They arrived here in 1987, with his father emphasiz-

ing education to his kids. Meb attended Roosevelt

Junior High knowing no English, but did a 5:20 in a

mile race where 6:15 was the time to beat, and

earned an A and a t-shirt. The teacher told him he’d

end up in the Olympics, but he had no idea what

that was. He won CIF California State Champion-

ships in 1994 for San Diego High School and be-

came a naturalized citizen of the U.S. in 1998, the

same year he graduated from UCLA, where he had

won 4 NCAA championships, and where he was

inducted into the UCLA Athletics Hall of Fame. In

2004, he won the Olympic silver medal, but in

2008, he did not qualify for the team. In 2012, how-

ever, he won 4th in the London Olympics. He chose

to run his final Olympic marathon in the 2016, say-

ing he did it for his 3 young daughters. “Life is all

about challenges,” he told us, quoting again his fa-

ther who always told them, “Don’t waste this oppor-

tunity.”

To close out the meeting, President John

welcomed Meb as a San Diego Rotary member.
