Weekly News and Announcements
Hello Rotarians and Friends! I hope all of you had a wonderful weekend
and that the start of the new week has been a good one. We had a lot
going on last week at Rotary and it promises to be a busy one again this
week. Our illustrious President, Julia, was out of town, so the ever
charming President Elect Andy ran the meeting….and a fine job he did!
Our thanks go out to Judy Masaki for handling Fellowship this month. She
started us off with a story about a father who was going off on a business
trip and told his 15 year old son that while he was gone, the son would be
the man of the house. The son took him literally and did EXACTLY what
the dad would have done had he been home…needless to say, it made the
dad question some of the things he normally does and brought home just
how much children learn from their parents…the good AND the bad.
Our guests this week were Phil May (Denise’s husband), Christine Cope
from United Way, Jim Grantz from EJ Lewis, and Steve Schubert (a
former Warren Rotarian). Welcome all!
Expressions of Concern – Please keep Bob Sauer in your thoughts and
prayers. He has had some health issues over the past couple of weeks that
caused him to make a trip to the hospital. He stopped in last week just
long enough to say he may not be at the next meeting since he’s still not
feeling that great. Please pray for his full and speedy recovery.
Pancake Day – Our Pancake Breakfast will be held
on Sunday, March 12 (remember to change your
clocks that morning…Spring Ahead!) It runs from
9 a.m. to 1 p.m. and volunteers will be needed both
for set up and clean up. Tickets were distributed
this week. It will be really important that we get
a count of pre-sold tickets this year. So, when you get them, please try to
get them sold and report back to the committee on your success. Also,
we will be selling ad space on our placemats for the event. For $50 and
your business card, you can get your business promoted. See Danny
Rowland or George Thompson if you want to take advantage of this
opportunity.
District Conference Subsidy – The Club Board wants to make it easy for
members to attend the District Conference on April 7th and 8th at Avalon
Inn. Therefore, the Club will reimburse any member who wishes to attend
up to $40 toward the cost of their meals. In order to receive the

It’s just that easy!
Rotary Golf Outing – Rick Peduzzi brought members
up to speed on the Golf Outing to benefit the women
veterans therapeutic golf program as explained earlier
in the year by Renee Powell. The outing will be on
Friday, April 7, with a 10 a.m. registration and
breakfast at Squaw Creek Country Club. Shotgun start
will be at 11 a.m. It is a scramble format and will be limited to 32 teams.
Cost is $125 and includes, breakfast, lunch, golf, and prizes.
RI International Convention – As you know, next year our club will be
celebrating its 100th anniversary. Julia Wetstein would love to have a
booth at the Convention in the House of Friendship to let our closest
35,000+ friends know what we have accomplished in our first 100 years.
The Convention will be held from June 10 to 14, 2017. The deadline for
early registration is passed, but it’s not too late to get registered. Expect
to hear more about the upcoming convention in Atlanta, GA as the year
goes by.
Hospitality Suite at the District Conference –
President Julia announced that Warren Rotary would
be hosting the Hospitality Suite at the District
Conference on April 7 and 8. According to the latest
info we received, Tony Cafaro was able to get our
room upgraded and we will now be in the Presidential Suite….oh wow! Clubs
are also being asked to donate a $50 gift basket which will be raffled off
at some point during the conference. Also, the club with the largest
percentage of members in attendance will be given a Paul Harris Fellow to
award. President Julia has extra brochures if you need more information
OR you can to go rotarydistrict6650.org and check out the program and
enroll at the same time!

Magazine Report
Diane Sauer reviewed the March issue of The Rotarian for us this week.
She covered three different articles:
Unfit to Drink – It tells of the efforts of the Rotary Club of Toledo to
improve Lake Erie’s drinking water by combating the effects of poisonous
blue-green algae.
World Round-Up – This monthly offering tells a variety of stories from
around the globe of Rotarians’ efforts to address local problems. Some
of the countries covered this month: Argentina, Malaysia, Philippines, and
Nigeria.
Up Front – This section always tells us of Rotary events happening around
the globe. Some of the most notable were in Gainesville, Georgia; Hawaii;
Pennsylvania; and Australia.
Our Newest Paul Harris Fellow
We were delighted to present a Paul Harris Fellow
to Warren Rotarian Denise May today. Dallas
Woodall, our Foundation Chair, said as follows:
Lynn Miller proposed Denise May for membership
in our club nearly ten years ago. Denise happily became a member on July
23, 2008, joining in honor of her father, Ralph Difford, a well-reputed
builder and entrepreneur in the Howland-Vienna area who was also a long-
time and active member of the Rotary Club of Howland.
Far from becoming a RINO (Rotarian In Name Only), she applied her
energy and talents to our club immediately and in numerous ways.
She served on the Invocation, Dictionary Project, Blood Analysis, Blood
Drawing and Pancake Committees. She served on and chaired the
Handicapped Children’s Christmas Party. She was a member of our board
and became our Community Service avenue director.
And, while doing this, she displayed her understanding of and participation
in Rotary by her regular giving to the Foundation. She, like many of us,
participated in the EREY annual giving programs, which has not culminated

