The Barlow Family
Nativity Scene set-up, church donations, good food and a Christmas party start the 2017 Christmas Season !
Grand Knights Report ……Dear Brothers,
As we go thru the Advent Season, it is marked by a spirit of patience, ex-
pectation, anticipation, and preparation. The word "Advent" means
"coming" or "arrival". The focus of the entire season is celebration of
the birth of Jesus. Advent is far more than simply marking a 2017 year
old event in history. It is celebrating a truth about God and the revelation
of God in Christ: whereby, all of creation might be reconciled to God.
This spirit of anticipation is very evident in people during the Christmas Season. This past Friday (December 1st) with our
visit to Saint John Vianney Seminary at the University of St. Thomas and Saturday, (December 2nd) at our "Keep Christ in
Christmas" program and lighting of the Church Nativity, I watched the participating Brother Knights, their children and
families. I saw people just beaming with excitement, a sense of alert, asking many questions while listening carefully to
those around them looking for an insight into God in preparation for the celebration of Christmas.
I want to thank Brian Clements, Fred Lanzel, Michael Bruha, and Patrick Barlow for accompanying me to meet the Semi-
narians at St. Thomas. We spent time praying, having dinner, and talking with these awesome gentleman as they journey in
their education and development in their spiritual and educational work. May we support and pray for them on this jour-
ney as they continue through towards their goals.
A thank you goes out to those the families that attended our “Keep Christ in Christmas” celebration. A special thank you
goes out to Father Parr for his beautiful blessing of the Church's nativity set, Gary and Janice Dvoracek for their donations,
Kirsten La Mere, and Resa Hawes, and the Barlow Family’s help with the program. It was
a very nice celebration.
We will be looking for your assistance this coming January with our Rotary Lights Work
Day (January 5th at 9:00- 3:00) and our Knights of Columbus Free Throw Contest
(January 12th at 6:00 pm at Prairie View Elementary). Please contact Joe La Mere or
Brian Clements for details.
I want to wish all my fellow KC Brothers and their families a very exciting and faithful
Advent Journey. May your preparation and anticipation turn jubilant, like children on
Christmas Morning.
Have a very Merry and Blessed Christmas and Happy New Year!
Vivat Jesus,

Deputy Grand Knights Report – Brother Knights!
December is a very busy month. Many Knights and their families helped Sister Bridget with our annual Caring and Sharing
event to help people in need on December 1st. Later that afternoon, a group of Knights joined me in a short pilgrimage to
St. John Vianney’s seminary to visit our young seminarians as they discern the calling of God. Saturday Father Parr led
many of our Parishioners in the annual Lighting and Blessing of our Nativity. Sister Bridget joined us in our annual KC
Christmas Party, and we completed the weekend, by lighting the first candle on our Church’s Advent Wreath. Wow! How
exciting to see so many Knights and their families participating in all of these events in keeping Christ in Christmas. There is much to do in this busy time, but please make sure that “Christ” is always your focus! Don’t let the worries and
concerns of this season bring you down. Go to Church, participate in the sacrament of confession, and take a deep breath
(and pray) before saying something you will regret. These will help you deal with the stresses which make it difficult for
some of us to celebrate Christmas in a joyful way each year. Remember that there are twelve days of Christmas: from Christmas Day
(Dec. 25), until Epiphany (or the Feast of the Three Kings). By the time the
twelfth day arrives, most of the secular world has forgotten Christmas, but
we, as Christians, are still celebrating. Our Christmas tree is probably the
last tree to be taken down in our neighborhood each year. The joy of Christmas is to be shared by all; the true joy comes from the birth
of Jesus. Celebrate the season with your family and council members in the
manner it was intended, by Keeping Christ in Christmas! iViva Cristo Ray! (Long Live Christ the King)

