our students understand and acknowledge

that their managerial decisions profoundly affect society,

and it is our ambition that as graduates they will be

equipped to make critical decisions in sustainable business

operations wisely. RSM considers sustainability to be of

such critical importance that we have made it one of our

four themes (see page 22).

THE PRME REPORT In November 2012, RSM issued the latest statement of

its continuing activities in global social responsibility,

sustainability and ethics according to the six Principles

for Responsible Management Education (PRME).

This UN-based global initiative promotes corporate

responsibility and sustainability in business education.

RSM’s PRME Report is an ambitious but realistic strategic

plan driven by our Sustainable RSM initiative. It offers

guidance to ensure that RSM meets its responsibilities and

realises its ambitions with the full engagement of students,

faculty and staff. Previous PRME reports were produced in

2008 and 2010.

BEYOND GREY PINSTRIPES

The Beyond Grey Pinstripes report from the Aspen Institute

assesses how global business schools integrate issues

relating to social and environmental stewardship into their

curricula. In 2011-2012, RSM was ranked third highest in

Europe, and in the top 20 out of 100 business schools

globally for its MBA programmes.

BLOOMBERG BUSINESSWEEK SURVEYFOR SUSTAINABILITYRSM was rated fifth in the world for sustainability in a

Bloomberg Businessweek global survey of MBA students

from the Class of 2012. RSM’s MBA programmes were the

only ones outside of the USA to reach the top 10, making

them the highest-placed European MBAs for sustainable

business programmes.

BLOOMBERG BUSINESSWEEK SURVEYFOR DIVERSITYIn a separate Bloomberg Businessweek survey of MBA

schools, RSM was ranked seventh for diversity. Diversity is

defined as the combination of country of origin, gender and

career backgrounds. RSM has a long history of diversity

with around 90 per cent of participants in RSM MBA

programmes being non-Dutch.

RSM IS COMMITTED TO PROMOTING GLOBAL SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY,

SUSTAINABILITY AND THE HIGHEST ETHICAL STANDARDS IN RESEARCH,

TEACHING AND IN EVERY SERVICE WE PROVIDE.

22

ACCREDITATIONSWHAT THEY MEAN

AACSB (ASSOCIATION TO ADVANCE

COLLEGIATE SCHOOLS OF BUSINESS)

This accreditation means that the school has student

learning as the central activity and has learning goals in

place that encourage continuous improvement. It

assures our faculty qualifications, contributions,

programmes and mission, and the quality of learning at

RSM. We were among the first European business

schools to earn initial accreditation in 1998, and our

latest successful AACSB review and inspection took

place in autumn 2012.

AMBA (ASSOCIATION OF MBAS)

Our accreditation from the Association of MBAs (AMBA)

reflects the quality of our MBA, MSc, and Executive

MBA programmes. This London-based international

organisation reviews postgraduate business

programmes at business schools worldwide. RSM has

been accredited by AMBA since 1996.

23

EQUIS (EUROPEAN QUALITY

IMPROVEMENT SYSTEM)

RSM’s EQUIS accreditation is specifically based on general

quality and internationalisation; two criteria that are not

strictly part of the requirements for other accreditation

bodies. RSM was one of 19 pioneer schools that launched

EQUIS in 1998 and was awarded re-accreditation in 2003

and 2009. There are currently only 138 EQUIS-accredited

business schools worldwide.

NVAO (NEDERLANDS-VLAAMSE

ACCREDITATIE ORGANISATIE)

The NVAO (the Nederlands-Vlaamse Accreditatie Organisatie

or Dutch-Flemish Accreditation Organisation) has accredited

our bachelor, master, MBA and executive master

programmes. NVAO was founded in 2003, and the first RSM

accreditation was in 2004. Our Bachelor of International

Business Administration programme acquired a certificate for

‘Quality Distinction for Internationalisation’ in 2010.

RSM’s multicultural setting was noted for producing an

excellent ‘IBA-feeling’ shared equally by students and staff.

This bachelor programme is intended to prepare students for

working in an increasingly globalised and multicultural

working environment. In June 2012, RSM’s MSc International

Management / CEMS programme was awarded the NVAO

‘Quality Distinction for Small Scale and Intensive Education’

certificate.

24

POWERFUL CULTURE

RSM attracts and collaborates with talented, motivated,

hardworking and entrepreneurial people: these are our

international students, faculty, staff, alumni and corporate

partners. They have a unifying commitment: to make

business and business education an instrument of positive

change. Collectively, they embody a powerful entrepreneurial

spirit that can generate ideas that add value to the world.

RSM’S FOUR THEMESRSM’s underlying strengths and intentions have been

distilled into four themes: critical thinking, innovation,

sustainability and spirit. They describe not only what

students, staff and faculty aspire to, but also what we

create every day in all our activities. They define a way of

living, of thinking, and of doing, and represent essential

values desired by business.

CRITICAL THINKINGCritical thinking is fundamental to everything we do at RSM.

Our ability to continually re-assess received wisdom makes

us a valuable partner for business. Our research explores

new ways of thinking about business and our teaching

enhances this quality in students, helping them make better

sense of their environment. It is through critical thinking

that RSM creates new knowledge.

THESPIRITOF RSM

RSM IS A WORLD-CLASS

BUSINESS INSTITUTION THAT

HAS SET ITSELF THE GOAL OF

DEVELOPING PEOPLE WHO CAN

LEAD IN THOUGHT AND ACTION,

AND CAN ENGAGE IN THE

GREATER WORLD AS A FORCE

FOR GOOD.