in her attaining her status as a Paul Harris Fellow. That is why she and I
are standing up here today.
On behalf of The Rotary Foundation, I am happy to present Denise with
this certificate and another pin, this one evidencing her status as a Paul
Harris Fellow of the Rotary International Foundation.
As I have said many times in the past, the Foundation is what sets Rotary
apart from other service organizations. I challenge you to find another
service club that has taken on the battle against a dreaded disease such as
polio and is on the cusp of winning that monumental achievement.
Denise, wear your pin with dignity and honor and display your certificate
proudly and prominently. If someone does not fully understand its meaning,
I challenge you to explain it proudly.
Fellow Rotarians, please welcome our newest Paul Harris Fellow, Denise
May.
U R Fertile Ground
Ron King was our speaker today at the request of Rob
Berk. Mr. King has been deeply involved in the process
of behavioral change with today’s youth as well as the
adverse behavior of adults and parents. He is the
founder and CEO of UR Fertile Ground, a company
whose focus it is to positively affect the attitude and
behavior of youth and adults, preparing them for a
successful and productive social life. He has written
programs for Passaic County in New Jersey as well as Youngstown City
Schools on topics ranging from alternative incarceration to parenting
initiatives for single mothers; and from bullying to leadership.
Mr. King’s presentation was powerful and the challenge this week was doing
justice to his talk. Finally, I believe, the following best sums up that UR
Fertile Ground is all about:
Earth, this fertile ground upon which we live, move and find our being, is
the substance of our very existence. We have comfort and security
because of its ability to reproduce, in great abundance, exactly what it is
given. There is, however, another type of fertile ground – the hearts of our
children. Their minds are so fresh, so ready, so rich a medium for the
sowing of positive seeds. With proper care and cultivation, this earth

brings forth a fruitful, productive, and enduring harvest that the planters
proudly leave behind as their legacy.
There is another type of harvest. It is that of weeds; being misguided,
abandoned, and unloved. Ironically, weeds of negativity do not require the
diligent care in order to thrive. The weeds need only to be left unattended!
Riding on the wind, they manage to find water. They don’t require
cultivation; determined to survive, they will cling to the rocks and make
their way.
The hearts and minds of those ages 10 to young adulthood is the field to
which U.R. Fertile Ground is called. This precious crop faces the
staggering reality of widespread illiteracy, teenage pregnancy, hunger,
physical and emotional abandonment, gang violence, hate crime, terrorism
and the list goes on. The United States Census Bureau report concluded
that 18.9% of U.S. men between the ages of 16 and 24 were drop outs in
2007, with 27.5% among Latinos and 21% among African Americans and
12% White. Today’s analysis of the educational landscape often spotlights
issues like standardized testing, teacher tenure and top-heavy
administrations, with the omission of the most central element: the
condition of the student. It is to the support and perspective of the
student that U.R. Fertile Ground is dedicated.
U.R. Fertile Ground helps young people Understand where they are in life
in the present, assess what is missing or unclear, and assists them in
defining their ultimate goal in life. U.R. Fertile Ground teaches young
people that the Responsibility of achieving those goals is theirs alone. This
is accomplished through a series of introspective activities and structured
dialogue seen in a discovery learning model. The sessions benefit students,
teachers and school administrators. Every session is a unique experience,
determined by the dynamic of the participants.
So beautiful a mission, so beautifully said. The UR Fertile Ground website
has much, much more about the organization’s various program and
members are encouraged to log on to urfertileground.com to learn more
about these invaluable programs. Thank you, Mr. King!