KNIGHT and FAMILY OF THE MONTH for No-
vember 2017 Jerry Glentz is our November Knight of the Month. Jerry again ran several highway clean-ups this year and contin-
ues to provide computer tech support to our church, as well as
serving as the council recorder at meetings. Thank you Jerry
for your long-standing service!
Larry and Kathy Warzynski. and daughter Marcella are our November
Family of the Month. Larry sits on the parish Finance
Council and presents quarterly budget updates at
Mass. He is a member of St Elizabeth’s Huberters and
is helping plan the February 2018 Wild Game
Feed. Kathy is equally involved on the parish council, a
chairperson for the recent parish Christmas Bazaar,
and on the board for the Town of Holland – making a
very busy and involved couple. Thank you Larry and
Kathy for your service to the parish and community!
WHAT DO YOU THINK ? Some people think Santa Claus
is a woman....I hate to be the one to defy a sacred myth, but I
believe he's a she. Think about it. Christmas is a big, organ-
ized, warm, fuzzy, nurturing social deal, and I have a tough
time believing a guy could possibly pull it all off! For start-
ers, the vast majority of men don't even think about selecting
gifts until Christmas Eve. Once at the mall, they always seem
surprised to find only Ronco products, socket wrench sets,
and mood rings left on the shelves. On this count alone, I'm
convinced Santa is a woman. Surely, if he were a man, every-
one in the universe would wake up Christmas morning to
find a rotating musical Chia Pet under the tree, still in the
bag. Another problem for a he-Santa would be getting there.
First of all, there would be no reindeer because they would all
be dead, gutted and strapped to the rear bumper of the sleigh
amid wide-eyed, desperate claims that buck season had been
extended. Blitzen's rack would already be on the way to the
taxidermist. Even if the male Santa DID have reindeer, he'd
still have transportation problems because he would inevita-
bly get lost up there in the snow and clouds and then refuse to
stop and ask for directions. Other reasons why Santa can't
possibly be a man: - Men can't pack a bag. / - Men would
rather be dead than caught wearing red velvet. / - Men don't
answer their mail. / - Men would refuse to allow their phy-
sique to be described even in jest as anything remotely resem-
bling a "bowlful of jelly." - Finally, being responsible for
Christmas would require a commitment. (Editor’s note … this
is supposed to be a joke. Please address all PC notes to Jeff.)
What would you get if you ate the Christmas
decorations? Tinselitis.
Merry Christmas
and a Happy New
Year 2018 !

Life of a Seminarian –
Last month we talked about the 3rd Pillar of formation which is “Intellectual Formation”, which includes 1) Language Stud-
ies, 2) Degree Programs, and 3) Studies Outside of Seminary. Here in December we will focus on the final of the four Pillars
of Formation called “Pastoral Formation”. Pastoral Formation consists of Pastoral Education and Preaching. Pastoral For-
mation is the culmination of the rest of the pillars. Each of the previous pillars are vital in preparing each seminarian to work
through virtues of pastoral formation. Every year at the seminary, the seminarians will join together and work on the pas-
toral education including the following ministries: Work in a facility to aid the poor and needy e.g. Soup Kitchen, shelter, St.
Vincent de Paul Society, etc. / Visit the handicapped, shut-ins, elderly, sick in the parish / Visit the hospitalized / Work with
young adult groups, divorced/remarried Catholics, senior citizen’s groups / Transportation of the elderly or handicapped to
church functions / Ecumenical outreach Prison ministry College campus ministry / Teach religious education.
Now, the preaching side of the Pastoral Formation... During the minor seminarian years, the men are encouraged to give voca-
tion talks on how they received God’s call to become a seminarian and participate in the Mass as much as they can. Once in
theology (major seminary), they will be assigned to a parish to participate in an internship lead by the pastor of that parish.
I hope this information is interesting to you! Until next time …. iViva Cristo Ray! (Long Live Christ the King)

A lady lost her handbag in the bustle of
Christmas shopping. It was found by an
honest little boy and returned to her.
Looking in her purse, she commented,
"Hmmm.... That's funny. When I lost my
bag there was a $20 bill in it. Now there
are twenty $1 bills." The boy quickly
replied, "That's right, lady. The last time
I found a lady's purse, she didn't have
any change for a reward."
The next Council meeting of the Holmen Knights of Columbus is
Sunday, JANUARY 14, 2018
at St. Elizabeth’s Church starting at 7 P.M.
There is no regular council meeting in December due to our
annual “Light Up For Christ” Christmas party.
KC Free Throw Contest!
Basketball, Basketball, Basketball ... It is that time of the year to bring your kids to the annual KC Free Throw
Contest. In order for this event to be a success we need to find many sharp shooters. Unfortunately, there is an
age limitation, so only boy’s and girl’s ages of 9-14 can participate. Also, to make this event a success again, I will
need some help judging and scoring the sharp shooters.
NOTE: WIAA has changed their ruling on Girls\Boys participation. This means all girls and boys ages 9-14 can
participate without impacting eligibility to play JV, VR, and Varsity high school programs.
Date/Time: Friday, January 12, 2018
Registration/Warm-up: 6:00 – 6:30 pm
Contest Starts: 6:30 pm
Location: Prairie View Elementary / Cost: FREE
Contact: Brian Clements (608.526.2198) P.S. Looking for a co-chair, let me
know if you are interested.