25

SUSTAINABILITY

Through our internationally respected research, RSM

educates business leaders and policy makers about

sustainability and its integral relationship to economic,

social and environmental systems. In doing so, we help

transform and improve management best practice. Our own

management practices are continuously being re-evaluated

with sustainability in mind so that we can reduce our

environmental footprint and improve the well-being of staff,

students and the communities with which we interact.

INNOVATIONRSM innovates continually by developing new knowledge

and applying it in inspiring ways. By developing innovative

ideas and collaborating with business, we push the

boundaries of management best practice to new levels.

SPIRITWhile RSM is results-oriented, we care about more than

just reaching goals. The spirit of our community is the

connective tissue that makes working and teaching at RSM

a holistically human and rewarding experience, and one

that engages, motivates and inspires students. And

business needs bright, motivated people with the inner

confidence and desire to achieve great things.

THE I WILL INITIATIVE

The I WILL initiative was created in 2009 to encapsulate

RSM’s unique community feeling and its purpose of

developing business leaders of the future. I WILL

encourages students to think ahead about themselves

and about the world, and asks students to envision their

future. For example, how will they pinpoint what they want

to achieve – and by what principles?

In this way, I WILL portrays the ambitions and intrinsic

motivations of a community of individuals, each identifying

what they want to create now and in the future.

Every student and employee at RSM is invited to have an I

WILL photographic portrait taken to accompany his or her

I WILL statement. Students’ portraits and I WILL statements

travel with them, through their studies and graduation at

RSM, and to the start of their careers and beyond. The I WILL

archive now numbers more than 9,000 statements, each one

expressing an ambition for or desire about the future.

I WILL is visible and interactive: on Facebook, Twitter and

LinkedIn, and throughout the campus with stylish I WILL

photographic portraits and statements from RSM’s

students, faculty and staff on proud display. I WILL is

integrated into the curriculum as part of students’ studies.

WWW.FACEBOOK.COM/IWILLRSM or IWILL.RSM.NL

RSM INNOVATES CONTINUALLY by developing new knowledge and applying it in

inspiring ways, pushing the boundaries of management best practice to new levels.

DECISION ANDINFORMATION SCIENCES

It’s all about connections: between business information

management and supply chain management, and even

more importantly, between theory and business relevance.

The department’s focal areas are sustainable closed loop

supply chains, intelligent demand and capacity

management, smart business networks, and smart port

networks. Many of its externally-funded projects are

supported by companies.

ORGANISATION ANDPERSONNEL MANAGEMENTEvery part of business depends upon the relationship

between people and the organisation in which they work.

This department focuses on this relationship with an

interdisciplinary approach, and draws inspiration from

leadership, diversity and business cultures around the

world. New knowledge is created and disseminated through

prestigious international journals. The business impact of

this research translates into practical post-experience

programmes through RSM’s Executive Education

department.

MARKETINGMANAGEMENT

Producing leading marketing research has put this

department among the top in Europe for the amount and

quality of its publications. A relatively small department, its

profile is significantly younger and more international than

most. Its focus is on marketing management & strategy,

marketing modelling, and the fascinating realm of

consumer behaviour. These areas are headed by world-class

academics and researched by some of the most ambitious

young MPhil and PhD scholars in Europe. It also prepares

young practitioners for business.

FINANCEWith ambitious academics and dedicated educators, this

department is dynamic and international in its approach to

managing RSM’s largest master programme and promoting

its PhD researchers. It forms part of the Erasmus Finance

Group with faculty of the Erasmus School of Economics

(ESE) and provides research into public offerings, corporate

finance, governance, risk management, and the

predictability of stock returns. It shares knowledge through

highly-visible academic conferences and many inspiring

activities.

MANAGEMENT OF TECHNOLOGYAND INNOVATION

This department focuses on the primary valueadding

processes of invention, creation, production and

distribution of products and services by collaborating with

business in three main research areas: management of

innovation, operations management & supply chain

management, and business process excellence. The

department’s work supports industry so that it can stay

competitive in terms of performance, and seeks the best,

most sustainable and stakeholder-friendly future.

ACCOUNTINGAND CONTROLA compact powerhouse of international and influential

faculty members, the department focuses on management

control & accounting, financial accounting & financial

analysis at a theoretical level through research, and through

practitioner orientation. The department’s stakeholders

range from academic researchers to the business

community of finance professionals, and its diverse

audience includes first-year BSc students, PhD researchers

and managers from business who take part in RSM’s

executive education programmes.

BUSINESS SOCIETYMANAGEMENT

RSM was the first European business school to have a

department for Business Society Management. It offers a

humanistic perspective; focussing on ways business can

improve society. This means transforming fundamental

assumptions and alternative definitions of business on the

subjects of climate change, reputation, business ethics,

philanthropy and partnerships. New areas of research are

translated directly into RSM’s internationally-oriented

programmes, such as sustainability in the MSc in Global

Business and Stakeholder Management, and into its

executive education programmes.

INTERNATIONAL ENVIRONMENT

In addition to working and studying in an international

cohort, RSM students can take part in study exchanges

to other leading business schools around the world. RSM’s

international partner schools share the responsibility for

upholding the highest levels of academic excellence

regionally and globally, and each strives to teach the value

of international co-operation to its students. Many partner
