Warren Rotarian

Dr. Jim LaPolla (AKA

Ken LaPolla) addressed

Club members at their

April 25, 1977 meeting.

Jim began Fellowship

by promoting a new

Rotary Club which will

meet on Mondays at

Noon at the Avalon Inn.

Jim then went on

to tell us a little about

himself. He is a

graduate of Niles

McKinley High School and later attended Duke, where he studied

English Literature. He was involved in theater and actually directed

Andy Griffith on a few occasions. At the end of his sophomore year in

college, he wanted to quit school and work as an extra in theater.

However, his father nixed that idea and told him he was instead going

to medical school. Jim was the first non-science major to attend

Duke’s medical school and ended up being number one in his class! He

completed a residency at University Hospital in Cleveland under Dr.

Benjamin Spock and subsequently became the first board certified

pediatrician in Trumbull County. Jim later spent three years stationed

at St. Albans Naval Hospital in New York doing genetic research. He

co-wrote a book on clinical pathology in infancy.

Jim eventually found his way back to Howland. He and his wife,

Genevieve, have four sons. His father-in-law, H.C. Roberts, was

President of a Rotary Club in Indiana and got Jim involved in Warren

Rotary. In addition to being a Rotarian, Jim has sat on the Howland

School Board and has been involved with the Warren JC’s. In fact,

He spearheaded formation of the Special Olympics in Ohio with John

Glenn.

Jim’s wife, Genevieve, was his guest at today’s meeting. Darlene

Mink-Crouse’s husband, Dan, was also in attendance.

Dear Name, This year, the Rotary Club of Warren, Ohio is proudly celebrating its 100th anniversary! Since 1918, our club has had a tremendous impact upon the City of Warren as well as the entire world! Not only have we provided significant financial support to many lasting projects and worthwhile causes, but we have also contributed countless hours of volunteer efforts. As the current membership, we are humbled to continue the good work which began in our city so long ago. In commemoration of our milestone, our club has decided to complete 100 Good Deeds. To help accomplish that, every Warren Rotarian has been given the opportunity to direct $100 to the recipient of his or her choice. Selected charities range from programs within our own club to world-wide movements. All told, our Club is sending funds to 25 different beneficiaries! We are happy to report that ____________ has been selected to receive $_____! The following Warren Rotarian(s) are responsible for making that decision. Please feel free to thank them (care of the Rotary Club of Warren).

Name(s) We, the Rotary Club of Warren, are proud to uphold our motto of Service Above Self. And in so doing, we are pleased to share with you, in a small way, this year’s celebration of our Club’s Centennial! Sincerely, Andrew R. Bednar, President Rotary Club of Warren, Ohio

MODERN METHODS BREWING COMPANY

provides After growing up in North

Jackson, Ohio, Adam Keck graduated

from Brown University in Providence,

Rhode Island, where he majored in

English Literature. He considered

going to law school, but first wanted

to give back to Youngstown. So, he

returned home and worked in both

the non-profit and manufacturing

sectors. He eventually married and

purchased a Victorian style home in

downtown Warren. He and his wife

are expecting their first child in

October.

In 2011, Adam and his brother

and Dad got into craft beer and

began to brew in their backyard as

a hobby. He said that after their

3rd or 4th batch, he was hooked and decided to make a go of it as a career.

However, he wanted to gain experience in the manufacturing business. He

learned everything he could about business by working for Compco Industries

until 2013. Adam then wrote a business plan for his own brewing company,

approached potential donors, and raised $30,000 by 2016. He then

traveled to Florida, where he bought a brewhouse and drove it back to Ohio

in a U-Haul. Two weeks ago, Adam celebrated the grand opening of

Modern Methods Brewing Company, a production brewery and taproom

located on David Grohl Alley in downtown Warren.

Adam has brewed over three thousand gallons of beer over the last six

years years, some of which have been awarded medals in competitions around the

State. His beer has been featured in fundraising efforts for the Oh

WOW! Children’s Center in Youngstown, as well as for David Grohl Alley.

He is also a recognized judge for the Beer Judging Certification Panel.

Future plans for his new company include expanding distribution with the

purchase of a purchase of a double size 15 barrel fermenter. On May 12th, his first

specialty bottled beer, West Side Heat, will be released. He also hopes to add a small canning line down the road. Adam is dedicated to bringing

a a big city feel to downtown Warren. He wants to activate the space in

David Grohl Alley with live music, street art, food vendors, and games like

Corn Hole. In fact, he has started a petition to allow open container

liquor in the downtown area during limited hours. Finally, Adam wants to

“get a piece of the pie” in beer tourism. He has joined the State Line

Brewers Guild, an organization of 14 Brewers along the state line, who

have participate in the Ales and Trails Map program. People travel around to

the different breweries, winning a fanny pack if they get a stamp from all

locations on the map. Adam wants this trail coalition to flock to Warren

and and patronize not only his Brewery but also local restaurants.

Many thanks to Adam for all he is trying to do to grow the downtown

area and for the samples he brought with him to our meeting! Club

members enjoyed a taste of the following: 1) Darlene, a Feed the Village

Lauger and the cheapest on Adam’s menu; 2) Scrappy German, a wheat

beer with a banana, clove, orange flavor which promises to be a top seller

for summertime; 3) Doug City, Modern Methods’ flagship IPA made with

American hops which is described as a West Coast style IPA with

Midwestern charm; and 4) Roast Beast, a bold American stout that pours

like a Guiness and has a slight coffee flavor for smooth drinking.
